USER'S GUIDESTATEMENT
Thisequipmentgenerates andusesradiofrequency energy. Ifitis
notproperlyinstalledandused instrict accordance with the manu-
facturer's instructions,thisequipmentmay interfere with radioand
television reception. This machinehasbeen tested andfound to
comply with the limitsfor a Class B computing device inaccordance
with the specifications inSubpartJ of Part15of FCCRules, which
aredesigned to provide reasonable protection againstsuch interfer-
ence ina residentialinstallation.Ifyou suspect interference, you can
test thisequipment byturning itoff andon. Ifyou determine that
there isinterference with radioor television reception,try oneor
moreofthe following measures to correct it:
•reorient the receiving antenna
•move the computer andthis monitoraway from the receiver that is
picking upinterference
•change the relative positionsof the computer equipmentandthe
receiver
•plugthe computer andthis monitor into a different outlet sothat
the computer andthe receiver areondifferent branch circuits.

sured)thathasboth40-columnfullcolorandmonochromedisplay
capability.With the flickofa switch, you canusethe 1802for full-
colorvideodisplayorasa single-colormonochromemonitorappro-
priatefora homebusinesscomputer.The1802canbeusedwith the
Commodore64,Commodore64C,Commodore128,Commodore
Plus/4,andCommodore 16computers.Youcanalsousethe 1802to

CONNECTINGTHE MONITORTO A COMPUTER
Therearesixsockets on the rearpanelof the 1802monitorwhich
accommodate the three types ofconnections neededfor each oper-
atingmode(composite, separated chroma/luma andmonochrome).
The operatingmodeisdetermined bythe positionof a switch on the
front ofthe monitor(theVIDEO MODEswitch), butthe connection
cablefrom your computer to themonitormustbepluggedinto the
propersockets for the mode you select to work.
The cablethatcomes with your monitorisaneight-pjn cable de-
signedfor connecting a separate chroma/luma display."'Eight-pin'
refers to the numberofmetal'pins'onthe insideofthe largerround
endofthe cable.Thiscablealso hasthree different colored RCA-
type phonoplugson the other end.These plugsare color-coded for
thecorrect sockets they pluginto.
Ifyou intendto connect eithercomposite or monochrome, you will
needa different cable.Composite mode,which canbeusedto
displaythe picturefrom a television tuner or VCR, needsa cable with
onlytwo phonoplugsto connect, or you canusemulti-purposemale
phonopatchcables.Toconnect monochrome properly, you may

alsoneed a specialized cable, with a phono plug andanend that
matches the computer's video output port. Forexample, the Commo-
dore 128would usea cable with a nine-pin male DB-9 connector.
Thesecablesare available atcomputer andtelevision dealers.
Before you connect the cable,turn off the power to bothyour com-
puterandthe monitor.
The monitor connection cable hasthree different-colored plugson
oneend anda larger rounded end (DIN connector).
The large rounded endof the cable isplugged into the VIDEO port in
the rear ofyour computer. (See your computer user's manualifyou
don't knowwhere this port islocated.) You will bepluggingthe phono
plugson the other end of thiscable into three of the jacks on the rear
panelofthe monitor. Which jacks you insert the plugs intodepends
onthe operating modeinwhich you planto usethe monitor. The rear
panelof the monitorlooks likethis:

Toconnect the monitor for SEPARATED CHROMA/LUMA
operation:
1.Plugthe rounded endwith eightpinsinside (the larger endofthe
cable)intothe VIDEO connector port on your computer. Make
sure the small dent on the metal end of the cable that you plug
into the computer isfacing up,andpush the cable end firmly in.
2.Plugthe three plugends of the cable intothe LUMA, CHROMA
andAUDIO IIjacks on the backof the monitor. The plugs andthe
jacks arecolor-coded:
the white output pluggoes intothe AUDIO IIjack (WHITE) on
the monitor.
the yellow outputpluggoesintothe LUMA jack (YELLOW).
thered output pluggoes intothe CHROMA jack (RED).

3.Set the VIDEO MODESWITCH toSEP(for separated lumaand
chroma) for a sharp color 40-column picture display.

Toconnectthe monitor for COMPOSITEdisplay, you'll need
either a five-pin cable with two plugends (insteadof three) or RF
cables to hook upcomposite from a computer, VCR or TV tuner.
1.Plugthe end of the monitor cable with five pins intothe VIDEO (or
video output) porton computer.
2.Insertthe two plugends of the cable intothe two sockets on the
toprow of the panelon the backof the monitor, asshown:
•the white output pluggoes intothe AUDIO I jack (WHITE) on
the monitor.
•thered outputpluggoesintotheVIDEOjack (YELLOW).

