Using the ADA interface
The ADA interface allows people with reach
challenges (such as those in wheelchairs)
to use Freestyle® at McDonald’s without
having to reach the touch screen.
NOTE: The ADA screen will revert back to the
standard home screen after one minute of
inactivity, or press “ADA Exit Button” in the
upper right corner.
NOTE: The touch screen will time out after 10
seconds and return to the home screen.

the top of cartridge) and scan the RFID tag
in front of the RFID Reader on the left side
of the front door. In doing so, the front
door of the dispenser will open, and the

Crew Dashboard

Bold alerts provide clear direction when
maintenance is required.

Reduce product waste by reading each
ingredient cartridge’s color-coded fuel
gauge displaying the % of product
remaining and enjoy by date.

The time-remaining feature provides an
accurate reading for when a cartridge is
likely to run out, down to the hour. This
feature is calculated using the dispenser’s
actual consumption activity and day-part
data, to deliver a dynamic and precise
reading throughout the day.
Equipment Overview
NOTE: The time-remaining feature will not appear
on the Crew Dashboard until the dispenser has

consumption data.
NOTE: Keep in mind,
the % remaining and
time before changing
the ingredient
cartridge may vary


cartridge with 6%

a heavily-used

may last only a few
hours with 6%. To
optimize food costs,

be removed

SmartPAK™ (paperboard) cartridges are lightweight, recyclable, and
designed to optimize backroom storage space.
Inventory & Quick Replacements:
• Be prepared during rush periods! Place fast moving ingredient
cartridges in extra trays and stage near dispenser for fast
change outs.

i.e. 
• Always ensure ingredient cartridges are organized by “enjoy by

Storage Conditions:
• Avoid placing cartridges and plastic trays near any heat source,
standing water, or cleaning solutions.
Managing Ingredient Cartridges
Operational Basics
Many brand recipes require special microingredients
labeled AA, BB, and CC. Make sure you have plenty of
these three microingredients in-stock, because they
may move twice as fast as brand cartridges.
Cleaning Trays:
• Black plastic cartridge trays should be “hand washed” only using
approved food grade sanitizer. NEVER PLACE IN A DISHWASHER,
which may warp the trays over time.

Replacing ingredient cartridges
starts with knowing when a cartridge
is empty or unavailable.

This example
shows the Hi-C®
ingredient
cartridge is empty,
as a result the
grayed
out on the Freestyle®
touchscreen and will
say “Unavailable”
when selected.

View the amount of
ingredient remaining
within each cartridge
by accessing the
Crew Dashboard.
Reference the
percentage and time
remaining for each
ingredient. When a cartridge is
empty, the indicator box will
turn red and say “Sold Out.”
Priming an ingredient cartridge
simply removes any trapped air in
the line and ensures guests receive
a consistent, quality beverage.
After replacing an empty cartridge,
follow the on-screen messages
outlined below:

and press “Prime All” at the
bottom of the screen.
REMINDER: The prime process lasts
approximately 10 seconds. The process
should NEVER be interrupted.

When priming is complete,
press “Exit” at the upper
right of the screen. Follow
subsequent prompt on the
screen to return to the main
screen.

Remove the empty ingredient
cartridge from the plastic tray
and clean with approved food
grade sanitizer.
NOTE: Always remove and replace one
cartridge at a time to avoid inserting it
into the incorrect slot.

Using a clean sanitized towel,
dip in approved sanitizer solution
and wipe the probes.

Shake the new cartridge
vigorously. Open new cartridge


Remove (outer) white dust-cap
prior to placing cartridge into
plastic tray.

Place ingredient cartridge into
plastic tray and ensure plastic

aligns with tray.
6
Remove pull-ring seal prior to
inserting into the dispenser.
7
Insert cartridge into appropriate
slot.
8
Close the dispenser door and
follow on-screen instructions to
complete the cartridge prime
process (instructions on page 10).
If you’re sure that an ingredient cartridge is empty, follow these procedures
to replace it:

Managing Exterior
Ingredients
In addition to SmartPAK™ cartridges, Freestyle at
McDonald’s uses Bag-in-Box (BIB) ingredients
including sweeteners (HFCS & NNS) and Diet Coke®.
The Coca-Cola brand also pours from the McBulk
Coke Tank in the back of your restaurants.
NOTE: 
dispensers in the lobby as well as the ABS dispenser in
the drive thru.
Crew Dashboard
If one of these ingredients is unavailable, the
Crew Dashboard will display the product in a
red square with a ‘Sold Out’ alert.
Freestyle
®
and the
McBulk Coke Tank
Operational Basics
If the primary McBulk Coke Tank for
your restaurant is empty, then
Coca-Cola® will be unavailable on all
dispensers, including Freestyle.

