200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens is a high-
performance telephoto zoom lens equipped
with an Image Stabilizer.

6 Safety Precautions
•Donotlook at the sun or a bright light source
through the lens or camera. Doing so couldresult
in loss of vision.Looking at the sun directlythrough
the lens is especially hazardous.
•Whetherit is attached to the camera or not,do
notleave the lens under the sun without the
lens cap attached. This is to prevent thelens from
concentrating the sun's rays, whichcouldcause a
fire
Handling Cautions
•Ifthe lens is takenfroma cold environment into
awarm one, condensation may develop onthe
lens surfaceand internalparts. To prevent
condensation in this case,first put the lens into an
airtightplasticbag before taking it from a cold to
warm environment. Thentake out thelens afterit
haswarmed gradually. Dothe same when taking
the lens from a warm environment into a cold one.
•Do not leave thelensin excessiveheatsuch as in
acar in direct sunlight.High temperaturescan
cause the lens to malfunction.

interierence received,including interference that may cause
undesired operation.

1.Mounting and Detaching the Lens
u
o Afterdetaching thelens,placethelenswith the
rearend up to prevent thelens surface and
electrical contactsfrom getting scratched.
o Ifthe contacts getsoiled,scratched,orhave
fingerprints on them,corrosionorfaulty
connections can result.The cameraand lens
may not operate properly.
o If the contacts getsoiled or have fingerprints on
them,cleanthemwith asoft cloth.
o If you removethelens, coverit withthedust
cap. To attachit properly,align thelensmount
index and the 0 index of thedust cap as shown
inthe diagram,and turn clockwise. Toremove it,
reverse the order.
Thelensmount hasa rubber ring forenhanced
water- and dust-resistance. Therubber ring may
cause slight abrasions aroundthe camera'slens
mount,butthis will not cause any problems. If the
rubber ring becomesworn,it is replaceablebya
CanonServiceCenter atcost.

2. Setting the Focus
Mode
To shootin autofocus (AF)mode, setthe focus
mode switch to AF.
To use only manual focusing (MF),set the focus
mode switch to MF,and focusbyturning the
focusingring. The focusing ring always works,
regardless of the focusmode.
aJ After autofocusing in ONE SHOT AF mode,focus
manually by pressing the shutter buttonhalfway
and turning the focusing ring.(Full-time manual
focus)
3. Switching the Focusing
Distance Ran e
Youcanset thefocusing distance range to
1.2 m/3.9ft. toinfinity or2.5m/8.2 ft. toinfinity.
By setting the suitable focusing distance range,
the actualautofocusingtime can be shorter.
U Be sureto finish zooming beforefocusing.
Zooming after focusing can affect the focus.

TheET-87 hood can keep unwantedlight out ofthelens,and also protectsthe front of thelens from
rain,snow,and dust.
Attaching
To attach thehood,align thehood's attachment
position mark with thered doton the front of the
lens, then turn thehood as shown bythe arrow
until the lens' red dotis alignedwith thehood's
stop position mark.
Removing
Toremove thehood,hold down the buttonon the
side and turn the hood in thedirectionof the
arrow untilthepositionmark on thehood aligns
with thered dot.
Thehood can be reverse-mountedon thelens
forstorage.
••• Part of the picturemay be blocked if thehood isnotattached properly.
• When attaching ordetachingthehood, grasp thebase of thehood toturn it.Toprevent deformation,do not
grasp the rim of the hood toturn it.
6.Image Stabilizer Settings
•Ifyou arenot going to use the
image stabilizer function,set
the switch toOFF.
2 Select the stabilizer mode.
•MODE 1:Corrects vibrations
in all directions.It ismainly
effective for shooting still
subjects.
• MODE 2: Itcompensates for
verticalcamera shake during
followingshotsin ahorizontal
direction,and compensatesfor
horizontalcamera shake
during following shotsina
verticaldirection .
3 When you press the shutter
button halfway,theImage
Stabilizerwill start
operating.
• Make suretheimagein the
viewfinder is stable,then press
the shutter buttontherestof
the way down totakethe
picture.

7. Tips on Using the ImC ge§tabilizer
•In semi-darkened areas suchas indoors or
outdoors at night.
•In locations whereflashphotography is
prohibited,suchas art museums andtheater
stages.
•In situations where your footing isuncertain.
•In situations wherefast shuttersettings cannot
be used.
oThe Image Stabilizer cannot compensate for a
blurred shot causedby a subject thatmoved.
o Set theSTABILIZER switchto OFF whenyou are
taking pictures using the Bulb setting (long
exposures). If the STABILIZER switch is set to ON,
the image stabilizerfunction may introduce errors.
o TheImage Stabilizer might not be fully effective
in the following cases:
o Youshoot while riding on a bumpy road.
o Youmove the camera dramatically for a
panning shot in Mode 1.
o You shootusingtechniques other than
following shots in Mode 2.
oThe Image Stabilizer consumes more power
than normalshooting,so fewer shots canbe
taken if you use the function.
o The image stabilizeroperates for about two
seconds even when yourfingeris off the shutter
button.Do notremove the lens whilethe stabilizer
is in operation. This willcause a malfunction.
o With theEOS-1V/HS,3,ELAN7E/ELAN
7/30/33,ELAN lNE/ELAN7N/30V/33V,ELAN
II/ELAN IIE/50/50E,REBEL2000/300,IX,and
030, theImage Stabilizerwillnot work during
self-timer operation.
aJ . Usinga tripod also stabilizes the image.
However,depending on the kind of tripod and
shooting conditions,sometimesit may be better
to turn off theImage Stabilizer function.
•Thestabilizer isequally effective for hand-held
photographyand photography witha monopod.
•TheImage Stabilizer function also operates
when thelens isused with theEF12 II/EF25 II
Extension Tube,and the EF1.4X II/EF2X II
Extender.
•Picturesmay look distorted after being taken
depending onthe camera,but thisdoesn't affect
shooting.
•If you set the camera's Custom Function to
change the assigned button to operate the AF,
theImage Stabilizer will operate when you press
the newly assignedAFbutton.

8. Infinity Compensation Mark
To compensate for shifting of the infinity focus
point that resultsfrom changes in temperature.
Theinfinity positionat normal temperatureis the
point atwhich the vertical line of theLmarkis
aligned with the distance indicator onthe
distance scale.
o For accuratemanual focusing ofsubjects at
infinity,look through the viewfinder or look at the
magnified image*on theLCDscreen while
rotating thefocusing ring.

The infrared index corrects the focus setting when using
monochromeinfrared film.Focus onthe subject
manually,then adjust the distance setting by movingthe
focusing ring to the corresponding infrared index mark.
o Some EOS cameras cannot use infrared film.See
the instructions for yourEOS camera.
aJ. The infrared index position is based on a
wavelength of 800 nm.
•The compensation amount differs depending on
the focal length. Use theindicated focallengthas
a guide whensetting the compensation amount.
• Be sure to observe themanufacturer's
instructions when usinginfrared film.
•Use a red filter when you take thepicture.

Adjusting theRevolving Mount
You can loosen the orientation lock-knob onthe tripod mount to allow itto rotate as needed to fit a
particular camera model forswitching between verticalandhorizontalpositions.
Detaching
First remove thelensfrom the camera and then remove thetripod mount from thelens as shown
below.To attachthe tripod mount, reverse theprocedure.

Youcan attachfilterstothefiltermountingthread
on thefront ofthelens.
U. If youneed a polarizingfilter,usethe Canon
Circular Polarizing Filter(77mm).
•To adjustthe polarizing filter,first removethe
lenshood.
