SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 How To Use This Manual
This manual explains the installation, operation and maintenance of Daktronics DataTime®
Series 50 LED Time and Temperature Displays. It specifies details and dimensions and gives
guidance for mounting, wiring and operating these displays. The manual is divided into
mechanical, electrical, operation and maintenance sections.
For additional questions regarding the safety, installation, operation or service of these
displays, please refer to the phone numbers listed on the cover page of this manual.
Important Safeguards:
1. Read and understand these instructions before installing.
2. Do not drop the control console or allow it to get wet.
3. Be sure the display is properly grounded.
4. Disconnect power to the displays when they are not in use.
5. Disconnect power when servicing the displays.
6. Do not modify the displays or attach any panels or coverings to the displays
without the written consent of Daktronics, Inc.
The box below is an illustration of Daktronics drawing numbering system. The drawing
number “7087-P08A-69945” is how Daktronics identifies individual drawings. This number
is located in the lower right corner of the drawing. The manual refers to drawings by the last
five digits and the letter preceding them. In the example below, the drawing would be referred
to as Drawing A-69945. All drawings referred to as such will be inserted at the end of each
section.
2.1 Display Overview
Refer to the following drawing for overall display specifications for single face and 2V
displays, and mounting details. Also use this drawing as an aid for mechanical installation,
electrical installation and maintenance.

SECTION 2: MECHANICAL INSTALLATION
2.1 Display Definitions
Two configurations of displays are offered: single face displays and 2V displays. A single
face display is a single-sided, stand-alone unit. A 2V display consists of two units – one
master and one slave. The two sides of this display may be mounted at any angle between 0
and 180 degrees. When mounted back-to-back, the maximum distance between displays
cannot exceed 24”. The interconnect harness for the slave unit is coiled up inside the cabinet
of the slave unit.
2.2 Support Column Selection
Support column size is dependent on the height and total wind loading of the display and
advertising panels that make up the entire display. Column selection is critical and should be
done only by a qualified individual. Only pipe and square or rectangular tubing are
recommended for single column displays. Wide flange members have low torque resisting
properties and wind flutter may result. It is the responsibility of the installer to determine the
column size required to support all the components to be mounted.
2.3 Mounting Details

Drawing A-93797 shows suggested mounting methods and instructions. Refer to Drawing
A-91840 in Section 1 and Drawing A-93797 for additional mounting details and dimensions.

SECTION 3: ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
Knockouts for 1/2” conduit are provided in the master display on the left end of the display (front view)
for signal, power and temperature sensor entrance. Refer to Drawing A-91840 in Section 1 for
dimensions. Figure 4 shows the general electrical layout of an installation.

3.1 Display Access
Access the inside of the display through the hinged face panel to perform electrical installation.
The face panel is held closed with 1/4-turn fasteners along the bottom. Release the fasteners and
swing the face panel open. Secure the face panel by tightening the thumb screws located in the
upper corners of the face panel (refer to Figure 5).
Cable ties were used in shipping to secure the digits. Cut the cable ties on the digit brackets to
access the interior of the display.

The power connections are made on the power termination panel located in the master unit (refer
to Figure 6 for a close up view of the panel). The signal connections are made directly to the
display controller. Both the power termination panel and the controller enclosure can be accessed
by removing the 1/4 turn retaining screws in the cover (refer to Figure 7). Note: The 1/4 turn
fasteners do not completely come out of the cover.

