TheCX490D/CX500Disacrawlerhydraulicexcavator.Itconsistsofanundercarriagettedwithtracksanda
turntablebearingwhichsupportstheupperstructureframe.Theupperstructureframesupportstheattachment,at
thefrontendofthemachine,plustheengine,hydraulicsandcab.Whentheoperatorworksthecontrols,theen-
gine-drivenpumpdelivershydraulicuidtothecontrolvalves.Thecontrolvalvesdistributethehydraulicuidtothe
variouscylindersandhydraulicmotorsemployed.Acoolingsystemmaintainsthehydraulicuidatnormaloperating
temperature.

YourCASECONSTRUCTIONmachineisequippedwithanSCRaftertreatmentsystemtocomplywiththerequire-
mentsforexhaustemissionssetbytheUSEnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA).Themaincomponentsofthe
SCRsystemincludetheSCRcatalyst,theDEF/ADBLUE®dosingcontrolunit,theDEF/ADBLUE®injectionsystem,
andtheDEF/ADBLUE®tank.
HowdoesSelectiveCatalyticReduction(SCR)work?
Duringcombustion,harmfulNitrogenOxide(NOx)moleculesareformedintheexhaust.ByinjectingaDEF/ADBLUE®
solutionintotheexhaustpriortoacatalyst,theNOxcanbeconvertedtoharmlesselementalNitrogenandwater.This
happenswhentheNOxmoleculesreactinsidethecatalystwiththeheatgeneratedbytheengineandtheammonia
intheDEF/ADBLUE®solution.
NOTICE:Prolongedidlingofthemachinewithnoloadformorethan6hwillcausedamagetotheSCRcatalyst.
Duringcoldengineoperationatlowenginecoolantandambientairtemperatures,watervaporwillbevisiblefromthe
exhaust.Thiswatervaporwillresemblesteamorlightwhitesmoke,andwilldissipateastheengineandmachine
componentswarm.Thiswatervaporisconsiderednormal.
NOTE:TheSCRsystemcontinuestooperateforapproximately3minafterthestarterkeyisturnedoffinorderto
suckDEF/ADBLUE®backintothetank.DEF/ADBLUE®expandswhenfreezing,anditwillthusdamagethelinesof
theSCRsystem.Thisisconsiderednormal,andrequiresnoactionfromtheoperator.

DEF/ADBLUE®isaclear,colorless,non-toxic,aqueousureasolution(32.5%)withaslightammoniaodor.Itisused
tochemicallyreduceNOxemissionsfromheavy-dutydiesel-poweredvehicles.DEF/ADBLUE®isneitherexplosive
norharmfultotheenvironment.DEF/ADBLUE®isclassiedundertheminimum-riskcategoryoftransportableuids.

Thawing
•YourCASECONSTRUCTIONmachineisequippedwithaninternaltankheatertothawfrozenDEF/ADBLUE®.
YourmachinewillstillfunctionuntiltheDEF/ADBLUE®beginstoow.TheSCRsystemwillthenfunctionnormally.
NOTE:youmaynoticeaslightreductioninenginetorqueinhighdemandsituationsuntiltheDEF/ADBLUE®isfully
thawed.
•DonotheatDEF/ADBLUE®forlongperiodsoftimeattemperaturesabove30°C(86°F).Thiscausesthesolution
todecompose,whichveryslowlydecreasestheexpectedshelflife.
NOTICE:donotuseananti-gellingorfreezepointimproverinyourDEF/ADBLUE®.The32.5%solutionisspecically
designedtoprovidetheoptimumNOxreductionproperties.AnyfurtherblendingoradjustingoftheDEF/ADBLUE®
mixturewilllessenitsabilitytoperformcorrectlyandmaycausedamagetothecomponentsoftheSCRsystem.
