Unpack the machine
WARNING
Plastic bags are used in the packing of your machine. Plastic bags are not toys. To avoid the danger
of suffocation, keep these bags away from babies and children and dispose of them correctly.
aRemove the protective tape and film covering the machine, and also from the LCD and the ink tank cover.

Connect the power cord
and telephone line
aConnect the power cord.
bLift the scanner cover until it locks securely into
the open position.
cConnect the telephone line cord.
Connect one end of the telephone line cord to
the jack marked LINE on the machine.
Carefully guide the telephone line cord into the
cable channel and out the back of the machine.
Connect the other end to a modular wall jack.
dLift the scanner cover to release the lock a.
Gently push the scanner cover support
down band close the scanner cover cusing
both hands.
CAUTION
Be careful not to pinch your fingers when the
scanner cover closes.
NOTE
DO NOT connect the USB cable yet (if you are
using a USB cable).
NOTE
• If you do not plan to use the fax feature on this
machine, go to step 3on page 3.
• To prolong the life of the print head, provide the
best ink economy and maintain print quality, we
do not recommend unplugging the machine
frequently and/or leaving the machine
unplugged for extended periods of time. Each
time you plug the machine in, it automatically
cleans the print head, which uses some of your
ink.
We recommend using to power down the
machine. Using allows minimal power to
the machine, resulting in periodic, but less
frequent, cleaning of the print head.
IMPORTANT
The telephone line cord MUST be connected to
the jack marked LINE on the machine.

Fill the ink tanks
CAUTION
If ink gets in your eyes, wash it out with water at
once and call a doctor if you are concerned.
aMake sure that the power is turned on.
bOpen the ink tank cover a.
cLift the cap of the ink tank for the color you want
to fill.
dUnpack the ink bottle.
eRemove the cap of the ink bottle, remove the
film from the ink bottle, and then replace the
cap.
fRemove the tip of the ink bottle.
gMake sure that the color of the ink tank cap
matches the ink color you want to fill.
Insert the nozzle of the ink bottle firmly so that
the ink will not be spilled.
Fill the ink tank by gently squeezing the bottle
as shown.
IMPORTANT
DO NOT shake the ink bottles. If ink stains your
skin or clothing, wash with soap or detergent at
once.
NOTE
Make sure you use the Starter Ink Bottles
included with your machine first.
NOTE
Be careful not to touch any ink when you handle
the cap of the ink tank.

IMPORTANT
Replace the ink bottle cap tightly. Otherwise ink
may leak.
NOTE
• Be careful not to spill any ink when you fill the
ink tank.
• Empty the entire bottle into the ink tank.

hPoint the nozzle upward so that the ink will not
be spilled, and then remove the nozzle from the
ink tank.
iPush down on the cap of the ink tank to close it
tightly.
jRepeat steps cto ifor the three other ink
tanks.
kClose the ink tank cover.
IMPORTANT
• DO NOT tip the product after the ink tanks are
filled. Doing so may cause ink spillage and
internal damage to the product.
• Brother strongly recommends that you
continue using Genuine Brother Brand
replacement ink. Use or attempted use of
potentially incompatible ink in the Brother
machine may cause damage to the machine
and/or may result in unsatisfactory print quality.
Our warranty coverage does not apply to any
problem that is caused by the use of
unauthorized third party ink. To protect your
investment and obtain premium performance
from the Brother machine, we strongly
recommend the use of Genuine Brother
Supplies.
NOTE
The machine will prepare the ink tube system for
printing. This process will take approximately
seven minutes. Do not turn off the machine. We
recommend you perform the next step while
waiting.

Load plain Letter/A4
paper
aPull the paper tray completely out of the
machine.
bOpen the output paper tray cover.
cGently press and slide the paper width
guides aand then the paper length guide bto
fit the paper size.
Make sure that the triangular marks con the
paper width guides aand paper length
guide bline up with the marks for the paper
size you are using.
dFan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams
and misfeeds.
eGently put the paper into the paper tray print
side down and top edge first. Check that the
paper is flat in the tray.
NOTE
Make sure the first printed page is Letter/A4 size.
NOTE
Always make sure that the paper is not curled or
wrinkled.

IMPORTANT
Be careful that you do not push the paper in too
far; it may lift at the back of the tray and cause
paper feed problems.
NOTE
When you use Legal size paper, press and hold
the universal guide release button aas you slide
out the front of the paper tray.

fGently adjust the paper width guides to the
paper with both hands. Make sure that the
paper width guides touch the edges of the
paper.
gClose the output paper tray cover.
hSlowly push the paper tray completely into the
machine.
iWhile holding the paper tray in place, pull out
the paper support until it clicks, and then unfold
the paper support flap.

Check the print quality
aWhen the preparation process has finished, the
LCD shows this message

Press Inicio Color (Color Start).
bCheck the quality of the four color blocks on the
sheet (black/yellow/cyan/magenta).
cIf all lines are clear and visible, press 1(Sí
(Yes)) to finish the quality check and go to the
next step.
If lines are missing, press 2(No) and follow the
steps on the LCD.

