1. INTRODUCTION TO THE N9005 AND N9094
TheN9005andN9094handheldthermometersrepresent
aleapforwardinspecicationandperformanceandhavea
numberofnewfeatures.
BothinstrumentshavetheexistingComarkpremiumcasefor
ultimatestrengthanddurability.Thisoffersthehighestlevel
ofstrength,durabilityandprotectionagainstdustandwater
ingress.TheinstrumentsarecertiedtomeetIP68.Features
includeaclock,countdowntimer,timeralarms,highandlow
temperaturealarms,selectablesensortype,variableauto-off
anddatahold.
2. N9005 AND N9094 THERMOMETERS WITH
BIOCOTE® PROTECTION
BioCote®isasilverbasedanti-microbialagentthatis
impregnatedintotheinstrumentcaseduringmoulding.
BioCote®effectivelyinhibitsthefunction,growthand
reproductionofawiderangeofmicro-organismsandits
protectionisincreasinglyacceptedaspartofHACCP,due
diligenceandhealthandsafetyprocedurestoreducecross
contamination.BioCote®protectionlastsforthelifeofthe
instrument,becausetheagentispresentthroughoutthecase
plasticandcannotrubofforbewashedorleachedout.
Biocote®activeingredientsareregisteredwiththeUS
EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA).
AlthoughBioCote®inhibitsthegrowthofmicro-organismson
theinstrumentcase,itdoesnotprotectindividualsagainstsuch
harmfulorganismsorremovetheneedtomaintainthehighest
standardsofpersonalandproducthygieneandcleanliness.

4. CONNECTING PROBES TO THE
THERMOMETERS
TheN9094thermometerhasaLumbergsocketforprobe
connectionandofferaclassleadingchoicebetweenComark
thermistor,typeTthermocoupleortypeKthermocoupleprobes.
TheN9094thermometerwillautomaticallydetectthesensor
typeoftheprobeconnected.TheLCDwillthenindicate
thermistorprobesas“PST”,andtypeTorKthermocouple
probesas“T”or“K”.
TheN9005thermometerhasasub-miniatureconnectorfor
probeconectionandoffersthechoicebetweentypeTandtype
Kthermocoupleprobes.

5. SWITCHING ON AND OFF
The‘ON/OFF’buttononthekeypadisusedtoswitchonthe
thermometer.Afterashortpausethedisplaywillshowthe
currentmodeloftheinstrumentandwillthenreverttonormal
temperaturedisplay.Thecurrenttimeisalsopermanently
displayedontheLCD.
6. DATA HOLD
TheN9005andN9094thermometershaveadataholdfacility.If
the‘II’buttonispressedatanytimeduringnormaltemperature
mode,thecurrenttemperaturewillbeheldonthedisplay.To
releasepress‘II’.
7. COUNTDOWN TIMER
TheN9005andN9094thermometershaveacountdowntimer.
ThisfunctionisactivatedfromtheSetUpMenu–seesection
below,andcanbecalibratedinseconds/minutesorhours.
Pressingthecountdowntimerbuttonwillstartthisfunction.
Pressingthebuttonagainduringthecountdownperiodwillstop
thecount.Theinstrumentwillbeepfor30secondsattheend
ofacountdownperiodtoindicatetotheuserthatithasbeen
completed.
TheN9005andN9094thermometershaveaselectableauto-
switchofffeature.Thisissetto3minutesfromthefactory.
PleaserefertoSetUpMenuforinstructionsonchangingthis
setting.

