
Removing the AC Adapter Connector

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the battery (see Removing the Battery).

3. Remove the module cover (see Removing the Module Cover).

4. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).

5. Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest).

6. Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly).

7. Remove the processor fan (see Removing the Processor Fan).

8. Remove the middle cover (see Removing the Middle Cover).

9. Remove the screw that secures the left hinge-bracket to the computer base.

10. Turn the computer and remove the screw that secures the left hinge-bracket.

11. Lift the left hinge-bracket off the computer base.

12. Disconnect the AC adapter connector cable from the connector on the system board.

13. Note the routing of the AC adapter connector cable and lift the AC adapter connector off the computer base.
Replacing the AC Adapter Connector

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Route the AC adapter connector cable and place the AC adapter connector on the computer base.

3. Connect the AC adapter connector cable to the connector on the system board.

4. Place the left hinge-bracket over the AC adapter connector.

5. Replace the screw that secures the left hinge-bracket.

6. Replace the middle cover (see Replacing the Middle Cover).

7. Replace the processor fan (see Replacing the Processor Fan).

3. Slide the battery release latch to the side.

4. Lift the battery out of the battery bay.

Recommended Tools
Turning Off Your Computer
Before Working Inside Your Computer
This manual provides instructions for removing and installing components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that the
following conditions exist:
lYou have performed the steps in Turning Off Your Computer and Before Working Inside Your Computer.
lYou have read the safety information that shipped with your computer.
lA component can be replaced or—if purchased separately—installed by performing the removal procedure in the reverse order.
Recommended Tools
The procedures in this document may require the following tools:
lPhillips screwdriver
lSmall flat-blade screwdriver
lPlastic scribe
lBIOS executable update program available at support.dell.com
Turning Off Your Computer

1. Save and close all open files and exit all open programs.

2. Shut down the operating system:
Windows®Vista:
Click Start , click the arrow , and then click Shut Down.
Windows®7:
Click Start and then click Shut Down.

3. Ensure that the computer is turned off. If your computer did not automatically turn off when you shut down the operating system, press and hold the
power button until the computer turns off.
Before Working Inside Your Computer
Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your own personal safety.


1. Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.

CAUTION: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer.
WARNING: Before working inside your computer, read the safety information that shipped with your computer. For additional safety best
practices information, see the Regulatory Compliance Homepage at www.dell.com/regulatory_compliance.
CAUTION: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is
not covered by your warranty.
CAUTION: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal
mounting bracket. Hold a component by its edges, not by its pins.
CAUTION: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking
tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep
them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented
and aligned.
CAUTION: To avoid damaging the computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the computer.


2. Turn off your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer) and all attached devices.

3. Disconnect all telephone or network cables from the computer.

4. Press and eject any installed cards from the 7-in-1 Media Card Reader.

5. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

6. Disconnect all attached devices from your computer.

7. Remove the battery (see Removing the Battery).

8. Turn the computer top-side up, open the computer, and press the power button to ground the system board.

CAUTION: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device.

Flashing the BIOS

1. Turn on the computer.

2. Go to support.dell.com/support/downloads.

3. Click Select Model.

4. Locate the BIOS update file for your computer:
If you have your computer's Service Tag:
a. Click Enter a Service Tag.
b. Enter your computer's Service Tag in the Enter a service tag: field, click Go, and proceed to step 5.
If you do not have your computer's Service Tag:
a. Select the type of product in the Select Your Product Family list.
b. Select the product brand in the Select Your Product Line list.
c. Select the product model number in the Select Your Product Model list.
d. Click Confirm.

5. A list of results appear on the screen. Click BIOS.

6. Click Download Now to download the latest BIOS file.
The File Download window appears.

7. Click Save to save the file on your desktop. The file downloads to your desktop.

8. Click Close if the Download Complete window appears.
The file icon appears on your desktop and is titled the same as the downloaded BIOS update file.

