IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS - This document contains important
instructions for the CMC Smoke Sensor kit that should be followed
during installation.
These instructions serve as an outline to assist qualified personnel with
the installation of the smoke sensor option for the Compaq Console
Management Controller (CMC).
This sensor receives 24VDC power from the CMC and provides an
alarm signal output. This alarm is activated if smoke is detected or if the
fan speed falls out of range.
This smoke sensor is used with certified information technology
equipment.
Please refer to the Important Safety Information (guide included with
this option kit) before installing this product.

2. Install a tube coupling on a section of the sampling tube. Insert the
coupling into the smoke sensor. Position the holes in the tube to face
the equipment in the rack. Hand tighten the connection of the coupling
and smoke sensor.
3. Extend the length of the sampling tube until the tube reaches the bottom
of the door, by using couplings.
4. Insert the plastic end cap on the bottom of the tube to secure the
bracket to the end of the tube
3
.
5. Align the bottom tube
3
vertically with the sensor
1
.
6. Insert a screw
4
(with washer) through the hole in the door and
fasten it to the tube bracket
3
using a nut.
7. Route the sensor cable through the rack.
8. Attach the cable to the rack with the stick-on cable retention clips
or tie wraps included in the CMC basic unit.
9. Connect the cable to the sensor
1
.
IMPORTANT: For the smoke sensor to be effective, the sampling tube must be placed in
the path of the exhaust air from the equipment within the rack.
Connecting the Smoke Sensor to the CMC
1
1. Power off the CMC, then connect the smoke sensor cable to port
1
as
shown below.
2. Power on the CMC. The CMC will automatically recognize the smoke
sensor. The fan in the smoke sensor will turn on.
Maintenance
Keep the sampling tube and holes clean and clear of dust and debris at all
times.
Check the smoke sensor at least once per year. Use smoke testing supplies
to check and verify proper unit functionality.
Compaq recommends replacing the smoke sensor after the sensor detects
smoke. Contact an authorized Compaq representative for ordering details.
Configure the alert handling for the smoke sensor using the Compaq
Intelligent Rack Manager Lite software provided with the CMC kit (see
the Console Management Controller User Guide).
Configuring the Software
Operation
Smoke passing by the sampling tube will be drawn into the optical smoke
sensor by the fan. The smoke sensor can take up to 20 seconds to trigger
an alarm to the CMC. The sampling tube must be placed in the path of
the exhaust air from the rack equipment.
If smoke is detected, the sensor fan will automatically shut off. After the
smoke has cleared, the sensor can be reset by pressing the RESET button
for three seconds.
The sensor will not detect smoke if the fan stops running or runs too
slowly. A fan fault like this will also trigger a smoke alarm. A smoke
alarm should be investigated to determine whether smoke is present or a
fan fault occurred.
Installation is complete.
