In this manual, we have compiled advice for you about handling your
bike as well as many interesting ideas about bike technology, its
maintenance and care. We recommend that you carefully read this
manual. It is worth your while, even if you’ve spent your whole life
riding bicycle. In recent years, bike technology has evolved to a great
GHJUHH%HIRUH\RXJHWVWDUWHGZLWK\RXUQHZELNHIRUWKH³UVWWLPH
you should carefully read the chapter called «Before your FIRST
ride».
In order to enjoy your ride, before sitting on the bike, you should
perform the minimal operational check described in the chapter
called «Before starting ALL rides». This manual cannot provide
you with all the knowledge of a bike mechanic. That is why this
manual is centered on the bike that you have just acquired and the
common parts, and also shows you the most important warnings
and advice.
When you do maintenance work and exhaustive repairs, you should
have in mind at all times that the instructions and advice apply
exclusively to this bike.
This advice does not apply to all bikes. The described tasks do not
entirely apply to the multitude of models and variants. We ask that at
all times you take the supplier instructions into account for parts that
your BMW garage has sent you.
Keep in mind that the instructions may be followed by anyone who
has the necessary experience or skill. Some tasks may require
special additional tools or additional instructions.
Before getting started, we would like to point out a few things that
are very important to us as cyclists: Do not drive at any time without
the appropriate helmet or without glasses and try to always wear the
DSSURSULDWHFORWKLQJIRUULGLQJDELNHRUDWOHDVWDSDLURIFORVH³WWLQJ
pants and footwear that connects to the pedals. On the road, always
GULYHDWWHQWLYHO\DQGWDNHLQWRDFFRXQWWKHWUDI³FQRUPVLQRUGHUWR
avoid putting yourself or others in danger.
This manual cannot teach you how to ride a bike. When you ride a
bike, be aware that it is a partially dangerous activity and that the
driver of the bike must maintain control.

40
EN
Like all sports, you can get hurt while riding a bike. When you get
on a bike, you must be aware of these risks and accept them. Take
into account at all times that a bicycle is not equipped with the
same safety devices as other vehicles, like a car body or an airbag.
That is why you must ride carefully and respect the other road
users. Do not drive at any time under the effects of medications,
drugs or alcohol or when you are tired. Do not travel at any time
with another person on the bike and always keep your hands on
the handlebar.
Take into account the legal norms with respect to the off-road
use of the bikes. These norms differ in each country. Respect the
environment when you go through forests and prairies. Only ride the
bike on marked and reinforced paths and roads.

In order to do so, go to the front page of the instructions of use.
Here, all of the important parts are described. While reading, leave

1.2 Responsibility.
If you have any questions about any of the measures described in
this manual, go to your BMW dealer. The only person responsible for
not complying with the instructions described here is the owner of
the bike. We recommend that you allow your commercial distributor
to carry out the maintenance procedures.
1.3 Safety.
Warning: If you wish to use the bike on public roads, it must have
the lighting and acoustic signals required in that country.
Warning: With the aim of preserving the physical integrity of the
cyclist, BMW recommends the use of a safety helmet authorized
for each road, which is required for use thereof.

do not use these devices.
Warning: Do not attach a any type of luggage carrier or baby
seat to a carbon seat post.
Warning: Do not use any part or accessory not designed for this
bike. This can cause accidents and will invalidate the warranty.
The bike label contains the following information:
ŶInscription: Maximum load

To check that the bike is being used according to its intended
purpose, closely read the corresponding paragraph in that EN norm:
ŶDIN EN 15194:
Bikes - Cycles with electrical assistance - EPAC bikes.
This European norm is designed for electrically powered cycles with

safety requirements and the test methods to qualify the construction
and the mounting of the electric-powered cycle and the mounting
parts of the system operate with a 36 Volt battery or that is supplied
with a charger equipped with a charge capacity of 230 volts. This
European norm establishes the requirements and the test methods
for the performance management systems and the electric circuits
(including the charge system for qualifying the construction and
the mounting of cycles with electrical assistance) in addition to the
mounting parts of the systems that work with a current of 36 volts or
that are supplied with a charger equipped with a charge capacity of
230 volts.
Warning: The use of the bike for an intention different than those
for which it was designed may cause severe accidents, including
death. In the case of child bikes, be sure that the children know
well how to drive the bike, especially the brake system.

