Using a Modem to Connect Remotely to A CDVS-
5000 Series DVR
I. Setting Up Crest CDVS-5000 Series DVR
1. Connect modem to unit and install the modems software drivers.
The first step in using a modem to connect to a DVR is to set up the modem. If you purchased the
modem from Crest Electronics at the time of purchasing the DVR then the modem should already be set
up and ready for use. If you purchased the modem from Crest Electronics after you purchased the DVR
you will need to follow the setup instructions that came with your modem. After successfully installing
your modem follow the setup below to set up your DVR to accept incoming calls from a remote ma-
chine using our Center (Remote) software.
2. Setup Windows to accept incoming calls.
A. If the DVR software is running click exit and restart in windows mode.
B: Click Restart in Windows Mode. If prompted to log on with another user click yes and type in Ad-
ministrator for user name and the administrators password.

C: From the windows desktop click start settings, network and dial up connections.
D. Click Make New Connection.
E. At the Connection wizard click next.

F. Click accept incoming Calls.
G: Choose your modem.
H. Choose Do Not Allow virtual private connections.

I. Add Center program user to the Allowed users screen by clicking the add button.
J. Enter user name as dvrsite with the full name of dvrsite. Click OK. (Do not enter a password. If you
put password here please write down the password exactly as you entered it as you will need it as you
complete the other steps in setting up a modem connection.)
K. Make sure that dvrsite is checked. Your box should look like one below. Click next

L. At the Networking Components screen choose Internet Protocool (TCP/IP) and click the properties
button.
M. Select Allow callers to access my Local area network ; then choose Specify TCP/IP address.
Enter IP address you can use default of 165.100.1.1 and 165.100.1.2 if it does not conflict with other ip
addresses on system. Your screen should look like screen below. After entering ip addresses click OK.

N. To finish setting up modem connection click Finish button. Leave the connection name as Incoming
Connections.
3. Set Up DVR software
A. To set up the DVR software to communicate with the modem click the setup button on the Main
DVR screen.

B. Select Communications Setup Button.
C. Uncheck Disable Remote Control. put a check in the Use PPP box Select your systems modem
from the Modem Select dropdown box.

D. Your screen should look similar to the screen below; if it does click OK. (You do not enter a password
unless you entered a password in step 2.-J. If you did then enter the same password here exactly as you
entered it.)
E. Click Apply then OK to return to the main DVR screen.

4. Setup the remote computer to communicate with the DVR.
A. Load the Center (Remote) software on the remote workstation if you have not done so previously.
(See section on Remote Software installation if you need help installing the Center Software).
B. Launch the Center Software by clicking on the Center software icon.
C. From the main Center Software screen select New button.

D. Enter Site Code Site Name IP address. Select Link type as Modem. Enter telephone number without
any spaces or hypens. (Do not enter a password unless you did so in the previous steps. If you entered a
password in the previous steps you must enter the same password here to be able to connect to the
DVRs modem.) Select yor computers modem from the Modem box. Click OK.
E. The Site Connections List box now shows you new site and should have a telephone icon indicating
that it is a modem connection. Select this icon enter a user name and password and click connect.

If you followed the steps correctly you should get connected via the modem. Please refer to the section
in the manual for information on using the Center software.