Ifyou're usingphono patchcables, connect onefrom video output of
thesource to the VIDEO jack of the monitor, andanother from audio
outputof the source to the AUDIO I jack, asthisdiagram shows.
3.Setthe VIDEO MODESWITCH toCOMP (for composite) to view
computer or video output ina 40-column color picture display.
Toconnect the monitor for MONOCHROME display:
Remember thatyou need a special cablewith the correct plugfor
your computer's output port on one endandeither one or two jacks
on the other end(one formonochrome andpossibly one for audio).
The cable isavailablefrom your computer dealer.
1.Plugthe single, larger endofthe cableintothe VIDEO port on
your computer.
2.Insertthe two plugends of the cable intothe MONO andAUDIO II
jacks on the backof the monitor, asshown:
•the audiooutput pluggoes intothe AUDIO IIjack (WHITE)on
the monitor.
•the video output plug goes intothe MONOCHROME jack.

3.Set the VIDEO MODE SWITCH to MONO for a displayfeaturing
green letters ona blackbackground,whichlessenseyestrain,
TURNING ON YOUR MONITOR
After connecting your monitor to the computer andinserting the
three-pronged electrical plug intoa power outlet, you are ready to
turn on your monitor. Follow these simple steps:
1.Turn the monitor on bypushing inthe power switch. The POWER
INDICATOR LIGHT on the front of the power switch monitor
shows you when the power ison.
Later,when you're ready to turn the power off,press the power
buttonagain.The buttonwill pop backout andthe power lightwill
gooff.
2.Turn your computer on.You cantellthat both the monitor andthe
computerareworking correctlywhen themonitordisplaysa power-
upmessage.
Different computers displayotheropeningmessages. Ifyou don't
know what message to expect, see your computer's user manual.

USINGTHE MONITORPICTURECONTROLS
You canadjustyour monitor'spicturewith the manualcontrol knobs
locatedbehindthe panelbeneaththe monitorscreen. The panel
opens from the top;just flip open the cover bypullingthe tab atthe
topofthepanel.
VIDEO MODESWITCH
As mentionedearlier,you usethisswitch to select the displaymode
ofthe monitor.Theswitch canbesetatCOMP (composite), SEP
(separatedchroma/luma)or MONO(monochrome).
TINTCONTROL
Turn thisknobtothe leftto addmore red andtothe righttoincrease
thegreen shading.Thenormalsetting isatthe center.

COLOR CONTROL
Turn thisknobtotheleftto tonecolorsdown, andto therightto
brightencolors.Thenormalsettingisatthecenter.
BRIGHTNESSCONTROL
Turnthisknobtotherightto increasebrightnessortothe leftto make
thescreenpicturedarker.Thenormalsettingisatthecenter.
CONTRAST CONTROL
Turnthisknobtothe rightto increasecontrast.Thenormalsettingis
atthecenter.
HORIZONTALPOSITIONCONTROL
You needto usea screwdrivertoadjustthissetting.Turn to theright
tomovethe centerofthe pictureto theleft.Turn left to shiftthe
centerofthe pictureto theright.
VERTICALHOLDCONTROL
Thisrequiresa screwdrivertoadjustthesetting.Turn thisknobto
stopverticalrollingofthepicture.
VERTICALHEIGHTCONTROL
Adjustthiswitha screwdriverto increaseordecreasethe vertical
heightofthepicture.
VOLUMECONTROL
Turnthisknobto therightto increasesoundvolumeandto theleftto
decreasethevolume.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Thisunithasbeenengineered andmanufactured toassureyour
personalsafety. Butimproperusecan resultinpotentialelectri-
calshockorfire hazards. Inorder notto defeat the safeguards
incorporatedinthismonitor,observe the following basicrulesfor its
installation,useandservicing.Follow allwarnings andinstructions
marked on your video monitor.
INSTALLATION
1.Your setisequippedwith a three-pronged 120-voltAC lineplug.
Thissafety feature allows the plugtofit intothe power outlet only
one way. Ifitisnecessary tousea 3-prong to 2-prong plug
adapter, makesure the adapterisproperly groundedaccording
to itsinstructions.
2.Operate the setonlyfrom a power source asindicated on the set
orrefer to the user's manualfor thisinformation. Ifyou are not
sure of the type of power supply to your home,consult your
dealeror localpower company.
3.Overloaded AC outlets andextension cords aredangerous. So
are frayed power cords andbroken plugs.They mayresultina
shock or fire hazard.Callyour service technicianfor replace-
ment.
4.Donotallow anything torestor rollover the power cord,anddo
notplacethe setwhere the power cord issubjectto traffic or
abuse.Thismay result ina shockor fire hazard.
5.Donotusethismonitor nearwater — for example, neara
bathtub,washbowl, kitchen sink, laundrytub, ina wet basement,
or neara swimming pool,etc.
6.Setsare provided with ventilationopeningsinthe cabinetto
allowheatgenerated duringoperation to bereleased.Ifthese
openingsare blocked, heatbuiltupwithin the set cancause
failures which mayresultina fire hazard.
Therefore:
•Neverblockthe bottomventilationslotsbyplacingitona bed,
sofa, rug, etc.

