Upgrading From LTO-1 or LTO-2 to LTO-3 3
This document provides procedures for updating your LTO-1 or LTO-2 tape drive modules to
LTO-3 tape drive modules in the Dell™ PowerVault™ 136T LTO tape library. You must perform
the following procedures to complete the update:
• Remove the LTO-1 or LTO-2 drive modules
• Install the LTO-3 drive modules
• Update the tape library firmware
Removing the Existing LTO-1 or LTO-2 Tape Drive Modules
NOTE: You must remove all LTO-1 tape drive modules in order to upgrade the PowerVault 136T tape
library to LTO-3. LTO-1 tape drive modules and LTO-3 tape drive modules cannot be present in the same
tape library. However, the PowerVault 136T tape library will support a mix of LTO-2 and LTO-3 tape drive
modules in the same library. This mixed drive support requires that the barcode labels on all tape media
have the correct media identifier (that is, L2 on LTO-2 media, L3 on LTO-3 media, and LT for LTO-3 WORM
media). In addition, backup software applications will need to be configured to work with this feature.
See the PowerVault 136T tape library documentation on support.dell.com and your backup software
documentation for more information.
CAUTION: Before performing this procedure, read and follow the safety instructions in your
Product Information Guide.
1 Shut down the tape library.
2 From the back of the library, remove the existing drive modules by loosening the two captive
thumbscrews on each sled. See Figure 1-1.
3 Slide the drive module out by its handle.
NOTE: If you are installing more LTO-3 drive modules than the number of drive modules that you just
removed, then beginning with the lowest-available filler plate, remove additional plates by loosening
the two captive thumbscrews.
Installing the New LTO-3 Tape Drive Modules
CAUTION: Before performing this procedure, read and follow the safety instructions in your
Product Information Guide.
1 Slide the new LTO-3 drive modules into place beginning with the lowest-available slot.
See Figure 1-1.
2 Tighten the two captive thumbscrews on each drive module.
NOTE: If you are installing fewer LTO-3 drive modules than the number of drive modules that you just
removed, then install a filler plate in each empty drive slot. Drives must be installed in order and there
cannot be an empty drive position between drive modules.
NOTE: See your user documentation or visit support.dell.com for recommended cabling configurations
and information for operating your PowerVault 136T tape library. When cabling LTO-3 drives,
Dell recommends connecting no more than two drives per host SCSI channel.

Updating the Tape Library Firmware
Use one of the following two methods to update the tape library firmware:
• Tape library serial port
• Remote management card
You must download the latest firmware package from the Dell Support website at
support.dell.com . After you extract the firmware package, the files will be located at
c:\dell\drivers\r xxxxx \library\ , where r xxxxx is the release number of the downloaded firmware
package.
Updating the Firmware Through the Serial Port
1 Ensure that the tape library is turned off.
2 Connect one end of a straight-through serial cable to the tape library serial port.
3 Connect the opposite end of the cable to a COM port on the system where you downloaded
the firmware files.
4 Open a command prompt in Microsoft
®
Windows
®
and navigate to the location of the library
firmware.
NOTE: The downloaded firmware file is located at c:\dell\drivers\rxxxxx\library\, where rxxxxx is
the release number of the downloaded firmware package.

5 Enter the following command:
Dell_LTO3_Update <Com Port#>
where: <Com Port#> represents the COM port to which the serial cable is connected.
6 The command will attempt to connect to the tape library. Turn the tape library on when
the following message is displayed in the command prompt window:
If processing does not continue after 20 seconds,
cycle power on the library.
Command will timeout if it does not connect to library.
When the update is complete, the window will display a status of the update and return to
the command prompt. If the "#" sign only is displayed in the download utility window, you
must power-cycle the tape library to complete the downloading process.
7 After the update is complete, reboot the tape library.
8 Ensure that the tape library operator panel does not display error messages. The tape library
firmware version can be verified in the
About menu on the library’s operator panel. The
version is also displayed in the
Library Firmware field on the main Web page of the remote
management card.
Updating the Firmware Using the Remote Management Card
1 Turn on the tape library and wait for it to completely initialize. The library will display
Online on the library LCD.
NOTE: The following message might display during the tape library’s initial setup:
" Your library versions do not match.
Download the latest version to the library.
"
Ignore this message.
2 Open a Web browser on the system that contains the new firmware files.
3 Enter the IP address of the remote management card that is installed in the tape library
that requires the firmware update.

4 If you are using Internet Explorer on a Windows Server™ 2003 system, the remote
management card must be a member of IE’s list of trusted sites. If the device has not been
added to the list or you are not certain that it is on the list, perform the following steps. If the
remote management card is already on the list of trusted sites or another operating system or
Web browser is being used, skip to step 5.
a In Internet Explorer, select Internet Options from the Tools menu.
b Select the Security tab.
c Select Trusted sites .
d Click the Sites button.
e Add the IP address of the PowerVault 136T remote management card to the list
of trusted sites.
f Click Done and then click OK to exit the Internet Options.
5 Click the Firmware tab on the main page.
6 Enter the administrator name and password for this tape library. The default user name is
admin and the default password is password .
7 In the Select target for update dialog box that is displayed, select Update Library Firmware .
8 Click Browse and locate the firmware file that you downloaded.
NOTE: The downloaded firmware file is located at c:\dell\drivers\rxxxxx\library\, where rxxxxx is
the release number of the downloaded firmware package.
9 Click Update Firmware . The firmware update starts. Do not power-cycle or reset the tape
library until the firmware update completes.
10 After the update is complete, reboot the tape library.
11 Ensure that the tape library operator panel does not display error messages. The tape library
firmware version can be verified in the
About menu on the library’s operator panel. The
version is also displayed in the
Library Firmware field on the main Web page of the remote
management card.
To update the remaining library components, see the instructions included in the firmware package
you downloaded previously.
After installing the drivers and updating the appropriate firmware, reboot the host server to ensure
proper device recognition. You may also need to reconfigure your backup software to recognize the
new LTO-3 drives. See your backup software documentation for device configuration instructions.
