andparamotorusewithtworisersetsavailable–oneforfree-ightandoneforpoweredight.

Brake Line Adjustments for PPG
WhenusingthePPGrisers,thebrakelinelengthsshouldbeadjustedtosuitthehangpoints(high,lowortrike).
Modications
WhenusingthePPGriser-set,onlythebrakelinelengthsshouldbeadjusted.Nootherchangesormodications
shouldbeperformedwithoutrstconsultingyourBGDdealer,astheymayinvalidatethewarrantyorcertication.

1. Selectasuitabletake-offareadeterminedbywindandterrain,clearofanyobstaclesthatmaycatchinthe
linesordamagethecanopy.
2. Unrollthecanopywiththebottomsurfacefacingupwards,theopeningsatthedownwindendofthetake-off
area,andtheharnessatthetrailingedgeattheupwindside.
3. Unrollthecanopytoeachsidesothattheleadingedgeopeningsformasemicircularshape,withthetrailing
edgedrawntogetheratthecentreofthearc.Theharnessshouldbedrawnawayfromthecanopyuntilthe
suspensionlinesarejusttight.
4. Prepareandcheckyourparamotoraccordingtothemanufacturer’sinstructions.
5. Connectthewingtotheparamotor(ortothetandemspreaders),makingsuretherearenotwistsinthe
risers,andthatthemaillonsorkarabinersarecorrectlyclosed.

4. Pre-ight Inspection
Yourparagliderisdesignedtobeassimpleaspossibletoinspectandmaintainbutathoroughpre-ightprocedureis
mandatoryonallaircraft.Thefollowingpre-ightinspectionprocedureshouldbecarriedoutbeforeeachight.
1. Whilstopeningouttheparagliderchecktheoutsideofthecanopyforanytearswhereitmayhavebeen
caughtonasharpobjectorevenhavebeendamagedwhilstinitsbag.
2. Checkthatthelinesarenottwistedorknotted.Dividethesuspensionlinesintosixgroups,eachgroup
comingfromoneriser.Bystartingfromtheharnessandrunningtowardsthecanopyremoveanytanglesor
twistsinthelines.Partiallyinatingthecanopyinthewindwillhelptosortoutthelines.
3. Itisparticularlyimportantthatthebrakesareclearandfreetomove.Checktheknotwhichattachesthe
brakehandlestothebrakelines.Bothbrakesshouldbethesamelengthandthiscanbecheckedbyaskingan
assistanttoholdtheupperendofthebrakelinestogetherwhilstthepilotholdsthebrakehandles.Thebrake
linesshouldbejustslackwiththewinginatedwhenthebrakesarenotapplied.Aftercheckingthebrake
lineslaythemontheground.
4. Alwayschecktherisermaillonsandtheattachmentpointstotheparamotorframeorbuggy.Itisstrongly
recommendedtouseasafetystrap.
5. Beforegettingintotheharnessyoushoulebewearingagoodcrashhelmet.Putontheharnessensuringall
thebucklesaresecureandproperlyadjustedforcomfort.
6. Checkthatthetrimmersareclosedandmaillonsatthesameheight–thepositionrecommendedfortake-off.

WARNING
Takecaretoprotectyourselfandotherpeoplefromthepropeller.Alwaysstartyourmotorupatasafedistancefrom

