Carton components
Carton components may vary from one country to another.
Save all packing materials and the carton in case for any reason you must ship your machine.
An interface cable is not a standard accessory. Buy the proper interface cable for the interface you want to use
(USB or network).
USB cable
Please make sure you use a USB 2.0 cable that is no longer than 6 feet long (2 meters).
Your MFC has a USB 2.0 Full-Speed interface. This interface is compatible with Hi-Speed USB 2.0; however,
the maximum data transfer rate will be 12 Mbits/s. The MFC can also be connected to a computer that has a
USB 1.1 interface.
DO NOT connect the interface cable at this time.
Connecting the interface cable is done during the software installation process.
When you use a USB cable, make sure you connect it to the USB port of your computer and not to a USB port
on a keyboard or a non-powered USB hub.
Network cable
Use a straight-through Category5 (or greater) twisted-pair cable for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet

1 Removing the protective
parts
1Remove the protective tape and scanner glass
protection sheet.
Improper Setup
DO NOT connect the USB cable. Connecting
the USB cable is done during the software
installation process.
2 Installing the handset
1Connect the curled handset cord to the
handset.
3 Loading paper
You can load up to 100 sheets of 20 lb
(80 g/m2) paper.
For details, see About paper in Chapter 1 of
the User’s Guide.
1Pull the paper tray completely out of the
machine and remove the output paper tray (1).
2Press and slide the paper guide (1) to fit the
paper width.
3Pull out the paper support (1) and unfold the
paper support flap (2).
Note
Use the paper support flap for Letter, Legal and A4
paper.

4Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams
and misfeeds.
5Gently put the paper into the paper tray print
side down and top edge first.
Check that the paper is flat in the tray and
below the maximum paper mark (1).
Note
• Make sure the paper side guides touch the sides
of the paper.
• Be careful that you do not push the paper in too
far; it may lift at the back of the tray and cause
paper feed problems.
6Put the output paper tray back on and push the
paper tray firmly back into the machine.
4 Installing the phone line and
power cord
1Connect the power cord.
2Connect the telephone line cord. Connect one
end of the telephone line cord to the jack on the
machine marked LINE and the other end to a
modular wall jack.
Improper Setup
DO NOT connect the USB cable. Connecting
the USB cable is done during the software
installation process.
Note
If you are sharing one phone line with an external
telephone, connect it as shown below.

5 Installing the ink cartridges
Warning
If ink gets in your eyes, wash them out with water
at once, and if irritation occurs consult a doctor.
1Make sure that the power is turned on.
The LCD shows:
No Cartridge
Open scanner cover...
2Lift the scanner cover (1) from the right-hand
side of the machine until it locks securely into
the open position.
3Remove the yellow protective parts (1).
Note
Do not throw away the yellow protective parts. You
will need them if you transport the machine.
4Take out the ink cartridge.
5Carefully remove the protective yellow cap (1).
Improper Setup
DO NOT touch the area shown in the
illustration below.
Note
If the protective yellow cap comes off when you
open the bag, the cartridge will not be damaged.
Keep the ink cartridge in an upright position
when you put it into the slot.

6Press firmly down on the ink cartridge until the
hook snaps over it, taking care to match the slot
color (1) with the cartridge color (2), as shown
in the diagram below.
7Lift the scanner cover to release the lock.
Gently push the scanner cover support down
and close the scanner cover.
Note
If the LCD shows Install xxxx after you install
the ink cartridges, check that the ink cartridges are
installed properly.
The machine will clean the ink tube system for
use for the first time. This process will occur
only once, the first time ink cartridges are
installed. The cleaning process will last
approximately four minutes.

Caution
• DO NOT take out ink cartridges if you do not
need to replace them. If you do so, it may
reduce the ink quantity and the machine will
not know the quantity of ink left in the
cartridge.
• DO NOT shake the ink cartridges. If ink stains
your skin or clothing, wash with soap or
detergent at once.
• DO NOT repeatedly insert and remove the
cartridges. If you do so, ink may seep out of the
cartridge.
• If you mix the colors by installing an ink
cartridge in the wrong position, clean the print
head several times after correcting the
cartridge installation. (See Cleaning the print
head in Chapter 13 of the User’s Guide.)
• Once you open an ink cartridge, install it in the
machine and use it up within six months of
installation. Use unopened ink cartridges by
the expiration date written on the cartridge
package.
• DO NOT dismantle or tamper with the ink
cartridge, this can cause the ink to leak out of
the cartridge.
• Brother strongly recommends that you do not
refill the ink cartridges provided with your
machine. We also strongly recommend that
you continue to use only Genuine Brother
Brand replacement ink cartridges. Using or
attempting to use potentially incompatible
inks and/or cartridges in your machine may
cause damage to the machine itself and/or it
may result in unsatisfactory print quality. Our
warranty coverage does not apply to any
problem that was caused by the use of
unauthorized third party ink and/or cartridges.
To protect your investment and guarantee
your print quality please continue to replace
consumed ink cartridges with only Genuine
Brother Branded Supplies.
6 Print quality check
1After the cleaning cycle is finished, the LCD
shows:

