BrookfieldEngineeringLabs.,Inc.Page3ManualNo.M/02-215I.INTRODUCTIONTheyieldpointisthepointatwhichamaterialbeginstoflow.Theassociatedpropertiesaretheyieldstressandyieldstrain.Theyieldstressisthecriticalshearstress,appliedtothesample,atwhichthematerialbeginstoflowasaliquid.Theyieldstrainisthedeformation,resultingfromtheappliedstress,atwhichtheflowstarts.Manymaterialsaredesignedtohaveayieldpoint,sothatthebehavioroftheirproductssatisfiesvariouscustomerneeds.Foodsoftenhaveyieldpoints.Ketchupinparticularmustflowoutofabottlewhenshakenorsqueezed,butthensolidifyonthetargetedfoodsuchasfrenchfries.Shakingorsqueezingthebottlestressestheketchupsothatitflows;aftertheketchupsettlesonthefries,itsstructurerebuildssotheketchup“sits”inplaceratherthanflowingoffthefrieslikewater.Puddingshaveyieldpoints,aswell.The“body”ofthepuddingappealstoconsumers–it’ssolidatrest,yetit’seasilyspoonedoutofitscupandiseasytoeat.Thus,theyieldbehaviorofmanyfoodscontributestothefoodtexturethatwelike.Manypaintshavelowyieldstresses.Manylatexhousepaints,forexample,areeasilystirredorpoured.Brushingorsprayingprovidesenoughstresssothatthepaintflowseasilyandsmoothlyoverapaintedwall.However,athinlayerofappliedpaint(ifagoodone!),allowedtorestundisturbedonthesurface,regainsitsstructurequicklysothatthereisverylittleunsightly“dripping”afterwards.Thesmoothappearanceofthepaintedsurfaceisveryappealingtothehomeowner.TheprincipalofoperationoftheYR-1Rheometeristodriveavanespindle(whichisimmersedinthetestmaterial)atverylowrotationalspeed.TheresistanceofthematerialtomovementismeasuredbyobservingincreasingtorquevaluesastheYR-1motorrotatesfasterthanthespindle.Thedisplacementofthematerialbythespindleismeasuredbythedeflectionofthecalibratedspiralspringinsidetheinstrument.Springdeflectionismeasuredwitharotarytransducer.TheshearstressmeasurementrangeoftheYR-1(inPascals)isdeterminedbythesizeandshapeofthevanespindle,andthefullscaletorqueofthecalibratedspring.TherearethreebasicspringtorqueseriesofferedbyBrookfield:Spring Torque

BrookfieldEngineeringLabs.,Inc.Page7ManualNo.M/02-215II.GETTINGSTARTEDThissectionexplainshowtousetheYR-1Rheometerinstandalonemode.TherearenotestprogramsstoredininstrumentmemorywhentheYR-1isshippedfromBrookfield.Therefore,youwillneedtoreviewSectionIIIontheEZ-YieldSoftwarewhichexplainshowtocreatetestprograms.OnceatestprogramhasbeendownloadedfromyourPCtotheYR-1,youwillbeabletoruntestsbyfollowingtheinstructionsinthissection.II.1AutozeroBeforeanydatamaybetaken,therheometermustbeAuto-zeroed.Thisactionisperformedeachtimetheinstrumentispoweredon.Thedisplayontherheometerwillguideyouthroughtheprocedureasfollows:Set the power switch (located on the rear panel) to the ON position (press the 1 on the power

switch) and allow to warm up for 10 minutes.

After applying power to the unit, the display will read:
