Installation
Thissection willwalkyou throughthe installation process.Placementofthe Wireless ADSLRouterisveryimportant. Donotplacethe Routerinan enclosed area such
asacloset, cabinet, orinthe atticorgarage.Placethe Wireless ADSLRouterinalocation whereitcan beeasilyconnectedtoEthernet devices,the telephone line as
well astoapowersource.
Installation Notes
Inordertoestablishaconnectiontothe Internetitwill benecessarytoprovide information tothe Routerthatwillbestored initsmemory.Forsomeusers,onlytheir
account information (Usernameand Password)isrequired. Forothers, variousparametersthat controland define the Internet connection will berequired.Youcan print
outthetwopagesbelowand usethetablestolist thisinformation. Thiswayyouhaveahardcopyofall the information neededtosetuptheRouter. Ifit isnecessaryto
reconfigurethe device, all the necessaryinformation can beeasilyaccessed. Besuretokeepthisinformation safeand private.
LowPass Filters
SinceADSLand telephone servicessharethe samecopperwiringtocarrytheirrespectivesignals,afilteringmechanismmaybenecessarytoavoidmutualinterference.
Alowpass filterdevicecan beinstalled foreachtelephone thatsharesthe line withthe ADSLline.Thesefiltersareeasytoinstall passivedevicesthatconnecttothe
ADSLdeviceand/ortelephone usingstandardtelephone cable.Ask yourserviceproviderformoreinformation about the useoflowpass filterswithyourinstallation.
Operating Systems
TheDSL-2600Uusesan HTML-based webinterfaceforsetupandmanagement. Thewebconfiguration managermaybeaccessed usinganyoperatingsystemcapable
ofrunningwebbrowsersoftware, includingWindows98 SE, WindowsME, Windows2000, WindowsXP, and WindowsVista.
WebBrowser
Anycommon webbrowsercan beused toconfigurethe Routerusingthe webconfiguration managementsoftware.The programisdesigned toworkbestwithmore
recentlyreleasedbrowserssuchasOpera, Microsoft InternetExplorer®version 6.0,NetscapeNavigator®version 6.2.3,orlaterversions.The webbrowsermusthave
JavaScript enabled. JavaScript isenabled bydefault on manybrowsers.MakesureJavaScript hasnot been disabled byothersoftware(suchasvirusprotection orweb
usersecuritypackages)that mayberunningon yourcomputer.
EthernetPort(NICAdapter)
AnycomputerthatusestheRoutermustbeabletoconnecttoitthroughtheEthernetportonthe Router.ThisconnectionisanEthernetconnectionandtherefore
requiresthatyourcomputerbeequipped withan Ethernetportaswell.Mostnotebookcomputersarenowsoldwithan Ethernetportalreadyinstalled.Likewise,most
fullyassembled desktopcomputerscomewithan EthernetNICadapterasstandardequipment. If yourcomputerdoesnothavean Ethernetport, you mustinstall an
Ethernet NICadapterbeforeyou can usethe Router. Ifyou must install an adapter, followthe installation instructionsthat comewiththe Ethernet NICadapter.
Additional Software
It maybenecessarytoinstall softwareon yourcomputerthatenablesthe computertoaccess theInternet. Additionalsoftwaremustbeinstalled ifyou areusingthe

deviceasasimplebridge.Forabridged connection,theinformation neededtomakeandmaintaintheInternetconnectionisstoredonanothercomputerorgateway
device, not inthe Routeritself.
IfyourADSLserviceisdelivered throughaPPPoEorPPPoAconnection,theinformation neededtoestablishand maintaintheInternetconnectioncanbestored inthe
Router.Inthiscase,itisnotnecessarytoinstall softwareon yourcomputer.It mayhoweverbenecessarytochangesomesettingsinthedevice,includingaccount
information used toidentifyand verifythe connection.
All connectionstothe Internetrequireaunique globalIPaddress.Forbridged connections,the globalIPsettingsmustreside inaTCP/IPenabled deviceon the LAN
side ofthe bridge,suchasaPC,aserver,agatewaydevicesuchasarouterorsimilarfirewallhardware.TheIPaddress can beassigned inanumberofways.Your
networkserviceproviderwill giveyou instructionsabout anyadditionalconnection softwareorNICconfiguration that mayberequired.
Wireless LAN
Computersusingthe Wireless networkcan accessthe Internetorusethe embedded 802.1gwirelessaccess point. Wireless workstationsmusthavean 802.1gor
802.1bwireless networkcardinstalled tousethe Wireless ADSLRouter.Inaddition theworkstationsmustbeconfigured tooperateon the samechannelandSSIDas
the Wireless ADSLRouter. Ifwireless securityisused, the wireless workstationsmust beproperlyconfigured forthe securitysettingsused.

