 DO NOT modify the unit electrically or mechanically without Corning’s
written approval as personal injury or product damage may occur.
5.0 Heating Operation and Controls
The Corning® Scholar™ 170 Hot Plate will not heat when the dial setting is
turned to the “OFF” position. To operate the unit turn the dial until the dial
indicator lines up with the desired dial setting. The following table details
approximate temperatures for various dial settings.

NOTE: Temperatures shown are approximate “no load” values. Variables
affecting actual temperature may include environment conditions, dial
setting position, and top loading.
6.0 Stirring Operation and Controls
The Corning Scholar 171 Stirrer will not stir when the dial setting is turned
to the “OFF” position. To operate the unit, turn the dial until the dial indica-
tor lines up with the desired dial setting. The stir range is 100 to 1,600 rpm.
7.0 Inspection Procedure
 Look for etching or chipping on top plate. If any of these conditions are
present, discontinue use and contact Corning for additional instructions.
 Look for damaged power cord. If the cord is damaged, do not modify the
grounded power plug to avoid shock hazard or any other unit component.
Service should always be done by qualified technicians using Corning
instructions. Contact Corning for additional instructions.

Hot surface indicator, surfaces on this unit may be hot to
the touch.
This unit may cause the emission of toxic gasses due to
heating of certain materials.

3.0 Operating Conditions
The Corning Scholar is designed to be safe when used under the following
conditions:
 Indoor use
 Altitude up to 2,000 meters
 Temperature of 0°C to 40°C
 Maximum relative humidity of 80% for temperatures up to 31°C decreasing
linearly to 50% relative humidity at 40°C.
 Position at least 12” from walls, 48” from ceiling, and 12” between hot
plates if using multiple units.
 Main supply voltage fluctuations not to exceed ±10% of the nominal voltage.
 Installation Category II
 Pollution Degree 2
4.0 Warnings
 DO NOT immerse unit for cleaning.
 DO NOT remove or modify ground power plug. Use only properly grounded
outlets to avoid shock hazard.
 DO NOT use insulating materials, such as a sand bath, on top of this
product when heating.
 USE CAUTION when heating volatile materials, top surface and element
can reach the “Flash Point” temperature of many chemicals.

12.0 Warranty
Corning Incorporated (Corning) warrants that this product will be free
from defects in material and workmanship for a period of (1) year from
date of purchase. CORNING DISCLAIMS ALL OTHER WARRANTIES WHETHER
EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY OR OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. Corning’s
sole obligation shall be to repair or replace, at its option, any product or
part thereof that proves defective in material or workmanship within the
warranty period, provided the purchaser notifies Corning of any such defect.
Corning is not liable for any incidental or consequential damages, commer-
cial loss or any other damages from the use of this product.
This warranty is valid only if the product is used for its intended purpose
and within the guidelines specified in the supplied instruction manual.
This warranty does not cover damage caused by accident, neglect, misuse,
improper service, natural forces, or other causes not arising from defects
in original material or workmanship. This warranty does not cover motor
brushes, fuses, light bulbs, batteries, or damage to paint or finish. Claims for
transit damage should be filed with the transportation carrier.

a defect in material or workmanship, contact Corning Customer Service at

Corning’s Customer Service team will help arrange local service where avail-
able, coordinate a return authorization number, or provide a return authori-
zation number and shipping instructions. Products received without proper
authorization will be returned. All items returned for service should be sent
postage prepaid in the original packaging or other suitable carton, padded
to avoid damage. Corning will not be responsible for damage incurred by
improper packaging. Corning may elect for onsite service for larger equipment.
Some states do not allow limitation on the length of implied warranties
or the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages. This
warranty gives you specific legal rights. You may have other rights which
vary from state to state.
No individual may accept for, or on behalf of Corning, any other obligation
of liability, or extend the period of this warranty.

8.0 Preventive Maintenance
 Disconnect power by unplugging unit before performing any maintenance
or service.
 Always use a grounded power outlet.
 Keep top surface clean and dry. Unplug unit and use non-abrasive
cleaner. Contact Corning if there is any doubt about the compatibility of
decontamination or cleaning agents.
 Clean spills promptly. If liquid or solid material gets inside the product,
immediately disconnect power to the product, use non-abrasive cleaner,
and discontinue use. Contact Corning for additional instructions regarding
interior spills.

United States), or Contact your local Corning sales office.
Before returning any unit for service, a Return Authorization (RA) number
must first be obtained. Equipment sent in without our prior authorization
will be returned at the customer’s expense. When returning a unit to
Corning for service, it should be sent in the original packaging. If this is not
possible, be sure that the unit is sufficiently packed. Any damage resulting
from improper packaging is the responsibility of the customer. A written
explanation should accompany the unit along with the RA number.
11.0 Warranty Registration
Your purchase of this product must be registered with Corning in order
for your warranty to be in effect. Please register your warranty online at
