CAUTION Safety Precautions
To Prevent Accidents
1. Stop the engine whenever you leave the equipment, even for a moment. Make sure blades and
all moving parts have stopped, disconnect the spark plug wire from the plug and keep wire
away from plug to prevent accidental starting before cleaning, making any adjustments, in--
specting or repairing.
2. Check fuel before each using. Do not fill gasol i ne tank when engine is running or wh ile eng ine
is hot. Wipe off any sp ill ed gasoline before starting engine· . gasoline is high ly flamm able·
always handle with care.
3, Do not run engine indoors, exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide which is odorless and
d ead ly poison. If for some r eason engine must be run indoors, open all doors and windows to
provide sufficient ventilation.
4. For eng ines equipped with a No Pull Starter, be sure and read the handling an d safety pr ecau-
tions in your engine manual.
5. Disengage self propelling unit or drive clutch on units so equ ipp ed before sta rting engine _. Keep
guards in place.
6. Don't change governor settings or overspeed the eng ine . The governor controls the speed and
protect the engine from damaging,
excessive speeds. Excessive speeds are dangerous.
7. Don 't store equipme nt with fuel in the tank inside a buildi ng where fumes may r each an
open flame or spark. Let the engine cool before storing in any enclosure.
S. Never leave engine running unattended.
9. Keep all screws, nuts and bolts tight to be sure equipment is in safe operat ing condition. Keep
equipment clean at all times.
10. If your equipment should start vibrating, stop the engine and check for damage or loo se
parts. Vibration generally is a warning of trouble.

ship. When properly used, cared for, and maintained, we w ill replace at our option and in -
stall, wi thout cost to you, for a period of one (1) year from date of sa le, any part which
proves,
upon our examination, to be defective under normal use.
This guar
antee does not cover adju stments to carburetors, ignition points , replacement
of spark plugs, cleaning, sharpening of blades, or any service or adjustment made necessa ry
by normal use and wear nor does it cover any failures which are a result of improper
care, negligence, abuse, failure to lubricate properly or use of contaminated fuels or
lubricants.
Damage resulting from strik ing solid or foreign objects (rocks, tree roots, sprinkler heads,
ir on pipe, walk edge, etc,) is not covered by th is guarantee.
Equipment used for rental or comm ercial p urp oses is guaranteed on ly for thirty (30)

Al ways use care when operating mechanical or powered equipment. Keep clear of
moving parts, belts or chains. Do not work on equipment with the engine running.
Avoid striking
or running into solid objects or debris in the area to be worked. Clear
the area of foreign objects such as: st ick s, stones, wire, etc. Keep your equipment
clean and check for loose bolts, nuts and fasteners. Check the engine oil regularly
and change it as ou tlined in your engine manual.

mark on dip st ick. Be sure dip stick is
screwed in and that engi ne is level. Oil
copacity is 2 V:! pints .
2. U se S.A.E. No . 30 MS, SC, SD or SE oi l. If not
avai labl e, use Mu lti-Grade oil (S.A.E. 10W - 3OW) MS,
SC, SD or SE. (Note: Be low 3:zO F use 10W MS. SC,
SD or SE.
3. Change ojl after f ir st 2 hours of oper ation and
every 25 operating hours thereafter. Check oi l every
aoperati ng ho u rs.
TO START ENGINE
(NOTE: Key, chok e, t hrottl e located on dashboar d
of tract or)
Open g0501 ine shut-off valve loco ted under
gas tonk .
o Position throttle to about holf-throttle.
o Pull choke all the way out.
Turn key all the way in clockwise direction.
After engine Si or t s, push choke lever in
sl owly. (If engine is worm, do not choke to
start .)
TO STOP ENGINE

SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS
To obtain long e st life and troubl e fr ee use of y our
engin e, certain normal maint e nanc e must be p er-
formed as outlin ed belo w:
Di s conn e ct s por k plug wire at spark pl ug
bef ore perfo r ming any ma i ntenance to pre-
vent occidental sta r ting of engine.
CHANGE OIL
Change oil in engine crankcase after first
two hours of operation. Unscrew oil drain
plug located on end of engine bose. (See
F;g . II.
Replace o il drain plug and refill engine
c rankcase with oil as per instructions in
Fig. 1.
Thereafter check oi I level often, before
each u si ng, at each eight hours of opera tion
a nd add o il if necessary to bring up to
proper level. (See Fig. 1)
Change oil at each 25 hours of opera ti on .
PROPER FUEL
OJ Use a good grade of fresh CLEAN Regular
gasoline.
CL EAN ENGINE
Wipe off all sp ill ed fuel and oil.
Keep engine clean of foreign matter at all
times . Be sure air fins on Cylinder ar~
kept clean to permit proper ventilation.
Remember, this is on air coaled engine
and free air fl ow is important for proper
engine performance and li fe.