9. Double-click the file icon on the desktop and follow the instructions on the screen.


If you ordered a card with Bluetooth wireless technology with your computer, it is already installed.
Removing the Bluetooth Card

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the battery (see Removing the Battery).

3. Remove the module cover (see Removing the Module Cover).

4. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).

5. Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest).

6. Remove the screw that secures the Bluetooth card to the system board.

7. Lift the Bluetooth card to disconnect it from the connector on the system board.
Replacing the Bluetooth Card

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Align the connector on the Bluetooth card with the connector on the system board, and press down to connect the Bluetooth card to the system board.

3. Replace the screw that secures the Bluetooth card to the system board.

4. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest).

Removing the Camera

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly).

3. Remove the display bezel (see Removing the Display Bezel).

4. Remove the two screws that secure the WLAN antenna to the display cover.

5. Disconnect the camera cable from the connector on the camera module.

6. Lift the WLAN antenna off the display panel.

7. Lift the camera module off the display cover.

Replacing the Camera

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Place the camera module on the display cover using the alignment posts.

3. Press down on the camera module to secure it to the display cover.

4. Place the WLAN antenna on the camera module and replace the two screws that secure the WLAN antenna to the display cover.

5. Connect the camera cable to the connector on the camera.

6. Replace the display bezel (see Replacing the Display Bezel).

7. Replace the display assembly (see Replacing the Display Assembly).

Removing the Coin-Cell Battery

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the battery (see Removing the Battery).

3. Remove the module cover (see Removing the Module Cover).

4. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).

5. Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest).

6. Lift the connector latches and pull the pull-tabs to disconnect the hard-drive cable and the status light board cable from their connectors on the system
board.

7. Disconnect the coin-cell battery cable from the connector on the system board.

8. The coin-cell battery is glued to the computer base. Using a plastic scribe gently pry the coin-cell battery out of the battery socket on the computer base.

Replacing the Coin-Cell Battery

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. With the adhesive side of the coin-cell battery facing down, press the coin-cell battery into the socket on the computer base.

3. Connect the coin-cell battery cable to the connector on the system board.

4. Slide the hard-drive cable and the status light board cable into their connectors on the system board. Press down on the connector latches to secure
the cables.

5. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest).

6. Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard).

7. Replace the module cover (see Replacing the Module Cover).

8. Replace the battery (see Replacing the Battery).



3. Loosen the captive screw that secures the module cover to the computer base.

4. Lift the module cover off the computer base.

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Slide the tabs on the module cover into the slots on the computer base and gently snap the module cover into place.

3. Tighten the captive screw that secures the module cover to the computer base.

4. Replace the battery (see Replacing the Battery).

Removing the Processor Heat Sink Assembly

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Follow the instructions from step 2 to step 18 in Removing the System Board.

3. Loosen the eight captive screws that secure the processor heat sink assembly to the system board in sequential order (indicated on the processor heat
sink).

4. Remove the processor heat sink assembly from the system board.
Replacing the Processor Heat Sink Assembly

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Align the eight captive screws on the processor heat sink assembly with the screw holes on the system board and tighten the screws in sequential
order (indicated on the processor heat sink).

3. Follow the instructions from step 4 to step 20 in Replacing the System Board.

NOTE: The original thermal pad can be reused if the original processor and heat sink are reinstalled together. If either the processor or heat sink is
replaced, use the thermal pad provided in the kit to ensure that thermal conductivity is achieved.

Removing the Hinge Caps

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the battery (see Removing the Battery).

3. Remove the module cover (see Removing the Module Cover).

4. Remove the memory module(s) (see Removing the Memory Module(s)).

5. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).


8. Using a plastic scribe, release the hinge caps from the display assembly.


7. Turn the computer over.

8. Disconnect the Mini-Card antenna cables from the computer base.

9. Turn the computer over and open the display as far as possible.

10. Remove the Bluetooth card (see Removing the Bluetooth Card).

