followedwhenoperatingand/ormaintainingyoursystem.

2. AstheenergygivenoffbytheUVlampcanbeharmfultoyoureyesandskin,NEVERlookdirectly
atanilluminatedUV lampwithoutadequateeyeprotectionandalwaysprotectyourskinfrom
directexposuretotheUVlight.
3. Toensurethesystemprovidesadequatedisinfection,ALWAYSreplaceanycomponent(lampand
sleeve)withagenuinemanufacturer’sreplacementpart.

Please note that as the CALMAG commercial units are available in 230 volt only, special High
current GFCI’s (GFI’s) are required. These special GFCI’s can easily be obtained through an
electricalsupplyhouse,orarereadilyavailableformalocalspa/hottubsupplystoreastheyare
commonlyusedintheseapplications.

WaterQualityParameters:
UVdisinfectionisextremelyeffectiveagainstmicroorganismsbutonlyiftheUVlightcanpassthroughthe
waterit needsto treat.This means that the qualityof yourwater isvery importantin orderto ensure
completedisinfection.
Itisimperativethatyouhaveyourwatertestedforattheleasttheparameterslistedbelow.Ifthewater
exceeds the listed parameters CALMAG YORKSHIRE LTD strongly recommends that appropriate
pretreatmentequipmentbeinstalled(pretreatmentwilldependonparameterstargeted):

Youcanhaveyourwatertestedataprivateanalyticallaboratoryorcontactyourlocalcouncilforadvicein
regardstoyourlocalenvironmentalhealthofficer.Itisalwaysrecommendedtoinstallprefiltrationofat
least 5 microns prior to a CALMAG YORKSHIRELIMITED UV disinfection system. CALMAG YORKSHIRE
LIMITEDcansupplyprefiltersonallCommercialunitsrangingfromtheCALULTRA132totheCALULTRA

SystemSizing:
AllCALMAGYORKSHIRELIMITEDUVsystemsareratedforaspecificflowrateunderspecificwaterquality
parameters. The equipment has been designed to ensure that the appropriate dose will be delivered
provided all outlined parameters are met. PLEASE NOTEthat unless a flow restrictor is part of the
installation,thesystemmaypassmorewaterthroughthesystemthanwhatthesystemisratedat.Ifthis
happens,thesystemmaybedeliveringaUVdoselevelthatisbelowwhatmaybeexpected.Asaresult,
themaximumflowasspecifiedintheequipmentspecificationsshouldbestrictlyadheredto(alowerflow
isnotaconcernasthedosewillincreaseduetoalongercontacttime).
Itisimportanttoknowthemaximumflowratethatyourwatersystemdelivers.Ifyoudonothavethis
informationyoucansimplyfilla1gallonbucketwithwaterfromafaucetandtimehowlongittakestofill
up.Thiswillbethemaximumflowrateforthatparticularwatersystem.TheappropriateCalmagUVunit
shouldthenbechosen.
PLEASE NOTE:It is always better to oversize your UV system than to undersize. For example, if your
pumpdelivers190litresperminuteitisrecommendedtoinstalltheCALULTRA220UVunit.Therewillbe
occasionswhereyourhomeisusingwateratthepump’smaximumcapacity.
Location:
Step 1:Find a suitable location to mount the UV chamberand the accompanying control panel. In
choosingyourlocationensurethatthepanelislocatedwithin5feetofagroundfaultcircuitinterrupter
(GFCI)andthatthereiseasyaccesstothemaincoldwaterlinepriortoanybranchlinesandbeforethe
hotwater heater.The panelcan be upto 8 feetaway from thechamberoramaximumof5metersif
custom lamp cables are ordered (for an additional cost). If you have any other water treatment
equipment,suchasasoftenerorwaterfilter,ensurethattheUVisthelastpieceoftreatmentequipment.
PLEASENOTE:AllCALMAGYORKSHIRELTDUVdisinfectionsystemsareintendedforindooruseonlyas
theyshouldnotbeexposedtotheelements.
Step2:TherearetwodifferentCALULTRAcontrolpanels,dependingonwhichsystemispurchased.The
threesinglelampsystems(“35”,“55”and“85”series)useacontrolpanelthatis30.0x20.0x16.0cm
(11.8x7.9x6.3")insize(seeFigure2),whilethethreetwolampsystemsuseacontrolpanelthatis40.0
x30.0x16.0cm(15.8x11.8x6.3")insize(seeFigure3).

