Introduction

1 Introduction
This manual explains the installation and maintenance of Daktronics TI-2041 and TI-2042
pitch time displays. For additional information regarding the safety, installation,
operation, or service of these displays, refer to the telephone numbers listed in Section 5:
Daktronics Exchange and Repair & Return Programs (p�13). This manual is not specic
to a particular installation.
Important Safeguards
• Read and understand all instructions before beginning the installation process�
• Disconnect the display power when not in use or when servicing�
• Disconnect the display power before servicing power supplies to avoid electrical
shock� Power supplies run on high voltage and may cause physical injury if touched
while powered�
• Do not modify the structure or attach any panels or coverings to the display without
the express written consent of Daktronics�
• Do not disassemble control equipment or electronic controls of the display; failure to
follow this safeguard will make the warranty null and void�
• Do not drop the control equipment or allow it to get wet�

ID label, similar to the one shown in Figure 1.

when calling Daktronics customer service to ensure the request is serviced as quickly as

Listed below are drawing types commonly used by Daktronics, along with the information
typically provided. All drawings referenced in this manual are found in the appendices.
• Schematic Drawings: describe internal power and signal wiring as well as
interconnections between display sections; they may also include digit designations
and driver addressing information
• Shop Drawings: describe mounting methods to structural elements, access method
(front or rear), and power and signal entrance points
• System Riser Diagrams: describe power/signal connections between components
and the control location; they may also include control room layout and schematic
• Final Assembly Drawings: describe internal component locations and detailed
product appearance with part numbers and quantities
Project-specic information takes precedence over any other general information found
in this manual. Ensure all applicable material has been gathered before beginning the
installation. Contact a Daktronics sales coordinator or project manager.
Daktronics Nomenclature
Most display components have a white label that lists the part
number (Figure 3). Part numbers will also appear on certain drawings.
If a component is not found in the Replacement Parts (p�12), use
the label to order a replacement. Refer to Section 5: Daktronics
Exchange and Repair & Return Programs (p�13) if replacing or
repairing any display component.

Display Controllers
The scoreboards in this manual are designed for use with the All Sport®1600 and 5000
series control consoles. The consoles use keyboard overlays (sports inserts) to control
numerous sports/events and scoreboard models. Refer to the manual below for
operating instructions. The manual is available online at www.daktronics.com/manuals.

Support Structure Design
• Structure design is critical and should be done only by a qualied individual.
• It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that the structure and the connectors are
adequate�
• The customer must also ensure the installation meets local standards�
• Daktronics is not responsible for installations, the mounting structure or its structural
integrity, or for the quality of the mounting hardware used to attach the displays
to the support structure� Structure and attachment must conform to all applicable
building codes�
Ventilation and Temperature Requirements
Daktronics pitch time displays are front ventilated. The display must NOT be fully enclosed
inside a support structure or behind a face of plastic, glass, or other material. The front of
the display must be exposed to the air to allow for convection cooling.
Displays are designed to operate in ambient temperatures ranging from -40°F to 120°F
(-40°C to 49°C). However, overall structure design and ventilation should keep the display
cabinet interior below 140°F (60°C). Items to consider when designing a package to
house LED displays include:
• Solar gain from the black face of the displays
• Solar gain from other display cabinet surfaces
• Heat gain from electronics inside the displays
• Passive or active airow with adequate intake and exhaust areas
Daktronics is not responsible for high-temperature failure due to inadequate ventilation.

Due to the variety of wall materials used in sports facilities, Daktronics cannot anticipate
a user’s individual installation needs or provide mounting hardware suitable for every
installation. Choose a method of installation that will safely support the display's weight.
1� Lift the display into position on the wall.
Note: Daktronics assumes no liability for display damage or injury resulting from
incorrect setup or incorrect lifting methods.
2� Ensure the display is level, and secure it to the wall by attaching mounting hardware
through all mounting holes on the backsheet of the cabinet. Refer to the shop
drawings in Appendix A for mounting hole locations as well as approximate display
weights.