2Make sure the paper is loaded in the paper
tray.
Press Color Start.
The machine starts printing the Print Quality
Check Sheet (only during initial ink cartridge
installation).
3Check the quality of the four color blocks on the
sheet.
(black/ cyan/ yellow/ magenta)
Improper Setup
Avoid touching the printed surface of the
paper immediately after printing, the surface
may not be completely dry and may stain your
fingers.
4The LCD shows:

check.
If you can see missing short lines, press 2
(No) on the dial pad and go to step 6.

6The LCD asks you if the print quality is OK for
black and color. Press 1(Yes) or 2(No) on the
dial pad.

After pressing 1(Yes) or 2(No) for both black
and color, the LCD shows:

7Press 1(Yes), the machine will then start
cleaning the colors.
8After cleaning is finished, press Color Start.
The machine starts printing the Print Quality
Check Sheet again and goes back to step 3.
7 Setting the date and time
The machine displays the date and time, and prints it
on the fax you send.
1Press Menu/Set.
2Press 0.
3Press 2.
4Enter the last two digits of the year on the dial
pad, and then press Menu/Set.

5Enter the two digits for the month on the dial

8 Setting your station ID
You should store your name and fax number to be
printed on all fax pages that you send.
1Press Menu/Set.
2Press 0.
3Press 3.
4Enter your fax number (up to 20 digits) on the
dial pad, and then press Menu/Set.

key as the last character, press to move the
cursor to the right.

9 Choosing a Receive Mode
There are three possible receive modes: Fax Only,
Fax/Tel and Manual.

10 Setting up the Message
Center
You must record an outgoing message in order to use
the Message Center mode.
1Record the Message Center Outgoing
Message (MSG CTR OGM).
See Recording Message Center Outgoing
Message in Chapter 7 of the User’s Guide.
2Activate Message Center mode.
Press and hold until it lights and the LCD
shows:
If the Message Center Mode is on, it
overrides your Receive Mode setting. The
built-in digital Message Center answers
voice calls. If the call is a fax, you can receive
a fax automatically.
For details, see Message Center in Chapter
7 of the User’s Guide.
11 Choosing Your Language

You will receive a confirmation fax of your Product

Important
Make sure that you have finished the
instructions from Step 1 Setting Up the
Machine on page 4-11.
Note
• Please close any applications running before
installing MFL-Pro Suite.
• Make sure there are no media cards put into the
media drive of the machine.
1Unplug the machine from the AC outlet and
from your computer, if you already connected
an interface cable.
2Turn on your PC.
(For Windows®2000 Professional/XP, you
must be logged on with Administrator rights.)
3Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM
drive. If the model name screen appears,
choose your machine. If the language screen
appears, choose your language.
4The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click
Install MFL-Pro Suite.
Note
• If this window does not appear, use Windows®
Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the
root folder of the Brother CD-ROM.
•If you are using Windows®2000 Professional
and have not installed service pack 3 (SP3) or
greater:
To access the PhotoCapture Center™ features
from your computer you may have to install a
Windows®2000 update first.
The Windows®2000 update is included with the
MFL-Pro Suite installer.
To install the update, follow the steps below:
1ClickOK to start installation of the Windows®
updates.
2 When instructed, click OK to restart your
computer.
3 After the computer restarts, the installation of
MFL-Pro Suite will automatically continue.
If the installation does not continue automatically,
open the main menu again by ejecting and then
reinserting the CD-ROM disc or double-click the
setup.exe program from the root folder, and
continue from Step 4to install the MFL-Pro Suite.
5Choose Local Connection, and then click
Next. The installation continues.
6After reading and accepting the ScanSoft®
PaperPort®9.0SE License Agreement, click
Yes.

