DESCRIPTION
The BURNDY® MR 15-18-20 HYTOOLTM incorporates a full cycle ratchet mechanism that provides a
complete, positive crimp each time. Once started the ratchet mechanism does not allow the handles
to be opened until after the full ratcheting cycle is completed, unless the user actuates the emergency
release lever. This provides for a completed crimp before a connector can be removed from the tool.
OPERATION
1. Open the tool. Place the terminal into the correct die nest.
2. Partially close the tool until the terminal is held in place.
3. Insert the wire into the terminal.
4. Close the tool until the ratchet releases.
MAINTENANCE
The service life of a tool can be greatly improved with proper care and maintenance. To extend
the life of your BURNDY® MR mechanical crimp tool keep it clean and well lubricated. Inspect
the tool prior to, and after each use for dirt, grease, oil, oxide inhibitors (PenetroxTM), and other
foreign materials. Should any of these exist, clean the tool using a high quality solvent type
cleaner. After each cleaning, wipe the tool dry and lubricate with a high grade silicone spray.
SAFETY FIRST
The information provided in this manual is essential for the safe handling, operation,
and maintenance of BURNDY® hand tools. The operator must read, understand,
and follow these instructions and ALL safety warnings and labels before operating
this tool. Only use this tool in accordance with the manufacturer’s specications.
Other use of this tool may lead to serious personal injury or death.
Tools are NOT insulated for use on or near energized conductors. Use of these tools
near energized conductors may lead to electrical shock, causing severe injury or death. Do NOT use
these tools near energized conductors without adequately insulating operator and surroundings.
Pinch point hazard. Tool jaws move at high force and can cause severe personal injury. To avoid
personal injury, keep all body parts away from moving parts of the tool during
operation.
Use all appropriate personal safety equipment when handling, operating, and
servicing this tool, including but not limited to eye protection and gloves.
HOW TO ADJUST
It is sometimes necessary to adjust the crimp force.
1. Remove the allen key bolt from the eccentric axle.
2. Lift o the toothed lock washer.
3. Turn the axle in the proper direction to loosen or tighten tool adjustment. Maximum
tightness is accomplished when at surface of axle faces the locking tooth.
4. Replace lock washer and bolt.
5. Check preload against recommended handle force.
TOOL IDENTIFICATION
The MR15-18-20 have common tool frames with dierent die sets for each tool. To identify your tool,
look at the tip of the jaws for the individual catalog numbers shown on the individual die.
MRTOOLKIT:
If you purchased an MRTOOLKIT follow these instructions when changing dies. The nest portion of the
die set is always installed in the top xed side of the tool jaw with the catalog number facing outward.
The indentor portion is always installed on the bottom movable side of the tool jaw with the catalog
number facing out. To ensure proper die installation, look at the front angled edge of the die set and
make sure that the catalog numbers are visible.