3 Electrical Installation
Electrical installation consists of routing power to the power terminal block located in
each display. The Final Assembly drawings in Appendix A show details on access for
electrical connections and the electrical requirements for that size of display.
Daktronics display front panels are hinged to allow access to the digits, cabling, and
other electronic components. See Access Internal Components (p�5) for cabinet
access details.
Warnings and Disclaimers
• Ensure that all electrical work meets or exceeds all local or national electrical codes.
• Provide the required power to the display as listed on the product labels,
specications, or site-specic riser drawings. The conductor size may vary based on
the length of the power run.
• Consider implementing a separate circuit for the display using an isolation
transformer or dedicated transformer.
• Daktronics assumes no liability for any issues caused by line voltage uctuations or
other improper power conditions.
Important Notes:
• Only qualied individuals should perform power and signal routing to the display and
termination at the display.
• Daktronics engineering staff must approve all proposed changes, or the warranty will
be void.
• Improper installation could result in serious damage to the equipment and could be
hazardous to personnel.
• Size conductors of circuits delivering power to a Daktronics display according to local
and national electrical codes so that the power distribution systems can deliver full-
load power to the display while maintaining a voltage within 5% of the utility nominal
voltage.
Power Requirements
Do not connect displays to any voltage other than that listed on the display product
label. Displays have a voltage input of 100-240 VAC and a frequency input of 50/60 Hz.
• A dedicated circuit is dened as one hot, one neutral, and one ground wire.
• Maximum amperage will vary with the number and type of digit displays connected.
Note: It is critical that the display circuit be fused at 15 A and that all conductors
used must be designed to pass a 15 A current in normal operation. Failure to
meet wiring and over-current protection device requirements may violate
local and national electrical codes and will void the display warranty.
Main Disconnect
Daktronics requires installation of a power disconnect switch with the display so that all
ungrounded conductors can be disconnected near the point of power connection.
Locate the disconnecting means either in a direct line of sight from the display or so it
can be locked in the open position. This ensures that power is not reconnected while
service personnel work on the display.

Access Internal Components
The doors of Daktronics pitch time displays are secured by slotted fasteners.
1� Release a fastener by gently turning it counter-clockwise with a at-head screwdriver.
2� Open the doors using the knob attached to the display face (if provided) or by
gently pushing the door outward from inside of the display (if there are no knobs).
3� Components are attached inside the cabinet to the display’s backsheet and their
locations vary between display sizes. See Figure 4 and Figure 5 for approximate
component locations.

Grounding
All components of a display system – including but not limited to displays, control
equipment, and connected peripheral equipment – must be electrically grounded.
Only qualied individuals may perform electrical work, including verication of ground
resistance. Daktronics is not responsible for improper grounding or damage incurred as a
result of improper grounding.
Grounding methods must meet the provisions of all applicable local and national codes.
Inspect and verify all grounding methods meet the provisions of all applicable local and
national codes.
Proper grounding is necessary for reliable equipment operation and general electrical
safety. Failure to properly ground the display system may void the warranty, disrupt
operation, damage equipment, and cause bodily harm or death.
There are two types of power installation: installation with ground and neutral conductors
provided, and installation with only a neutral conductor provided. These two power
installations differ slightly, as described in the following subsections.
Installation with Ground and Neutral Conductors Provided
For this type of installation, the power circuit must contain an isolated earth-ground
conductor. In this circumstance, do not connect neutral to ground at the disconnect or
at the display as this would violate electrical codes and void the warranty.
Use a disconnect so that all ungrounded lines can be disconnected. The local and
national electrical codes may require using a lockable power disconnect at or within
sight of the display.
Installation with Only a Neutral Conductor Provided
Installations where no grounding conductor is provided must comply with local and
national electrical codes. If the installation meets all requirements, observe the following
guidelines:
• Connect the grounding electrode cable at the local disconnect, never at the display
driver/power enclosure.
• Use a disconnect that opens all of the ungrounded phase conductors.
Lightning Protection
The use of a disconnect near the display location to completely cut all current-carrying
lines signicantly protects the circuits against lightning damage. Local and national
electrical codes may also require it. In order for this system to provide protection, the
power must be disconnected when the display is not in use.
The control console also should be disconnected from power and from the signal
junction box when the system is not in use. The same surges that may damage the
display components can also damage the console’s circuitry.

Connection
Power and signal cables are routed into the display
from the rear (or sides) via separate conduits. All
power and signal wiring terminates at the ber/
surge card enclosure. Note that systems with radio
control typically only require signal wiring for backup
purposes.
1� Look for a warning label similar to Figure 6 to locate the front access panel to the
driver enclosure.
2� Loosen the latches to open the access door panels.
3� Remove the metal cover of the ber/surge card enclosure by loosening the screws,
then lifting it up and off through the keyholes.
4� Connect the power wires coming through the rear (or side) of the display to the main
terminal block, as shown in Figure 5.
Note: If a power receptacle is needed to operate the control console at the display
for troubleshooting, an installation electrician must provide an outlet close to the
disconnect box specically for this purpose.