5. Flight Characteristics
Thismanualisnotintendedasaninstructionbook.Youshouldbeaqualiedpilotorundersuitablesupervision,but
thefollowingcommentsdescribehowtogetthebestfromyourparaglider.
Weight range
Eachsizeofparaglidercertiedforacertainweightrange.Theweightreferstothe‘overalltake-offweight’.
The‘In-ightweightrangeforfree-ight’istheweightofthepilot,paraglider,harnessandotherequipmentcarried
whenfree-ying.TheparagliderisEN/LTFcertiedforthisweightrange.
The‘extendedweightrangeforPPG’allowsforalloftheabove,plustheparamotorandafulltankoffuel.Itisthe
weightrangeapprovedbyDGACforyingunderpower.
Werecommendtoyinthemiddleoftheweightrange.
Ifyouyinthelowerhalfoftheweightrange,theturningagilitydecreasesandthegliderwillbemoredamped.In
strongturbulencethewingwillhaveaslightlyincreasedtendencytodeformandtocollapsethanwithahigherwing
loading.Onlyylightlyloadedifyouyinaerologicallystableconditions,suchasinthemorningorevening.
Ifyouyintheupperhalfoftheweightrange,agilityandstabilityinturbulencewillincrease,andspeedwillincrease
slightly.Theself-dampingwilldecreaseinturns,aswellasaftercollapses.
Take-off
Yourwingiseasytoinateinlightorstrongerwindsandwillquicklyriseoverheadtotheyingposition.Thebest

inationtechniqueistoholdoneA-riserineachhand.Theeasiesttake-offisusuallyobtainedwiththetrimmersfully
closed,maillonslevel.Werecommendthetrimmersarepartiallyreleasedforlaunchinginstrong-wind(morethan
10km/h)conditions.
Nevertrytolaunchifthewingisnotfullyinatedandaboveyourhead,andifyoudonothavefullcontrolofpitch
and/orroll.
Initial climb
Onceintheair,youshouldcontinuetofaceintothewindwhileyougainaltitude.Leavethetrimmersinthetake-off
(closed)positiontoattainthebestclimbrate.Donotattempttoincreaseyourclimbratebybraking,asusingthe
brakescombinedwiththeengine’sthrustcanincreasetheangleofattacktothepointwherethewingcanstall.In
addition,thishighangleofattackcanresultinabigdiveifthemotorsuddenlydies,whichcouldbedangerousifyou
areneartheground.
Donotinitiateaturnuntilyouhavesufcientheightandspeedtodoso.Incertaincircumstances,apilotcaninduce
unintendedoscillations.Thiscanbeduetoacombinationoftheengine/propellerandpilot’sweightshiftand/or
actiononthebrakes.Tostoptheseoscillationsyoushouldreducethepower,ensurethatyouareseatedcentrally
andnotaccidentallyapplyingweightshift,andthatyouarenotactingonthebrakes.Oncetheoscillationshave
stabilisedyoucangentlyreapplypower.
Straight ight and trimmers
Aftertake-off,onceyouhavegainedasafealtitude,ifyouwanttoincreaseyourspeedyoucanopenupthetrimmers
completely,keepingyourhandsup.
Toreducefuelconsumptionortoyinthermals,thetrimmersshouldbeclosed,pulleddowntotheirmaximum.
Itisimportanttoregularlycheckthewearonthetrimmersandthatthesystemisfunctioningcleanlywithnosticking

points.Iftheyareshowingsignsofwear,thetrimmersshouldbereplacedbythepilot.
Youshouldneveryaparamotorinstrongturbulenceorviolentwinds.
Turning
Therstturnsshouldbegradualandprogressive.Therstactiontochangedirectionshouldbethemovementofyour
weightintheharnesstowardsthesideoftheintendedturn.Thengentlyrelaxthepressureontheouterbrake,and
gentlyapplypressuretotheinnerbrakeuntilyouattainthedesiredbankangle.Toadjustyourspeedandturning-circle
size,coordinateyourweightshiftwithpressureontheouterbrake.
Rememberthattoviolentlyapplypressureonthebrakesisdangerousandshouldbeavoided.Neverinitiateaturnif
youareyingslowly,asyouriskthegliderenteringaspin.
Landing
Setthetrimmerstotheclosedposition(maillonsaligned)andsetupyourapproachdownwindofthelandingeld.
Whenyourheightabovetheeldisaround40m,slowthemotordownandglideinthedirectionofyourintended
landingpoint.Ifyouaresuretobeabletoreachyourlandingplace,youshouldswitchtheengineoff*.Ifnot,power
up,gainsomeheightandmakeyourapproachagain.
Whenyouareonyournalapproachwithyourengineoff,maintainyourspeed(handsup)tokeepplentyofenergy
inthewinguntilyouareabout1-2metresabovetheground.Flare,brakingslowlyandgraduallytoslowdownthe
winguntilyouareclosetothestall-pointandabletolandonyourfeet.
*Ifyoulandwiththeenginerunningthereisaconsiderableriskofrotationalpropellerdamage,(linespassingthrough
thepropeller,oreveninjury)

Active Piloting
‘Activepiloting’isatoolthatwillhelpyouywithgreatersafetyandenjoyment.Itmeansyinginempathywithyour
paraglider,notonlyguidingitthroughtheairbutalsobeingawareoffeedbackfromthewing,especiallyinthermals
andturbulence.Iftheairissmooththefeedbackcanbeminimalbutinturbulencefeedbackiscontinuousandneeds
tobeconstantlyassessedbythepilot.Suchreactionsbecomeinstinctiveingoodpilots.
Rapid Descent Techniques
Big Ears
The‘babyA-riser’allowsthewingtipsoftheparaglidertobefoldedinsimplyandeasilytoincreaseitssinkrate.
Thisbigearfacilitydoesnotmeanyoushouldyinstrongerwinds,butallowsyoutodescendquicklywithout
substantiallyreducingtheforwardspeedofthecanopy(B-liningsubstantiallyreducesthecanopy’sforward
speed).Toengagebigears,leanforwardintheharnessandgraspthebabyA-risers(oneineachhand)atthe
maillons,keepingholdofbothbrakehandlesifpossible.Pulltherisersoutanddownatleast30cmsoasto
collapsethetipsoftheglider.ItisveryimportantthattheotherA-linesarenotaffectedwhenyoudothis,asthis
couldcausetheleadingedgetocollapse.Steeringispossiblebyweightshiftingwithbigearsin.Ifthebigearsdo
notcomeoutquicklyontheirown,agentlepumponthebrakeswillspeedthingsup.
Beforeusingthebigearsfacilityinearnestitisessentialtopractisebeforehandwithplentyofgroundclearancein
casealeadingedgecollapseoccurs.Alwayskeepholdofbothbrakesinordertoretaincontrol.Puttingyourhands
throughthebrakehandlessotheyremainonyourwristsisagoodmethodofdoingthis.
B-Line Stall
Thisfastdescentmethodisausefulemergencyprocedure.Withbothhandsthroughthebrakehandles,takehold
ofthetopoftheB-risers,oneineachhand,andpullthemdownbyaround50cm.Thiswillstallthecanopyand
forwardspeedwilldroptozero.Makesureyouhaveplentyofgroundclearancebecausethedescentratecanbe
over10m/sec.ToincreasethedescentratepullharderontheB-risers.WhenyoureleasetheB-risersthecanopywill

