ABOUT ARGENTBRANCH
Thank you for purchasing one of the new innovative ArgentBranch products.
The ArgentBranch product range is part of a new generation of networking systems. It is
designed to integrate both computer and telephony requirements for the small to medium
office. This is achieved by fully utilising:
yThe speed and comprehensive feature set offered by ISDN.
yThe facilities offered by Microsoft Windows95, Windows98, Windows 2000
and Microsoft Windows NT4.
yThe features provided by standard Caller Display telephones or Caller Display units.
All of the above features can be used with the ArgentBranch to provide a fully integrated
voice and data system with features otherwise only available on expensive call centre
systems.
The ArgentBranch will enhance your communications by bringing voice and data
integration to your desktop, provide you with a range of systems designed to make you
more effective and allow you to enjoy the fruits of your consequent success.
ARGENTBRANCH MODULES
The Alchemy ArgentBranch system consists of a series of modules that may be shelf or
rack-mounted as desired. Modules interconnect and can be added simply and quickly as
required. The modules currently available are:
Module Information
ArgentPhone 8/16/30 8/16/30 port stackable phone module.
ArgentWAN3 3 port WAN module for leased line connections to routers,
Internet or other Alchemy systems. Ports can be X.21, V.35 &
V.24.
ArgentHub16 16 Port stackable Ethernet 10BaseT/100 BaseT Hub.
When the ArgentPhone module is deployed in conjunction with the ArgentBranch, the
ISDN connections can be used for conventional telephone, fax or modem connections in
addition to carrying data. The ArgentBranch provides a fully featured, integrated voice
PBX providing enhanced facilities, while requiring only standard and inexpensive
telephone handsets.
The ArgentBranch forwards Caller Display information to the telephone ports and
associated PC(s). This allows the number and name of the caller to be displayed on any
standard analogue phone supporting the Caller Display feature and/or on the PC screen.

The main ArgentBranch PABX features are as follows:
y8-60 Telephone Lines (connections to the Public Switched Telephone Network -
PSTN).
y0-100 Telephone Ports (internal extensions).
yISDN connections to meet your traffic requirements.
yA max. of two ISDN modules. These can be PRI30, BRI8 or a mix of both.
yCall Hold, Forward, Transfer.
yCall Conferencing facility.
yCaller Display on standard CD telephones.
yDDI, MSN, Sub Address Dial in for Separate Telephone and Fax lines.
yAnswer Phone/Voice Mail for unanswered calls.
yCall logging outgoing and incoming.
The main ArgentBranch Office Router features:

yIntegral 8 port Ethernet Hub (10/100BaseT).
ySupports two independent LANs.
yWAN port – supporting an X21,V35 orV24 leased line connection (auto detecting).

yHardware Compression - STAC, MPPC standards for maximum performance.

This Hardware Reference Manual provides technical information on the ArgentBranch,
including; Approval Statements, Safety Declarations, Port Labelling and Pin-Out
Information, Cable Specifications and Technical Specifications.
For configuration information and an overview of the advanced features available on the
ArgentBranch, please refer to the Help Text files on the Installation Wizard CD that
accompanies all new units. This CD is designed to make installation and configuration of
your ArgentBranch as simple as possible.

SAFETY AND HOMOLOGATION STATEMENTS
DECLARATION OF CONFORMITY
See the associated Declaration of Conformity documents, located within the Approvals folder.
STATUTORY RESTRICTIONS
All ISDN and WAN cables used with this product must not be longer than 3m. Refer to Cables, page
23 for details.
The 2A 16V Lump-in-Line PSU supplied with the ArgentBranch must only be connected to
50Hz/60Hz AC power sources in the range 100 – 240V.
AUSTRALIAN REQUIREMENTS
Ensure that User Entries only exist for Terminals that are physically connected to the Phone
Expansion module. Any unused extension ports must not have a User Entry configured, as this will
prevent calls being forwarded to unconnected extensions.
BRI Interface
During the configuration, ensure "000" emergency number is not barred, by performing the
following:
Short Code: "000"
Telephone No.: "000;"
Function: "DialEmergency"
This equipment will be inoperable during mains power failure.
Connections to TS013, the following Bearer Capabilities shall not be used:
7kHz Audio
Video
Restricted Digital Information
If unknown type of number is used in calling party number, the network will use the default CLI.
The system must be configured for Point - Multi point connection to comply with Austel
requirements for connecting to TS013 circuits.
PRI Interface
During the configuration, ensure "000" emergency number is not barred, by performing the
following:
Short Code: "000"
Telephone No.: "000;"
Function: "DialEmergency"
This equipment will be inoperable during mains power failure.

PRODUCT VARIANTS
As a standalone product the ArgentBranch can be used as an IP Router with integral
Firewall. When used in conjunction with any ArgentPhone module the ArgentBranch
acts as a fully featured PBX.
The ArgentBranch 3000 is equipped with 1 x PRI (Primary rate ISDN) module. This
module can be used to provide upto 30 external lines.
The ArgentBranch 3000 provides the following features:
y1 x ISDN PRI (Primary Rate Interface) port.
y1 x Serial Asynchronous data port.
y1 x Serial Synchronous data port.
y6 x Expansion ports (for connecting to ArgentPhone modules).
y8 x 10BaseT/100BaseT LAN ports.
y1 x External Control port.
y1 x Audio input port.
y1 x Free ISDN Slot (for 2nd PRI card or for additional BRI8 card).
The 10BaseT/100BaseT LAN ports are located on the front of the unit, all the other ports
are located on the rear of the unit.
CURRENT COUNTRY VARIANTS
The Alchemy Series ArgentBranch is currently available for the UK and European
markets. One Sales feature covers both markets. Both a two pin European Mains cable
and a Standard three pin UK Mains cable is shipped with every unit.

