compatible electrical environment. Insertion and removal
of the module or cable(s) from the carrier board must not

GENERAL NOTICES
UNPACKING AND INSPECTION
This product contains components which are
susceptible to static discharge, and should be
handled with appropriate caution.
Upon receipt of this product, visually inspect the board for
missing, broken or damaged components and for physical
damage to the printed circuit board or connectors. This
product was shipped in perfect physical condition. Any
physical damage to the product is the responsibility of the
shipping carrier and should be reported to the carrier's
agent immediately.
RETURN OF GOODS
Before returning a product for repair, verify as well as
possible that the suspected unit is at fault. Then call BVM
Ltd. for a Customer Return (CR) number. Carefully
package the unit, in the original shipping carton if this is
available, and ship prepaid and insured, preferably by
courier, with the CR number written on the outside of the
package.
Include a return address and the telephone number of a
technical contact, and a detailed description of the
observed fault. For out-of-warranty repairs, a purchase
order for repair charges must accompany the return. BVM
Ltd. will not be responsible for damage due to improper
packaging of returned items. Out of warranty repairs can
be arranged, and will be charged on a material and labour
basis, subject to a minimum repair charge. Return
transportation and insurance will be charged as part of the
repair and is in addition to the minimum charge.

Any software that is provided as Copyright BVM Ltd. is
proprietary and confidential property of BVM Ltd., and
each single copy is given on the agreed understanding
that it is licensed for use on product combinations
supplied by BVM Ltd. or their appointed distributors only.
The software product may not be copied (except for
backup purposes), given away, rented, loaned,
reproduced, distributed or transmitted in any way or form,
in whole or in part, without written permission of BVM Ltd.
This applies to any merged, modified or derivative version
of the software including, but not limited to, versions
produced by customising, translating, reverse
engineering, de-compiling or disassembly.
This licence may be automatically terminated without

WARRANTY
A) BVM Ltd. warrants that the articles furnished hereunder
are free from defects in material and workmanship for one
year after the date of shipment.
B) All warranties and conditions, express and implied,
statutory and otherwise, as to the quality of the goods or
their fitness for any purpose are hereby excluded and with
the exception of liability for death or personal injury
caused by negligence as defined in the Unfair Contract
Terms Act 1977 the seller shall not be liable for any loss,
injury or damage arising directly or indirectly from the use,
application or storage of such goods.
C) Subclause (B) above shall not apply where the buyer
deals as a consumer as this expression is defined in the
Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977.
D) The liability of BVM Ltd. hereunder shall be limited to
repair or replacement at the manufacturers discretion of
any defective unit. Equipment or parts which have been
subject to abuse, misuse, accident, alteration, neglect,
unauthorised repair or installation are not covered by this
warranty. BVM Ltd. shall have the right of determination
as to the existence and cause of any defect.
E) The warranty period of the replacement or a repaired
product or part shall terminate with the termination of the
warranty period with respect to the original product or part
for all replacement parts supplied or repairs made during
the warranty period.
F) Although BVM Ltd. offer a high level of technical
support and advice, due to the complex nature and wide
application of product configurations it is the
responsibility of the purchaser to be satisfied at the time
of purchase that the products are suitable for the final
application.
G) The term 'Software' used herein is defined as 'any
program data or code in source or binary format recorded
in or on any readable device or media'.
H) BVM Ltd. will effect all reasonable effort to resolve
accepted reproducible software errors reported within 12
months of purchase. Acceptance of an error shall solely

1. Introduction

General Hardware Description.
This user manual does not provide:-
Detailed data on the operation of the serial controller or serial buffer devices.
Detailed data on the operation of the EEPROM.
Details on the content of the PMC specification.
Information is provided to allow the module to be integrated into a system and configured by the
system engineer. The User manual is intended for use by system integrators, service personnel,
software engineers and end users.
Unless otherwise stated, address information is in hexadecimal notation.
1.2 PMCSIO Series Part Numbers
The PMCSIO series is available in two different basic types, the PMCSIO4 which supports 4 serial
channels and the PMCSIO8 which supports 8 serial channels. The board is referred to generically as a
PMCSIO throughout this User's Manual. The PMCSIO is available in various build options, the more
popular ones are listed below. Please contact your supplier for details of other configurations.

