Chapter 1: What procedure you should use
Complete one of the following scenarios to install and configure the IG550 Integrated Gateway.
This installation includes a Juniper J4350 or J6350 Services Router, the TGM550 Media
Gateway, and an Avaya Media Server.

Note: In most cases, you administer Communication Manager on the media server
before you install the TGM550 and Juniper Services Router. However, you can

Chapter 2: Installing an IG550 Integrated Gateway
using the Disk on Key
Note:
Note: To add the TGM550 to a Juniper Services Router that is already operating, see
Chapter 5: Installing an IG550 Integrated Gateway with an existing Juniper
J4350/J6350 Services Router on page 97.
In this scenario, the customer adds a new site to the LAN, the WAN, or both, and to the
communication system. You must install both a Juniper Services Router and a TGM550.
This procedure assumes that you have a Disk-on-Key USB memory stick that stores a
configuration file. If you do not use the Disk-on-Key, you can use the J-Web Quick
Configuration interface for the initial basic configuration. See Chapter 3: Installing an IG550
Integrated Gateway with the J-Web Quick Configuration interface on page 37.
Creating a Disk-on-Key
You or a software engineer may need to create the Disk-on-Key. The Disk-on-Key stores a
configuration file that you generate with an Electronic Preinstallation Worksheet (EPW) for
Provisioning and Installation Manager. The EPW is available at http://support.avaya.com.
Select FIND DOCUMENTATION and TECHNICAL INFORMATION by PRODUCT NAME. then
select IG550 Integrated Gateway, and finally select release 4.0. Lastly, select View All
Documents. Find the EPW in the listed documents.
After you fill out the EPW with customer-specific data, save the configuration file as
juniper-config.txt and save the file to the Disk-on-Key.
Checking Juniper firmware compatibility
The software for the J-series router must be release 8.2 or higher. If it is not, upgrade the router
software to release 8.2 before continuing with the installation. See the Juniper J4350 and J6350
Services Router Getting Started Guide, Release 8.2.
!CAUTION:
CAUTION: Neither the TIMs nor the TGM550 should be inserted into the J-series router
before you are sure the router is running release 8.2 or higher. Failure to comply
with this caution may cause your system to become inoperable.

Also, check what Juniper software is compatible with the specific TGM550 firmware load you
are downloading. You might need to install newer router firmware before you install new
TGM550 firmware.
1. Go to http://support.avaya.com, and select Communication Manager from the most
popular documents list or by searching by product name.
2. Search All Documents for Communication Manager Software & Firmware Compatibility
Matrix.
Downloading the most recent firmware for the TGM550
Note:
Note: The sequence of links on the Web site might be different than the sequence in
this procedure. If you are a customer administrator or an Avaya Business
Partner, you might be required to access the Download Center Web site to
download firmware.
1. Go to http://www.avaya.com/support.
2. Navigate to Downloads.
The system displays a list of download categories.
3. Select Latest TN Circuit Pack, Media Server, and Media Gateway Firmware and
Software Updates.
4. Locate the file name or file names that match the files listed in your planning
documentation.
Note:
Note: The firmware version of a file must match the hardware vintage or the release of
Communication Manager, or both, and/or the software of the Juniper Services
Router. See the Communication Manager Software/Firmware Compatibility
Matrix under Downloads on support.avaya.com.
5. Double-click each file name you want.
The system displays a File Download window.
6. Click Save this file to disk.
7. Save the file on your laptop computer.
8. Use WinZip or another zip file tool to unzip the file, if necessary.

Copying the firmware file to a TFTP server or an FTP server
1. To load the firmware on a TGM550, place the firmware file on a TFTP or FTP server that is
connected to the customer’s LAN.
A TFTP server can be a customer computer. A TFTP server can also be an S8300 Media
Server on the LAN or WAN of the customer on which the firmware has been uploaded to the
/tftpboot directory.
Note:
Note: Use a Linux-based or a Unix-based TFTP server only if the customer already has
an existing one. In these cases, download the file to your laptop computer and
give the file to the customer for proper placement and execution. If the customer
does not have a TFTP server or an FTP server you can use, download a TFTP
server to your laptop to use with the firmware upgrades.
Reviewing safety requirements
1. See General Safety Guidelines and Warnings on page 148.
Verifying equipment
1. Verify that you have the following on site:
●Electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap (not provided)
●For rack or wall installation, flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers appropriate for the
screws or anchors (not provided)
●For the Communication Manager server, a license enabled for media gateway
announcements
●A Juniper-approved Disk-on-Key (USB memory stick) that contains the JUNOS
configuration file.

Reviewing airflow
1. Ensure the airflow around the chassis is unrestricted. Allow at least 6 in. (15.2 cm) of
clearance between the front and back of the Juniper Services Router chassis and adjacent
equipment. Ensure that there is adequate circulation in the installation location.
Unpacking equipment
1. Locate the packing list and the project manager’s list of equipment.
2. Remove all equipment from the boxes. Much of the equipment is boxed individually.
●The J-series router
●A 10-AWG grounding cable, an AC power cable or 14-AWG DC power cable, and cables
for the TGM550, Telephony Interface Modules (TIMs), and Physical Interface Modules
(PIMs)
!CAUTION:
CAUTION: You cannot use a 14 AWG grounding cable with the router. The grounding cable
must be 10 AWG.
●An Avaya-approved USB modem
●Two different sets of console cables and adapters:
- An RJ-45 flat rollover cable and a DB-9 adapter for console connections to the
TGM550.
- An ordinary round RJ-45 Ethernet cable and a DB-9 adapter for console connections
to the Juniper router.
!CAUTION:
CAUTION: The two DB-9 adapters look the same, but they are not. Do not use the router
adapter nor the Ethernet cable to connect to the TGM550. Additionally, do not
use the TGM550 adapter nor its rollover cable to connect to the router. If you use
the wrong cable or adapter, you may damage the console port. As a result, it is
strongly recommended that you use a permanent marker to label the cables and
adapters as soon as you remove them from the packaging.

