Introduction
The VxRail P670F, P670N, V670F, and S670 Installation and Service Manual provides an overview about the system, diagnostic
tools, and guidelines describing high-level operations.
The target audience for this document includes customers, field personnel, and partners who want to operate and maintain a
VxRail P670F, P670N, V670F, or S670. This document is designed for people familiar with:
●Dell systems and software
●VMware virtualization products
●Data center appliances and infrastructure

Dell Technologies Support
Create a Support account to access support resources for your VxRail. Link your Support account with VxRail Manager to
access resources without a separate login.
If you already have an account, register your VxRail to access the available resources. You can link your Online Support account
with VxRail Manager and access support resources without having to log in separately.
Register for a Dell Technologies Support account
Create a Support account to access support resources.
About this task
After you register, you can:
●Obtain product license files and software updates.
●Download VxRail product documentation.
●Access or download the SolVe Desktop application for hardware replacement and upgrade procedures.
●Browse the VxRail community and support information.
●Link your support account for access to resources from within VxRail Manager.
Steps
1. Go to Dell Technologies Support.
2. Click Sign In and select Create an account.
3. Enter your first name, last name, email address, and preferred password.
4. Select whether you would like to subscribe to email updates.
5. Click Create an Account.
Wait for a confirmation email within 48 hours.
Where to go for support resources
You can access support resources for your VxRail system by doing any of the following:
●In the VMware vSphere Client, select VxRail. Use the Support functions on the VxRail Dashboard.
●Go to https://www.dell.com/support.

Use SolVe Online for VxRail procedures
Step-by-step instructions for procedures such as replacing hardware or performing system administrative tasks are available
through SolVe Online.
You must have an online support account to use SolVe Online for VxRail. For more information about SolVe for VxRail, see KB
000022572.
To avoid potential data loss, generate VxRail procedures in SolVe Online before performing any hardware replacement or
upgrade activity.
CAUTION: Potential data loss may occur if you do not use SolVe Online to perform hardware replacements or
upgrades.
Locate your appliance serial number
To get support for your appliance, use the VxRail appliance serial number, also called the Product Serial Number Tag (PSNT).
The PSNT is a 14-digit number used to identify individual appliances on Dell Technologies support.
NOTE: Only use the VxRail appliance serial number to contact Customer Support. Sometimes, you may need to supply the
7-digit service tag number.
The two identification tags on your appliance are located as follows:
●The VxRail appliance serial number tag — You can find the serial number (PSNT) printed on the information tag on your
physical appliance, or you can locate the PSNT using VxRail Manager.
●The service tag — You can find the service tag printed on the physical appliance.
Look up your VxRail serial number in VxRail Manager
Follow these steps to look up your VxRail serial number in VxRail Manager.
Steps
1. On the main page of the vSphere Client click Hosts and Clusters in the left navigation bar.
2. Select your VxRail cluster.
3. Select the Monitor tab.
4. Select VxRail > Physical View from the inner left navigation bar.
5. Observe the VxRail serial number, listed under each appliance ID.
The serial number is also called the "PSNT".
Locate the serial number and service tag number on your appliance
You can identify your VxRail using the unique serial number, service tag number, or express service code located on the
information tag of your appliance. The information tag is located at the front of your appliance. See the System Overview for
the location.
The information tag contains the following:
●Product serial number tag (PSNT), which provides the 14-digit VxRail serial number
●Service tag
To view the PSNT and other labels, pull out the information tag in the front of the appliance. Alternatively, information may be
on a sticker on the chassis of the appliance.
The mini Enterprise Service Tag (EST) is found on the back of the appliance. This information is used by Dell to route support
calls to the appropriate personnel.

System overview
The VxRail P670F, P670N, and V670F are dual socket, 2U server that supports:
●Two 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors
●32 DDR4 DIMM slots
●Two fault tolerant redundant (FTR) mixed mode power supply units
The VxRail P670F supports up to 24 x 2.5-inch SAS/SATA front disk drives (with four universal slots to support optional NVMe
drives) and 4 x 2.5-inch SAS/SATA rear disk drives.
The VxRail P670N supports up to 24 x 2.5-inch all NVMe front disk drives.
The VxRail V670F supports up to 24 x 2.5-inch SAS/SATA front disk drives (with four universal slots to support optional NVMe
drives).
The VxRail S670 is a 2U server that supports:
●Up to two 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors
●32 DDR4 DIMM slots
●Two fault tolerant redundant (FTR) mixed mode power supply units
●Up to 12 x 3.5-inch SAS/SATA front disk drives with 4 x 2.5-inch SAS/SATA/NVMe rear disk drives.
NOTE: All instances of SAS, SATA drives, PCIe SSDs, and NVMe are referred to as drives in this document, unless specified
otherwise.

