The skipper's kit contains the 42' Series own er's manual. Along with the
owner's manual, there is one envelope whi ch include s information about
o nb oard systems and components furnished by s upplier s other than
Cruisers Yachts.
Owner's Manual, 42' Series Boats (3 Ring Binder)
Spend some time looking through this manual. It contains information
concern ing the operation and care of your boaL The descriptions con-
tained within the manual will introduce you to the features of the boat,
and provide you with a general knowledge of how the equipment works.
The manual is divided iuw ten sections, and each section is introduced
h ya table of conlents to help you qui ckly find needed information.
Become familiar with [he material in each section befure operating your
boat.
Throughout the manual you will come across safety precalltions labeled
A WARNING or A CAUTION. WARNINGS indi cate hazard s or unsafe
practices which could resu lt in personaltnjury or death. CAUTIONS
indicate situations which could result in damage to the boat and its vari-

Section I contains a description of the skipper 's kit and information
about the warranty.
Section 2 contains boat specifications such as dimensions and capacities.
There are also layout diagrams to inlroduce you to floorplans as well a..<;
the locations ofvariolls components.
Section 3 contains descriptions of all the cont rols and indicators on the
dash of lhe helm.
Section 4 cont.ains principles of operation for the major systems onboard
the 42' Series Boats. Look in mis section for electrical schematics.
Section 5 contains in str u ctions for ope ra ting the boat The section begius
with safely int o rmation which is "must" reading.

Dealership Responsibilities
I. The dea l er will discuss the term s of all warranties, and stress the
im portance of regist ering warranties with the appropriate manufac-
turers.
2. The dealer will provide instructiOJl for obtaining warran ly service.
3.
The dealer will go over the pre-delivery service record with you, and
th en sign it to certify that all work has been accomplished.
4. The dealer ",ill provide you with a thorough instruction in the
operation of your boat and all its systems.
Your Responsibilities
1. Sit down with the dealer and go over all warranties. Fill in the
Cruisers YachL<; limited warranty registration card which is located in
an envelope inside the skipper's kit. Keep a record of the hull num-
ber for future reference.
2. Inspect the boat at the time of delivery to ensure that all systems are
operating properly.
3. Sit
down with the dealer and go over the predelivery service record.
Sign this record to indicate that it has been explained to you.
4. Operate all equipment per the manufacturer's instructions.
5. Cruisers Yachts recommend., that you refer to your engine warranty
for initial inspection and service requirements.
b. Perform or provide for the appropriate periodic maintenance out -
lined in the owner's manuals and service guides.

Do not rely on lhe accuracy of gauges.
R ea dings are only approximate, and should
always be compared to the hours of use multi-
plied by the known fuel consumption (GPH).
Item] is the port fuel tank gauge and item 5 is the star-
board fuel tank gauge. The gauges indicate the approxi-
mate amount of fuel in each of the tanks.
2 and 4 ENGINE TACHOMETERS
Item 2 is the port engine tachometer, and item 4 is the
srarbottrd engine tachom ete r. The tachometers register
engine crankshaft RPM's. Propeller shaft RPM's are
approximately olle half of engine crankshaft RPM's. Refer
to your engine owner's manual for the 'lppropriate engine
speed.

3 SYNCHRONIZER GAUGE
The sy nc hr onizer gaug e compa r es engine s peeds . When
the needJe point s to zero, it m ea ns th e port and s tarboard
engi nes are funning in sy nc with eac h other. ""ncn the
needle poin to; to the left Of lh e right of ze ro , it means one
engine is running at a high er RPM than the other.
Correct the sit ua tion by ei ther increasi ng or decreasing
the throttl e on one engi ne or the ot her until the gauge
indicates zero.
6 COMPASS
The compass ha s not bee n co mpensated. The compensat-
ing s houl d be perform ed by a qualified compass adjust er.
After
the compass has been adjuste d, do not allow any
ir on or steel objects to be pl aced in its v icinit y - even t em -
porarily . Refer to th e owne r's manual induded in th e
Skipper 's Kit t or d eta il ed information.