automaticallystartyingagain,normallywithintwoseconds.Sometimesthecanopywillturngentlywhenitexits
fromtheB-linestall.ItisnormallybettertoreleasetheB-risersfairlyquicklyratherthanslowly,asdoingsoslowly
mayresultinthecanopyenteringdeepstall.Alwaysreleasetheriserssymmetrically,asanasymmetricreleasefroma
B-linestallmayresultinthegliderenteringaspin.
Thismanoeuvreisusefulifyouneedtolosealotofheightquickly,perhapswhenescapingfromathunderstorm.It
shouldnotbeperformedwithlessthan100mofgroundclearance.
Spiral Dive
Anormalturncanbeconvertedintoastrongspiraldivebycontinuingtoapplyonebrake.Thebankangleandspeed
oftheturnwillincreaseasthedownwardspiraliscontinued.Becarefultoenterthespiralgraduallyastooquicka
brakeapplicationcancauseaspinoranover-the-nosespiral.
BGDglidersaredesignedandtestedtorecoverfromnormalspiralswithadescentrateinferiorto16m/s,
automaticallywithoutpilotinput.Ifthepilotincreasesthedescentrateofthespiraltoover16m/sorinitiateswhatis
knownasanover-the-nosespiral,theglidermayrequirepilotinputtorecover.Inthiscaseallthepilotneedstodois
toapplysomeoutsidebrakeandsteertheglideroutoftheturn.
Theover-the-nosespiralisaspecialtypeofspiraldivewherethegliderpointsalmostdirectlyattheground.Itwill
enterthisifyoumakeasuddenbrakeapplicationduringthespiralentrysothattheglideryawsaround.Thenoseof
thegliderendsuppointingattheground,afterwhichitpicksupspeedveryquickly.Thistechniqueisverysimilarto
SATentrytechnique,andliketheSATitisanaerobaticmanoeuvre,whichisoutsidethenormalsafeightenvelope.
Pleasedonotpractisethesemanoeuvresastheycanbedangerous.Careshouldbetakenwhenexitingfromany
spiraldive.Topulloutofasteepspiraldive,releasetheappliedbrakegraduallyorapplyoppositebrakegradually.A
sharpreleaseofthebrakecancausetheglidertosurgeanddiveasthewingconvertsspeedtolift.Alwaysbeready
todampoutanypotentialdivewiththebrakes.Alsobereadytoencounterturbulencewhenyouexitfromaspiral
becauseyoumayythoughyourownwaketurbulence,whichcancauseacollapse.

CAUTION:Spiraldivescancauselossoforientation(black-out)andsometimeisneededtoexitthismanoeuvre.This
manoeuvremustbeexitedintimeandwithsufcientheight.
Accelerator (speed stirrup) and trimmers
ThePPGrisershavetrimmersandanacceleratorsystem,whichcanbeusedtoincreasethespeed.Thestandard
trimmersettingisfullyclosed(maillonslevel),whichistheslowestposition.
Werecommendyouyinconditionswhereyoucanpenetrateintowindwithouthavingtousetheacceleratororfully
openingthetrimmers,whichgivesyouasafetymarginofextraspeedshouldyouneedit.
Glidedeterioratesslightlyandthegliderisslightlymoresusceptibletocollapseswithtrimmersopenorthespeedbar
applied.Usingthespeedsystemcanaffectthepilot´sbalanceintheharnessanditmaybenecessarytomakesome
adjustmentstotheharness.
Toyatmaximumspeedthetrimmersshouldbereleasedandthespeedbarpushedprogressivelyuntilthepullies
touch.Donotgobeyondthispointbyusingexcessiveforcetoattempttomaketheglidergofasterasthismay
resultintheglidercollapsing.
IMPORTANT: We do not recommend pilots to y with full accelerator and trimmers fully open at the same time
Checkthespeedsystemandtrimmercomponentsregularlyforwearandtear,andensuretheyalwayswork
smoothly.
ENcerticationisonlyvalidwiththePPGriserswhenownwithinthe‘In-ightweightrangeforfreeight’,andwith
thetrimmerssettotheirfullyclosed(slow)position.
TheparagliderisDGACcertiedforthe‘extendedweightrangeforPPG’withthetrimmersinanyposition.