3.2 OX16PCI954 Serial Controller
The PMCSIO uses an OX16PCI954 single chip PCI solution to offer serial expansion functions on a
PMC module. It is a dual function PCI device offering four ultra-high performance OX16C950 UART's,
and a local bus which is interfaced to the OX16C954 Local Bus Serial Controller.
Each channel in the OX16PCI954 offers data rates up to 15Mbps (realisable on the PMCSIO as
1Mbps on RS232 or 12.5Mbps on RS422/485) and 128 byte deep transmitter and receiver FIFO's.
Deep FIFO's reduce CPU overhead and allow utilisation of higher data rates.
Each channel is software compatible with the widely used industry-standard 16C550 devices and
compatibles as well as the OX16C95x family of high performance UART's. In addition to increased
performance and FIFO size, the UART's also provide the full set of OX16C95x enhanced features
including automated in-band flow control, readable FIFO levels etc. - see section "3.3 OX16C954
Serial Controller (page 5)".
The efficient 32-bit, 33MHz target-only PCI interface is compliant with version 2.2 of the PCI Bus
Specification and version 1.0 of PCI Power Management Specification.
For full flexibility, all the default register values can be overwritten using the EEPROM connected via
the Microwireserial interface. To enhance device driver efficiency and reduce interrupt latency,
internal UART's have multi-port features such as shadowed FIFO fill levels, a global interrupt source
register and Good-Data Status, readable in four adjacent DWORD registers visible to logical functions
in IO space and memory space.

3.3 OX16C954 Serial Controller
The PMCSIO uses an OX16C954 four-channel ultra-high performance UART connected via a local
bus to an OX16PCI954. This offers data rates up to 15Mbps (realisable on the PMCSIO as 1Mbps on
RS232 or 12.5Mbps on RS422/485) and 128 byte deep transmitter and receiver FIFO's. Deep FIFO's
reduce CPU overhead and allow utilisation of higher data rates.
It is software compatible with the widely used industry-standard 16C550 type devices and compatibles,
as well as other OX16C95x family devices. In addition to increased performance and FIFO size, the
OX16C954 also provides enhanced features including improved flow control. Automated software flow
control using Xon/Xoff and automated hardware flow control using CTS#/RTS# and DSR#/DTR# can
be used to prevent FIFO over-run. Flow control and interrupt thresholds are fully programmable and
readable, enabling programmers to fine-tune the performance of their system. FIFO levels are
readable to facilitate fast driver applications.
The addition of software reset enables recovery from unforeseen error condition allowing drivers to
restart gracefully.
The OX16C954 is ideally suited to industrial applications, such as high-speed multi-port functions that
enable users to take advantage of the maximum performance of analogue modems or ISDN terminal
adapters. It is also suitable for any equipment requiring high speed RS232/RS422/RS485 interfaces.
3.4 Serial Clocks
Two oscillators are provided: 1.8432MHz and 50MHz. When used at 1.8432MHz and the UART set to
16C550 mode (via configuration switch) the PMCSIO will behave like and octal 16C550 UART with
operation at all the standard PC baud rates up to 115kbps. This is designed be used in systems where
enhanced drivers are not available.
When used at 50MHz, with the UART's set to enhanced mode and used with the Oxford
Semiconductor drivers variable baud rates up to 12.5Mbps are available - see section "Appendix B -
Baud Rate Settings (page 17)" for further details.
3.5 Serial Buffers
MAX3245E buffer chips are used for the RS232 channels. These have the following properties:
–3 drivers and 5 receivers, one IC per channel.
–Maximum data rate of 1Mbps.
–Single 5V operation.
–±15kV ESD protected.
MAX1486 buffer chips are used for the RS422/485 channels. These have the following properties:
–1 driver and one receiver, two IC's per channel.
–Maximum data rate of 12.5Mbps.
–Single 5V operation.
–10 pin µMAX package.
–Selectable full/half duplex.

3.6 Buffer Control and Select
Control and select lines from the serial controller chips to the buffer chips are fed by via a PLD device
enabling polarity and control selection, as shown below in Figure 4.

3.7 EEPROM
The PMCSIO is fitted with 128bytes of EEPROM using a 93C46 device, which is supplied pre-
programmed by BVM.
The contents of the EEPROM are read by the OX16PCI954 on coming out of reset and are used to
set up the control registers after reset, allowing the following to be set:
•PCI interface configuration.
•PCI Subsystem and Subsystem Vendor ID.
•Various other configuration parameters.
See section "7.2 Configuration EEPROM (page 14)" and "A.1 OX16PCI954 PCI Quad UART (page
16)" for further details.

3.8 Power Management
The OX16PCI954 is PCI power management 1.0 compliant. In power saving mode the OX16PCI954
will consume 40mA (as opposed to 120mA). The OX16C954 has a power saving mode and will
consume 10mA (as opposed to 20mA).
The MAX4245E RS232 transceivers have an auto-shutdown mode where if there is no activity for 30
seconds they enter a low power state. Their supply current drops from 1mA to 1µA. The auto-
shutdown feature may be disabled, via a switch, if required.
3.8.1 PME Generation from RI
MIO2 on the OX16PCI954 can be programmed via either EEPROM or device driver to generate a
PME event when the RI signal is asserted by any channel. This feature is enabled/disabled by SW2 -
see section "5.3.5 SW2 (4) - PME Enable (page 10)".
The feature is not enabled in the PMCSIO EEPROM, as the Oxford Semiconductor drivers do not
currently support this function.
3.8.2 RS232 Power Control
The MIO pins can be used to control the power state of the RS232 transceivers via SW2 - see section
"5.3.4 SW2 (2 & 3) - Low Power Selection (page 10)".
The selection of which MIO pins controls which channels is via PCB LK7 - see section "5.2 Link
Settings (page 9)".
LK7 open (default) gives the following mapping: MIO4 to channels 0 & 1; MIO5 to channels 2 & 3;
MIO6 to channels 4 & 5; MIO7 to channels 6 & 7.
LK7 made gives MIO0 to channel 0, MIO1 to channel 1, ..... MIO7 to channel 7.
The EEPROM is set up to support MIO4, MIO5, MIO6 and MIO7 controlling power saving.
MIO0..MIO3 are unused (saving MIO2 to be used for PME if required) and MIO8..MIO11 used to
interrupts from the second quad UART.
The standard Oxford Semiconductor drivers do not support selection of power saving by use of the
MIO signals, but auto shutdown mode may still be used.