Note: The TIMs and Physical Interface Modules PIMs should already be installed in the
router chassis. If you have modules that are not already inserted, insert the
modules as shown in Inserting the TGM550, the TIMs, and the PIMs in the router,
if necessary on page 43.
3. Label the DB-9 adapter and the flat rollover cable for the TGM550 to say “TGM550”. Label
the DB-9 adapter and Ethernet cable for the router console to say “router.”
4. Verify that the equipment matches the packing list.
5. Verify that the equipment matches the list of equipment from the project manager.
Installing the router in the rack
1. If the customer has a four-post rack and is using a shelf, install the shelf according to
manufacturer guidelines. Set the router on the shelf.
2. If the customer is using the brackets supplied with the router, do the following:
a. Partially screw customer-provided bolts or screws in to a 19-inch (48 centimeters) rack.
Note:
Note: These bolts or screws are for the resting holes.
b. Temporarily slide the resting holes of the brackets over the resting bolts or screws.
Ensure that a mounting screw position exists for the two top holes and two bottom holes.
c. Install the mounting brackets onto the chassis, as needed. Avaya recommends that you
use the center-mount chassis holes in the center of the chassis sides to mount the
brackets.

d. Lift the chassis, with its mounting brackets attached, into position on the rack. Use the
resting hole to temporarily hold the chassis.
3. Place the top screws and bottom screws in the mounting bracket into the rack. Tighten all
screws.
4. Remove the bolts or screws in the resting holes.

Inserting the TGM550, the TIMs, and the PIMs in the router, if
necessary
!CAUTION:
CAUTION: Neither the TIMs nor the TGM550 should be inserted into the J-series router
before you are sure the router is running release 8.2 or higher. Failure to comply
with this caution may cause your system to become inoperable.
The TGM550, the TIMs, and the PIMs should already reside in the router chassis. However, if
these items are shipped separately from the router, insert them into the router now with the
following steps.
1. Determine the slots in which to insert the TGM550 and TIMs. The slots must match the
configuration loaded on the Disk-on-Key. However, if not already configured, the TGM550
and TIMs can reside in any of the six slots. None of the slots is restricted from housing the
TGM550 or any particular model of TIM.
!CAUTION:
CAUTION: If the Communication Manager media server is already administered for the slots,
the slots in which you insert the equipment must also match exactly how the slots
are administered on the Media Gateway screen in Communication Manager.
!CAUTION:
CAUTION: The router must be turned off before inserting or removing the Avaya TGM550
and TIM modules. These modules are not hot-swappable. If you attempt to
remove or insert these modules while the router is turned on, the router might
reset or malfunction in some other way.
2. Ensure power is turned off.
3. Attach the blue filter inlet cover (see Figure 9: Sample illustration of Juniper Service Router
and TGM550, front view (J4350 shown) on page 25).
4. Insert the TGM550 and each TIM into the correct slot.
5. Align the notches in the connector at the rear of the TGM550, TIM, or PIM with the notches
in the slot in the router. Then slide the module in until it lodges firmly in the router.
!CAUTION:
CAUTION: Carefully slide the module straight into the slot to avoid damaging the connector
components.
6. Drive the screws to hold the module in place.

Cabling the components
!CAUTION:
CAUTION: The J-series router must be turned off before inserting or removing the Avaya
TGM550 and TIM modules. These modules are not hot-swappable. If you
attempt to remove or insert these modules while the router is turned on, the
router might reset or malfunction in some other way.
1. Have ready a length of the type of cable the the interface uses, as specified in Appendix
C: Network cable specifications and pinouts on page 145. Possible connections are:
●TGM550 — Appropriate CAT5 harness cables with RJ11 connectors for one to two
analog trunk connections, one or two analog line connections, or both
●TIM510 — An H600-383 Group 2 T1 cable with an RJ48C connector for T1/E1 trunk
connections
●TIM514 — An RJ11 cable for one to four analog trunk connections, one to four analog
line connections, or both

●TIM521 — A CAT5 cable with an RJ45 connector for one to four BRI trunk connections.
For each trunk connection, insert the CAT5 cable into an NT1 device. Then, connect the
NT1 device to the 2-wire central office connection.
●Juniper PIMs — see Juniper J4350 and J6350 Services Router Getting Started Guide,
Release 8.2.
2. Insert the cable connector into the port on the interface faceplate.
3. Arrange the cable so that the cable does not become loose or develop stress points.
4. Secure the cable so that the cable does not support its own weight as the cable hangs to
the floor.
5. Place excess cable out of the way in a neatly coiled loop.
6. Place fasteners on the loop to help maintain the shape.
7. Connect the other ends of the cables to the wall field, punch down block, or other devices
as appropriate for trunk and line access.

Connecting the grounding cable
Note:
Note: The grounding cable must meet the following specifications:
- Be 10 AWG
- Able to handle up to 8 Amps amperage
- Have a ring-type, vinyl-insulated TV14-6R lug or equivalent to accommodate the 10
AWG cable.
1. Connect the grounding cable to an earth ground
2. Attach the lug on the cable to the chassis grounding point, with the screw (see Figure 4 or
Figure 5).