Attention: Like all mechanical parts, your bike parts are
subject to wear down. The various parts and materials may
react to wear and fatigue in different ways. When the useful life
of a part is exceeded, it may suddenly break and cause injuries
to the rider. Cracks, scratches and worn colors on the most
used areas indicate that the part has already exceeded its
useful life and needs to be changed.

3 WARNING ABOUT THE
INSTRUCTIONS OF USE.
%HIRUHWDNLQJ\RXU³UVWULGH
1. Only use the bike for the purposes for which it was designed,
otherwise there is a risk that the bike suffers brakage or failures.
Danger of falling!
2. Are you familiar with the brake system? Check that the front
wheel brake reacts to the same hand brake that you are used to
(right or left). If this is not the case, you must get used to the new
position because unconsciously activating the front wheel brake
may cause a fall. You can also ask your BMW dealer to modify the
hand brake.
It is possible that modern brake systems have a much stronger
braking effect than the brakes that were used before! Before
anything else, test the brakes on a smooth, anti-slip surface.

scarce or in the dark is very dangerous. The rest of the roadway
users will not see you or will notice your presence too late. When
you ride on the road, you will always need an authorized lighting
device. When darkness falls, turn on the light.
Do not ride your bike if it does not comply with one of these
points! A defective bike may cause severe accidents! If you
are not completely sure or have a question, contact your
BMW dealer!
Regularly check your bicycle in search of signs of wear,
scratches, kinks, worn colors or the start of cracking. Parts
whose useful life has been exceeded may suddenly fail.
Regularly bring your bicycle to a BMW dealer in order to
change the parts in question, if necessary.
3.3 Normal maintenance.
Your bike requires regular maintenance, in addition to a minimum
number of periodic reviews. The periodicity of the maintenance
measures depends on the type of vehicle (cruise bike, race bike,
mountain bike), in addition to the frequency and the conditions of
use.
Take a look at the Maintenance and Repair Calendar on page 67 of
this manual.
Warning: We recommend that your distributor perform these
processes. The periodicity information only takes into
consideration the values indicated in conditions of normal use.
In the case of mountain bikes, the intervals are reduced due to
intensive use.

3.6 Reviewing the braking distance.
Before each use, you should analyze the perfect operation of the
front and rear brakes. Worn cables must be changed immediately.
We recommend that you squeeze both brakes evenly to avoid falls,
especially when the road is wet.
In damp terrain, the braking distance increases 40% compared with
dry terrain.
3.7 Cleaning.
In order to properly maintain the bike, we recommend that you follow
these measures of basic prevention:
ŶClean dirt and mud with a damp sponge and a light cleaning
product. When cleaning the paint, to not use solutions or very
strong alkaline cleaning products.
ŶThe plastic parts should only be cleaned with soapy water.
ŶThe tyres may be cleaned with a sponge or a brush and soapy
water.
ŶAfter cleaning the bicycle, dry it by carefully rubbing it with a soft
cloth.
ŶAfter each wash, you should grease the transmission elements.
Warning: Avoid using pressure cleaning apparatuses and do
not use steam cleaners at all times.

5.2 Cycling instructions and tips.
When does the e-bike drive operate?
The drive unit permits the cyclist to use the bike exactly as a
conventional bike. The drive unit will deliver the required assistance,
that will depend on the force applied to the pedals by the cyclist.
This assistance will be therefore only provided when the cyclist is
pedalling. This applies regardless of the assist level selected.
The assistance provided by the drive unit will be available at speeds

– When you are not pedalling.
– When there is no residual battery capacity.
– When the automatic power off function is activated (see

setting off on long trips, gain experience of how different
parameters and ambient conditions affect the range of your
e-bike.
Effects on range.
The range is affected by many factors, such as:
– Assist level. The higher the selected assist level, the shorter the
range (in identical ride conditions).
– Gear changing style
– Type of tyre
– Tyre pressure
– Deterioration of the battery
– Route type (slopes) and conditions (road surface)
– Weather conditions (e.g. head wind, ambient temperature etc.)
– Weight of e-bike
– Payload.
Careful handling of the BMW Urban E-Bike.
Take care with the temperatures at which the e-bike components
are operated and stored. Protect the drive unit, the display unit and
the battery pack from extreme temperatures (e.g. due to intensive
sunlight without ventilation to compensate). The components
(particularly the battery pack) might be damaged by extreme
temperatures.
