Denon AVR-87 User manual

■Fully Discrete, Equal Response and Power of 75 W
for Each Channel
Front 90 W + 90 W (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.07% THD)
Center 90 W (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.07% THD)
Surround 90 W + 90 W (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.07% THD)
The AVR-87 uses a high-capacity power transformer in the
power circuit to support not only stable reproduction of 5.1-
channel Dolby Digital / dts sound sources but also high-quali-
ty pure audio recordings. The fully discrete configuration of
the power amp section delivers equal power to the Front Left
and Right, Center, and Surround (Rear) Left and Right
speakers to ensure that they all respond at identical levels.
During surround sound reproduction, the AVR-87 taps its
powerful reserves of 75 W for each of the 5 channels to sur-
round you with a refreshingly clean, realistic sound.
■DDSC-Digital (Dynamic Discrete Surround
Circuit-Digital)
Since surround signals are all processed in the digital
domain, the AVR-87 is equipped with a newly-developed,
sophisticated, high-performance DSP circuit for the Dolby
Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, dts decoders, and Surround Simulator.
The D/A converters feature high resolution designs for all the
Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Subwoofer channels. This
combination of DSP and D/A converters works to bring out the
tremendous potential of Dolby Digital and dts sound. In addi-
tion, high resolution A/D converters have been incorporated for
the Dolby Pro Logic decoder. The high sound quality of New
DDSC-Digital is due in part to the high-grade signal processing of
the 24-bit, 96-kHz Digital Interface Receiver (DIR).The AVR-87
not only allows digital signals input from DVD and other
advanced media to pass directly to the DIR, it also processes
them while preserving their integrity so that even the most deli-
cate nuances of the music, reflecting the emotions of the artists,
are passed unfettered to the digital signal processor (DSP).

NEW MODEL INFORMATION
The AVR-87 is an A/V surround receiver that lets you enjoy Dolby Digital and dts surround sound with maximum ease.To ensure
that all channels deliver an identical response—a vital requirement of both Dolby Digital and dts—the AVR-87 is equipped with
fully discrete, equal power amplifiers. Sound effects linked with the action in a movie will thus move in the listening space around
you and greatly heighten the sense of realism.
The remote controller that comes with the AVR-87 is equipped with an LCD that displays up to 10 characters of text. This lets
you easily make settings for System Call and Preset Memory following the prompts.

■Affordable, High-Performance Dolby Digital and DTS
The AVR-87 gives you high-performance Dolby Digital
and dts at a price you can afford. With a fully discrete con-
figuration for each of the unit’s five channels, the AVR-87’s
Dolby Digital and dts decoder recreates the sound space
of a video program in real-life 3D perspective, with an
exciting sense of motion that accompanies the images on
the screen.
■96 kHz, 24-bit Audio D/A Converters
■6-Channel External Input, for Future Multi-Channel Formats
■Separate Current Supplies for Circuits
The AVR-87 is equipped with a main transformer featuring
independent 5-winding outputs, and a dedicated transformer for
the microprocessor, to completely separate the power amplifier,
audio, digital, video, and display circuits. This construction
reduces noise interference among the circuits and ensures a
clean, transparent sound.
■Hefty PowerTransformer for Stable Supply of Power
A power transformer has been connected in the power section
where it is combined with a rectifier diode and a large block
capacitor to ensure a large, stable supply of electrical current.
Accordingly, the AVR-87 boasts high output power of 75 W for
each of the 5 channels.
■Stable Speaker Drive
In the AVR-87, the circuitry through which current flows to
drive the speakers has been incorporated onto a single board
between the rectifier circuit of the power source and the speaker
terminals. A new phase correction circuit has also been adopted,
eliminating the need for an output coil. Since this configuration
allows the power transistor to drive the speakers directly, there is
no loss of power to any of the channels. The sound that you hear
is thus extremely stable as well as powerful.
■Video Select Switch
■All-channel Level Control
■Binding Post Speaker Terminals for All Channels
■Acclaimed Customization Feature
As with all of DENON’s high-grade A/V amplifiers, the AVR-87
lets you adjust delay times and other parameters so that you can
customize the performance of the AVR-87 to suit your own home
theater and enhance operating ease. The adjustments are easy
to make via a dialog format on the fluorescent display.
■Personal Memory Plus, for Easy Operation
The AVR-87 includes the Personal Memory Plus function
that automatically remembers the surround mode you last
used for each program source, so that you do not need to
select the mode again for that program.
■Easy Operation with New Remote Controller
●Dot Matrix LCD (10 characters)
Since the LC display on the remote controller is a dot matrix
type, the characters are easier to read, and up to 10 characters
can be displayed at any one time.
●System Call
System Call function to execute up to 20 successive pre-
assigned commands at the single touch of a button.
●Preset Memory (Over 100 Built-in Codes)
Since the remote controller is preprogrammed with more than
100 remote control codes, you can use the AVR-87’s remote con-
troller to operate not only DENON equipment but components
made by other manufacturers as well. (Some components may
not be supported by Preset Memory.)
