Early signs of carbon
monoxide poisoning resemble the u, with head-
aches, dizziness or nausea. If you have these signs,
the replace may not be working properly. Get
fresh air at once! Have replace serviced. Some
people are more affected by carbon monoxide than
others. These include pregnant women, people with
heart or lung disease or anemia, those under the
inuence of alcohol and those at high altitudes.
Natural and pro-
pane/LP gases are odorless. An odor-making agent
is added to the gas. The odor helps you detect a gas
leak. However, the odor added to the gas can fade.
Gas may be present even though no odor exists.
Make certain you read and understand all warnings.
Keep this manual for reference. It is your guide to
safe and proper operation of this replace.

gas tter in the Commonwealth of Mas-
sachusetts.
Sellers of unvented propane or natural
gas-red supplemental room heaters shall
provide to each purchaser a copy of 527
CMR 30 upon sale of the unit.
Vent-free gas products are prohibited for
bedroom and bathroom installation in the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

1. Remove fireplace and hood from carton.
Log is wrapped and inside replace. Do not
remove at this time.
2. Remove all protective packaging applied to
replace for shipment.
3. Make sure replace includes one hardware
packet.
4. Check replace for any shipping damage. If
replace is damaged, promptly inform dealer
where you bought replace.
6. Do not add extra logs or ornaments such as
pine cones, vermiculite or rock wool. Using
these added items can cause sooting. Do not
add lava rock around base. Rock and debris
could fall into the control area of replace.
7. This replace is designed to be smokeless.
If logs ever appear to smoke, turn off re-
place and call a qualified service person.
Note: During initial operation, slight smoking
could occur due to log curing and replace
burning manufacturing residues.
8. To prevent the creation of soot, follow the instruc-
tions in Cleaning and Maintenance, page 24.
9. Before using furniture polish, wax, carpet
cleaner or similar products, turn replace off.
If heated, the vapors from these products may
create a white powder residue within burner
box or on adjacent walls or furniture.
10. This replace needs fresh air ventilation to run
properly. This replace has an Oxygen Deple-
tion Sensing (ODS) safety shutoff system. The
ODS shuts down the replace if not enough
fresh air is available. See Air for Combustion
and Ventilation, page 6. If replace keeps
shutting off, see Troubleshooting, page 25.
11. Keep all air openings in front and at bottom
of heater clear and free of debris. This will
insure enough air for proper combustion.
12. Do not run replace
• where ammable liquids or vapors are used
or stored.
• under dusty conditions.
13. Do not use this replace to cook food or burn
paper or other objects.
14. Never place any objects in the replace or
on logs.
15. Do not use replace if any part has been under
water. Immediately call a qualied service
technician to inspect the room replace and to
replace any part of the control system and any
gas control which has been under water.
16. Turn off replace and let cool before servicing.
Only a qualied service person should service
and repair replace.
17. Operating replace above elevations of 4,500
feet could cause pilot outage.
18. Do not operate replace if any log is broken.
Do not operate replace if a log is chipped
(dime-sized or larger).

PRODUCT FEATURES
This replace has a pilot with an Oxygen Deple-
tion Sensing (ODS) safety shutoff system. The
ODS/pilot is a required feature for vent-free room
replaces. The ODS/pilot shuts off the replace if
there is not enough fresh air.
ELECTRONIC IGNITOR
This heater has an electronic ignitor to light heater
fuel supply.

1. Remove two screws that hold replace screen
in place for shipping. These screws are lo-
cated near top of screen. Discard screws. Lift
replace screen up and pull out to remove
(see Figure 2, page 6). Set screen aside until
installation has been completed.
2. Remove all packaging from inside of unit.
3. Remove bubble wrap from logs and discard.
4. Check installation of brick liners. Brick lin-
ers are in four pieces: 2 sides, 1 back and 1
top.