Username
Thisisthe Usernameused tologon toyourADSLserviceprovider’snetwork.YourADSLserviceproviderusesthistoidentifyyouraccount.
Password
ThisisthePasswordused,inconjunctionwiththe Usernameabove,tologontoyourADSLserviceprovider’snetwork.Thisisusedtoverifytheidentityofyouraccount.
WANSetting / Connection Type
Thesesettingsdescribethe method yourADSLserviceproviderusestotransport databetween the Internet and yourcomputer. Most userswill usethe default settings.
You mayneed tospecifyone ofthe followingWANSettingand Connection Typeconfigurations(Connection Typesettingslisted inparenthesis):
• PPPoE/PPPoA(PPPoELLC, PPPoEVC-Mux, PPPoALLCorPPPoAVC-Mux)

Modulation Type
ADSLusesvariousstandardized modulationtechniquestotransmitdataoverthe allotted signalfrequencies.Someusersmayneedtochangethe typeofmodulation
used fortheirservice.The default DSLmodulation (AutoSynch-Up)used forthe Routerautomaticallydetectsall typesofADSL,ADSL2, and ADSL2+modulation.
SecurityProtocol
Thisisthemethod yourADSLserviceproviderwill usetoverifyyourUsernameand Passwordwhen you logon totheirnetwork.YourRoutersupportsthePAPand
CHAPprotocols.
VPI
Mostuserswillnotberequired tochangethissetting.The VirtualPathIdentifier(VPI)isused inconjunction withthe VirtualChannelIdentifier(VCI)toidentifythedata
pathbetween yourADSLserviceprovider’snetworkand yourcomputer.Ifyou aresettingupthe Routerformultiplevirtualconnections,you willneed toconfigurethe
VPIandVCIasinstructed byyourADSLserviceproviderforthe additionalconnections.Thissetting can bechanged inthe WANSettingswindowofthe web
management interface.
VCI
Mostuserswill notberequired tochangethissetting. TheVirtualChannelIdentifier(VCI)used inconjunction withthe VPItoidentifythe datapathbetween yourADSL
serviceprovider’snetworkand yourcomputer.Ifyou aresettingupthe Routerformultiplevirtualconnections, you will need toconfigurethe VPIandVCIasinstructed by
yourADSLserviceproviderforthe additionalconnections.Thissettingcan bechanged inthe WANSettingswindowofthe webmanagement interface.

enterthisUsername.The default Usernameforthe Routeris admin.”The usercannot changethis.

Thisisthe Passwordyou will beprompted toenterwhen you access the Router’smanagement interface.The default Passwordis admin.”The usermaychangethis.
LANIPaddresses fortheDSL-2600U
ThisistheIPaddress youwill enterintothe Addressfieldofyourwebbrowsertoaccess theRouter’sconfiguration graphicaluserinterface(GUI)usingawebbrowser.
The defaultIPaddress is10.1.1.1.Thismaybechanged tosuitanyIPaddress schemethe userdesires.Thisaddress willbethe baseIPaddress usedforDHCP
serviceon the LANwhen DHCPisenabled.
LANSubnetMask fortheDSL-2600U
Thisisthe subnet mask used bythe DSL-2600U, and will beused throughout yourLAN.The default subnet mask is255.0.0.0.Thiscan bechanged later.
Information you will needaboutyourLANorcomputer:
EthernetNIC
Ifyourcomputerhasan EthernetNIC,you canconnectthe DSL-2600UtothisEthernetportusingan Ethernetcable.You canalsousethe Ethernetportson the
DSL-2600Utoconnect toothercomputerorEthernet devices.
DHCPClientstatus
YourDSL-2600UADSLRouterisconfigured,bydefault, tobeaDHCPserver.Thismeansthatitcanassignan IPaddress,subnetmask,and adefaultgatewayaddress
tocomputerson yourLAN.ThedefaultrangeofIPaddressestheDSL-2600Uwill assignarefrom10.1.1.5to10.1.1.254.Yourcomputer(orcomputers)needstobe
configured toobtainan IPaddress automatically(that is, theyneed tobeconfigured asDHCPclients.)
It isrecommended thatyou collect andrecordthisinformation here, orinsomeothersecureplace, incaseyou havetore-configureyourADSLconnection inthe future.
Onceyou havethe aboveinformation, you arereadytosetupand configureyourDSL-2600UADSLRouter.

