Foreword
Thank you for buying the Benjamin ComfyNest. This manual contains all the information you
need to learn how to use this product. Please read through this information carefully before
working with the product. This manual belongs with the attached instruction card.
This information is aimed at healthcare professionals. Familiarise yourself with using the Com-
fyNest together with parents/carers. Please read and understand this manual in full before using
the product. These user instructions explain how to use the ComfyNest safely in the hospital
setting.
Studies show that premature babies are better able to maintain their body temperature in a
nest, helping to increase weight gain. What’s more, restricting a baby’s movement has a positive
effect on respiration, quality of sleep and emotional rest. Neurological development too is posi-
tively inuenced using the correct positioning.
The ComfyNest plus related accessories is a complete package that is designed to contribute to
the support, positioning and restriction of the movement of premature babies and babies with
a low birth weight. ComfyNest was developed in collaboration with NIDCAP-trained specialists
and follows the latest insights relating to Developmental Care.
This is the original manual. Please store it safely!

Benjamin ComfyNest
1. Introduction
1.1 Intended and unintended use
The ComfyNest and related accessories are designed to support the positioning, supporting
and restriction of premature babies or babies with a low birth weight. The ComfyNest offers the
option to position the baby in a midline orientation and thus promotes hand-mouth contact and
hand-hand contact, so the baby feels more comfortable and is better able to self-regulate. By
leaving the hands of the infant free, the infant can spontaneously touch her face. In the Com-
fyNest, the baby can be weighed, moved, examined or transported with minimum stress and
disruption.
The ComfyNest and accessories may only be used in a monitored setting and under constant
medical supervision in the neonatology department.
The ComfyNest and related accessories should not be used:
• at home (owing to an increased risk of cot death when using positioning aids in the cot);
• for babies with a weight over 2500 grams;
• when taking X-rays – remove the inner roll for lateral X-rays (lateral position), as the roll
may cause a blurry X-ray (this is not necessary for posterior-anterior (PA) X-rays);
• for babies requiring a “body-cooling pack” for the treatment of a cerebral oedema (they
do not fit properly in the ComfyNest);
• for babies that are being prepared to go home.
The ComfyPillow should not be used:
• for babies with severe respiratory problems (lying in the supine position is not an opti-
mal posture for them and use of the ComfyPillow is not recommended);
• for babies with cranial abnormalities.
Any other use than that described above in this manual is considered incorrect use.
1.2 Limitation of liability
If the product is used in a manner not in compliance with its intended use, the liability (whether
arising out of or related to manufacture and sale of the goods, their demonstration, sales rep-
resentation, use, performance, or otherwise, including any liability based upon Benjamin Care‘s
product warranty) for the proper function of the product is permanently transferred to the own-
er or user.

2. Preventive measures and safety instructions
• Please read and understand these instructions fully before each use.
• The ComfyNest may only be used as described in section 1.1 Intended and unintended
use.
• The ComfyNest and accessories may only be used in a monitored setting and under
constant medical supervision in the neonatology department by qualified medical per-
sonnel who are aware of the currently known risks and benefits of using the product.
• Use the ComfyNest and the accessories as aids to realise a comfortable posture and to
provide restriction of movement while factoring in the condition and age of the baby.
• Check the baby’s temperature regularly while it is lying in the ComfyNest. Using a nest
and other positioning aids can inuence a baby’s temperature. Children with a tendency
to overheat who are placed in a nest require extra careful monitoring, preferably using a
temperature sensor on the skin.
• Never pierce the ComfyNest, the ComfyPillow or the ComfyStar with needles or other
sharp objects. This could damage the inner roll, causing the filling to come into contact
with the baby.
• To prevent infections, the applicable hygiene rules must be followed strictly. This means
at the very least that all parts are cleaned and carefully dried before use and that a clean
cover is used every day.
• Remove the ComfyNest and accessories when taking X-rays.
• Based on the hospital protocol, remove the ComfyNest and accessories gradually as the
baby nears its discharge date. It is important that both the parents and the child itself
get used to it lying in a cot without positioning aids, as these should not be used in the
domestic setting owing to the higher risk of cot death.
• Never use the ComfyNest or accessories if they are damaged or permanently stained.