your restaurant’s normal protocol

from one McBulk Coke Tank to
another.

should be blinking red. Click the
black button to reset it and wait

Changing the
Backroom BIB
Ingredients
Operational Basics
HFCS (High-Fructose Corn Syrup) and the
Diet Coke® brand are two ingredients
stored in BIBs in your backroom. These
BIBs are consumed quickly, so a primary
and a backup box are connected for both
ingredients. It is critical that these BIBs
are checked regularly and replaced as
soon as they are consumed.

At least twice a day, check if any
Diet Coke® and HFCS BIBs are
empty by lifting each box to check
its weight.

If a BIB is empty replace it.
(Follow the procedures as shown.)

If both the primary and backup BIBs
have been replaced, then it will be
necessary to return to the Crew
Dashboard on each Freestyle
dispenser and press the red “Sold
Out” alert to reset.
NOTE: HFCS and Diet Coke® indicators
display a green dot on the Crew Dashboard
when successfully reset.

BIB is empty by
checking its
weight.
Turn connector
counterclockwise
to loosen.(Use a
clean, sanitized
towel to catch any
spills.)
Remove
connector and
replace with
new HFCS
sweetener BIB.
Rinse the connector in clean,
warm water. Scrub using the
blunt end of the nozzle &
injector ring brush (#149326)
and Kay-5 sanitizer. Wait two
minutes and repeat with
clean sanitizer.
Open the box and pull out

Changing the
NNS (Under the
Counter)
NNS (Non-Nutritive Sweetener) is a BIB
ingredient located under the counter for
each Freestyle® dispenser. When NNS is
empty, the dispenser it serves will be
unable to pour diet or low calorie
beverages and those brands will display
as gray outs on the touch screen.

To ensure a BIB is empty, check the
Crew Dashboard to see if the NNS
indicator has turned red with a “Sold
Out” alert.

Open the cabinet under the counter
and replace the NNS using a new
box from your storage area.
(Follow procedures as shown.)

Once the new NNS box is installed,
return to the Crew Dashboard and
press the red “Sold Out” alert to
prime and reset.
NOTE: NNS indicator displays a green dot
when successfully reset.



Locate the nozzle tip. Use the
Nozzle Tip Wrench (Coke® part
#161294) and twist nozzle tip
counter-clockwise. Then pull
down to remove.
Place nozzle tip in approved sanitizer solution (Kay-5).
Shake nozzle tip when submerging to remove any air
bubbles and soak the nozzle tip for no more than 5 minutes.
CAUTION: DO NOT SOAK NOZZLE TIP OVERNIGHT!
NOTE: If using Kay-5, add 1 oz packets to 2.5 gallons of clean, warm water.
Scrub the nozzle tip at a
45° angle with approved
detergent cleanser using the
blunt end of the Nozzle
Tip & Injector Ring Brush
(Coke part #149326).
Scrub underneath the injector ring (area where the nozzle
connects) using the thick bristled nozzle brush at a 45°
angle and a clean sanitized towel. Focus on the small
holes where ingredient comes out. Allow to sit for 2
minutes. Then repeat with clean sanitizing solution.
Rinse nozzle tip in warm,
clean, drinkable water.
Allow the nozzle tip and injector ring area to .
Then use the Nozzle Tip Wrench to reinstall nozzle tip
and lock into place turning clockwise.
NOTE: Take extra care to ensure the nozzle tip is inserted completely
and locked into place. Be sure to clean the Nozzle Tip Wrench and
Brush when completed.
Follow these procedures to properly clean the Freestyle® at McDonald’s nozzle tip and injector ring. Always follow McDonald’s
sanitation policies, including expectations to wash hands and to use clean water and approved food grade sanitizer.

Two ways to lock the dispenser:
• Manual Setting
Select ‘Until I Unlock’ to lock the dispenser
until the manager passcode is entered.
• Time Setting
Tap the button next to ‘Lock Until’ and set a
time for the dispenser to unlock automatically.

Once the dispenser is locked, you may
unlock the user interface by using the
manager passcode (2653).