Set the date and time
The LCD displays the date and time. You can also
add the current date and time to each fax you send by
setting your Station ID (see step 10).

Wireless setup
(if needed)
The ¿Config. Wi-Fi? (Setup Wi-Fi?) message
appears on the LCD.
For wireless setup using a mobile device, go to a.

Go to step 16 on page 17 to continue with the
wireless setup.

Choose the correct Receive Mode
The correct Receive Mode is determined by the external devices and telephone subscriber services (Voice Mail,
Distinctive Ring, etc.) you have (or will be using) on the same line as the Brother machine.
For more information, see Using Receive Modes in chapter 5 of the Basic User’s Guide.
If you are not using this machine for faxing, go to the next step.
aPress Menú (Menu), 3, 1, 1.

Will you be using a Distinctive Ring number for receiving faxes?
Brother uses the term “Distinctive Ring” but telephone companies may have other names for this service such
as Custom Ringing, RingMaster, Personalized Ring, Teen Ring, Ident-A-Call, and Smart Ring. See Distinctive
Ring in chapter 6 of the Basic User’s Guide for instructions on setting up your machine using this feature.
Will you be using Voice Mail on the same telephone line as your Brother machine?
If you have Voice Mail on the same telephone line as your Brother machine, there is a strong possibility that
Voice Mail and the Brother machine will conflict with each other when receiving incoming calls. See Voice Mail
in chapter 6 of the Basic User’s Guide for instructions on setting up your machine using this service.
Will you be using a Telephone Answering Device on the same telephone line as your Brother machine?
Your external telephone answering device (TAD) will automatically answer every call. Voice messages are
stored on the external TAD and fax messages are printed. Choose External TAD as your Receive Mode. See
the instructions below. For additional details, see Connecting an external TAD (telephone answering device) in
chapter 6 of the Basic User’s Guide.
Will you be using your Brother machine on a dedicated fax line?
Your machine automatically answers every call as a fax. Choose Fax Only as your Receive Mode. See the
instructions below.
Will you be using your Brother machine on the same line as your telephone?
Do you want to receive voice calls and faxes automatically?
The Fax/Tel receive mode is used when sharing the Brother machine and your telephone on the same
line. Choose Fax/Tel as your Receive Mode. See the instructions below. For additional information see
Fax/Tel in chapter 5 of the Basic User’s Guide for instructions on setting up and using this receive mode.
Important Note: You cannot receive voice messages on either Voice Mail or an answering machine
when choosing the Fax/Tel mode.
Do you expect to receive very few faxes?
Choose Manual as your Receive Mode. You control the phone line and must answer every call yourself.
See the instructions below.
NOTE
If the Receive Mode option is not displayed, make sure the Distinctive Ring feature is set to Off. (See Turning
off Distinctive Ring in chapter 6 of the Basic User’s Guide.)

Set your Station ID
Set your machine’s Station ID so that the date and
time appear on each fax you send.
If you are not using this machine for faxing, go to the
next step.
aPress Menú (Menu), 0, 2.
2.Station ID
bEnter your fax number (up to 20 digits) on the
dial pad, and then press OK.
cEnter your name (up to 20 characters) using
the dial pad, and then press OK.
dPress Detener/Salir (Stop/Exit).

Transmission
Verification Report
Your Brother machine is equipped with a
Transmission Verification Report that can be used as
confirmation that you sent a fax. This report lists the
name or fax number of the receiving party, the date,
time, and duration of the transmission, the number of
pages transmitted, and whether or not the
transmission was successful. If you want to use the
Fax Transmission Report feature, see Transmission
Verification Report in chapter 4 of the Basic User’s
Guide.
NOTE
• See the following chart for entering your name.
• To enter a space in a fax number, press conce
between numbers. To enter a space in a name,
press ctwice between characters.
• If you need to enter a character that is on the
same key as the character before, press cto
move the cursor to the right.
• If you entered a character incorrectly and want
to change it, press dor cto move the cursor to
the incorrect character, and then press Borrar
(Clear).

Set Tone or Pulse dialing
mode
Your machine comes set for a Tone dialing service. If
you have a Pulse dialing (rotary) service, you need to
change the dialing mode.
aPress Menú (Menu), 0, 3.

Set the telephone line
compatibility (VoIP)
If you are connecting the machine to a VoIP service
(over the Internet), you need to change the
compatibility setting.
aPress Menú (Menu), 0, 5.

Automatic Daylight
Saving Time
(Mexico only)
You can set the machine to change automatically for
Daylight Saving Time. It will reset itself forward one
hour in the spring and backward one hour in the fall.
aPress Menú (Menu), 0, 1, 2.

bPress aor bto choose On (or Off).
Press OK.
cPress Detener/Salir (Stop/Exit).
(For Latin American countries)
You can set the clock of the machine forward or
backward an hour.

bPress aor bto choose To Summer Time or
To Winter Time.

If you are using an analog telephone line, you can

Make sure your machine is connected to the power
and your computer is ON. You must be logged on with
Administrator rights.