3.3 The ComfyStar
The ComfyStar is a soft bag of granules designed to support the baby where needed and en-
sure optimal positioning. It may be placed around the head, neck or hips or laid against an arm
or leg.
3. Productspecifications
3.1 Classification
The ComfyNest is not a medical aid as it is only used to provide greater comfort for the baby.
This product is not intended for diagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes as referred to in Arti-
cle 1. sub 2 of the Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC. This product complies with CEN/TS
142372015 Textiles for healthcare and social services facilities.
3.2 The ComfyNest
The ComfyNest comprises a washable inner roll, filled with granules, and a separate machi-
ne-washable cover. The exible and supple inner roll of the ComfyNest makes it possible to
shape the nest in such a way that the baby is supported in every posture. Also, the size of the
nest can easily be adjusted.
The nest has four straps. These are designed to support the shoulders and hips of the baby in
the right posture and offer restraint from above. The straps help the baby to maintain a midline
position and provide restraint of uncontrolled movements that cost the baby energy. They may
be fastened either straight or crosswise around the baby and the nest.
The underside of the nest is made of anti-slip material. This ensures that the nest does not slip,
even when the bed is in an inclined position. The fabric loops to the top of the ComfyNest are
designed to attach ComfyKiss scent cloths or a pacifier if required. The ComfyNest and the
ComfyPillow are available in two sizes. Small is suitable for babies in the weight class 500-1500
grams, and Large for babies with a weight between 1500 and 2500 grams.

3.4 The ComfyPillow
For the development of a proper rounded shape for the head and to prevent a habitual pos-
ture, it is important that the head is turned frequently. When the baby is lying in the supine
position, the ComfyPillow is used to keep the head in the right position. The ComfyPillow is also
used to bolster a baby’s head if it requires respiratory support.
The ComfyPillow comprises a washable inner roll, filled with granules, and a separate ma-
chine-washable cover. The underside of the ComfyPillow is made of anti-slip material. This en-
sures that the ComfyPillow does not slip, even when the bed is in an inclined position. The Com-
fyNest and the ComfyPillow are available in two sizes. Small is suitable for babies in the weight
class 500-1500 grams, and Large for babies with a weight between 1500 and 2500 grams.

3.5 The ComfyKiss
Scent plays an essential role in bonding between mother and child. The use of ComfyKiss scent
cloths contributes to this. The scent cloth is worn by the mother against her body, for instance
in her bra. Fathers may also wear the scent cloth. The cloth absorbs the parental scent, and can
then be laid by the baby’s head.
If required, the cloths may be taken home at discharge as a keepsake from the incubator period.
Each set has two ComfyKiss cloths, so both the baby and the mother/father always have one.
Using the ribbons, the ComfyKiss can be attached to the loops on the ComfyNest. The baby
may also enjoy grabbing these ribbons.

4. Use
4.1 Preparation
• Carefully clean and dry the inner roll, inner bags and outer covers before each use in
line with the instructions in Section 5.
• Before each use, check that the inner roles (ComfyNest, ComfyPillow) or the inner bag
(ComfyStar) are intact, free of holes, tears, loose threads and permanent stains.
• Slide the inner roll and the inner bag into the appropriate covers and seal the openings.
• Before putting the inner rolls of the ComfyNest or the ComfyPillow in their covers, check
the size labels to ensure that both elements have the same size.
• Then lay the ComfyNest and accessories in the incubator so they adjust to the correct
temperature.
4.2 Positioning and supporting the baby
1. Weigh the baby and select size S or L depending on the weight. Size S is suitable for
babies with a weight between 500 and 1500 grams. Size L is suitable for babies with a
weight between 1500 and 2500 grams.
2. Check the baby’s temperature before placing it in the ComfyNest to stay alert to tem-
perature uctuations.
3. Explain the use and purpose of the ComfyNest to the parents. Use the instruction card
as an aid.
4. Position the baby on its stomach, side or back. Consult the relevant illustration on the
Benjamin ComfyNest instruction card.
Ensure that:
• the head is always in line with the body;
• the feet are supported against the lower edge;
• if the baby is in the lateral position, it lies in a way that enables mouth-hand contact; if
the baby is in the lateral position, its back rests against the edge of the nest;
• if the baby is in the supine position, it is supported by the edge of the ComfyNest and
the hands can be placed together.
5. If the baby is in the lateral position, place the straps crosswise or straight over the shoul-
der and pelvis. The straps are to provide restraint, but must not restrict the baby in its
spontaneous movements!
The straps must not be so tight that the baby can no longer move its
limbs – the baby may not be tied down! Excessively tight straps could
obstruct the baby’s respiration.
De banden mogen nooit geknoopt of gestrikt worden, dit zou een
snelle toegang tot de baby kunnen beperken.

