Planning overview
This section provides an overview of the planning requirements for Dell EMC Disk
Library for mainframe (DLm) installation.
This section reviews Dell EMC responsibilities and outlines your responsibilities as a
DLm user for the following DLm systems:
lDLm8500 with Data Domain and ECS
lDLm8500 with PowerMax and ECS
Note: This document contains information about the VTEC cabinet of a
DLm8500. Refer to the respective site planning guides for PowerMax, Data
Domain, and ECS.

Note: Inform Dell EMC of any labor union-based restrictions or security clearance
requirements before delivery.
The DLm systems must be installed in a properly equipped computer room with
controlled temperature and humidity, proper airflow and ventilation, proper power and
grounding, system cable routing facilities, fire equipment, and so on. A raised floor is
recommended, although it is not required. One or more planning sessions with your
Systems Engineer and Customer Support Representative must close all the details
that are related to installation.
The following table lists the responsibility summary at the first planning session.

DLm system presite considerations
This section describes about the presite plan for DLm system installation.
When planning the installation site for your DLm system, meet with your Dell EMC
representative to complete the presite plan.
Physical specifications
The physical and environmental specifications section provides overall system
dimensions for the following DLm systems:
lDLm8500 with Data Domain and ECS
lDLm8500 with PowerMax and ECS
General considerations
This section describes about the general considerations that must take care before
DLm system installation.
Before installing the DLm system at your site, consider these factors:
lWeight capacities of the service elevator if delivery is to another floor.
lAvailability of an equipment ramp if the receiving floor is not on the same level as
the computer room floor.
Note: All portions of the cabinet should clear ramp and threshold slopes up to
1:10 (rise to run ratio), per Code of Federal Regulations – ADA Standards for
Accessible Design, 28 CFR Part 36.
lWeight capacities of the loading dock
lWeight capacities of the tailgate

Transportation and delivery guidelines
This section describes about transportation and delivery guidelines.
Mode of transport guidelines:
lFor all DLm systems delivered within the United States or Canada, Dell EMC
recommends an air-ride truck.
lAll DLm systems are wrapped in custom-designed shipping material. Also, the DLm
system may be crated and palletized.
lFor all DLm systems delivered internationally, Dell EMC recommends shipment by
air freight. Unless otherwise instructed, the Dell EMC Traffic Department arranges
for delivery directly to the computer room.
To ensure successful delivery of DLm systems, Dell EMC has formed partnerships with
specially selected moving companies. These companies have moving professionals
that are trained to properly handle large, sensitive systems. These companies provide

the appropriate personnel, floor layouts, and any ancillary moving equipment that is
required to facilitate delivery.
Pre-installation considerations
This section describes about the room environment which must be considered before
DLm installation.
Install the DLm in a properly equipped and well-ventilated computer room.
Environmental specifications
DLm requires the environmental specifications that are outlined in each chapter for
the specific DLm model. Ensure that the site meets or exceeds the specifications that
are listed for both raised and non-raised floor environments.
System host cabling requirements
This section describes about the requirements for system host cabling.
The Presite Survey, completed with the Dell EMC Systems Engineer, reports the Fibre
connection (FICON) cable length that is required for each host connection to the
DLm. From a physical planning perspective, review the routing paths from the hosts to
the DLm system. Resolve any physical access issues before the installation day.
Layout and space recommendations
Layout and space considerations are described in the chapter for the specific DLm
model.
CAUTION When moving the DLm cabinets down an incline, the rear of the cabinet
must go first and when moving up an incline, the rear of the cabinet must go last.
Remote support
This section describes about the remote support service.
Remote support is an important and part of the Dell EMC customer service and
support strategy. Communication between the Dell EMC Customer Support Center
and the DLm occurs either through IP connections to the local area network.
Secure Remote Support
DLm supports Secure Remote Support (SRS) Gateway that provides a secure, IP-
based, distributed remote service support solution giving you command, control, and
visibility of remote support access.
Contact Dell EMC Customer Support to configure SRS. This is an optional feature.
Establishing SSH trust
This section provides an overview of SSH trust establishment.
DLm features such as DLm health monitoring, DDRL, command processors,
configuration, and setup tools must run commands and operations on the backend
storage systems remotely. For this operation to work, SSH trust must be established
between DLm VTEs and the backend storage systems. SSH trust ensures that
applications on the DLm can run commands on the storage system without a

password. SSH trust is established when DLm is installed, or when new storage
systems or VTEs are added to the DLm.
Planning for upgrades
When planning for upgrades, consider space, power, and environmental concerns.

Network software ports needed to support DLm operations
This section describes about requirement of network software ports to support DLm
operations.
DLm software uses many protocols and standard network ports to support various
monitoring and configuration services. If your network configuration requires that
firewalls exist between DLm systems, ensure that the networking environment into
which you introduce DLm systems provides access to these networking ports and
protocols. Common uses for these network ports are for access:
lBetween the DLm and the SRS gateways
lTo user interfaces such as:

nData Domain system manager

Recovery Testing
This section describes about requirement of network software ports to support DLm
disaster recovery testing.
To perform DLm Disaster Recovery testing on a mainframe and to allow the mainframe
to write data to the back-end storage, you must configure your firewall to allow traffic
on particular network ports that are different for each back-end storage system type.
The following table lists the special port for Disaster Recovery testing for the various
DLm models:

DLm8500 with DD Physical Planning Overview
This section provides an overview of the physical equipment in a single-rack DLm8500
and a multi-rack DLm8500.
DLm8500 Single Rack Solution for Data Domain configuration
This section provides an overview of single rack solution for data domain
configuration.
A DLm8500 Single Rack Solution configuration is composed of one rack containing:
l1 or 2 VTEs
l1 GbE or 2 1 GbE switches
l1 GbE or 2 10 GbE switches
lOne Data Domain (DD) (DD6300, DD6800 single or HA, DD9300 single or HA,
9800 single or HA)
Note: Despite the differences in weight, the physical dimensions of all the cabinets
are the same.