PORT CONNECTIONS
This section provides information on the use of theArgentBranch ports. It covers:
yDTE Port.
yDC Power Input Connector.
yConnection to Primary Rate ISDN (PRI).
yAudio Input Connector.
yConnection to an X.21, V.35 or V.24/V.28 Leased Line.
yArgent Expansion Ports.
yConnection to a LAN.
yExternal Control Connector.
yConnection to Basic Rate ISDN (BRI).
DTE PORT
The DTE port is presented as a standard 25 way D-Type socket on the rear of the unit.
This port is used by manufacturing and is labelled:

DC POWER INPUT CONNECTOR
The ArgentBranch uses a Lump-in-Line PSU module to provide DC power.
The PSU module is plugged into a suitable mains power outlet and provides a 16Volt/2A
unregulated DC output. This unregulated DC is fed into the unit via the DC Input port
which is a BLUE 2.5mm socket and is labelled:

CONNECTION TO PRIMARY RATE ISDN (PRI)
The ArgentBranch 3000 connects to Primary Rate ISDN. The ArgentBranch 3000
comes supplied with a suitable cable for connection to the ISDN Network. The Primary
Rate ISDN port is labelled as follows:

Additional or replacement ISDN Cables can be obtained by ordering Sales Feature
ARG-ISDNC (part number CABBRINN03M0PP00).

AUDIO INPUT CONNECTOR
A standard 3.5mm Stereo Audio Jack Socket is provided for users who wish to take
advantage of the Music on Hold feature provided by the ArgentBranch.
The Audio Input port will accept Stereo or Mono 3.5mm Jack Plugs and is labelled as
follows:

Specifications, page 34. Details of the port pin-outs can be found in Port Pinouts,
page 17.
CONNECTION TO AN X.21, V.35 OR V.24/V.28 LEASED LINE
The Leased Line port on the rear of the ArgentBranch is labelled as follows:

This port supports a single synchronous data connection, and can support an X.21, V.35
or V.24/V.28 interface. The selection of the required interface is automatically
determined from the pin-out of the appropriate Alchemy Series cable plugged into the
port.
Connection to a Digital Leased Circuit is made by connecting the WAN port on the rear
of the ArgentBranch to the supplied Network Terminating Unit (NTU) via the
appropriate X.21, V.35 or V.24 cable.
This cable can be purchased from any ArgentBranch reseller/distributor by ordering the
appropriate Sales Feature as detailed in the table below, or the user can supply his own
cable so long as the criteria set out in Cables, page 23, are adhered to. Please note that
these cables must not be more than 3m long.

ARGENT EXPANSION PORTS
The ArgentBranch is equipped with six Expansion ports. These are located on the rear of
the unit and are labelled as follows:

The Expansion ports are used to interconnect to other Alchemy Series products i.e. the
ArgentPhone 8/16/30. These products, combined with the ArgentBranch, provide the
user with additional functionality (such as Telephony services when any ArgentPhone
module is connected).
Each Alchemy Series Argent Expansion Module that requires connection to the
ArgentBranch is supplied with the appropriate Expansion Interconnect cable.
If a spare, or replacement, Expansion Interconnect cable is required it can be obtained by
ordering Sales Feature ARG-VIC (part number CABTDMSN01M0PP00).
CONNECTION TO A LAN
Connection to the LAN from the ArgentBranch may be made via one of the eight
10BaseT/100BaseT ports on the front of the unit. The LAN ports on the front of the unit
are not labelled.
The right most LAN port on the front of the unit can be used for cascading to other hubs
without the need for a crossover cable.
The Daisy Chain pushbutton to the right of this port is used to set the mode of this LAN
port (see Port Labeling, page 11 for details). When the Daisy Chain switch is in the OUT
position the port can be connected to a hub without the need for a crossover cable, i.e. the
port is an MDI type port. When the Daisy Chain switch is in the IN position the port can
be connected directly to a PC, as per the other seven 10BaseT/100BaseT LAN ports on
the front of the unit, i.e. the port is an MDI-X type port.

EXTERNAL CONTROL CONNECTOR
A standard 3.5mm Stereo Jack Socket is provided for users who wish to take advantage
of the External Control feature provided by the ArgentBranch product range.
The ArgentBranch External Control feature allows two externally powered relays, or
other such circuits, to be controlled via a single 3.5mm socket.
The External Control port will accept a Stereo or Mono 3.5mm Jack Plug and is labelled
as follows:

CONNECTION TO BASIC RATE ISDN (BRI)
The ArgentBranch 0808 connects to Basic Rate ISDN. The ArgentBranch 3000 has one
free ISDN slot (slot B). A second PRI30 module or a BRI8 module can be installed in this
slot. The ArgentPRI30 or ArgentBRI8 upgrade Features are supplied with suitable
cables for connection to the ISDN Network. Please note that these cables must not be
more than 3m long.
The Basic Rate ISDN ports on the ArgentBRI8 are labelled as follows:
