Where to get support
The Customer Support website provides access to product licensing, documentation, advisories, downloads, and how-to and
troubleshooting information. The information can enable you to resolve a product issue before you contact Customer Support.
To access a product-specific page:
1. Go to the Customer Support website.
2. In the search box, type a product name, and then from the list that appears, select the product.
Support library
The support library contains applicable solutions that you can search for either by solution number (for example, KB000xxxxxx)
or by keyword.
To search the support library:
1. Go to the Customer Support website.
2. On the Support tab, click Support Library.
3. In the search box, type either the solution number or keywords. Optionally, you can limit the search to specific products by
typing a product name in the search box, and then selecting the product from the list that appears.

1. Go to the Customer Support website.

PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance introduction
The Dell PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance model DM5500 is an integrated solution that offers industry-leading de-
duplication and data protection solutions. The PowerProtect DM5500 Appliance is a Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 one-node server
(2U) server with two drive bays. Each drive bay has 12 drives for a total of 24 drives. The DM5500 Appliance supports 12 x 32
GB DIMMs with 12 TB to 96 TB storage capacity.
Network switches are not included with the DM5500 hardware and must be purchased separately or provided by the customer.
Two switches are recommended for redundancy. The following switches are compatible with the DM5500.
●SFP28 switches that support 25 GbE and VLAN
●SFP+ switches that support 10 GbE and VLAN
●Switches that support 10GBASE-T copper cabling and VLAN
The DM5500 is shipped with a fixed rail kit and is installed in a customer-provided rack.
This guide describes DM5500 installation into the rack, cabling and network requirements, and the initial appliance configuration
in the PowerProtect DM5500 UI.
The DM5500 features, functionality, and configuration in the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI are described in the
PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance Administrator Guide for DM5500.

Solid blue Indicates that the system is turned on, system is healthy, and system ID mode is not
active. Press the system health and system ID button to switch to system ID mode.
Blinking blue Indicates that the system ID mode is active. Press the system health and system ID
button to switch to system health mode.
Solid amber Indicates that the system is in fail-safe mode.
Blinking amber Indicates that the system is experiencing a fault. Check the System Event Log for specific
error messages.

The iDRAC Direct LED indicator lights up to indicate that the port is connected and is being used as a part of the iDRAC
subsystem. You can configure iDRAC Direct by using a USB to micro USB (type AB) cable, which you can connect to your
laptop or tablet. The following table describes iDRAC Direct activity when the iDRAC Direct port is active:

Drive indicator codes
The LEDs on the drive carrier indicates the state of each drive. Each drive carrier in your system has two LEDs: an activity LED
(green) and a status LED (bicolor, green/amber). The activity LED flashes whenever the drive is accessed.

The DM5500 contains two drive bays, with each drive bay containing 12 slots for a total of 24 slots. There are two drive
configurations available for the DM5500:
●24 TB - DM5500 populated with 14 drives up to a maximum of 24 TB useable capacity
●96 TB - DM5500 populated with 24 drives up to a maximum of 96 TB useable capacity

The 24 TB useable storage capacity drive configuration includes two operating system boot disk drives, one SSD for cache tier,
two 12 TB disk drives for internal system storage, and eight 12 TB disk drives for customer storage capacity.

The 96 TB useable storage capacity drive configuration includes two operating system boot disk drives, two SSDs for cache tier,
two 12 TB disk drives for internal system storage, and 18 12 TB disk drives for customer storage capacity.

The pull-out information tag contains a white label with the

you log in to the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance
Configuration UI for the first time when you perform the
initial DM5500 configuration.

Hardware and software required for installation
Before installing the DM5500, review the following table to understand the hardware and software requirements for appliance
installation.

Static rail Included with the DM5500. Designed to work in any data center rack.
Rack Customer supplied. The DM5500 requires 2U.
The DM5500 requires front and rear access for servicing and should be placed in
the rack to accommodate these requirements.
See Install the DM5500 in the rack for more information.
Network switch Customer supplied. One or more. 10 GbE support required. 25 GbE support is
optional.
Switch must support VLAN for external (public) communication. Two network
switches are recommended for redundancy.
The DM5500 requires four ports on the switch (10/25 GbE, optical or copper). A 1
GbE NIC port connection to the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC)
port is strongly recommended. See Connect network cables and Connect iDRAC
cable for more information.
LC-to-LC multimode fiber (MMF) cables
or direct attach copper twinax network
cables
Supplied at no cost from Dell. The customer is given the choice of including
either LC-to-LC optical cables or direct attach (twinax) cables when ordering the
DM5500.
SFPs If LC-to-LC optical cables are used (instead of twinax cables), 4 x 10/25 GbE SFPs
can be ordered as a kit from Dell. Use the SFPs provided by Dell when connecting
the 4 GbE ports on the DM5500 to the customer network.
SFPs for switches Customer supplied if LC-to-LC optical cables are used.
LC-to-LC optical cables The LC-to-LC optical cables are an option and can be ordered from Dell or can be
customer supplied.
RJ45 iDRAC network cable CAT5e/CAT6 cable for connecting to iDRAC network connection. iDRAC
configuration and cabling provides an out-of-band method for remote management
and may be required for Dell support engineers to debug and troubleshoot.
RJ45 network cables CAT6a/CAT7 cables for connecting the DM5500 10GBASE-T ports to the customer
network. These cables are required if the customer chooses the DM5500
configuration with the quad 10GBASE-T port HBA in slots 3 and 4.
Service computer A service computer is required for initial login. See Assign static IP address to the
service computer for initial DM5500 login.
DNS In the customer data center.
NTP server address The DM5500 requires access to an NTP server for time synchronization.
IP addresses See Collect external network information.
Third-party rack requirements
The DM5500 must be installed in a customer-provided rack that meets the following requirements:

Rack The DM5500 fits in a standard rack with a minimum depth of 37 inches (940 mm).
Recommended 24 inches wide rack to provide room for cable routing on the sides of the rack.

Requirement category Description
If you install a front door, it must maintain a minimum of 1.2 inches of clearance to the bezels.
It must be perforated with 50% or more evenly distributed air opening. It should enable easy
access for service personnel and allow the LEDs to be visible through it.
If you install a rear door, it must be perforated with 50% or more evenly distributed air
opening.
Blanking panels should be used as required to prevent air circulation inside the rack.
There is a recommended minimum of 42 inches of clearance in the front and 36 inches of
clearance in the rear of the rack to allow for service area and proper airflow.
Power The customer-provided rack should have redundant power zones with separate PDU power
strips. Each redundant power zone should have capacity for the maximum power load. When
configured this way, the appliance will remain up and running even with the failure of one
power zone.
Use the power calculator to refine the power requirements based on the hardware
configuration and customer-provided PDU.
For customer-provided PDUs, the Dell power cords on the appliance have NEMA 5-15P
connections to the PDUs.
NOTE: Dell is not responsible for any failures, issues, or outages resulting from failure of
the customer-provided PDUs.
Weight Customer rack and data center floor must be capable of supporting the weight of DM5500

Rack rails
The DM5500 supports only static rails. There is no sliding rail option and there are no external cable management options such
as a cable management arm (CMA) or strain relief bar (SRB).

The static rails support tool-less mounting in EIA/ECA-310-E compliant square hole and unthreaded round hole 4-post racks.

The static rails offer a greater adjustability range and a smaller overall mounting footprint than the sliding rails. This feature is
due to their reduced complexity and lack of need for external cable management (CMA, SRB) support.

Installing the rails
Prerequisites
NOTE: The rails can be installed in both square and round hole racks.
NOTE: The support bracket must be removed if the rail cannot fit between the rack flanges.

To install the rails, perform the following steps.
Steps
1. Press the release latch on the rail.
2. Align the rail with the rack flange, ensuring that the rail pegs are seated in the designed rack holes.
3. Release the latch to lock the rail in place.
