EXPLORER 8100 GX
Quick Guide
IMPORTANT
Observe all safety requirements listed in the
beginning of the User & installation manual,
and install and use the system according to the
guidelines in the User & installation manual. The
User & installation manual is available
• in the web interface in the ACU (next section),
or
• on www.cobham.com/satcom (select
Cobham SYNC Partner Portal >
Downloads > Manuals).
Access the web interface
1. Switch on the Antenna Control Unit (ACU).
2. Connect your computer to LAN 1 on the
back of the ACU.
3. Open your Internet browser and enter the IP
address of the ACU. The default IP address is
ht tp://192.168.0.1.
4. On the ACU keypad, push and hold for 5
seconds and enter user name: admin (no
password) in the web interface.
Note: Change the administrator password
immediately after login!
5. To access the User & installation manual,
select HELPDESK > Support and click the
link under User manual.
Initial setup
From the web interface, select SETTINGS >
Network and make sure that LAN 5 is set up for
Static IP and the IP address 192.168.1.2.
Nofurthercongurationisnecessary, except to
calibrate the antenna and make sure the satellite
proleisactivatedasdescribedonthenextpage.
Connect the system
Connect the cables according to the wiring
diagram below. Use the following cables:
1. Ethernet cable for modem communication.
2. 75 Ohm RF cable, F-F connectors, for TX
(included with ACU).
3. 75 Ohm RF cable, F-F connectors, for RX
(included with ACU).
4. RS-232 cable (included with GMU).
5. RS-422 cable (included with GMU).
6. LNB RX cable (part of included cable harness).
7. ODU Comm (part of included cable harness).
8. BUC TX (part of included cable harness).
9. ODU Power & Comm (part of included cable
harness).
10. BUC Power & Comm (included with antenna)
11. Service port - Ethernet cable to computer e.g.
for access to web interface.

Important! Calibrate the compass
You must make a compass calibration every time
the antenna is installed. If the compass is not
calibrated the system will not work properly!
1. Parkthecarinaatarea,awayfromanylarge
magnetic objects, and make sure the antenna
is stowed.
2. Switch on the ACU.
3. When the LEDs are steady green on the ACU,
connect a computer to the ACU, access
the web interface and go to SERVICE >
Calibration.
4. Under Compass calibration, click Start.
5. WhentheStatuseldshowsReady, move
the vehicle to the next position, 90 degrees
relative to the current position, and click
Continue.
6. When all four steps are completed, the
Continue button changes to Start. The
compass calibration is now completed.
Satellite prole activated
1. In the web interface select
SETTINGS > Satellite proles.
2. VerifythattheGXsatelliteproleisactivated.
Notethatthesatelliteprolemustusea
modemprolewiththeGXModemUnit.
Start the system
1. Switch on the ACU and the GX Modem Unit
(GMU).
2. Wait until the LEDs on the front plate of the
ACU show that the system is ready to be
congured:
• Power LED: Green
• Logon LED: Off
• Fail/Pass LED: Flashing green during power-
on self test, after that steady green.
3. In the keypad, press and hold pfor 5
seconds to deploy the antenna.
4. Wait until the ACU display shows
TRACKING.
5. Check that the connected GMU is ready
(the ACU display shows MDM: NETOK).
6. When the GMU is ready you can connect
your equipment to the ACU and use it to
connect to the Internet via the GX network.

manual.
Stow the antenna
When you are not using the antenna it must be
stowed. In the ACU keypad, press and hold q
for 5 seconds.
Keypad and display
You can use the keypad and display of the ACU
for simple operations and for status information.
Keypad shortcuts:
Deploy: Press and hold pfor 5 seconds.
Stow: Press and hold qfor 5 seconds.
Restart: Press and hold pand quntil restart.