Step3:Your UV systemincludes mounting hardwarefor the UV chamberand the control panel. If the
suppliedfastenersarenot compatiblewith thestructurein whichyou are mountingthe device,please
ensureyouusethecorrectfasteners.
Step4:Tofacilitatelampremoval,ensurethereisenoughspaceatoneendtosafelyremovetheUVlamp
and/orquartzsleeve(aspaceequaltothelengthoftheunitwillsuffice)(seeFigure4).

Installation:
Step 1:The UV disinfection system should always be the last piece of treatment before the water
branchesofftoanyhotorcoldwaterlines.
Step2:CALMAGYORKSHIRELTDstronglyrecommendsthata5micronfilterbeinstalledbeforetheUV
systemforafinalpolishingstepbeforethewaterisdisinfected.
Step3:Thechambercanbeinstalledeitherhorizontallyorverticallyusingtheclampsprovided.
Step4:Ifyoudonotknowtheflowrateofthewatersupplyintheapplication,itisrecommendedthat
youuseaflowrestrictorsothattheratedflowofyourparticularCALULTRAsystemisnotexceededand
the UV dose is not compromised. The flow restrictor should be installed on the outlet port of the
chamber.
Step 5:It is strongly recommended to have a licensed plumber connect the UVchamberto the water
supply and may be a requirement depending on where you are located. If you are attempting this
yourself,ensureyouhaveallthenecessarytoolsandfittingstoaccomplishthistask.
Step 6:Although there are many methods of installation, this manual will provide a recommended
procedure using copper plumbing and standard soldering methods. CALMAG YORKSHIRE LTD
recommendstheuseofunions,abypassassemblyandshutoffvalvesasthiswillallowyoutoisolateand
remove the UV chamberif necessary (this is a recommended method only however it allows for the
maximumconveniencebutitrequiresextracomponentsandmoretimeforinstallation).
Step 7: Before you cut into the cold water line, measure and cut all piping as per the recommended
layout.Onceallthecomponentsareready,startbyinstallingthefemaleadaptersontotheportsofthe
chamber.Toensureaproperseal,theuseofPTFE™tapeisrecommendedonallthreadedconnections.
Step8:Nextsolderalltheassemblytogether,includingballvalvesandunionsandfinallyconnectedthe
bypassassemblytothecoldwaterfeedline(waterinandwaterout).
Step9:YoucannowgentlyremovethequartzsleevefromitspackagingbeingVERYcarefulnottotouch
thelengthwithyourhands.Theuseofcottongloves(notincluded)isrecommendedforthisprocedureas
oilsfromourhandscanleaveresidueonthesleeveandlampwhichcanultimatelyblocktheUVlightfrom
gettingtothewater.Inthepackage,youwillfindtwolubricatedOrings.
Step 10:Carefully slide the sleeve into the chamberuntil you can feel it hit the opposite end of the
chamber.Maneuverthesleevegentlyuntilitslidesthroughtheoppositeendofthechamber.Witha¼”
ofthesleevestickingouteachendofthechamberslideoneOringontoeachend.EnsurethateachO
ring is butted up against the chamber(see Figure 5). Assemble the bottom gland nut (the black nut
without the through hole) onto the threaded end of the chamberand tighten. The gland nuts have a
positivestoptoavoidovertightening,handtightenONLY.Next,assemblethetopglandnut(theblacknut
withthe throughhole) ontothethreaded endof the chamberandtighten.Slidetheprovidedstainless
steel compression spring inside the quartz sleeve. This spring simply sits in the bottom of the quartz
sleeveandworkswiththelampandconnectortocreatetheproperlampalignment.

