Lesen Sie diese Anleitung, bevor
Sie den Micropulse Wegaufnehmer
installieren und in Betrieb nehmen.
1.1 Bestimmungsgemäße
Verwendung
Der Micropulse Wegaufnehmer
BTL5 wird zu seiner Verwendung in
eine Maschine oder Anlage einge-
baut. Er bildet zusammen mit einer
Steuerung (SPS) oder mit einem
Master ein Wegmesssystem und
darf nur für diese Aufgabe einge-
setzt werden.
Unbefugte Eingriffe und unzulässige
Verwendung führen zum Verlust
von Gewährleistungs- und
Haftungsansprüchen.
1.2 Qualifiziertes Personal
Diese Anleitung richtet sich an
Fachkräfte, die den Einbau, die
Installation und das Einrichten aus-
führen.
1.3 Einsatz und Prüfung
Für den Einsatz des Wegmesssy-
stems sind die einschlägigen

Sicherheitsvorschriften zu beach-
ten. Insbesondere müssen Maß-
nahmen getroffen werden, dass
bei einem Defekt des Wegmesssy-
stems keine Gefahren für Personen
und Sachen entstehen können.
Hierzu gehören der Einbau zusätz-
licher Sicherheitsendschalter, Not-
aus-Schalter und die Einhaltung
der zulässigen Umgebungsbedin-
gungen.
1.4 Gültigkeit
Diese Anleitung gilt für die Micro-
pulse Wegaufnehmer vom Typ
BTL5-H1...-HC/WC-S94.
Eine Übersicht über die verschie-
denen Versionen finden Sie im Ka-
pitel 6 Ausführungen (Angaben auf
dem Typenschild) auf Seite 8.
Hinweis: Bei Sonderausführun-
gen, durch -SA_ _ _ auf dem
Typenschild gekennzeichnet, kön-

2.1 Eigenschaften

2.2 Funktionsweise
Im Micropulse Wegaufnehmer befin-
det sich der Wellenleiter, geschützt
durch ein Edelstahlrohr. Entlang
des Wellenleiters wird ein
Positionsgeber bewegt, der vom
Anwender mit dem Maschinenteil
verbunden wird, dessen Position
bestimmt werden soll.
Der Positionsgeber definiert die zu
messende Position auf dem
Wellenleiter. Ein intern erzeugter
INIT-Impuls löst in Verbindung mit
dem Magnetfeld des Positionsge-
bers eine Torsionswelle im Wellen-
leiter aus, die durch Magnetostrik-
tion entsteht und mit
Ultraschallgeschwindigkeit fort-
schreitet.
Die zum Ende des Wellenleiters lau-
fende Torsionswelle wird in der
Dämpfungszone absorbiert. Die zum
Beginn der Messstrecke laufende
Welle erzeugt in einer Abnehmer-
spule ein elektrisches Signal. Aus
der Laufzeit der Welle wird die Positi-
on mit einer Auflösung von 5 µm
bestimmt. Dies geschieht mit hoher
Präzision und Reproduzierbarkeit
innerhalb des als Nennlänge ange-
gebenen Messbereichs.
Am Stabende befindet sich die
Dämpfungszone, ein messtech-
nisch nicht nutzbarer Bereich, der
überfahren werden darf.
Die elektrische Verbindung zwi-
schen Wegaufnehmer, Steuerung/
Master und Stromversorgung er-
folgt über Kabel, die über Steck-
verbindungen angeschlossen sind.

2.3 Konfiguration
2.3.1 Default-Einstellung
Der Wegaufnehmer wird mit den fol-
genden Grundeinstellungen geliefert:
– Node-ID 1
– Auflösung:

Geschwindigkeit 0,1 mm/s
– Maximaler Arbeits-/Nutzbereich
– Schaltpunkte/Nocken keine
– Datenübertragung 10 ms

Die Änderung der Default-Einstel-
lungen im BTL erfolgt über das
SDO-Protokoll gemäß DS 301.
2.3.2 Voreinstellungen
Mit den Konfigurationstools CANopen
Configuration Studio (Fa. Ixxat) oder
CANsetter (Fa. Vector) kann die
Parametrierung angepasst werden.
Die Parametrierung kann auch per
SDO von einem anderen Master
aus erfolgen.
Für die Übertragung der Daten
sind im Kommunikationsprofil 2
PDO vorgesehen. In ein PDO kön-
nen bis zu 8 Byte der folgenden
Daten eingebunden werden:
– Positionsdaten, 4 Byte integer
– Geschw.-Daten, 2 Byte integer
– Nockenstatus, 1 Byte integer

