SUBJECT: UNNECESSARY REPLACEMENT OF THE HYDRAULIC
COUPLERS – INCORRECT USE OR INCORRECT
MAINTENANCE OF THE HYDRAULIC COUPLERS
DESCRIPTION
The information in the service bulletin will provide information on how to maintain hydraulic couplers properly.
Unnecessary hydraulic coupler replacement
People replace the hydraulic couplers unnecessarily for the following issues:
•Leaks due to contamination
NOTE: See the section “Hydraulic coupler oil leakage:”.
•Hard to connect or disconnect
NOTE: See the section “A Jammed latching ball can make the hydraulic coupler difficult to connect or disconnect.”
•The hose ends eject from the hydraulic coupler
NOTE: See the section “Male implement ends pop out of the hydraulic coupler”.
Incorrect use and incorrect maintenance of a hydraulic coupler
Incorrect use and incorrect maintenance of the hydraulic coupler can shorten the service life of the hydraulic cou-
pler. The following are examples of incorrect use or incorrect maintenance that can cause a hydraulic coupler fail-
ure:
•Someone who connects the hydraulic coupler where contamination such as dirt and debris is present
•Someone who connects the hydraulic coupler to a male hydraulic coupler that has damaged components, dirty
components, or worn components
•The use of excessive force to disconnect the hydraulic coupler

2 27 July 2015 F29766C-F29766C EN
•The Implement hoses are too short. Short implement hoses can cause stress on the hydraulic coupler when the
operator turns the tractor.
•The failure to disconnect the implement coupler before the operator drives away from the implement.

Service instruction
Make sure that your customers know how to correctly
use and maintain the hydraulic coupler. Inform your cus-
tomers how to troubleshoot common hydraulic coupler
failures.
NOTE: The hydraulic coupler assembly (part number
435375A1 ) will no longer be available through service
parts. An analysis of warranty returns shows that the ma-
jority of replaced hydraulic coupler assemblies were not
necessary. Instead, servicing the cartridge (part number
84262367 ) would normally resolve the issue. The coupler
casting (part number 292323A1 ) is available as a sepa-
rate service part if you need to order.

Usage
See the information that follows to correctly connect or
disconnect the hydraulic coupler:
•Relieve the hydraulic pressure before you connect or
disconnect the hydraulic coupler. This practice pre-
vents damage to components of the hydraulic coupler
such as the seal, the valve, and the locking balls.
•Do not use excessive force to disconnect or connect
the hydraulic coupler. Use your hands. Do not use a pry
tool to disconnect the hydraulic coupler.
•Make sure that the hydraulic couplers of the tractor are
clean prior to connection. Make sure that the hydraulic
couplers remain free of dirt and debris after disconnec-
tion.
•Make sure that the male end of the implement coupler
is clean prior to connection.
•Make sure that you connect the hydraulic coupler to the
correct type of male coupler. For a list of compatible
male couplers, see to the operator’s manual.
•Check the hose routings of the male tip that are in the
valve stack. Are the hose routings tight or too loose,
especially under sharp turns? Improper hose routings
could lead to future damage.
Maintenance
See the information that follows to clean the hydraulic
coupler. Also, prevent contamination of dirt and debris
prior to the connection of an implement.
•Use a solvent degreasing spray such as (part number
ZRG017CBRC ) to remove dirt and debris inside the
hydraulic coupler. For example, clean the seat, the mat-
ing area, the latching balls, and between the sleeve and
the body.
•Use a solvent degreasing spray and a clean rag to re-
move dirt and debris from the corresponding male im-
plement coupler.
•To prevent contamination of disconnected couplers,
close the protection cover for the coupler. Install a dust
cover on the corresponding male coupler.

Troubleshooting
A Jammed latching ball can make the hydraulic coupler
difficult to connect or disconnect.
1. Clean the hydraulic coupler, especially inside the hy-
draulic coupler. For more information, see the section
“Maintenance” earlier.
2. Remove any dirt or debris from the corresponding im-
plement male coupler.
3. Reconnect the hydraulic coupler.
4. Disconnect the hydraulic coupler.
5. If difficulty still occurs, repeat the cleaning process.