6.RecoveryTechniques
Stalls
Stallsaredangerousandshouldnotbepractisedinthecourseofnormalying.Stallsarecausedthroughying
tooslowly.Airspeedislostasbrakepressureincreasesandasthecanopyapproachesthestallpointitwillstartto
descendverticallyandnallybegintocollapse.Shouldthisoccuritisimportantthatthepilotreleasesthebrakes
atthecorrectmoment.Thebrakesshouldneverbereleasedwhenthewinghasfallenbehindthepilot;thebrakes
shouldbereleasedfairlyslowly,topreventtheforwarddiveofthecanopyfrombeingtoostrong.Apre-release
ofthebrakeandthereconstructionofthefullspanisrecommendedtoavoidthetipsgettingcravattedduring
therecovery.PilotsareadvisednevertoattemptthismanoeuvreunlessunderSIVinstruction.Thismanualisnot
intendedtogiveinstructioninthisoranyotherarea.
Deep Stall (or Parachutal Stall)
Yourparagliderhasbeendesignedsothatitwillnoteasilyremaininadeepstall.However,ifitisincorrectlyrigged
oritsyingcharacteristicshavebeenadverselyaffectedbysomeothercause,itispossiblethatitcouldenterthis
situation.Intheinterestsofsafetyallpilotsshouldbeawareofthisproblem,andknowhowtorecoverfromit.The
mostcommonwaytoenterdeepstallisfromayingtooslowly,fromaB-linestallorevenfrombigears.
Whenindeepstallthepilotwillnoticethefollowing:
1. Verylowairspeed.
2. Almost-verticaldescent(likearoundcanopy),typicallyaround5m/s.
3. Theparagliderappearsquitewellinatedbutdoesnothavefullinternalpressure.Itlooksandfeelsabitlimp.

6.RecoveryTechniques
Recoveryfromdeepstallisquitesimple:thenormalmethodistosimplyinitiateamildturn.Asthecanopystartstoturn
itwillautomaticallychangetonormalight,butitisveryimportantnottoturntoofastasthiscouldinduceaspin.
ThesecondmethodistopullgentlyontheA-risers.Thishelpstheairowtore-attachtotheleadingedge,butbe
carefulnottopulldowntoohardasthiswillinduceafrontcollapse.
Ifthedeepstallisparticularlystubbornandthepreviousmethodsdonotworkthenafullstallwillsolvetheproblem.
Todothisapplybothbrakesagainfairlyquickly,asiftodoastrongstall,thenimmediatelyreleasebothbrakesand
dampouttheforwardsurgeinthenormalway.Thecanopywillswingbehindyouthenautomaticallyreinateandsurge
forwardinfrontofyoubeforereturningtonormalight.Itisthesurgeforwardthatexitsthecanopyfromdeepstall.
Spins
Spinsaredangerousandshouldnotbepractisedinthecourseofnormalying.Spinsoccurwhenthepilottries
toturntoofast.Inaspinthepilot,linesandcanopybasicallystayverticalandrotatearoundaverticalaxis.Your
paragliderwillresistspinning,butifaspinisinadvertentlyinducedthepilotshouldreleasethebrakepressurebut
alwaysbereadytodampoutanydiveasthegliderexitsthespin.Ifthepilotdoesnotdampthediveonexitingthe
spintheglidermayhaveanasymmetricdeation.
Symmetric Front Collapse
Itispossiblethatturbulencecancausethefrontofthewingtosymmetricallycollapse,thoughactivepilotingcan
largelypreventthisfromoccurringaccidentally.ApilotcanreproducetheeffectbytakingholdofboththeA-risers
andpullingdownsharplyonthem.Thewingwillautomaticallyrecoveronitsownfromthissituationinaround3
seconds.Duringthisrecoveryperioditisadvisablenottoapplythebrakesasthiscouldstallthewing.
Asymmetric Front Collapse
Yourparagliderisveryresistanttodeations;howeverifthecanopycollapsesononesideduetoturbulence,the