Step 13:The control panel can now be mounted on the wall. It should always be above or beside the
chamberto ensure that no moisture can deposit on any of the connections. For safety purposes the
controlpanelshould be connectedto aground fault circuit interrupter(GFCI) (alsoknown asa ground
faultinterrupter(GFI)). The controlpanel can bemountedupto8feetawayfromthechamberunless
customcableshavebeenpurchased.
Step14:YoucannowremovetheUVlampfromitspackagingbeingcarefulnottotouchthelampquartz
with your hands. Again, the use of cotton gloves is recommended to avoid deposited oils on the lamp
glass.Alwaysholdthelampbytheceramicends.CarefullyinserttheUVlampintothechamberslidingit
insidethequartzsleevelocatedinsidethechamber(donotdropthelampintothechamber).Withthe
lampoutsideofthechamber,affixtheUVlamptothelampconnectorasshowninFigure8.
Step15:Beforethelampiscompletelyinsertedintothe sleeve,affixthelamtothelamp connectoras
shown in Figure 8. Affix the connector into the gland nut by inserting the connector into the nut and
turningtheconnectorapproximately¼turntolocktheconnectortotheglandnut(seeFigure9).

Step17:YoursystemisnowreadytobepluggedintotheappropriateGFCIprotectedoutlet.Plugtheunit
inandrefertothe“SystemDisinfection”sectionbeforeanywaterisallowedtoflowthroughthesystem.
SystemDisinfection:
Nowthatthesystemisinstalledyouwillneedtodisinfectthelinesthroughouttheentirehomeorfacility.
Toaccomplishthis,pleasefollowthesesimplesteps:
Step1:Beforeperformingthistask,checktomakesurethatthereareno“deadends”inthelineswithin
the water system you are treating as these can harbor bacteria. Also ensure that the UV system is
poweredupandreadyforoperationbeforeyoustartthisdisinfectionprocess.
Step 2:Remove the cartridge from the filter sump and fill with 12 cups of household bleach (most
householdbleachesare5.25%chlorine).Replacefiltersumpandslowlyturnonthewatersupply.
Step 3:Go to each location in the home or facility (including outdoor taps) and run some water until
chlorine can be detected (by smell). Ensure all faucets, dishwasher, shower heads, washing machine,
toilets,showers,refrigerators,etc.areallchecked.Oncethechlorineisdetectedateachlocationcloseall
faucetsandletthechlorinesitinthelinesforaminimumof30minutes.
Step 4:After 30 minutes, reinstall the filter cartridge into the filter sump and then flush the chlorine
solutionbyopeningallfaucetsandletthemrununtilchlorinecannolongerbedetected(bysmell).Your
home/facilityhasnowbeencompletelydisinfectedandyourCALULTRAUVsystemisreadytoinactivate
anymicroorganismsthatenterthewatersystem.
PLEASE NOTE:This procedure must be performed following any time the UV is shut down for service,
withoutpower,orisinoperativeforsomereasoninordertoavoidpossiblecontaminationofthewater
lines.
CleaningtheQuartzSleeve:
Depending on the water quality, the quartz sleeve may require periodic cleaning. At a minimum, the
quartz sleeve should be cleaned on an annual basis. The following steps outline a basic cleaning
procedure.
Step1:Ifthesystem hasan inletshutoffvalve, shut thisvalve offto preventwater flowthrough the
system.Ifthereisnoinletshutoffvalve,turnoffmainwaterinletvalve(andturnoffwaterpumpifyou
haveone).
Step2:DisconnectpowercordofUVsystemfromelectricaloutlet.
Step3:Releasewaterpressurebyopeningadownstreamfaucetandclosetheoutletshutoffvalveifthe
installation incudes one (if there is no outlet shutoff valve, be prepared for water leakage from the
systemastheheadpressureinthesystemwillcausewatertoflowbackthroughtheoutletplumbingand
throughthechamber).
Step4:RemovethecaptivegroundscrewfromthegroundlugontheUVchamber.

Step5:Remove the lamp connector from the chamber(gland nut) by pushing the connector in and
turning it ¼ turn counterclockwise (gently pull on the lamp cable to ensure the connector is seated
properly).
Step6:Pulllampoutofchamberstillattachedtoconnector.
Step7:Removetheglandnutfromeachendofthechamberexposingtheendsofthequartzsleeve.
Step8:WhileholdingontobothendsofthesleevecarefullyremovetheOringfromtheendopposite
from the lamp connection and then pull the quartz sleeve out of the chamber (ensure that no water
enterstheinsideofthequartzsleeve);removesecondOring
Step9:Usingasoft,lintfreeclothortowelwipethesleevedownusingagoodcommercialscalecleaner
toremoveanyscalingorirondepositsthatmaybeontheoutsideofthequartzsleeve.Becarefulnotto
getanymoistureorliquidsontheinsideofthesleeve.
Step10:Wipethesleevewithseparatedrycloth.
Step11:Oncethesleeveiscleanedslideitbackintothechamberfollowingthestepsoutlined.
Step12:ReplacebothOrings.
CleaningtheUVSensor(ifapplicable):