Install MFL-Pro Suite
aPut the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If
the model name screen appears, choose your
machine. If the language screen appears,
choose your language.
bClick Install MFL-Pro Suite and click Yes if
you accept the license agreements.
cChoose Local Connection (USB), and then
click Next.
dFollow the on-screen instructions until the Plug
in the USB cable screen appears.

Finish and restart
aClick Finish to restart your computer.
After restarting the computer, you must log on
with Administrator rights.
bThe following screens will appear.
• When the Software Update Setting screen
appears, choose the software update setting
you want and click OK.
• When the Brother Product Research and
Support Program screen appears, select
your preference and follow the on-screen
instructions.

NOTE
If an error message appears during the software
installation, double-click (Brother Utilities)
on the desktop, and then click the drop-down list
and select your model name (if not already
selected). Click Tools in the left navigation bar,
and then click Installation Diagnostics.

update and the Brother Product Research and
Support Program.
• When you install MFL-Pro Suite, Brother Help
will also be installed automatically. Brother
Help allows you to access the Brother
Solutions Center when you double-click in

Before you begin

Choose your wireless setup method
The following instructions will offer three methods for setting up your Brother machine on a wireless network. If
you began the wireless setup from step 7on page 7, go to method bor c. For all other users, choose the method
you prefer for your environment.
Method ais the recommended way to connect (Windows®or Macintosh).
NOTE
If you have previously configured the wireless settings of the machine, you must reset the network settings
before you can configure the wireless settings again.
On your machine, press Menú (Menu).
Press 5to choose 5.Network.
Press 0to choose 0.Network Reset.
Press 1twice to accept the change.
NOTE
To set up your machine in Ad-hoc mode (connected to a wireless-capable computer without an access
point/router), see instructions in the Software and Network User’s Guide.

aSetup using the CD-ROM (Windows®and Macintosh)
• We recommend using a computer wirelessly connected to your network for this method.

If your wireless access point/router does not support WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup™) or AOSS™,
write down the wireless network settings of your wireless access point/router in the area below.
If you need assistance during setup and want to contact Brother Customer Service, make sure
you have your SSID (Network Name) and Network Key ready. We cannot assist you in locating
this information.

3) If you do not know the security information, please consult the router manufacturer, your system
administrator, or your Internet provider.

aPut the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If
the model name screen appears, choose your
machine. If the language screen appears,
choose your language.
bClick Install MFL-Pro Suite and click Yes if
you accept the license agreements.
cChoose Wireless Network Connection, and
then click Next.
dWhen the Firewall/AntiVirus detected screen
appears, choose Change the Firewall port
settings to enable network connection and
continue with the installation.
(Recommended), and then click Next.
If you are not using the Windows®Firewall, see
the instructions provided with your firewall
software for information on how to add the
following network ports.
For network scanning, add UDP port 54925.
For network PC-Fax receiving, add UDP port
54926.
If you still have trouble with your network
connection, add UDP ports 137 and 161.
eFollow the on-screen instructions to set up the
Brother machine.
fYour machine will now try to connect to your
wireless network. It may take a few minutes.
Wireless setup is now complete.

Download the latest software at

Double-click Start Here OSX. Select Wireless
installation and follow the Wireless Device
Setup instructions on your computer screen.
NOTE
If the Brother screen does not appear

Double-click the CD-ROM icon, and then

Wizard and press OK, and then go to c.
All other users go to b.
bOn your machine, press Menú (Menu).
Press 5to choose 5.Network.
Press 3to choose 3.Setup Wizard.
cWhen WLAN Enable? is displayed, press 1
(Yes) to accept.
This will start the wireless setup wizard.
To cancel, press Detener/Salir (Stop/Exit).
dThe machine will search for available SSIDs. It
will take several seconds to display a list of
available SSIDs.
If a list of SSIDs is displayed, press aor bto
choose the SSID you wrote down in step 17-b
on page 18. Press OK.
If the machine asks you to enter a Network
Key, go to e.
Otherwise, go to f.
eEnter the Network Key you wrote down in
step 17-b on page 18 using the dial pad to
choose each letter or number.
Press OK when you have entered all the
characters, then press 1(Yes) to apply your
settings.
fYour machine will now try to connect to your
wireless network. It may take a few minutes.
When Press OK Key appears on the LCD,
press OK.
Wireless setup is now complete.
To install MFL-Pro Suite, continue to
step 19.
For Windows®users:

NOTE
• If the list is blank, check that the wireless
access point/router has power and is
broadcasting the SSID. Move your machine
closer to the wireless access point/router and
try starting from bagain.
• If your access point is set to not broadcast the
SSID, you will have to manually add the SSID
name. For more information, see the Software
and Network User’s Guide.
NOTE
The letters appear in this order: lower case, upper
case and then numbers. To move the cursor left
or right, press dor c.

For mobile device users:
• Connect your mobile device to a wireless
access point/router using a Wi-Fi®connection.
• Download and install Brother iPrint&Scan
(Android™/iOS/Windows®Phone) from your
mobile device’s application download site.

application you are using (Brother
iPrint&Scan), visit the Brother Solutions Center
at http://support.brother.com and click Manuals
on your model’s page.
• If you began the setup from step 7on page 7,
go back to step 8to continue the machine
settings.