pilotshouldrstofallcontrolthedirectionofightbycounteringontheoppositebrake.Mostnormalcollapseswill
immediatelyreinateontheirownandyouwillhardlyhavetimetoreactbeforethewingreinatesautomatically.
Theactofcontrollingthedirectionwilltendtoreinatethewing.However,withmorepersistentcollapsesitmay
benecessarytopumpthebrakeonthecollapsedwingusingalong,strong,smoothandrmaction.Normallyone
ortwopumpsofaround80cmwillbesufcient.Eachpumpshouldbeappliedinaboutonesecondandsmoothly
released.Inseverecasesitcanbemoreeffectivetopumpbothbrakestogethertogetthecanopytoreinate.Be
carefulnottostallthewingcompletelyifthistechniqueisused.
Releasing a trapped tip (cravat)
Itshouldbedifculttotrapthetipsothatitwillnotcomeoutquickly.However,followingaveryseveredeationany
canopycouldbecometiedupinitsownlines.Ifthisoccursthenrstofallusethestandardmethodofrecoveryfrom
atipdeationasdescribedinAsymmetricFrontCollapseabove.Ifthecanopystilldoesnotrecoverthenpulltherear
riserstohelpthecanopytoreinate.Pullingthestabilolineisalsoagoodwaytoremovecravats,butrememberto
controlyourightdirectionasyournumber-onepriority.Ifyouareverylowthenitismuchmoreimportanttosteer
thecanopyintoasafelandingplaceoreventhrowyourreserve.
NOTE:Testpilotshavetestedyourparagliderwellbeyondthenormalightenvelope,butsuchtestsarecarriedout
inaveryprecisemannerbytrainedtestpilotswithaback-upparachute,andoverwater.Stallsandspinsonany

Ifyouhavetopackyourcanopyawaywet,donotleaveitformorethanafewhoursinthatcondition.Assoonas
possibledryitoutoritcanbecomeaffectedbymould.Donotusedirectheatsourcestodrythecanopyasitis
inammable.Usingadehumidierisstronglyrecommendedifseveraldampglidersarestoredtogetherfrequently.
Alwaysstorethecanopyinadry,warmplace.Ideallythisshouldbeinthetemperaturerangeof5to25degreescentigrade.
Neverletyourcanopyfreeze,particularlyifitisdamp.
Thecanopyismadefromhighqualitynylon,whichistreatedagainstweakeningfromultravioletradiation.However
itisalwayswisetominimisetheexposuretoUVradiationasthisweakensthefabricofthecanopy,andlong
exposuretoharshsunlightcanseverelycompromisethesafetyofyourcanopy.Onceyouhavenishedying,put
yourcanopyaway.Donotleaveitlayinginstrongsunshineunnecessarily.Ifyouareconcernedaboutanyaspectof
theintegrityofyourparagliderpleasecontactyournearestBGDdealerortalktoBGDdirectly.
Neverdragorslidethetopsurfaceoftheglideroverconcreteorotherhardsurfaceasthiscancauseabrasion
damagetothesail.
Donottreatyourcanopywithchemicalcleanersorsolvents.Ifyoumustwashthefabric,usewarmwaterandalittle
soap.Ifyourcanopygetswetinseawater,washitwithwarmwaterandcarefullydryit.
Smalltearsinthetoporbottomsurface(notnormallytheribs)ofacanopycanberepairedwithapatchofself-
adhesiveripstopnylon.Tearsnolongerthan100mmcanberepairedinthiswayprovidingtheyarenotinahigh-
stressarea.IfyouhaveanydoubtabouttheairworthinessofyourcanopypleasecontactyourdealerorBGDdirectly.

Itisimportanttohaveyourgliderregularlyserviced.Itshouldhaveathoroughcheck/inspectionevery24monthsor
every150ighthours,whicheveroccursrst.Thischeckmustbemadebythemanufacturer,importer,distributoror
otherauthorisedpersons.Thecheckingmustbeprovenbyastamponthecerticationstickerontheglideraswellin
theservicebook.BGDwillofferaninspectionserviceeverywinter.Thisisacomprehensiveservicewhichchecksline
lengthsandstrength,fabricporosityandtearstrengthandavarietyofothertestsandwestronglyadviseallpilotsto
takeadvantageofthis.
Pleaseprintouttheservicepagesfromthismanual,llinthenumberofightsandhoursownintheServiceRecord,
andsendtogetherwithyourgliderwhenitgoesforinspectionorservicing.Themanufacturerwillonlyaccept
responsibilityforparagliderlinesandrepairswhichwehaveproducedandttedorrepairedourselves.