9. SET UP MENU
TheN9005andN9094thermometershaveahiddenmenu
structurethatisusedtosetupanumberofparameterswithin
theinstrument.
TheSetUpMenucanbeenteredwhentheinstrumentis
switchedon.
Iftheinstrumentisalreadyon,itmustbeturnedoff.
Pressthecountdownbuttonandkeepthishelddownwhile
pressingtheonbuttontoswitchtheinstrumenton.Afterthe
thermometerhascompleteditsself-checks,itwillenterthe
menu.
N.B.AftereachmenuitemusetheON/OFFbuttontosaveand
movetothenextmenuitem.
Clockselectionistherstiteminthemenu:
Usethecountdowntimerbuttonandtheholdbuttonto
adjusttheclocktimeupordown.Theclockitselfisa12
hourclockwithsettingforAMorPM.Movingthrough12
noonwillchangetheclockfromAMtoPMandsoon.
Usethecountdowntimerbuttonandtheholdbutton
toselecttimeronoroff.Usetheholdandcountdown
timerbuttonstoscrollupanddowninsecondsupto5
minutesthenin1minuteintervalsupto24hours.
AfterenteringtheSCALEmenu,usethecountdown
timerbuttonandtheholdbuttontoscrollbetweenthe
availablescales.

Useeitherthecountdowntimerbuttonorthehold
buttontoscrollbetweenthermistorsensorspluseither
typeTorKthermocouples.Thedefaultisthermistor
andtypeT,withthelatterforprobeswithbrownorblue
leads.ThermistorandtypeKisavailableforprobes
witheitherredorgreenleads.
Usethecountdownbuttonandtheholdbuttontoselect
highalarmonoroff.Usetheholdandcountdowntimer
buttonstoscrollupordownindegreesCorFtothe
limitsofthechosenthermocoupletype.
Usethecountdownbuttonandtheholdbuttontoselect
lowalarmonoroff.Usetheholdandcountdowntimer
buttonstoscrollupordownindegreesCorFtothe
limitsofthechosenthermocoupletype.
Usethecountdowntimerbuttonandtheholdbutton
toscrollbetweentheavailableoptionsof3,10,30
minutes.
Usethecountdownbuttonandtheholdbuttontoselect
clockalarm1,onoroff.Useholdandcountdowntimer
buttonstosetthealarmtime-
12hourclock.Repeatforalarms2and3.
Usethecountdownandtheholdbuttontoselector
deselecttemperaturedisplayinhighresolution0.1°or
lowresolution1°.

10. BEFORE USING YOUR THERMOMETER
Beforeusingthethermometermakesureyouhavetheright
probeforthejob.Therearespecicprobesformeasuring
product,air,‘betweenpack’,surfaceanddeepfattemperatures.
Forpermanentinstallationthereisalsoachoiceof‘damped’
sensorsandfoodsimulants.
TheN9094iscompatiblewiththermistorandtypeTandK
thermocouplesensorstogiveultimatesystemaccuracyand
fastestspeedofresponse.Itiscompatiblewithallexisting
N9091/N9092probesandthermistortestcaps.Itselfcongures
totheparticularsensortype.Allyouhavetodoischoosethe
rightprobeforthejob.
TheN9005iscompatiblewithallindustrystandardtypeTand
typeKprobeswithsub-miniatureconnectors.
BoththeN9005andtheN9094canbetestedusingaC9040
thermocouplesimulator.(C9040KtypeKsub-miniature,
C9040TMtypeTsub-miniatureandC9040TLtypeTLumberg).
Beforemeasuringproducttemperaturesmakesurethatthe
probeisadequatelycleaned.Usebactericidalwipes(PW175T
-Tubof175probewipesorPW70T-tubof70probewipes)or
immersetheshaftinasuitablefoodqualitysterilisingsolution.
Remembertoreadtheinstructionscarefullyandallowthe
speciedtime.
Thermometersneedtobecheckedatregularintervals
toconrmthattheiraccuracyiswithinspecication.Itis
recommendedthatthermometersareregularlychecked(every
threemonths).TheN9094canbecheckedbycomparingthe
measuredreadingwithacertiedtestcap.
ComarktestcapsallowyoutocheckN9094instrument
accuracyatspecicpointstoimproveyourcondencein
themeasurement.Thesecanbeusedonafrequentbasisif
required.
N9005andN9094thermometersandtheirprobescanalsobe
regularlycheckedusingmeltingice.Simplyuseabeakerfull
oficecubes,addcoldwaterandstirforafewminutes.Insert
thepenetrationprobeandstiritforafurthertwominutes.The
thermometershouldthenreadbetween–0.5°Cand+0.5°C.
Theaccuracycanbecheckedagainstareferencethermometer
suchastheKM20REF.Makesureyouusesufcienticecubes
andstirlongenoughforthewatertocooldownproperly.