Today’s homes are built more energy efcient
than ever. New materials, increased insulation and
new construction methods help reduce heat loss
in homes. Home owners weather strip and caulk
around windows and doors to keep the cold air out
and the warm air in. During heating months, home
owners want their homes as airtight as possible.
While it is good to make your home energy ef-
cient, your home needs to breathe. Fresh air must
enter your home. All fuel-burning appliances need
fresh air for proper combustion and ventilation.
Exhaust fans, replaces, clothes dryers and fuel
burning appliances draw air from the house to
operate. You must provide adequate fresh air for
these appliances. This will insure proper venting
of vented fuel-burning appliances.
The following are excerpts from National Fuel
Gas Code. ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, Section 5.3,
Air for Combustion and Ventilation.
All spaces in homes fall into one of the three fol-
lowing ventilation classications:
1. Unusually Tight Construction
2. Unconned Space
3. Conned Space
The information on pages 6 through 8 will help
you classify your space and provide adequate
ventilation.
The air that leaks around doors and windows may
provide enough fresh air for combustion and ven-
tilation. However, in buildings of unusually tight
construction, you must provide additional fresh air.

The National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA
54 denes a conned space as a space whose
volume is less than 50 ft3 per 1,000 Btu/hr (4.8
m3/kw) of the aggregate input rating of all appli-
ances installed in that space and an unconned
space as a space whose volume is not less than
50 ft3 per 1,000 Btu/hr (4.8 m3/kw) of the ag-
gregate input rating of all appliances installed in
that space. Rooms communicating directly with
the space in which the appliances are installed*,
through openings not furnished with doors, are
considered a part of the unconned space.
* Adjoining rooms are communicating only if
there are doorless passageways or ventilation grills
between them.

DETERMINING FRESH-AIR FLOW
Use this work sheet to determine if you have a
conned or unconned space.
Includes the room in which you will install
replace plus any adjoining rooms with doorless pas-
sageways or ventilation grills between the rooms.
1. Determine the volume of the space (length x
width x height).
Length x Width x Height =__________cu. ft.

Example: Space size 16 ft. (length) x 14 ft.
(width) x 8 ft. (ceiling height) = 1792 cu. ft.

If additional ventilation to adjoining room is
supplied with grills or openings, add the volume
of these rooms to the total volume of the space.
2. Multiply the space volume by 20 to determine
the maximum Btu/Hr the space can support.

The space in the example is a conned space because
the actual Btu/Hr used is more than the maximum
Btu/Hr the space can support. You must provide ad-
ditional fresh air. Your options are as follows:
A. Rework worksheet, adding the space of an adjoin-
ing room. If the extra space provides an unconned
space, remove door to adjoining room or add
ventilation grills between rooms. See Ventilation
Air From Inside Building.
B. Vent room directly to the outdoors. See Ventila-
tion Air From Outdoors.
C. Install a lower Btu/Hr replace, if lower Btu/Hr
size makes room unconned.
If the actual Btu/Hr used is less than the maximum Btu/Hr
the space can support, the space is an unconned space.
You will need no additional fresh air ventilation.

This fresh air would come from an adjoining un-
conned space. When ventilating to an adjoining
unconned space, you must provide two permanent
openings: one within 12" of the ceiling and one
within 12" of the oor on the wall connecting the
two spaces (see options 1 and 2, Figure 4). You
can also remove door into adjoining room (see
option 3, Figure 4). Follow the National Fuel Gas
Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, Section 5.3, Air for
Combustion and Ventilation for required size of
ventilation grills or ducts.

Provide extra fresh air by using ventilation grills or
ducts. You must provide two permanent openings:
one within 12" of the ceiling and one within 12"
of the oor. Connect these items directly to the
outdoors or spaces open to the outdoors. These
spaces include attics and crawl spaces. Follow the
National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54,
Section 5.3, Air for Combustion and Ventilation for
required size of ventilation grills or ducts.
IMPORTANT: Do not provide openings for inlet
or outlet air into attic if attic has a thermostat-
controlled power vent. Heated air entering the attic
will activate the power vent.