The straps must not be so tight that the baby can no longer move its
limbs – the baby may not be tied down! Excessively tight straps could
obstruct the baby’s respiration.
Do not lay the ComfyStar on the baby’s head, as this could lead to as-
phyxiation.
Do not lay the ComfyStar on the baby’s chest or stomach, as this can ob-
struct respiration.
The ComfyStar can be too heavy for smaller premature babies. Only use
the ComfyStar on parts of the baby’s body for short periods and always
check in advance whether the ComfyStar is suitable for the baby.
6. Tuck the ends of the straps under the nest so they do not come loose, but ensure that
the straps do not cause any bumps or creases under the baby.
7. Use the ComfyStar for extra support, restriction or comfort, for instance to support the
head or hips. Consult the ComfyStar illustration on the Benjamin ComfyNest accessories
instruction card.
8. If desired, place the ComfyPillow around the baby’s head in line with the repositioning
schedule, so that the head is supported when lying in the supine position. Consult the
ComfyPillow illustration on the Benjamin ComfyNest accessories instruction card.
Use the ComfyPillow only as part of a strict repositioning schedule in line
with hospital protocol. The ComfyPillow is not intended to be used to
support the head when lying in the supine position for protracted peri-
ods
Ensure that the baby is lying in the ComfyPillow with its head in midline
position.
9. Give a ComfyKiss scent cloth to the mother and let her wear it on her body. After a few
hours, or the following day, place the scent cloth close to the baby’s nose. Attach the
scent cloth with a ribbon to the loop on the ComfyNest. Consult the ComfyKiss illustra-
tion on the Benjamin ComfyNest accessories instruction card.

4.3 Removing the baby from the ComfyNest
1. Loosen the straps.
2. If applicable, remove the ComfyPillow and/or the ComfyStar.
5. Washing instructions
The ComfyNest, ComfyStar and ComfyPillow comprise two parts: an inner part filled with gran-
ules and a protective cover with anti-slip material on the underside.
The covers of the ComfyNest, the ComfyPillow and the ComfyStar are made of a technically
advanced fabric that is made of a polyester-cotton mix. This material dries four times faster than
cotton and remains odour-free.
It is advisable to clean the covers every day or more often if they are visibly dirty.
The covers can be washed in a washing machine at 60 degrees. Washing at 90 degrees is also
possible, but that will shorten the lifespan of these covers. The covers should not be ironed.
The surface of the inner rolls (ComfyNest, ComfyPillow) and inner bags (ComfyStar) is made
of washable material, and can be cleaned according to hospital protocol. The inner rolls may
also be cleaned in a washing machine at 90 degrees. After washing the inner rolls, dry them in
a spin drier selecting the longest drying programme – extra dry or very dry. This prevents the
filling inadvertently remaining moist, which can lead to potential hygiene problems. Always
consult the hospital’s hygiene department before cleaning the inner rolls/bags in the washing
machine and drying them in a spin drier.
To ensure body scent is fully absorbed, the ComfyKiss scent cloths are 100% cotton. The cloths
can be washed in a washing machine at 60 degrees.
Washing at 90 degrees is also possible, but that will shorten the lifespan of ComfyKiss cloths.