Device Installation
TheWireless ADSLRoutermaintainsthreeseparateinterfaces,anADSL,anEthernet, andaWirelessLANinterface.PlacetheWireless ADSLRouterinalocation
whereit can beeasilyconnected toEthernet devices, the telephone line aswell astoapowersource.
The Routercan beplaced on ashelfordesktop, ideallyyou shouldbeabletosee the LEDindicatorson the front ifyou need toviewthemfortroubleshooting.
Poweron Router
The Routermust beused withthe poweradapterincluded withthe device.
1.Connect the poweradaptertothe PowerInput (12VDC, 1A)on the back panelofthe Wireless ADSLRouterand plugthe otherend ofthe poweradaptertoa
wall outlet orpowerstrip.
2.Pushthe PowerButton toturnthe poweron.
3.The Power LEDon the front panelwill shine bright green toindicatethe deviceispowered on.
4.Ifthe Ethernet port isconnected toaworkingdevice, check the LAN LEDindicatortomakesurethe connection isvalid.The Wireless ADSLRouterwill attempt
toestablishthe ADSLconnection, ifthe ADSLline isconnected and the Wireless ADSLRouterisproperlyconfigured the ADSL LEDwill light upafterseveral
seconds. Ifthisisthe first timeinstallingthe device, somesettingsmayneed tobechanged beforethe Wireless ADSLRoutercan establishaconnection.
FactoryReset Button
The Routermaybereset tothe originalfactorydefault settingsbyusingaballpoint orpapercliptogentlypushdownthe reset button inthe followingsequence:
1.Withthe routerpowered on (check the PowerLEDtomakesureit lightssteadygreen), press and holddownthe reset button usingapapercliporsimilarobject
forabout 6to8seconds.
2.The routerwill restart. Watchthe PowerLEDtoverifythat it isrestarting.
3.When it ispowered on againit isreadytobeconfigured.The wholeprocess takesabout 30 seconds.
4.The devicesettingswill berestored tothe factorydefault IPaddress 10.1.1.1 and the subnet mask is 255.0.0.0, the default management Usernameis admin”
and the default Passwordis admin.”
Note: Afactoryresetwill erasethe currentconfiguration settingsand resetthemtothe defaultsettings.Afterithasrestarted,log intothe router’sweb-based
management interfaceand usethe Setup Wizardtoconfigurethe basicsettings.

NetworkConnections
ConnectADSLLine
Usethe ADSLcableincluded withthe Routertoconnectittoatelephonewall socketorreceptacle.Plug one endof the cableintothe ADSLport(RJ-11receptacle)on
the rearpanelofthe Routerandinserttheotherendintothe RJ-11wall socket. Ifyouareusingalowpass filterdevice,followthe instructionsincludedwiththedeviceor
given toyou byyourserviceprovider. The ADSLconnection representsthe WANinterface,the connectiontothe Internet. Itisthe physicallinktothe serviceprovider’s
networkbackbone and ultimatelytothe Internet.
ConnectRoutertoEthernet
The Routermaybeconnected toasinglecomputerorEthernetdevicethroughthe 10/100BASE-TXEthernetporton therearpanel.Anyconnection toanEthernet
concentratingdevicesuchasaswitchorhubmustoperateataspeed of10/100Mbpsonly.When connectingtheRoutertoanyEthernetdevicethatiscapableof
operatingatspeedshigherthan10Mbps,besurethatthedevicehasauto-negotiation(NWay)enabled fortheconnectingport.Usestandardtwisted-paircablewith
RJ-45 connectors.The RJ-45 porton the Routerisacrossed port(MDI-X).FollowstandardEthernetguidelineswhen decidingwhattypeofcabletousetomakethis
connection.When connectingtheRouterdirectlytoaPCorserveruseanormalstraight-throughcable.Youshoulduseacrossedcablewhen connectingtheRoutertoa
normal(MDI-X)porton aswitchorhub.Useanormalstraight-throughcablewhen connectingittoan uplink(MDI-II)porton ahuborswitch.The rulesgoverning