•Neverplacea setina 'built-in'enclosure unlessproper venti-
lationisprovided.
•Nevercover the openingswith cloth or other material.
•Neverplacethe setnearor overa radiatoror heatregister.
7.Toavoidpersonalinjury:
•Donotplacea setona slopingshelf unlessproperly secured.
•Useonlya cartorstandrecommended bythe manufacturer.
•Donottry to rolla cartwith small casters across thresholds or
deep-pilecarpets.
•Wall- andshelf-mounted installationsshouldusefactory ap-
proved instructions.
USE
8.Always turn the setoff ifitisnecessary to leavethe room for
more than a shortperiod of time.Never leave a set on when
leaving the house.A malfunction mayresultina fire hazard.
9.Cautionchildren aboutdropping or pushingobjects intothe set's
cabinet openings.Some internal partscarry hazardous voltages
andcontact can result ina fire or electrical shock.
10.Unplugthe set from the wall outlet before cleaningthe face of
the picture tube. Usea slightlydamp(notwet) cloth.Donotuse
anaerosol directly on the picture tube since itmayoverspray
andcause electrical shock.
11.Never addaccessories to a set that hasnotbeen designed for
this purpose. Such additions maycreate anelectrical shock
hazard.
12.Foraddedprotection of the set duringanelectrical storm or
when the setisto beleft unattendedfor anextended period of
time, unplugitfrom the wall outlet. This will prevent shockand
fire hazards dueto lightningor power-line surges.
13.Donotbringmagneticdevices suchasmagnets or motors near
the picture tube. They may havea negative effect on the color
purityof the picture.
14.Sometimes you may feel staticelectricity when you touch the
surface of the picture tube. This isnormal for any TV setor
monitorand isharmless to the humanbody.

SERVICE
15.Unplugthe setfrom the wall outletandreferservicingto quali-
fied servicepersonnelunderthefollowing conditions:
A. When thepowercord orplugisdamagedorfrayed.
B.Ifliquidhasbeenspilledintotheset.
C.Ifthesethasbeenexposedto rainor water.
D.Ifthesetdoesnotoperatenormallybyfollowing the operat-
inginstructions.Adjust onlythosecontrolsthatarecovered
inthe operatinginstructions,asimproperadjustmentofother
controls mayresultindamage andwilloften requireexten-
sive work bya qualifiedtechnicianto restorethesetto
normaloperation.
E.Ifthe sethasbeendroppedorthe cabinethasbeenda-
maged.
F.When thesetexhibitsa distinctchangeinperformance—this
indicatesa needfor servicing.
G.Ifsnappingor poppingfrom themonitoriscontinuousor
frequent duringoperation.Itisnormalfor somesetsto make
occasionalsnappingorpoppingsounds,particularlywhen
beingturnedonoroff.
16.Donotattemptto service thismonitoryourself, asopeningor
removingcovers mayexposeyou to dangerousvoltageorother
hazards.Dangeroushighvoltageispresentevenwhen the
monitorisunplugged.Refer allservicingto qualifiedservice
personnel.Attemptingto servicethemonitoryourselfwillvoid
themanufacturer'swarranty.
17.When replacementpartsarerequired,havethe service techni-
cianverify inwriting thatthe replacementsheusedhavethe
samesafety characteristicsastheoriginalparts.Useofmanu-
facturer's specifiedreplacementscanpreventfire, shockor
otherhazards.
18.Uponcompletionofanyservice orrepairsto theset,pleaseask
the service technicianto perform thesafety checkdescribedin
themanufacturer'sserviceliterature.
19.Whenavideomonitorreachesthe endofitsusefullife,improper
disposalcouldresultina picturetubeimplosion.Ask a qualified
service techniciantodisposeofthe set.