●Status LED: Enables you to identify any failed hardware components. There are
up to five status LEDs and an overall system health LED (Chassis health and
system ID) bar. For more information, see the Status LED indicators section.
●Quick Sync 2 (wireless): Indicates a Quick Sync enabled system. The Quick
Sync feature is optional. This feature allows management of the system by
using mobile devices called as OpenManage Mobile (OMM) feature. Using iDRAC
Quick Sync 2 with OpenManage Mobile (OMM) aggregates hardware or firmware
inventory and various system level diagnostic and error information that can be

2 Drive N/A Enables you to install drives that are supported on your system.

Initial setup and configuration
Install, deploy, and configure your VxRail.
To install and deploy VxRail, you have the following options:
●You can purchase deployment services from Dell Technologies. If you are using VxRail deployment services from Dell
Technologies, do not rack the VxRail or connect power. Contact your Dell Technologies account team or reseller to arrange
for deployment by Dell Technologies certified technicians.
●Select the VxRail self-deployment option (no installation services). Go to www.dell.com/installvxrail for deployment
instructions and guidance.
Self-deployment
You must have extensive network experience, understanding of VxRail infrastructure planning, and deployment knowledge to
perform a VxRail self-deployment. If you are uncertain you can complete the end-to-end deployment process, contact your sales
representative for Dell Technologies Services. If you are unable to complete the deployment, contact your sales representative
for Dell Technologies Services.
During the VxRail deployment, iDRAC creates a vxadmin or PTAdmin account. This account provides hardware information
to the VxRail Manager and is required for the VxRail Manager and the cluster to function properly. Ensure that you do not
modify or delete this account.
CAUTION: Do not modify or delete the iDRAC account created during deployment. If the account is modified or
deleted, VxRail Manager and the cluster may not function properly.

Pre-operating system management
applications
You can manage basic settings and features of the VxRail without booting to the operating system by using the system
firmware.
Dell Technologies optimizes your VxRail with the settings during installation and configuration.
CAUTION: Do not change any of the basic settings or features set by Dell Technologies to ensure best
performance.
Options to manage the pre-operating system
applications
VxRail contains options to manage the pre-operating system applications.
The following options are available:
●System Setup
●Boot Manager
●Dell Lifecycle Controller
●Preboot Execution Environment (PXE)
Dell Technologies optimized your VxRail during initial configuration.
NOTE: Do not change any of the basic settings or features set by Dell Technologies to ensure best performance.
iDRAC configuration
The Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) is designed to make appliance administrators more productive and
improve the overall availability of Dell appliances. iDRAC alerts administrators to appliance issues, helps them perform remote
appliance management, and reduces the need for physical access to the appliance.
Log in to iDRAC
You can log in to iDRAC as:
●iDRAC user
●Microsoft Active Directory user
●LDAP user
If you have opted for secure default access to iDRAC, the iDRAC secure default password is available on the back of the
appliance Information tag. If you have not opted for secure default access to iDRAC, then the default user name and password
are root and calvin. You can also log in by using Single Sign-On or Smart Card.
The following prerequisites are a must to log in to iDRAC:
●You must have iDRAC credentials.
●Ensure that you change the default user name and password after setting up the iDRAC IP address.
The iDRAC IP address is pre-configured for DHCP. This can be changed to a static IP address by logging into iDRAC.
●To access iDRAC, connect the network cable to the Ethernet connector 1 on the system board.
●Ensure that you change the default username and password after setting up the iDRAC IP address.

16 Pre-operating system management applications

Replacement of hardware components
You can replace hardware components on your VxRail such as hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), power
supplies, and so on.
See the table in the Supported hardware components section to know the components that you can replace. In addition to
these components, there are some hardware components that require you to contact the Dell Technologies support to arrange
for repair or replacement.
NOTE: Before you proceed with the replacement, go to SolVe and generate the replacement procedure of the component
that you want to replace. For more information about how to use SolVe, see Using SolVe Online for VxRail procedures.
Use SolVe Online for VxRail procedures
Step-by-step instructions for procedures such as replacing hardware or performing system administrative tasks are available
through SolVe Online.
You must have an online support account to use SolVe Online for VxRail. For more information about SolVe for VxRail, see KB
000022572.
To avoid potential data loss, generate VxRail procedures in SolVe Online before performing any hardware replacement or
upgrade activity.
CAUTION: Potential data loss may occur if you do not use SolVe Online to perform hardware replacements or
upgrades.

System memory guidelines
The VxRail P670F, P670N, V670F, and S670 supports DDR4 registered DIMMs (RDIMMs), Load Reduced DIMM (LRDIMMs),
and Intel Persistent Memory 200 series (BPS). System memory holds the instructions that are started by the processor.
Your system memory is organized into eight channels per processor (two memory sockets per channel),16 memory sockets per
processor and 32 memory sockets per system.

General memory module installation guidelines
To ensure optimal performance of your system, observe the following general guidelines when configuring your system memory.
If your system's memory configurations fail to observe these guidelines, your system might not boot, stop responding during
memory configuration, or operate with reduced memory.
The memory bus operates at a speed of 3200 MT/s depending on the following factors:
●System profile selected (for example, Performance Optimized, or Custom [can be run at high speed or lower])
●Maximum supported DIMM speed of the processors
●Maximum supported speed of the DIMMs
NOTE: MT/s indicates DIMM speed in MegaTransfers per second.
NOTE: Fault Resilient Memory-Non Uniform Memory Access is supported.
The system supports Flexible Memory Configuration, enabling the system to be configured and run in any valid chipset
architectural configuration. The following are the recommended guidelines for installing memory modules:
●All DIMMs must be DDR4.
●x4 and x8 DRAM based memory modules can be mixed.
●If memory modules with different speeds are installed, they operate at the speed of the slowest installed memory module(s).
●Populate memory module sockets only if a processor is installed. For dual-processor systems, sockets A1 to A16 and sockets
B1 to B16 are available.
●In Optimizer Mode, the DRAM controllers operate independently in the 64-bit mode and provide optimized memory
performance.