3 Einbau
Beim Einbau unbedingt zu
beachten:
Die Anlagefläche des BTL-Gehäu-
ses muss vollständig an der Auf-
nahmefläche anliegen. Der pas-
sende O-Ring muss die Bohrung
perfekt abdichten, d.h. die An-
senkung für den O-Ring muss

Beim Einbau in Hydraulikzylinder
darf der Positionsgeber nicht auf
dem Schutzrohr schleifen. Schüt-
zen Sie das Ende des Schutzrohrs
vor Verschleiß. Der Bohrungs-
durchmesser im Aufnahmekolben
soll mindestens 13 mm betragen.
Um Beschädigungen zu vermeiden,
verwenden Sie die passende Mut-
ter für das Befestigungsgewinde.
Beim Festdrehen des Wegauf-
nehmers darf das Drehmoment von
100 Nm nicht überschritten wer-
den.
Bei waagerechter Montage von
Wegaufnehmern mit Nennlängen
größer als 500 mm empfiehlt es

Wegaufnehmer BTL und Steue-
rung/Master müssen mit einem
geschirmten Kabel verbunden
werden.
Schirmung: Geflecht aus Kupfer-
Einzeldrähten, 85 % Bedeckung.
Der Schirm darf nur auf der Seite
der Steuerung/Master geerdet
werden, um einen Potenzialaus-
gleich – Stromfluss – über den
Schirm zu vermeiden.

Beim Verlegen des Kabels zwi-
schen Wegaufnehmer, Steuerung
und Stromversorgung ist die Nähe
von Starkstromleitungen wegen der
Einkopplung von Störungen zu
meiden.
Besonders kritisch sind induktive
Einstreuungen durch Netzoberwel-
len (z.B. von Phasenanschnitt-
steuerungen), für die der Kabel-
schirm nur geringen Schutz bietet.
Über die CANopen-Schnittstelle
wird das Signal zur Steuerung
übertragen.

5 Inbetriebnahme
5.1 Anschlüsse prüfen
Obwohl die Anschlüsse gegen
Verpolung geschützt sind, können
Bauteile durch falsche Verbindun-
gen und Überspannung beschädigt
werden. Bevor Sie einschalten,
prüfen Sie deshalb die Anschlüsse
sorgfältig.
5.2 Einschalten des Systems
Beachten Sie, dass das System
beim Einschalten unkontrollierte Be-
wegungen ausführen kann, insbe-
sondere beim ersten Einschalten
und wenn die Wegmesseinrichtung
Teil eines Regelsystems ist, dessen
Parameter noch nicht eingestellt
sind. Stellen Sie daher sicher,
dass hiervon keine Gefahren aus-
gehen können.
5.3 Messwerte prüfen
Nach dem Austausch bzw. nach
der Reparatur eines Wegauf-
nehmers wird empfohlen, die Wer-
te in der Anfangs- und Endstellung
des Positionsgebers im Handbe-
trieb zu überprüfen. Ergeben sich
andere Werte * als vor dem Aus-
tausch bzw. der Reparatur, dann
sollte eine Korrektur vorgenommen
werden.
* Änderungen oder fertigungs-
bedingte Streuungen vorbehalten.
5.4 Funktionsfähigkeit prüfen
Die Funktionsfähigkeit des Weg-
messsystems und aller damit ver-
bundenen Komponenten ist regel-
mäßig zu überprüfen und zu
protokollieren.
5.5 Funktionsstörung
Wenn Anzeichen erkennbar sind,
dass das Wegmesssystem nicht
ordnungsgemäß arbeitet, ist es au-
ßer Betrieb zu nehmen und gegen
unbefugte Benutzung zu sichern.

Read this manual before installing
and operating the Micropulse trans-
ducer.
1.1 Proper application
The BTL5 Micropulse transducer is
intended to be installed in a ma-
chine or system. Together with a
controller (PLC) or a master it com-
prises a position measuring system
and may only be used for this pur-
pose.
Unauthorized modifications and
non-permitted usage will result in
the loss of warranty and liability
claims.
1.2 Qualified personnel
This guide is intended for special-
ized personnel who will perform the
installation and setup of the system.
1.3 Use and inspection
The relevant safety regulations must
be followed when using the trans-

ducer system. In particular, steps
must be taken to ensure that should
the transducer system become
defective no hazards to persons or
property can result. This includes
the installation of additional safety
limit switches, emergency shutoff
switches and maintaining the per-
missible ambient conditions.