hem 7 is the port engi ne ho ur met er, and item 8 is th e
starbo ar d e ngin c hourmcter. The hourmeters regist er
accumulat.ed engine oper ating tilne, and are activated
when t.h e ignition s wi tch is in the "on" position. Be aware
that lime will be l ogged when ignition switch is "on," e ven
wh en the eng ine s are off. Use the engine hourm et ers to
k
ee p accurate l ogs for scheduled maintenance, and to
dete rmin e ralC of f uel consumption in gallons per hour.
TRANSMISSION OIL PRESSURE GAUGES
(Diesel Only)
It em 9 is a transmission o il pressure gauge f or the port
e ngine tran s mi ssion, and item 10 is a tran smission o il
pr essure gauge for the starboard engine tran smission. The
transmissions a re hydraulically operat ed, a nd ideally
should read be tw ee n 30 0 and 320 psi. Small fluc tuation s
are n orma l, but maj or variations ma y indi ca te trouble. If
pre"ure c han ges radically, s hut engines off and co nsult
your dealer.
OIL PRESSURE GAUGES
I tem II is all oil pressure gauge Lor the port eng ine, and
it.em 12 is an oil pressure gauge for th e starbo ard eng-inc.
Th ese ga uges indicate the pressure of the luhr icating oil
in s ide the en gine. Make a note of the oil pr ess ur e r ead ing
when the boat is new; this can be cons id er ed your
engine's norm al oil pressure. Flu ctuations will occur in
the pressure under different operating s peeds , hut major
deviations may signal problems. If pre ss ur e stops radically
or is not registe,-ing. turn the eng in es ofJ and co ns ult yo ur
d ea ler.

Push the lOp of accessory svvilch item 13 to turn on depth
finder. Push the bottom of the switch to turn it off.
ENGINE TEMPERATURE GAUGES
Item 14 is a temperature gauge for the port enginc, and
item 15 is a temperature gauge for the starboard engine.
The gauges indicate cooling water temperature inside the
engines. Normally the gauge will register between 1700F
and 195°F. Consult engine owner's manual if gauge regis-
ters outside of this range.
VOLTMETER
Item 16 is a voltnlctcr for the port enginc cranking bat-
tery, and item 17 is a voltmeter for Lhe starboard engine
cranking battery. Normal operating voltage, when engine
is at 1000 plus RPM·s. is between 12.0 and 15.5 volts.
Higher or lower readings would indicate that lhere is a
problem. Refer to your engine owner's manual for details,
and refer the problem to your Cruisers Yachts dealer.
TRANSMISSION CONTROLS
Item 18 is the directional selector for the port engine, and
item 19 is the directional selector for the starboard
engine. Each directional selector has three positions: for-
ward, neuu'al, and reverse. Push the selector its full travel
away
from you to go forward, and pull the selector its full
u'avel towards you to go in reverse. The detent position
between forward and reverse is neuu·al.
20 STEERING WHEEL
The steering wheel is hydraulically linked to the rudders
for ease of operation.
See Section 4, Principles of Operation for detailed infor-
mation on the steering system.
21 HALON DISPLAY UNIT

The display unit has an indicator lamp to indicate Halon
automatic fire extinguisher status. The lamp should glow
when the ignition svvitch is in the "on" position indicating
a charged system. Should the system discharge, the lamp
will not glow.

THROTfLE CONTROLS
Item 22 is the throttle control lever for the port engine,
and item 23 is the throttle control lever lor the starboard
engine. Pull the levers their ful1 u'avcl toward you for
engine idle, and gradually increase the speed to full throt-
tle by pushing the levers away from you,

Push the trim tab rocker switches in half sec-
ond bursts. Holding the rockers down too
long will ovcnrim the hoat.
The trim tah rocker s\\~tchcs are used to correct the trim
of your boat while YOll are underway. To Dim the how of
your boat down, push the top halves of both switches. To
trim the bow of your boat up, push the bottom halves of
hoth switches. Re1"cr to Suggested Operating Techniques
in Section 5 for detailed information. The trim tabs are
protected by a resettable circuit breaker located in the
hreaker panel.

Operate blowersJor at leastJonr minutes before
cranking engine. Run blowers when operating
engines be/ow cruising speed.
Push the top of the rocker switch to turn blowers on, and
at the bottom to turn them off. Blower circuit protection
is provided by a rescttable circuit breaker located in the
hreaker panel.
27 and 28 IGNITION SWITCHES (Gas)/
START SWITCHES (Diesel)
Item 27 is the ignition switch for the gas engine, or the
start switch for the diesel engine, portside. Item 28 is the
ignition switch for the gas engine, or the start switch for
the diesel engine, starboard side.
The gas ignition switch is three position: off/stop, run,
and start. There is no accessory position. The diesel switch
is also three position, but with no stop feamre. It~ posi-
tions arc: off, run, and start. There is no accessory posi-
tion.
Each switch is electrically protected by a resettahle circuit
breaker located in the breaker panel.
29 NAVIGATION/ANCHOR liGHTS SWITCH
AND BREAKER
The light switch is a three position switch. The middle
position is "off" Push the top of the rocker switch to oper-
ate the navigation lights. The navigation lighlS are the
port and starboard side lights, the stern light, and the
mast light Push the hottom of the rocker S\vitch to oper-
ate the anchor light. The lights are protected by a reset-
lahle circuit breaker located in the hreaker panel.