7The installation of PaperPort®9.0SE will
automatically start and is followed by the
installation of MFL-Pro Suite.
8When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software
License Agreement window appears, click Yes
if you agree to the Software License
Agreement.
9When this screen appears, go to the next step.
10 Open the scanner cover to its open position.
11 Connect the USB cable to the USB socket
marked with a symbol. You will find the
USB socket above and to the left of the ink
cartridge slots, as shown below.
12 Carefully route the USB cable through the
trench and out the back of the machine as
shown below.
Improper Setup
• DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on
a keyboard or a non-powered USB hub.
Brother recommends that you connect the
machine directly to your computer.
• Make sure that the cable does not restrict the
cover from closing, or an error may occur.
13 Lift the scanner cover to release the lock.
Gently push the scanner cover support down
and close the scanner cover.
14 Turn on the machine by plugging in the power
cord.
It will take a few seconds for the installation
screens to appear.
The installation of the Brother drivers will
automatically start. The installation screens
appear one after another. Please wait, it will
take a few seconds for all screens to
appear.
Improper Setup
DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during
this installation.

15 When the on-line Registration screen is
displayed, make your selection and follow the
on-screen instructions.
16 Click Finish to restart your computer.
(After restarting the computer, for Windows®
2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on
with Administrator rights.)
Note
After restarting the computer, the Installation
Diagnostics will run automatically. If the
installation is unsuccessful, the installation results
window will be shown. If the Diagnostics shows a
failure, please follow the on-screen instruction or
read on-line help and FAQ’s in Start/All Programs
/Brother/MFL-Pro Suite MFC-XXXX.
The MFL-Pro Suite (including Brother
Printer driver and Scanner driver) has
been installed and the installation is now
complete.

Important
Make sure that you have finished the
instructions from Step 1 Setting Up the
Machine on page 4-11.
1Unplug the machine from the AC outlet.
2Open the scanner cover to its open position.
3Insert the network cable to the LAN socket
marked with a symbol. You will find the
LAN socket above and to the left of the ink
cartridge slots, as shown below.
4Carefully route the network cable through the
trench and out the back of the machine.
Then, connect the cable to your network.
Improper Setup
Make sure that the cable does not restrict the
cover from closing, or an error may occur.
Note
In case of using both USB and LAN cables, route
both cables into the trench with one on top of the
other.
5Lift the scanner cover to release the lock.
Gently push the scanner cover support down
and close the scanner cover.
6Turn on the machine by plugging in the power
cord.
Improper Setup
If you have setup wireless networking on your
machine before and you setup the wired
network, you should check that the machine's
Network I/F setting is set to Wired LAN. The
wireless network interface will be inactive with
this setting.
Press Menu/Set, 5, 6, and then press aor bto
choose Wired LAN. Press Menu/Set and then
press 1 1.Yes to accept the change.
The machine will restart automatically.
7Turn on your computer. (For Windows®2000
Professional/XP, you must be logged on with
Administrator rights.) Close any applications
running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite.
Note
Before installation, if you are using personal
firewall software, disable it. Once you are sure that
you can print after the installation, restart your
personal firewall software.
8Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM
drive. If the model name screen appears,
choose your machine. If the language screen
appears, choose your language.

9The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click
Install MFL-Pro Suite.
Note
• If this window does not appear, use Windows®
Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the
root folder of the Brother CD-ROM.
• If you see the following screen, click OK to install
the Windows®updates. After the updates are
installed your PC may restart. Then the installation
will automatically continue.
If the installation does not continue automatically,
open the main menu again by ejecting then
reinserting the CD-ROM disc or double-click the
setup.exe program from the root folder, and
continue from Step 9to install the MFL-Pro Suite.
10 Choose Wired Network Connection, and
then click Next.
11 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft®
PaperPort®9.0SE License Agreement, click
Yes.
12 The installation of PaperPort®9.0SE will
automatically start and is followed by the
installation of MFL-Pro Suite.
13 When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software

Agreement.
14 The installation of the Brother drivers will
automatically start. The installation screens
appear one after another, please wait for a
while.
Improper Setup
DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during
this installation.
15 If the machine is configured for your network,
choose the machine from the list, and then click
Next.
Note
This window will not appear if there is only one
machine connected on the network, it will be
chosen automatically.
16 If the machine is not yet configured for use on
your network, the following screen appears.
Click OK.
The Configure IP Address window will
appear. Enter the proper IP address
information for your network by following the
on-screen instructions.