4. Installation
1. PMC modules should only be installed when the host carrier board is in a powered-off condition to
avoid damage to the PMC module and host carrier board.
2. After removing any blanking panels on the host carrier front panel, the PMC module should be
offered up to the host carrier site and the front panel carefully positioned through the host carrier
front panel opening, taking care not to damage the EMC gasket on the PMC module front panel.
3. The PMC module should be fixed to the host carrier using four M2.5 x 6mm pan-head screws into
the four fixing holes provided (two on the front panel and two on the spacers).
4. The PMCSIO is voltage-keyed for +5V host carriers only.
5. The PMCSIO can be used with a BVM supplied connecting lead to standard 9-way D-type
connectors, or a use supplied alternative.
6. Switches must be set accordingly for power management, RS422 termination, half/full duplex &
UART clocks -see section "5.3 Switch Settings (page 9)".
7. The installation can be tested with the diagnostic software on the Windows®Driver Disc - see
section "7.3 Diagnostic Software (page 14)".

5. Configuration
5.1 LED Indicators
Two LED indicators are fitted per channel, viewable from the top of the board when it is fitted onto a
host carrier. The GREEN LED indicates receive data and the RED LED indicates transmit data.

In auto-shutdown mode the RS232 transceivers enter a low power mode after 30 seconds of inactivity.

6. Connections
6.1 Front Panel Connector
A 68-way SCSI II style connector is fitted to the front of the board. An eight way break-out lead (68 way
to 8 off 9 pin D-types) with screw-locks is fitted to make the serial connections.
The mapping between the 68-way pins and the 8 serial channels is shown below.

This pin out is compatible with the BVM cIO200 used with cPC200 i.e. the same breakout lead may be
used with the front panel or rear panel I/O. With rear panel there are no ground pins.
This pin out allows the use of crimp ribbon cable from the 68-way SCSI connector to the D-types if
required.
The resulting 9 way D-type pin-outs are shown below in Figure 5.

7. Programming
7.1 Windows®Driver Disc
BVM can supply a disk containing the OX16PCI954 and OX16C954 Serial Controller driver files for
Windows®from Oxford Semiconductor along with BVM installation files. The BVM installation files will
ensure that the correct driver configuration is selected upon installation.
Windows®95, 98, NT4.0 and 2000 are currently supported using the serial ports in their enhanced
mode i.e. variable baud rates and large data FIFO's. Support for other operating systems should be
built in, as the UART's will appear to be standard 16C550 UART devices.
The standard drivers from Oxford Semiconductor for Windows®95, 98 and NT4.0 do not support
RS485 driver enable (via the DTR line), power saving or power management. The source code is
available from Oxford Semiconductor, so modifications are possible. Control of the RS485 driver
enables, by setting bits in the OX16PCI954 and OX16C954 control registers could be based upon the
PCI subsystem ID enabling automatic identification of RS422/485 channels.
The standard Windows®2000 drivers from Oxford Semiconductor do support RS485 driver enable
(via the DTR line), but not power saving or power management.
7.2 Configuration EEPROM
The EEPROM contains the BVM PCI Subsystem Vendor ID, which is 15C0 (hexadecimal) and the PCI
Subsystem ID's, which are 0110 (hexadecimal) for the OX16PCI954 with RS232 or 0111
(hexadecimal) for the OX16PCI954 with RS422 and 0112 (hexadecimal) for the OX16C954 with
RS232 or 0113 (hexadecimal) for the OX16C954 with RS422. Use of these ID's in addition to the
standard Oxford Semiconductor OX16PCI954 Serial Controller ID allows selection of the Oxford
Semiconductor driver via the BVM supplied installation files.
The EEPROM is supplied pre-programmed by BVM, but the OXPROM.EXE programming utility is
available from BVM if it proves necessary to reprogram the EEPROM memory device.
7.3 Diagnostic Software
Also supplied on the Windows®Driver Disc is a modified Oxford Semiconductor diagnostic utility for
the OX16PCI954 and OX16C954 Serial Controllers on the PMCSIO running under DOS. Follow the
utility instructions to check the PMCSIO.
The diagnostic utility requires serial loop-back connectors to function. The connections for these on 9-
way D-type connectors is shown below.
