Server Module Board Replacement 1-1
This document provides instructions for replacing the server module board on server
modules. After you replace the server module board, you must run the PERC 4/im DOS
utility the first time you turn on your server module to ensure that the SCSI hard drives
function properly.
NOTE: It is recommended that you run the utility on all server modules after
replacing the server module board regardless of the server modules current
configuration. The utility must be run on all server modules that have mirrored SCSI
hard drives. The utility should be run on all server modules that have two hard drives
because you cannot tell their state until after you run the utility. The utility should be
run on server modules that have one hard drive because you would not be able to add
another hard drive and configure a mirror at a later time unless you found and ran the
utility then.
To replace a server module board, perform the following steps:
1Remove the server module from the system. See "Removing a Server Module" in the
system Service Manual.
2Replace the server module board. See "Server Module Board" in the system Service
Manual.
NOTICE: Do not turn on the server module when performing step 3, or your server module
will not function properly. For proper performance, do not turn on the server module until
step 6.
3Install the server module in the system, but do not power on the server module. See
"Installing a Server Module" in the system Service Manual.
NOTICE: You must run the PERC 4/im DOS utility during the first server module boot after
replacing the server module board. You must run this utility only once. If you attempt to run the
PERC 4/im DOS utility after the server module has booted to the operating system or if you
attempt to run the utility more than once, the utility will not function properly.
NOTICE: If you have replaced the server module board in a server module that had mirrored
hard drives and that server module attempts to boot to the Microsoft®Windows®operating
system before the PERC 4/im DOS utility is run, your server module will be inoperable. To make
it operational, you must reconfigure the mirror and reinstall the operating system.
4With the USB diskette drive disconnected from the server module, insert the
PERC 4/im DOS Utility diskette into the USB diskette drive.
5Connect the USB diskette drive to the server module.
6Turn on the server module.
NOTE: A monitor must be connected to the video connector on the systems management
module.

7Ensure that the correct server module is displayed by performing the following steps:
aPress <Print Screen>.
bPress the up- and down-arrow keys to select the correct server module.
cPress <Enter>.
NOTICE: Do not wait too long before pressing <F2> in step 8, or your operating system will
load into memory. If the server module was configured as a mirror and running a Microsoft
operating system before you replaced the server module board, you will lose the paging file if you
boot to the operating system without first running the PERC 4/im DOS utility. To restore your
server module after losing the paging file, you must reconfigure the mirror and reinstall the
operating system.
8Press <F2> immediately after the following message is displayed:
<F2> = System Setup
9In System Setup, check the Boot Sequence option to ensure that the USB diskette
drive is first in the boot list and that it is enabled.
10 If you changed the Boot Sequence option, save the changes and exit System Setup.
Otherwise, just exit System Setup.
11 Boot the server module to the PERC 4/im DOS Utility diskette in the USB diskette
drive.
The PERC 4/im DOS utility starts automatically.
12 If the server module was configured with mirrored hard drives before the server
module board failed, but the mirror no longer exists, perform the following steps.
Otherwise, go to step 13.
aWhen prompted to reconfigure the mirror, press any key.
When the mirror has been reconfigured, the server module reboots.
bRemove the PERC 4/im DOS Utility diskette from the USB diskette drive.
NOTE: After the mirror is reconfigured and the server module reboots, a black screen
might be displayed during the boot process. If a black screen is displayed, turn off the
server module. After a second, turn the server module on again. The server module boots to
the operating system.
The server module is ready for use.

13 If the server module was configured with two unmirrored hard drives or with only one
hard drive or currently is configured with mirrored hard drives, perform the following
steps. Otherwise, go to step 14.
aRemove the PERC 4/im DOS Utility diskette from the USB diskette drive.
bReboot the server module.
The server module is ready for use.
14 If the server module was configured with mirrored hard drives that were in an
unsynchronized state when the server module board failed or you cannot determine
the state of the hard drives, perform the following steps.
NOTE: Conditions that might keep you from being able to determine the state of the hard
drives include, but are not limited to, double hard-drive failures in which one or both hard
drives recently failed, the hard drives do not contain hard drive signatures, or the hard
drives contain invalid signatures.
aRemove the PERC 4/im DOS Utility diskette from the USB diskette drive.
bReboot the server module.
cIf the server module does not boot to the operating system, switch the jumper
settings on the hard drives and reboot from the other hard drive.
dFrom the operating system, verify whether a mirror exists by performing the
appropriate procedure, found later in this document:
• Verifying the mirror on a server module running Windows 2000
• Verifying the mirror on a server module running Red Hat Linux

Running Windows 2000
1Open Disk Management.
2Check the two partitions in the Disk Management window to ensure that both
partitions exist and that they are the same size.
3Open two instances of Windows Explorer to look at both drives side by side.
4Compare the partitions on the drives to ensure that the file structures are identical.
If the drives only partially match, the primary hard drive has the most current data.
5To determine the SCSI ID of the hard drive, right-click Disk xon the left side of the
Disk Management window, and then click Properties.

Verifying the Mirror on a Server Module
Running Red Hat Linux 7.3
1Log in as root.
2Ty p e cat/proc/scsi/scsi.
• If the command returns the phrase Module: VIRTUAL DISK in the output,
you have a synchronized mirror. For example:

• If the command returns information about two hard drives, proceed to step 3. For

3To verify that the two hard drives were both mirrored, look at the partition structure
on both hard drives.
NOTICE: After the partitions are displayed, do not press <d >, which allows you to delete the
mirrors.
aTo access hard drive 0, type fdisk -l /dev/sda.
bTo access hard drive 1, type fdisk -1 /dev/sdb.
cCompare the output of both commands. If the partition numbers and sizes on
both /dev/sda and /dev/sdb are identical, the hard drives were part of a RAID 1
mirror.
4Ty p e df -h to display the partitions that are currently mounted by the operating
system.
• If all of the partitions are mounted from /dev/sda and no partitions are mounted
from /dev/sdb, /dev/sdb is the secondary drive in the mirror.
• If all of the partitions are mounted from /dev/sdb and no partitions are mounted
from /dev/sda, /dev/sda is the secondary drive in the mirror.

On a server module running Red Hat Linux, hard drives are seen in the order of their
SCSI ID. The drive with the lowest SCSI ID is /dev/sda, the next lowest ID is /dev/sdb,
and so on. For example, when examining the output of the cat /proc/scsi/scsi
command in step 2 for a server with two hard drives, the hard drive with ID 0 is
/dev/sda, while the hard drive with ID 1 is /dev/sdb.
