IMPORTANT: Please read the following instructions before
operating the SolarPort 4.4 unit.
Important Notes
Always connect any external cables to the SolarPort 4.4 first and then the electronic device
being powered last, otherwise it may cause a short circuit. DO NOT attempt to recharge
NON-RECHANGEABLE alkaline batteries. When using the SolarPort 4.4 in a vehicle, make
sure the vehicle’s temperature is within the allowable specified range (see Specifications).
Accessories included:
Testing
Open the SolarPort 4.4 by pressing the latch on the front edge of the unit. Place in full sunlight
and test by pressing the button labeled “Test”. The green LED will light up indicating sufficient
sunlight is present, and your unit is working properly.
Positioning
Always select a location where your SolarPort 4.4 will get the maximum sunlight.
Tilt the SolarPort 4.4 towards the sun for best performance.
Selecting 6V or 12V
Select the 6V position when connecting to electronics requiring 6V or less or when using the
USB port. Select the 12V position when connecting to electronics requiring 12V, or when
using the 12V automotive power connector. Always check the electronic device specifications
before using the SolarPort 4.4.

Proper Adapter Connection
To connect either of the female adapters to the DC power cable, first observe the “TIP”
indication on the adapter. Most SolarPort 4.4 users in North America must match the
adapter to the power cable “TIP” to “+POS” if their electronic device displays the symbol:
The polarity symbol Is usually found next to the power output of the electronic device.
Conversely, most SolarPort 4.4 users in Europe must match adaptors to the power cable
“TIP” to “-NEG” if their electronic device displays this symbol:.
No charging will occur if the incorrect polarity is used.
Connecting an Electronic Device or Battery Charger
Use the 12V automotive power adapter cable or the USB cable supplied with your
device. When connecting the battery charger, use the cable in the SolarPort 4.4 hinge
with the 3.5mm X 1.3mm adapter (see Proper Adapter Connection section).
When using a cable supplied with your device, connect the cable to the SolarPort 4.4 first
and then the device last. If the device is not charging in the 6V position, switch to
the 12V position.
Multiple SolarPort 4.4 Connections
It is possible to double the charging power by plugging more than one SolarPort 4.4
together, using the cable stored in the hinge. Open the rubber cap and remove the plug
end of the cable. The other end of the cable is permanently attached to the SolarPort 4.4.
Plug the 5.5 X 2.5 mm adapter onto the cable, (see Proper Adapter Connection section).
Plug the cable into the 5.5 X 2.5mm power jack on the second SolarPort 4.4.
Cleaning Suggestions
Clean with a slightly damp cloth. Do not submerge in water.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can the SolarPort 4.4 drain my battery at night?
A: No. The SolarPort 4.4 has a built-in diode for reverse current protection.
Q: Can my SolarPort 4.4 be left outdoors without a protective covering?
A: Yes. However, the SolarPort 4.4 should be taken indoors in anticipation of
rain, snow, etc.
Q: The green light (LED) on the panel does not light up.
A: The green light (LED) indicates that your unit is receiving sufficient sunlight exposure.
If it is not lit, it may mean that you are not exposing the unit to enough sunlight.
Properly position the solar panel to maximize its exposure to the sun. If this does not
trigger the LED to work, it is possible that the LED is burnt out. The LED may have a
more limited life span than the panels. This in no way affects the performance
of the SolarPort 4.4.
Q: Can I charge more than one battery at a time with the SolarPort 4.4?
A: Yes. The charge can be applied to a bank of AA or AAA batteries. When attached to a
bank of 2 or more batteries, the total power input will be divided into that number of
batteries. The higher the number of batteries, the longer it will take to recharge
the battery bank.
A: No charging will occur. See the section on Proper Adapter Connection.