Introduction toWebConfiguration
Thefirsttimeyou setuptheRouter.It isrecommendedthatyouconfigurethe WANconnectionusingasinglecomputer,toensurethatboththe computerand theRouterare
notconnectedtotheLAN.Oncethe WANconnectionoperatesproperly,youmaycontinuetomakechangestoRouterconfiguration,includingIPsettingsandDHCPsetup.
Thischapterisconcerned withusingyourcomputertoconfiguretheWANconnection.Thefollowingchapterdescribesthe variousmenusused toconfigureandmonitorthe
Router, includinghowtochangeIPsettingsand DHCPserversetup.
Preparation BeforeLogin
Beforeaccessingthe Modem, ensurethe communication between PCand Modemisnormal. Check the communication asfollows.
= Configurethe IPaddress ofthe PCas10.1.1.X(2~254),netmask as
255.0.0.0,gatewayaddress as10.1.1.1(forcustomized version,configure
themaccordingtothe actualversion).
= Enter arp-a intheDOSwindowtocheck whetherthePCcanreadthe MAC
address ofthe Modem.
= Pingthe management IPaddress (10.1.1.1bydefault)ofthe Modem.
Ifthe PCcan readtheMACaddress ofthe Modemand can pingthroughthe
managementIPaddress ofthe Modem,thatmeansthe communication of
the PCand the Modemisnormal.

Logging Into theModem
The followingdescription isadetail How-To”userguide and isprepared forfirst timeusers.
First-TimeLogin
When you logintothe DSLRouterforthe first time, the loginwizardappears.
Step1 Open aWebbrowseron yourcomputer.
Step2 Enter http://10.1.1.1 (DSLrouterdefault IPaddress)inthe address bar.The loginpage
appears.
Step3 Enterausernameand the password. The default usernameand passwordofthe super
userare admin and admin.Theusernameand passwordofthe common userare user and
user. You need not enterthe usernameand passwordagainifyou select the option
Remembermypassword. It isrecommended tochangethesedefault valuesafterlogging
intothe DSLrouterforthe first time.
Step4 Click OK tologinorclick Cancel toexit the loginpage.
Afterloggingintothe DSLrouterasasuperuser, you can query, configure, and modifyall configurations, and diagnosethe system.
You need toreboot the DSLroutertoenableyourmodification orconfiguration effectiveinsomecases, forexample, afteryou modifythe PVCconfiguration. Some
modification, suchasaddingastaticroute, takeseffect at once, and doesnot requiremodemreboot.

Quick Setup
The Quick Setup pagemainlyincludesthe followingthree functions:

Quick setupenablesfast and accurateconfiguration ofyourInternet connection and otherimportant parameters.The followingsectionsdescribethesevarious
configuration parameters. Whetheryou configuretheseparametersorusethe default ones, click Next toenableyourInternet connection.
When subscribingtoabroadband service, you shouldbeawareofthe method bywhichyou areconnected tothe Internet. YourphysicalWANdevicecan beEthernet,
DSL, orboth. Technicalinformation regardingthe propertiesofyourInternet connection shouldbeprovided byyourInternet serviceprovider(ISP). Forexample, yourISP
shouldinformyou whetheryou areconnected tothe Internet byusingastaticordynamicIPaddress, orthe protocols, suchasPPPOAorPPPoE, whichyou useto
communicateoverthe Internet.

AccordingtoyourISP instructions, specifythe followingparameters:

= VCI (VirtualChannelIdentifier)
Virtualchannelbetween twopointsinanATMnetwork.Thevalidvalue rangeisfrom
32 to65535 (1to31 arereserved forknownprotocols).
= EnableQualityOfService
EnablingQoSforaPVCimprovesperformanceforselected classesofapplications.
However, sinceQoSalsoconsumessystemresources, the numberofPVCsis
reduced consequently. Use AdvancedSetup/QualityofService toassignpriorities
forthe applications.
Forexample, PVC0/35 istobemodified and the default valuesofQoSremain. Inactual
applications, you can modifythemdependingon yourISP instructions.
SelectingInternetConnectionTypeandEncapsulationType
You can select yourconnection typefromthe followinglist. Eachconnect typecorresponds
toseveralencapsulation types:
= PPP overATM(PPPoA)
PPPoAEncapsulation Mode: VC/MUX, LLC/ENCAPSULATION