Route copper signal cable through the
conduit knockout on the rear of the display
to the signal surge arrestor card (Figure 8),
located in an enclosure.
At the SIGNAL IN terminal block, connect
red signal wire to positive (+) and black
signal wire to negative (–).
Note: Ensure shield (silver) wire is properly
connected to the SHLD terminal.
To connect signal to nearby displays, route
signal wire in conduit from SIGNAL OUT of
the signal surge arrestor card in the primary
display to SIGNAL IN on the signal surge
arrestor card in the secondary display.
At a minimum, single-pair, shielded cable,
22 AWG (part # W-1077) is recommended.
Two-pair shielded cable (part # W-1234) is preferred.
Fiber Optic Signal
Route ber optic signal cable through the
conduit knockout on the rear of the display.
The ber optic cable is terminated to a male
ST-type connector and plugged into the J3
jack on the ber card (Figure 9), located in
an enclosure.
A minimum cabling of multi-mode, 62.5/125
um, and 2-core ber cable is recommended
(part # W-1242). This method requires a
signal converter between the All Sport
console’s scoreboard output and the ber
optic cable (not provided by Daktronics).
To connect signal to nearby displays, route
*copper* signal wire in conduit from SIGNAL
OUT of the ber card in the primary display
to SIGNAL IN on the signal surge arrestor
card in the secondary display.

Wireless Signal Connection

All Sport Control
A wireless radio system requires an All Sport control console equipped with radio
transmitter as well as a radio receiver plugged into the 6-pin J21 jack on the primary
driver and mounted internally to the front panel of the display. For more information, refer
to the Gen VI Radio Installation Manual (DD2362277), provided with the receiver unit and
available online at www.daktronics.com/manuals.
Radio Settings
With an All Sport radio receiver installed,
watch for the radio Broadcast settings
(“b1”) and Channel settings (“C1”) in the
clock digits or Home and Guest scores
during the Power-On Self-Test (POST)
(p�9). Refer to Figure 10.
These values must match the settings in the control console.
Refer to the controller screens below and the manual listed in
Display Controllers (p�2).
If the radio receiver channel and broadcast settings match those set in the console but
the console does not control the display, there may be radio interference. This can occur
when a nearby display also uses radio control. In this case, change the settings of the
wireless radio receiver inside the display and in the console as described in the radio
control manuals.
Power-On Self-Test (POST)
The display performs a self-test each time that power is turned on and the control
console is powered off or not connected. If the control console is connected and
powered on, the self-test does not run, and data from the control console appears on
the display after a few seconds. Figure 11 shows an example of the LED bar test pattern
that each digit performs.

Disconnect power before doing any repair or maintenance work on the display�
Permit only qualied service personnel to access internal display electronics.
Disconnect power when not using the display�
Visual Structural Inspection
At least once a year, check the display to ensure the structure and components are in
good condition. Inspect the paint and cabinet for corrosion. Make sure fasteners are
tight. Tighten or replace as required.

The display driver has multiple jacks that receive and output power and signal. The driver
also features diagnostic LEDs that indicate whether it is functioning properly. These LEDs
can help pinpoint problems with driver setup or operation.
Refer to Figure 12 for the locations of the primary driver jacks and LEDs, and see the
tables below for descriptions of their functions. For detailed descriptions and pin-outs of
the driver jacks, refer to DWG-3071833.

LED Function Operation Summary
DS1 Radio/
RS-232 RX Blinking or off DS1 will be blinking when the driver is receiving radio signal and off when there is no signal.
DS2 Status Blinking DS2 will be blinking at one second intervals to indicate
the driver is running.
DS5 Signal RX Blinking or off DS5 will be blinking when the driver is receiving current
loop signal and off when there is no signal.
DS8 Power Steady on DS8 will be on and steady to indicate driver has power.
In addition to the LED indicators on the driver, both the ber receiver card (in the display)
and the ber transmitter card (in the control location) have a single status LED. The
transmitter LED will be on if an All Sport is connected and powered up, and it will pulse
when data is transferred. The receiver LED will pulse when data is received.

Setting the Driver Address

Since the same LED drivers can be used for many
display models, each driver must be set to receive
the correct signal input, or address, for the model
in which it is being used.
Addresses are set through the S2 (L) and S3 (H)
rotary switches on the driver (Figure 13) using a
small athead screwdriver.
All timing displays in this manual use address 1
(H = 0, L = 1)�
Refer to DWG-1198765 for more information about
driver addresses.
Troubleshooting Table
This section lists potential problems with the system, indicates possible causes, and
suggests corrective action. This list does not include every possible problem, but it does
represent some of the more common situations that may occur.

Exchange Program
The Daktronics Exchange Program is a service for quickly replacing key components
in need of repair. If a component fails, Daktronics sends a replacement part to the
customer who, in turn, returns the failed component to Daktronics. This decreases
equipment downtime. Customers who follow the program guidelines explained below
will receive this service.
Before contacting Daktronics, identify these important numbers:

3� The defective or unused parts must be returned to Daktronics within 5 weeks of initial
order shipment�
If any part is not returned within ve (5) weeks, a non-refundable invoice will be
presented to the customer for the costs of replenishing the exchange parts inventory
with a new part. Daktronics reserves the right to refuse parts that have been
damaged due to acts of nature or causes other than normal wear and tear.