Step4:Place something under the chamberto catch any water that may come out of the chamber
duringtheremovaloftheUVsensor.
Step5:Unscrew(counterclockwise)sensornutfromthechamberandpullthesensorslowlyoutofthe
sensorport.
Step6:Holdingthesensorinyourhandwipetheflatportion(sensorface)ofthesensorwithisopropyl
alcoholusingacleanlintfreecloth.
Step7:Replacesensorasperinstructionsofthismanual.

Operation:
The CALMAG YORKSHIRE LTD CALULTRAsystem comes with a feature laden control system that
incorporatesboththelampdriver(ballast)andcontrolfeaturesinonemodularpanel.CAUTION:Priorto
performinganymaintenanceonyourUVsystem,youmustalwaysdisconnectthepower(DONOTSIMPLY
USETHESWITCHONTHEFRONTOFTHECONTROLLER).
CALULTRAControlPanel
Thecontrolpanelfeaturesapowerfactorcorrectedandconstantcurrentlamp
driver.Simplisticinoperation,thepanelfeaturesanLEDdisplayforremaining
lamplife,totalrunninghours,audibleand visuallampfailure,remote onand
solenoidready.Whenthe UVlamp(s)is/areon,thesecond LEDboxwillread
“ON”.WhentheUVlamp(s)is/arenoton,theLEDboxwillread“OFF”andan
audiblealarmwillsound.PleaseNote:IftheLEDreads“OFF”andthealarmis
sounding then the water from the system should NOT be consumed. If any
water does pass through the UV system during this period,please follow the
disinfection procedure as outlined in this manual before the water is
consumed.ItshouldalsobenotedthatontheCALULTRAsystemeventhough
thissystemdoeshaveavisualandaudiblewarningbuiltintothecontrols,the
LEDreading“ON”doesnotnecessarilyindicatethatthewatercomingfromthis
systemisinfactpotable(safetodrink).Thissystemdoesnotmeasurethelevel
of disinfection; it simply measures the “ONOFF” status of the lamp. For a
constantreassuranceofsafewaterqualityyoushouldconsidertheCALULTRA
upgradewithaUVsensor(youcanalsoaddtheoptionalRSRUVsensoronall
CALULTRAsystems). Please have your water checked for microbiological
contaminantsonaregularbasis.
CALULTRA3PositionSwitch
Thecontrolpanelfeaturesa3positionuserselectableswitch.ThisswitchisNOTapowerswitchandit
shouldbenotedthatoncethecontrolpanelispluggedintoanelectricaloutlet,theunitispoweredand
considered“ON”.Theswitchfunctionsasfollows:
“ON”position – Power issupplied tothe lamp(s)and the controllerwillread
“ON”onthelowerLEDdisplayonunitswithoutaUVsensorinstalledandwill
read the intensity (or UV output) on units with a UV sensor installed. Please
note that when first starting the lamp(s), the system will cycle through a
decliningnumericalsequencewhilethelamp(s)reachesfullpower.
“OFF”position–PowerisNOTsuppliedtothelamp(s)andthelamp(s)willbe
off.Thecontrollerwillread“OFF”onthelowerLEDdisplay.