3.2 Power Connection

Note: When power is run to the display, a disconnect switch or plug must be provided within
sight of the display.
Refer to Figures 6 and 7. Power is supplied to the display through the terminal block labeled
TB41. The service required for a single face display is 120 VAC. Service for a 2V display is
120/240 VAC single phase. The display amperage is stated on the display specification label.
Follow the instructions below to connect power to the display.
1. Run power through conduit into the display through one of the knockouts provided
and route over to the termination panel.
2. Connect the white neutral wire(s) to “120VAC-N” on TB41.
3. Connect the black 120 VAC wire to “120VAC-L” on TB41.
3.3 Grounding
All power service must be supplied with an earth-ground wire. Use the following instructions to
properly ground the display:
1. Attach the ground wire to the earth ground lug in the termination panel marked with
“Earth Ground” (Figure 6).
2. Attach the ground wire to a copper earth ground rod installed according to the
National Electrical Code. Do not ground to any steel columns supporting the display.
3.4 Handset Connection
The handset enclosure consists of a small weatherproof box which houses the handset and a
junction box (refer to Figure 8). A 25-foot signal cable is provided to connect the handset
enclosure to the display. The end terminated with spade lugs goes to the handset j-box. Install the
handset as follows:
1. Mount the handset enclosure at the base of the display in a position where it will be
possible to see the display when using the handset. The handset has a six-foot cable
that plugs into the j-box.
2. Run the signal cable through 1/2” conduit from the handset enclosure into the
display, and route to the display controller enclosure. Knockouts are provided in both
the handset enclosure and the display.
3. Remove the cover from the handset j-box and route the cable into the j-box. Connect
the three wires terminated with spade lugs to the terminal block mounted on the j-box
cover. Connect CLR (SIG) to WHT, BLK, and RED respectively, already connected
to the terminal block. Cut the shield back and leave it unterminated. Replace the
cover and plug in the handset.
4. Remove the cover from the controller enclosure and connect the control cable to TB3
on the controller. Connect CLR to position 1, RED to position 6, and BLK to
position 5. Connect the shield drain wire to position 5 as well.

3.5 Temperature Sensor/Light Detector
The temperature sensor/light detector (optional) is mounted separately and requires a location
away from the influence of chimneys, air conditioners, or vents which can cause abnormal
temperature fluctuations. Usually a separation of at least 20-30 feet horizontally is required to
achieve this. Locations where air movement is restricted are also unsatisfactory.
A first choice sensor location is a north eave or northern exposure. This location gives extra
stability and accuracy to the sensor because of added shading usually obtained on a northern
exposure.

The second choice for locating a temperature sensor is on the display itself, or somewhere on the
display structure. A light-colored display is preferred in this application. Location of the sensor
should be on a northern edge of the display to try to keep the sensor shaded. Greater accuracy is
obtained if there is grass below the sign rather than concrete or some other material. Display
mounted sensors are generally discouraged because of the potential of the display to self-heat and
gain heat from the sun, causing erroneous temperature readings.
3.5.1 Eave Mounting of Sensor
Figure 9 shows a temperature sensor that has been mounted under a roof eave. After
connections are made, inspect connections, fold wires away, and secure with #10 screws.

3.5.2 Connection to Controller
A 5-conductor 18-gauge cable (Belden 8465, Daktronics part number W-1007) is used to
connect the temperature/daylight sensor to the display controller. Maximum length is
1,000 feet. Install as follows:
1. Connect the cable to the temp sensor as shown in Figure 9 and route through
1/2” conduit to the display. To reduce the conduit entrances, route this cable
into the display through the same conduit used by the handset controller
signal cable (refer to Figure 4).
2. Route the cable to the display controller enclosure and connect the cable to
TB2 on the controller (refer to Figure 10). TB2 is marked with the proper
wire colors (1-white, 2-black, 3-red, 4-brown, 5-green, 6 is not used).

3.6 Master/Slave Connection
The slave display is electrically connected to the master display by means of an interconnect
harness provided in the slave display. This harness should be routed from the slave display into
the master display using a conduit nipple or other appropriate method. When back-to-back, the
displays can have a maximum separation of 24” due to the harness length.
The interconnect harness consists of eight (8) digit cables. Each digit cable has a nine (9)
position plug on it. The slave plugs are labeled 2, 4, 6 … 16. Connect these cables to the jacks
along the bottom of the driver inside the master display, starting with plug 2 on the left end
proceeding to plug 16 on the right. The installer is responsible for protecting the interconnect
harness between the two displays.
