Theself test checks the printer’s overall operability.
IMPORTANT!The printer should be loaded with
media,connected to AC power and turned off.
• Pressand hold the FEED button.
• Turnthe printer ON while holding the FEED button.
Releasethe FEED button when self test starts to
print.
• Turnthe printer off and on again to return to
normalprinting operation.
IMPORTANT!After performing a self test, the printer
isin hexidecimal dump mode and cannot print
normallyuntil you cycle the power.
5MAINTENANCE (With Every Media Roll)
SUPPLY CORE
Clean the print head A, drive roller B and the index sensors Cand
D witha soft, lint free cloth lightly saturated with 99%isopropyl
alcohol. Pressthe FEED button to clean all sides of theroller.
CAUTION! Incorrectlycleaning the printer will cause permanent
damageand void the printer’s warranty. Cognitive recommends using
acertified cleaning pen for all your printer’s cleaning requirements,P/N
60-14-00-0002.

Thermaltransfer printers can operate in direct
thermalor thermal transfer mode and must be set
tothe correct print mode for proper results.
AllAdvantage printers can use black bar, gap or
notchindexing.
Yourlabel printing software should provide the
meansto set these parameters. See your software
documentationfor details.
Refer to the CognitiveProgrammer’s Guide included
onthe CD ROM to set these parameters using the
CognitiveProgramming Language.
TheCD ROM includes Windows drivers, label design
softwareand additional information.

OPEN PRINTHEAD LOAD RIBBON (ThermalTransfer Only) LOAD MEDIA

Connect a parallel cable A, serial cable B
or ethernet cable C tothe back of the
printer.Connect the power cable Dto
theback of the printer and plug it in.
IMPORTANT!Use only the 19VAC power
supplyprovided with the printer.
Note:This guide shows a BT4 Ethernet
printer.Your printer may look different, but
theoperations are the same.
Openthe dust cover. Slide back the black latches to
releasethe print mechanism. Raise the mechanism to
prepareto load print media or ribbon and to clean
theprinter.
Placethe loaded media spindle in the printer with the
blackguide to the right.
Feedthe media under the open print mechanism.
Note:The media spindle should fit securely with the
blackguide pressed securely against the media roll.
Unwinda few inches of the new ribbon from the
supplycore. Pull gently on the supply core mount
flexiblearm and insert the ribbon supply roll. Lower the printmechanism and press down firmly to
securelatches.
Note:The latches click when properly closed. With the
mediaand ribbon loaded, the Ready light turns green.
Liftout the media spindle. Load the media
ontothe spindle, keeping the black media
guideto the right of the media roll.
IMPORTANT!The imaging surface must
faceup as it passes under the print
mechanism.
Turnthe ribbon takeup core A(see inset) to align theslotted end with the
takeupmount C. Gently pull the flexible arm out andsnap the takeup core
intoplace.
Note: Theprinter automatically takes up the slack in the ribbon.
