1.0 General Information
1.1 Introduction
This manual contains information for the installation and operation of the
Audio International, Inc. (AI) 100 Watt, Stereo Amplifier, Model No. AI-
ST100X. Information contained within this publication includes relative
physical, mechanical, and electrical characteristics. Also included within
this publication are additional references needed for installation and
operation of the unit.
1.2 Purpose of the Equipment
The AI-ST100X is an audio component that can be utilized to form
standard, basic building blocks that can be arranged in almost any
configuration for any size aircraft. The audio components are built to
rugged aircraft standards and are easily incorporated into new or existing
cabin audio systems. They feature compact size, solid state circuitry,
lightweight aluminum housings, and an attractive, durable anodized finish.
The AI-ST100X is a professional stereo power amplifier that delivers high
performance, excellent frequency response, and clear sound quality. A
“soft” turn ON/OFF is incorporated into the unit to eliminate unwanted
ON/OFF noise.
1.3 Operational Features
Features of the AI-ST100X include a left and right gain potentiometer for
proper adjustments. This amplifier takes low level audio signals and
amplifies the signal to properly drive loudspeaker systems allowing an
entertainment system to sound its best in any aircraft interior.
1.4 Optional Equipment

2.0 Installation
2.1 Prior to Installation
The AI-ST100X is a simple module to use and install. All audio input
cables should be 24 AWG minimum twisted shielded pair and output
cables should be 20 AWG minimum (16 – 18 AWG recommended) twisted
shielded pair. The module must be attached to conform to the standards
designated by the customer, installing agency, and existing conditions as
to the unit location and type of installation. The following should be
carefully considered before installing:
2.1.1 Select a mounting location for the AI-ST100X. For best results, the
unit must be located as close to source equipment as possible.
Long low-level runs may introduce noise into the audio signal.
Allow a minimum of ½inch air space around the amplifier due to
the amount of heat generated by the unit. Refer to Section 5.0
Specifications and Drawings, for detailed mounting instructions.
2.1.2 Select a mounting location where 28 VDC power and audio signal
has been previously installed.
2.1.3 Locate the unit to allow ease in adjustments. Master gain controls
are located on the back of the unit and must be accessible for
system adjustments and periodic maintenance.
2.1.4 Initial audio adjustments should begin with the gain adjustments a
mid-level and adjusted as low as possible to obtain acceptable
output levels without distortion.
2.1.5 The purpose of the audio amplifier is to compensate for low level
audio signals and “amplify”them to a high level. The amplifier
adjustments will be most effective when the interior is thoroughly
furnished and all pieces of furniture are in place. A spectrum
analyzer is the best tool to use in determining the proper amplifier
settings. If a spectrum analyzer is not available, simply determine
the settings by audio preference.
2.2 Unpacking and Inspection
2.2.1 Carefully open the packaging and remove the unit. Verify that all
components have been included in the package per the packing
list. Inspect the unit for damage. Retain the packing materials and
packing list.

If damage has occurred during shipping, a claim must be filed with
AI within 24 hours and a “Return Request Authorization Number”
must be obtained from AI. Refer to the front cover of this manual
for address and telephone number of Audio International.
Repackage the unit in its original packaging materials and return it
to AI following instructions given by the AI representative. If no
return is necessary, retain the packing materials for storage or
reshipment if necessary.
2.3 Cautions & Warnings
2.3.1 All audio connections to the AI-ST100X should be shielded and
grounded. Perform a pin-to-pin check to confirm that all wires
terminate in their proper location. It is important to do a power and
ground check on the pin connections. Ensure that power and
ground are applied only where required.
2.3.2 DO NOT connect or disconnect the AI-ST100X while power is
applied.
2.3.2 DO NOT remove any factory-installed screws. Damage to the unit
may result and void any warranties.
2.4 Wiring Requirements
2.4.1 The installing agency must supply and fabricate all external cables.
The length and routing of external cables must be carefully studied
and planned before attempting installation of the equipment. Allow
adequate space for installation of cable and connectors. Avoid
sharp bends and placing cables near aircraft control cables.
Maintain a minimum clearance of three (3) inches from any control
cable. If wiring is run parallel to combustible fluid or oxygen lines,
maintain a separation of six (6) inches between the lines.
2.4.2 All power and ground wires must be 18 AWG minimum. All audio
lines require twisted, shielded cable with the cable shields
grounded at the source. Power ground wires must be grounded
within twelve (12) inches of the unit. All wires must be in
accordance with MIL-W-22759 or equivalent. Twisted, shielded
cable must be in accordance with MIL-W-27500 or equivalent.
Protect power wires with circuit breakers or fuses located close to
the electrical power source bus.

2.5 Physical Requirements
2.5.1 Refer to Section 5.0 for unit dimensions and attachment points.
2.5.2 The AI-ST100X must be located in a position that is easily
accessible as adjustments are located at the back of the unit.
Therefore, allow enough clearance for gain adjustments.
2.6 Electrical Requirements
2.6.1 Power requirements are five (5) amps maximum at 28VDC at
continuous power output (50 watts per channel –2 channel)
2.6.2 The following shows a simplified internal block diagram for the AI-
ST100X.

2.6.3 The auxiliary power supply converts incoming 28 VDC to 12 VDC.
The fuses at the back of the unit are provided for this auxiliary
power supply. These fuses provide over-current protection against
unit failure.

2.9 Post Installation Test
2.9.1 Load the audio source with selected material. With the aircraft and
audio power “ON”, apply power to the AI-ST100X amplifier.
2.9.2 Verify that the selected material may be heard.
2.9.3 Adjust gain controls is necessary. To increase amplification, rotate
gain controls in a clockwise direction; to decrease amplification,
rotate gain controls in a counter-clockwise direction (Left and right
audio controls).
3.0 Operations
To operate the AI-ST100X, load the audio source with selected material. Adjust
the gain controls to desired options.