This guide applies to the model
BTL5-H1...-HC/WC-S94 Micropulse
transducer.
An overview of the various models
can be found in section 6 Versions
(indicated on product label) on
page 8.

2.1 Characteristics

2.2 Function
The transducer contains a
waveguide enclosed by an outer
stainless steel rod. A magnet at-
tached to the moving member of
the machine or to the cylinder pis-
ton is moved over the rod and its
position constantly updated.
The magnet defines the measured
position on the waveguide. An
internally generated INIT pulse
interacts with the magnetic field of
the magnet to generate a magneto-
strictive torsional wave in the
waveguide which propagates at
ultrasonic speed.
The torsional wave arriving at the
end of the waveguide is absorbed in
the damping zone. The wave arriv-
ing at the beginning of the wave-
guide creates an electrical signal in
the coil surrounding the waveguide.
The wave propagation time is used
to define the position with a resolu-
tion of 5 µm. This takes place with
high precision and repeatability
within the measuring range indi-
cated as the nominal stroke length.
At the rod end is a damping zone,
within which no reliable signal is
available, but which may be entered
by the magnet.
The electrical connection between
the transducer, the controller/mas-
ter and the power supply is via
cables, which are connected using
connectors.

2.3 Configuration
2.3.1 Default settings
The transducer is delivered with
the following basic settings:
– Node-ID 1
– Resolution:
Position 5 µm
Speed: 0.1 mm/s
– Maximum usable range
– Switch points / Cam None
– Data transmission 10 ms

Changing the default settings on
the BTL is carried out with the
SDO protocol according to DS 301.
2.3.2 Presettings
The parameter setting procedure
can be adapted by using the con-
figuration tools CANopen Configu-
ration Studio (available from Ixxat)
or CANsetter (available from Vec-
tor). Parameters can also be set
via SDO from another master.
2 PDOs are provided in the com-
munication profile for the transmis-
sion of data. Up to 8 bytes of the
following data can be included in a
PDO:
– Position data, 4 Byte integer
– Speed data, 2 Byte integer
– Cam status, 1 Byte integer

Important Installation Notes:
The contact surface of the trans-
ducer must be completely con-
tacted by the mounting surface.
The O-ring supplied must make a
perfect pressure seal, i.e. the
bevel for the O-ring must be con-
figured exactly as shown in

When installing in a hydraulic cylin-
der, do not allow the magnet ring to
rub against the pressure tube. The
bore diameter in the piston and
cylinder rod should be at least
13 mm.
To achieve secure mounting, use the
proper nut for the mounting thread.
When tightening the nut, do not
exceed a tightening torque of
100 Nm.
For horizontal mounting of trans-
ducer with stroke lengths greater
than 500 mm, the pressure tube
should be supported or attached at
its end.

M18×1.5 thread or a 3/4"-16UNF
thread for mounting. The sealing is
carried cut with the O-ring supplied
at the flange facing.

ommend to use non-magnetizable

ing electrical connections:

ground potential.

compatibility (EMC) which Balluff
warrants with the CE Mark, the

To avoid coupled noise, avoid
proximity to high-current lines
when routing cable between trans-
ducer, controller, and power sup-
ply. Inductive coupled noise from
AC harmonics (e.g., from phase
controls) are especially critical,
against which the cable shield
offers very little protection.
The signal is transmitted to the
host controller via the CANopen
interface.

is a function of the cable length.

Therefore make sure that no haz-
ards could result from these situa-
tions.
5.3 Check output values
After replacing or repairing a trans-
ducer, it is advisable to verify the
values for the start and end position
of the magnet in manual mode. If
values other* than those present
before the replacement or repair are
found, a correction should be made.
* Transducers are subject to modifi-
cation or manufacturing tolerances.
5.4 Check functionality
The functionality of the transducer
system and all its associated com-
ponents should be regularly
checked and recorded.
5.5 Fault conditions
When there is evidence that the
transducer system is not operating
properly, it should be taken out of
service and guarded against unau-
thorized use.
5.1 Check connections
Although the connections are polar-
ity reversal protected, components
can be damaged by improper con-
nections and overvoltage. Before
you apply power, check the connec-
tions carefully.
5.2 Turning on the system
Note that the system may execute
uncontrolled movements when first
turned on or when the transducer is
part of a closed-loop system whose
parameters have not yet been set.