Shouldyouwishtochecktheaccuracyofyourthermometer
atothertemperaturesitismoredifcultwithoutsophisticated
equipment.
Ifyouintendtouseyourthermometertocheckotherequipment
orprocessesaspartofaBS5750/ISO9000procedureorto
checkcompliancewithothercodesofpractice,youmayrequire
eitherUKASorNationalStandardscertication.Comarkcan
offercalibrationtobothstandards.PleasecontactourUKAS
accreditedlaboratoryforfurtherdetails.
11. TAKING A TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT
Positiontheprobeintheplaceyouwishtotakethe
measurementandrecordareadingwhenthetemperaturehas
stabilised.
Note: Donotexposethermistorprobestotemperaturesoutside
therange–80°Cto+150°Candavoidthermallyshocking
probesbyrapidheatingorcooling.
12. PROBE SELECTION
Penetration Probes
Forproducttemperaturesusethestainlesssteel‘penetration’
probe.Inserttheprobeatleast25mmintotheproductor
preferablytothecentreoftheproduct.Allowsufcienttime
forthereadingtostabilise.Typicallyyouwillneedtowait30
secondsinaliquidandupto2minutesinadrypowder.Try
someexperimentsyourself.
Note:Toavoidcrosscontaminationproperlycleanyourprobe
aftereachmeasurement.

Fast Air Probe
Forairtemperaturesalwaysusethefastresponseairprobes.
Trytoplacetheprobeinamovingairow,orifyoucanwave
theprobearoundtospeeduptheresponse.(Stillairisavery
goodthermalinsulatorsoinaclosedrefrigeratoryoumayneed
towaitminutesforthereadingstonallystabilise).Order:

Deep Fat Probe
Fortemperaturemeasurementindeepfatfryers.Thisprobeis
madefromaveryexiblematerialthatcanbereshapedtime
andtimeagain.Cranktheshaftoftheprobesothatthefat
temperaturecanbemeasuredwithoutyourhandneedingtobe
abovethefatitself.Nevertakethemeasurementwithyourhand
directlyabovethefat.Takeadequateprecautions.Remember
theprobewillbeveryhotonwithdrawalfromthefat.Order:

13. CARE OF THE THERMOMETER
WARNING
TheN9005andN9094thermometersaredustandwaterproof
asstatedinthespecicationsandwillwithstandharsh
environments.Useadampclothorwarmsoapywaterto
removedepositsandpreventthemfromhardeningorbecoming
sticky.Donotusesolvent-basedcleanersormethylatedspirits,
etc.
Caution:Donotplaceanythermometerinadishwasher.

Inamicrowaveoven…thedoorwillnotcloseproperlyandthe
microwaveradiationcoulddamagethethermometerandoven

brittle.Itisjustaseffectivetouseadampclothandnormal

crosschecksintoyoureverydayoperationssothatpotential
problemsareimmediatelyidentied.
Keepyourinstrumentandprobeclean.
Usethecorrectprobefortheparticularjob.
Removethebatteryifyouarestoringyourinstrumentforlong
periods.
Takecarewheninsertingthepenetrationprobeintohard
substances.Thesharppointcaneasilypenetrateesh.
keeprecordsofthetemperaturesyouhavemeasured.Itmay
provideusefulevidenceifthereiseveraproblem.

14. SEALED FOR LIFE BATTERY
TheN9005andN9094havealonglifeLithiumcelltted
insidethesealedbatterycompartmentonthereverseofthe
instrument.Thisisdesignedtolastupto10yearsinnormal
usage.HowevershouldthesymbolBATappearsonthedisplay
whenthebatteryvoltagehasreduced.Batteryreplacement
isrecommendedatthistime.Thiscanonlybecarriedoutby
ComarkorApprovedDistributorsopleasereturntheinstrument
asappropriateforbatteryreplacement.
Donotattempttochangethebatteryyourselfasthiswillresult
indamagetotheinstrumentandalossofwaterproofrating.
