Powering Options
PoE Power over Ethernet (802.11af/at)
Mini can receive power and data through a single Ethernet cable.
Always use a certified 802.11af/at switch with minimum 12w port
power capacity.
Always use geniune BirdDog power adapters.
3rd party products can cause permanent damage.
Dc Power (strictly 5-18v)
Once a DC cable is connected the unit will
automatically power on.
Once PoE Ethernet cable is insered the unit will
automatically power on.

Booting up your BirdDog Mini
As soon as BirdDog Mini detects a power input signal the left hand
'power/fault' light will light up green.1
Typically the status will change after 10-20 seconds, at this point
the middle 'status' light will light up blue to indicate the second
stage of booting has begun.2
The final stage of booting will show the status light change to white
indicating the BirdDog is ready and able to be found on the
computer network.3
After initial boot up is complete your Mini unit will be visible as a
source on any NDI compatible devices on the SAME ethernet
subnet.
For further networking architecture instructions including routing
please consult either your system administrator or the support
page at bird-dog.tv

Determining video input
Valid video input
If BirdDog Mini detects a valid HDMI video input, the status LED
will change to blue.1This indicates that the source is detected and
the BirdDog is now streaming video over the NDI interface.
No Input
If the BirdDog Mini can not sync to a source or has no source
attached the status LED will display red.2This indicates that the
BirdDog Mini is operational, available on the network but not
detecting a valid source.
Please log into the BirdDog Mini web interface and change the
input settings to match your source device.

Tally light behaviour
Tally is used in productions for both talent and camera operators
to be aware which camera is being transmitted live to air (Program)
or being previewed with the intention of going live to air next
(Preview). BirdDog receives these signals from devices that
support Tally such as vision switchers and displays this information
on the internal screen.
If no destination device is receiving the NDI signal being genera-
ted by Mini in either PROGRAM or PREVIEW mode, Mini's Tally
light will not illuminate.1
If a destination device is receiving the NDI signal being generated
by Mini on the PREVIEW bus, the tally light will illuminate GREEN.2
If a destination device is receiving the NDI signal being generated
by Mini on the PROGRAM bus, the tally light will illuminate RED.3

Connecting a video source
If the video input format changes while BirdDog Mini is active, the
unit will automatically reconfigure its settings to accommodate the
change when set to 'AUTO' mode on the web configuration
interface. The process of reconfiguring the inputs takes approxima-
tely 3 seconds and is not recommended during a live production.
BirdDog Mini accepts HDMI video inputs, refer to the latest release
notes for confirmation of the current supported video rates and
resolutions.
Once your BirdDog Mini has booted up succesfully it will automati-
cally detect the incoming format and set everything up accordingly.
If you would like to manually configure your input, this can be done
via the web interface.

Accessing the web configuration console
After initial boot up is complete your BirdDog Mini unit will be
visible as a source on any NDI compatible devices on the SAME
ethernet subnet.
For further networking architecture instructions including routing
please consult either your system administrator or the support
page at bird-dog.tv
As BirdDog progresses through its boot-up sequence it will cycle
through various status modes as described in the section 'Booting
up your BirdDog Mini'.
Once the boot cycle is complete the status LED will illuminate
blue. At this point the Web configuration console is available,
please type the following URL into your web browser:
http://birddog-xxxxx.local
Where xxxxx is the last 5 digits of
the serial number on the sticker
of your device (lower case).
Default password: birddog

Your computer may require some prerequisite software installed to
enter the above URL successfully.
Please ensure Apple Bonjour is installed on your computer, the
installation package for this is available at:
bird-dog.tv/firmware
Alternative access to the Web configuration console
As an alternative to directly typing in the URL of your BirdDog unit,
BirdDog Finder is a beta (pre-release) application available for
download at:
bird-dog.tv/firmware
Once launched this application will list all NDI capable devices on
your network including BirdDog units and allow you to directly
open the configuration console.
Simply click 'Manage' on your BirdDog device listed in the
BirdDogFinder application, this will take you to your default web
browser and load the configuration console.

Setting your video input
It is important to set the video input correctly within the web
configuration console, if the input is not set to the required settings
then either no video will be displayed or unexpected video results
can occur.
To access the video settings press the video menu option at the
top of the console.
Begin by selecting either AUTO or MANUAL as your primary
source setting. In most cases it is as simple as leaving the
Configuration set to Auto.
If you are not seeing the expected video results on your NDI
receiver with AUTO then manually configure the settings.

Manual Settings
Colour Space
In HDMI manual operation you have an option to select colour
space, in general the following is the expected colour space:
RGB | Computer based sources
YUV | Most video sources
YVU | Some computer sources like Apple Mac
Please set this setting to match your cameras setting or experiment
until you see the expected results in your NDI receiver.
Note • Auto Configuration
Whilst all care has been given to automatically configure
all video sources correctly occasionally cameras output
specific timing, this may require you to manually configure
your video input.

Connecting and receiving the NDI video stream
Once you have powered on and configured your BirdDog Mini unit
it should automatically appear on any NDI-enabled device as a
video source.
Once BirdDog shows a blue status light
illuminated is it operational.
As each NDI receiving device differs in it's configuration it is
important to consult your software or hardware vendors operating
manual to correctly find the NDI sources available to your device.
On the NDI Studio Monitor Application it is simply a matter of right
clicking your mouse and selecting the BirdDog source from the list.
On a NewTek TriCaster Series device simply double-click on the
monitor window of the source you wish to load BirdDog into and
select the BirdDog source from the drop down source menu.

Network configuration reset
Once activated, the Network reset function will flash the tally
screen repeatedly between Red and Green.
Once complete (approximately 10 seconds) the unit will stop
flashing the tally screen indicating that BirdDog is functioning and
can see a network connection.
Network configuration reset will return the BirdDog device name to
default (birddog-xxxxx) and reset the network settings to DHCP.
From time to time it may be necessary to reset the network settings
on your BirdDog unit. If your unit was configured with a static IP
address and is now on a different network for example.
To activate the reset function simply
insert a paper clip and depress
the Reset switch for 6 seconds.
It is important that the BirdDog is powered up and
operating at this time (with the status light either white,
blue or red).

Automatic network configuration (DHCP)
BirdDog Mini will automatically acquire a valid network address
from your network infrastructure, this is known as DHCP.
If your computer network does not have a DHCP server present,
after 20 seconds the BirdDog unit will fall back to a fixed IP
address.
Once the BirdDog Mini has full booted up you can then access the
BirdDog Mini web console via the fall back IP address in your web
browser on a computer with it’s IP address set to the same subnet
range. You may then set the fixed IP address of BirdDog Mini to be
suitable for your network environment.

Regularly check the above website to updates, tips and tricks
as well as troubleshooting advice.
Unit will not power on
If powering by PoE, ensure your network switch hardware is
capable of PoE/PoE+ power delivery.
If powering via DC please ensure the supplied DC power pack is
securely plugged in at both ends.
Can not see BirdDog on network
Ensure your network has a DHCP server, these are commonly part
of your Internet router hardware.
Can not see BirdDog as a source
If BirdDog does not appear as a selectable video source in your
application it may be because it is not currently receiving a valid
video signal, please ensure you are delivering a compatible video
signal and reboot the device or press restart video in the web
console.
Firmware update did not complete
If your firmware update did not complete successfully it may be
because the unit could not access the Internet to verify the update
completely, please try again on a network that has access to the
Internet.
Video is not smooth or corrupted
If your video is not looking correct please change the video input
settings from Auto to Manual in the web interface and force the