IMPORTANT: Vent-free replaces add moisture
to the air. Although this is benecial, installing re-
place in rooms without enough ventilation air may
cause mildew to form from too much moisture. See
Air for Combustion and Ventilation, page 6.
Note: Your replace is designed to be used in zero
clearance installations. Wall or framing material
can be placed directly against any exterior surface
on the rear, sides or top of your replace, except
where standoff spacers are integrally attached. If
standoff spacers are attached to your replace,
these spacers can be placed directly against wall
or framing materials.
Note: When installing replace directly on carpet-
ing, tile or other combustible material, other than
wood ooring, the replace shall be installed on a
metal or wood panel extending the full width and
depth of the replace.
Use the dimensions shown for rough openings to
create the easiest installation (see Built-In Fire-
place Installation, page 10).
Use the correct gas type (natural or propane/LP)
for your unit. If your gas supply is not correct, do
not install replace. Call dealer where you bought
replace for proper type replace.

* A CSA design-certied equipment shutoff valve
with 1/8" NPT tap is an acceptable alternative to
test gauge connection. Purchase the optional CSA
design-certied equipment shutoff valve from your
dealer. See Accessories, page 34.

If your replace is to be used with an optional
mantel, the installation instructions included with
your mantel shows an CSA approved method of
attaching the replace/mantel system to a wall.
IMPORTANT: Only use optional cabinet or
corner mantels specied in this manual. Purchase
the optional mantel from your dealer (see Acces-
sories, page 34).
If your replace is to be recessed into the wall,
see Built-In Fireplace Installation to secure your
replace into the wall.

Built-in installation of this replace involves install-
ing replace into a framed-in enclosure. This makes
the front of replace ush with wall. Fireplace face
will extend past sides and top of replace approxi-
mately 1". This will cover the rough edges of the
wall opening. If installing a built-in mantel above
the replace, you must follow the clearances shown
in Figure 9, page 12. To install the replace in this
manner, use the following instructions.

1. Frame in rough opening. Use dimensions shown
in Figure 7 for the rough opening. If installing in
a corner, use dimensions shown in Figure 8 for
the rough opening. The height is 22 1/4" which
is the same as the wall opening above.
2. Install gas piping to replace location. This
installation includes an approved exible gas
line (if allowed by local codes) after the equip-
ment shutoff valve. The exible gas line must
be the last item installed on the gas piping.
3. If you have not assembled rebox, follow
instructions on page 6.
4. Carefully set replace in front of rough opening
with back of replace inside wall opening.
5. Attach exible gas line to replace gas regula-
tor. See Connecting Fireplace to Gas Supply,
page 14.
6. Check all gas connections for leaks. See
Checking Gas Connections, page 15.
IMPORTANT: When finishing your firebox,
combustible materials such as wall board, gypsum
board, sheet rock, drywall, plywood, etc. may be
butted up next to the sides and top edge of the re-
box. Combustible materials should never overlap
the rebox front facing.

Refer to instructions provided with the mantel for
assembly. Refer to the following instructions for
system installation. Refer to instructions on page
6 for hood assembly.
1. Assemble cabinet mantel as shown in acces-
sory instruction sheet.
2. Place hearth base against wall at installation
location. Cut an access hole in hearth base to
run gas line to replace (see Figure 10). Make
sure to locate access hole so cabinet mantel will
cover it when installed. Note: You can secure
base to oor using wood screws. Countersink
screw heads and putty over.
3. Route exible gas line through access hole in
hearth base.
4. Center cabinet mantel on hearth base (see
Figure 11). Make sure mantel is ush against
wall and centered left to right on base.
5. Use hardware provided with mantel accessory
to attach mantel assembly to base (see mantel
instruction sheet).
6. Attach exible gas line to replace gas regula-
tor. See Connecting to Gas Supply, page 13.
7. Check all gas connections for leaks. See
Checking Gas Connections, page 15.
8. Carefully insert replace into cabinet mantel
(see Figure 12). Be careful not to scratch or
damage hearth base or cabinet mantel (see
manual instruction sheet.