4 27 July 2015 F29766C-F29766C EN
6. If after you perform the cleaning process three times
and the difficulty still occurs, replace the hydraulic cou-
pler.
Hydraulic coupler oil leakage:
In many cases, you can fix a leaking hydraulic coupler
by cleaning the hydraulic coupler, flushing the hydraulic
coupler, or installing a seal kit. Follow the process below
to troubleshoot a leaking hydraulic coupler.
1. Clean the hydraulic coupler.
2. Make sure that the hydraulic coupler connects and
disconnects easily.
3. Connect the hydraulic coupler to the corresponding
male connector.
4. Flow oil in both directions to flush debris from the
poppet seat.
5. Disconnect the hydraulic coupler.
6. Reconnect the hydraulic coupler.
7. Pressurize the hydraulic system.
8. If leakage occurs, replace the O-ring and the backup
ring (1) .
NOTE: Use seal kit (part number 87428689 ).
9. If you do not find leakage, disconnect the hydraulic
coupler. Check for leakage.
10. If you find leakage:
A. Thoroughly clean the hydraulic coupler.
B. Disconnect the hydraulic coupler.
C. Pressurize the system to check for leakage.
D. If you find leakage, there is a failure of the valve
seal or there is a failure of the internal seals.
Replace the hydraulic coupler cartridge and the
seals.
BAIL15SBA0346AA 2
Cartridge replacement
•Use cartridge (part number 84262367 ). Inspect the
slipper seals and the O-rings for damage.
•If the slipper seals (1) or the O-rings (2) have cuts
or have tears, replace with the two slipper seals (part
number 86013221 ) and the two O-rings (part number
14454480 ).
BAIL15SBA0347AA 3
Male implement ends pop out of the hydraulic coupler
The male implement ends spontaneously release from
the hydraulic coupler because of the following reasons:
•Worn implement male couplers

5 27 July 2015 F29766C-F29766C EN
•Internal hydraulic coupler leakage into the case drain
line of the hydraulic coupler
•Too much oil flow through the implement connection of
the case drain line
Worn implement male couplers
1. Inspect the implement male coupler tips.
2. If worn or there is damage, replace.
Internal hydraulic coupler leakage into the case drain
line of the hydraulic coupler
If one of the remote couplers leaks, the remote cou-
pler will return oil through the case drain port to the
reservoir. If the remote coupler leaks, the remote
coupler could pressurize this drain port and cause
the remote couplers to pop out. To check for this
condition:
■Inspect the implement male couplers (see above).
■If the implement coupler tips are not worn or do not
have damage, install a gauge in the case drain port
in the remote manifold. This location is the plug just
above the motor return port. BAIL15SBA0348AA 4
○Energize each valve in extend and retract.
○If the pressure increases when you energize one
valve, then that hydraulic coupler has an internal
leak.
NOTE: Replace that hydraulic coupler cartridge and
the seals.
Too much oil flow through the implement connection
of the case drain line
○The implement case drain tees into the coupler
of the case drain line. A high flow rate of the case
drain for the implement can cause pressure to build
up in the case drain line of the hydraulic coupler.
This high flow rate can cause the hydraulic couplers
to pop out of place. You normally see this condition
with the operation of a hydraulic fan or hydraulic
motor such as an air seeder in cold, ambient condi-
tions.
■Perform a test for internal hydraulic coupler leak-
age (see above).
BAIL15SBA0349AA 5

○If there is not an internal leak in the hydraulic cou-
plers and you have a hydraulic motor connected with
a case drain, perform one of the following tasks:
Use a separate case drain line for the implement di-
rectly back to the hydraulic tank.
OR
Install the secondary case drain kit (part number
84386915 ). Connect the implement case drain line
to the secondary case drain coupler.