SERVICE AIR CLEANER
Your engine is equipped with a dry type air
cleoner and must be pe ri odically r em oved and
cleaned to maintain maximum engin e pe rform-
ance.
To clean, loosen thumb screw thot holds ai r filter
cover to bracket. Lift cover from brac ke t, t he n
proceed as follows:
Pull element from brocket.
T op element l ightly to dislodge accumulat-
ed dirt and brush dirt from el eme nt . Do
not wash element in gasoline or other sol·
vent,
Cl ean the cover and br ocket wi th gasoline
or any solvent.
Reassemble.
(0) Insert element on bracket.
(b) Place cover on bracket and t ighten
thumb screw.
It is recommended that a new air cleaner
element be purchased and installed at be-
ginning of each mowing season. This is
your best pro t ection agains t excessive en-
gine wear .
NEVER RUN YOUR ENGINE WITHOUT AIR
CLEANER COMPLETELY ASSEMBLED .
CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT
Do not make unnecessary adjus tments. Fac-
tory settinAs are correc t for most appl i cat i ons .
If lIdjustments are needed pr oceed as follows:
After making initial adjustments as shown
below (Fig. 3) star t engine.
Turn "High Speed Adjusting Needle" for-
ward or bock Va turn at a time un t il engine
runs smoothly. If engine tends to stoll when
unit is in use open needle % turn.
Hold throttle l ever in idle position.
Turn " I dle Adjusting Need l e" forward or
bock ~u turn at a time until e ngine runs
smoothly.
Allow several seconds between each adjus t·
ment for engine carburetor to r eact to t he
new setling.

CHECK SPARK PLUG
Remove t he spark plug eac h ti me you
change oi l and inspect it.
a. The electrodes should be kept dean
and free of corba n. The presence of
carbon or excess oil will great ly deter
proper engine performance.
b. If possible, check the spark plug gop
(area betwee n electrodes) using a wire
feeler gouge. This specification should
be .030 .
If you need a new Spark Plug refer to the
por ts list for the proper replacement Spark
Plug.
Before installing Spark Plug coot threads
lightly with Graphi te Gre ase if possible to
i nsu re easy removal n ext time t he Spa rk
Plug n eeds in spec tion.

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
If you are going to store your engine for any
length of time (30 days or longer or at the
end
of the season) you must:
a DRAIN THE GAS TANK.
b.
c.
DRAIN THE CARBURETOR byallow·
ing engine to run out of gas. Gasoline
left in your engine will leave gum de -
posits in the carburetor and gas tank.
This makes fuel system inoperative and
will result in hard or non-starting of the
engine.
CLEAN ENGINE of all foreign maner .
d. LUBRICATE CYLINDER by removing
the spark plug and pouring one ounce of
clean lubricating oil through the spark
pl ug hole into the cylinder. Crank the
engine slowly
to spread oil and replace
Spark Plug.

Just as your automobile needs professional
mechanical maintenance from time to time,
so does your air cooled engine. Cleaning and
adjusting of
the Carburetor and periodic
replacement of the Spark Plug and Ignition
Points is made necessary by NORMAL use.
Professional Air Cooled Engine Service is as
close as
your nearest Sears Store.
A yearly check·up or tune-up by Sears is a
good idea
to avoid breakdowns or delay....
do it
at the end of the season, then you're
ready for the next. We even prepare it for
storage for you.

The engine won't start or is hard to stort. What con I do?
You're not out of gas are you? It happens sometimes.
Is the spark plug wire attached to the plug?
Check the spark plug porceloin, maybe it is crocked.
The spark plug may be fouled; cleon the electrodes and reset the plug gop; instructions or.
under "CHECK SPARK PLUG" in th is manual.
Is the gas line obstructed? Remove fuel line at carburetor and check 'or obstruction. Drain
gos
tank and replace with cleon, fresh gasoline.
Is the fuel cleon? You didn't use a dirty or rusty gas can did you? If you did, It might be
better to let Sears check the fuel system and carburetor.
Stole gas thot has set oround and lost its strength Is a trouble maker ... hard start i ng and
loss of power results.
Maybe there is woter in the gos. Condensation in the tonk or in your gos con sometimes hoppens.
Carburetor could be out of adjustment .. . check "CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT" in manua l.
Maybe you over-choked and flooded 'ttle engine. Put throttle in run or fast position and cronk
several times
to cleor out the excess gos.
Your throttle control may be set so that it does not fully close the choke.
Dirty or plugged oir cleoner? See "SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS" in this manual.
My engine misses or locks. power under load. Whot might couse this'
Your throttle control could be set too close to choke position and flooding the engine.
Spark plug? See under "HARD TO START ". Maybe it needs cleaning or replacing.
Water in the fuel does not help the engine to run very good and robs It of power.

Improper carburetor adjustment . Check "CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT" in this manuot
Got enough 011 in crankcase? Low oil level or dirty oil makes trouble.
A partially plugged ajr cleoner will restrict the air flow to the corburetor and reduce power.
See manual. The et'lQine breathes through the oir cleaner.
Don't
put oil in the gas . It reduces the efficiency of the engine.
The engine seems to overheat. Whot should I do?
Be sure you hove plenty of oil in the eranke ase and that it is cleon. When did you change lost?
Check the 011 level in your crankcase . Low oil level will couse overheating.
Sometimes the muffler
can get plugged. This caU5e$ bock pressure, over-heating ond
loss of power.