“REMOTE” position – In this position, the control of the unit is placed in a
remote location (i.e. a computer) via an attached remote cable. Through this
cable, the operator must supply a 24 volt power source that will allow these
“drycontacts”tooperate.Thescreensandthe“ON”and“OFF”functionswill
now all be operated remotely. While the UV controller is in the remote
position,EXTREMECAUTIONmustbeexercisedaroundtheUVchamberwhile
servicingtheUVlampsastheymaybeturnedonoroffremotelywithoutthe
operatorsknowledgeorcontrol.Asaresult,itisnotrecommendedtoservice
the lamp(s) while the controller is in the “REMOTE” mode and the system
should be physically disconnected from the power source, or the controller
manuallyswitchedtothe“OFF”positionwhileservicingthelamp(s).
CALULTRAPowerupSequence
Uponstartup, the CALULTRAcontrolswillindicatewhen thesystemis ready
fortreatmentby the indicatedcountdownonthebottomLEDscreen.Inthis
time,theUVOutputofthelampisincreasingandthe“ReadyForFlow”logicis
“NO”.After180seconds,iftheUVoutputlevelisadequatefordisinfection,the
“ReadyforFlow”logicis“YES”andthesystemwilloperateasintended.
UVOutput
If your system is equipped with a UV sensor, CALULTRAwill display the UV
outputin either“% UV Intensity”or “mW/cm2”.The defaultoutput is“% UV
Intensity” and to toggle between these two outputs, simply press the button
locateddirectlybeneaththebottomLEDscreen.TheUVOutputLEDscreenwill
indicatethelevelofUVintensitythatisbeingdetectedwithinthechamberby
thesensor.Thiswillalwaysbevisibleonthefrontofthecontrolpanel.Things
that can affect the UV Output are poor water quality, scaling of the quartz
sleeveand/orsensor,lampfailure,expiredlamplifeandsensorfailure.
WhentheUVoutputdropsto60%(or12mW/cm2),the systemwilldisplaya
“LOW UV” warning light in yellow and the system will emit an intermittent
audiblechirptosignalthis“LOWUV”condition.WhentheUVoutputdropsto
50%(or10mW/cm2),thesystemwilldisplaya“LOWUV”warninglightinred
andthesystemwillemitanconstantaudiblealarmtosignalthiscritical“LOW

UV”condition.Additionally,atthispoint,thecontrolleralsoprovidesasignalto
deactivatetheflowofwater ifimplimentedinthe system.Whenthesystem
registersalowUVcondition,theonlywaytosilencethealarmsistocorrectthe
reasonforthislowUVcondition.Thismaybetheresultofanagedlamp,ora
fouledsleeveand/orsensor,orperhapsachangeinwaterquality.Pleaserefer
toothersectionsinthismanualfordirectiononremedyingthesesituations.
CALULTRALampCountdownSequence
TheCALULTRAcontrolpaneldisplaysacountdownfeaturethatdisplaysthenumberofhoursremaining
until a lamp change is required. At 512 hours until lamp change the numerical lamp change value will
begintoflashindicatingthatlampexpirationisnear.At“zerohoursremaining”,thesystemregisteran
audiblealarm.Ifyouwishtosilencethisaudiblealarmcondition,simplypressandholddownthebutton
located directly beneath the top LED screen for a period of three seconds.PLEASE NOTE:During the
condition of lamp expiration, the water may be unsafe for consumption and should not be consumed
withoutanotherformofdisinfection.
CALULTRALampCountdownResetSequence
After changing the lamp on the CALULTRAsystems, the control panel must be reset in order for the
systemtobeginitscountdownfunctiononthenewlyinstalledlamp.Toreset,simplypressandholddown
thebuttonlocateddirectlybeneaththetopLEDscreenforaperiodoffifteenseconds.Releasethebutton
andthelampcountdownfeaturehasnowbeenreset.
CALULTRAFailureModes
TheCALULTRAcontrolpanelcontinuouslymonitorsyourUVsystemandifthereisaproblemwiththe
systemthepanelwillprovidebothavisualandaudiblesignalindicatingthespecificfaultthatmaybe
adverselyaffectingtheoperationofyoursystem.Thefaultconditionsarelistedinaprioritysequenceas
follows:
LAMPFAILURE:Ifatanytimeduringtheoperationofthesystem,theUV
lamp fails to be illuminated, the controller will return both an audible and
visualsignalindicatinglampfailure.Inaddition,aconstantaudiblebuzzerwill
soundduringlampfailure.

UVSENSORFAILURE:AssumingthesystemhasaUVSensorinstalled,ifat
anytimeduringtheoperationofthesystem,aUVsensorfails,thecontroller
willreturna“FAIL”indicatoronthebottomLEDscreenandaconstantaudible
buzzerwillsoundduringsensorfailure.
CALULTRAOptions
Althoughfeaturessuchasremotemonitoringand420mAoutputarebuiltintothecontroller,their
outputrequiresoptionalcablesasshownbelow.Eachcableandmatingconnectorareuniqueinregards
totheirsize,sothereisnochanceofinstallingthewrongcableinthewrongconnector.