WARNING: Never connect
IMPORTANT: For natural gas, check gas line
pressure before connecting replace to gas line.
Gas line pressure must be no greater than 14" of
water. If gas line pressure is higher, heater regula-
tor damage could occur.
-
For propane/LP units, the installer must supply
an external regulator. The external regulator will
reduce incoming gas pressure. You must reduce
incoming gas pressure to between 11" and 14" of
water. If you do not reduce incoming gas pressure,
replace regulator damage could occur. Install
external regulator with the vent pointing down
as shown in Figure 13. Pointing the vent down
protects it from freezing rain or sleet.

CAUTION: Use only new,

Installation must include an equipment shutoff
valve, union and plugged 1/8" NPT tap. Locate
NPT tap within reach for test gauge hook up. NPT
tap must be upstream from heater (see Figure 14,
page 14).
IMPORTANT: Install equipment shutoff valve
in an accessible location. The equipment shutoff
valve is for turning on or shutting off the gas to
the appliance.
Check your building codes for any special re-
quirements for locating equipment shutoff valve
to replaces.
Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male NPT
threads. This will prevent excess sealant from
going into pipe. Excess sealant in pipe could result
in clogged replace valves.

We recommend that you install a sediment trap in
supply line as shown in Figure 14. Locate sediment
trap where it is within reach for cleaning. Install
in piping system between fuel supply and heater.
Locate sediment trap where trapped matter is not
likely to freeze. A sediment trap traps moisture
and contaminants. This keeps them from going
into replace controls. If sediment trap is not
installed or is installed wrong, replace may not
run properly.

1. Disconnect appliance with its appliance main
gas valve (control valve) and equipment
shutoff valve from gas supply piping system.
Pressures in excess of 1/2 psig will damage
heater regulator.
2. Cap off open end of gas pipe where equipment
shutoff valve was connected.
3. Pressurize supply piping system by either
opening propane/LP supply tank valve for
propane/LP gas or opening main gas valve
located on or near gas meter for natural gas
or using compressed air.
4. Check all joints of gas supply piping system.
Apply noncorrosive leak detection uid to all
joints. Bubbles forming show a leak.
5. Correct all leaks at once.
6. Reconnect replace and equipment shutoff
valve to gas supply. Check reconnected t-
tings for leaks.

CONNECTIONS
1. Open equipment shutoff valve (see Figure 16,
page 15).
2. Open main gas valve located on or near gas
meter for natural gas or open propane/LP
supply tank valve.
3. Make sure control knob of replace is in the
OFF position.
4. Check all joints from equipment shutoff valve
to gas regulator (Manual-Controlled Models)
or to gas control valve (Remote-Ready Mod-
els) (see Figures 17 or 18, page 15). Apply
noncorrosive leak detection uid to all joints.
Bubbles forming show a leak.
5. Correct all leaks at once.
6. Light replace (see Operating Fireplace, page
18). Check all other internal joints for leaks.
7. Turn off replace (see To Turn Off Gas to Appli-
ance, page 20 for Manual-Controlled Models
or page 21 for Remote-Ready Models).
REMOTE CONTROL ACCESSORIES
Remote-Ready Models Only
1. Disconnect jumper wire from control valve
(see Figure 19).
2. Locate battery clip mounted on back of re-
ceiver (see Figure 20).
3. Slide 9-volt battery (not included) through
clip.
4. Attach terminal wires to battery (see Figure 20).
5. Connect wires from remote receiver to control
valve as shown in Figure 21.
6. Install remote receiver unit onto remote bracket
using screws provided (see Figure 21).

1. Disconnect jumper wire from control valve
(see Figure 23).
2. Connect one terminal of 25 ft. wire to “TPTH”
terminal on control valve (see Figure 23).
3. Connect remaining wire terminal to the “TH”
terminal on the control valve. Make sure that
wire terminals are in the positions on your unit
as pictured in Figure 23.
4. Route the 25 ft. wire to a convenient location
to mount your thermostat (no outside wall).
IMPORTANT: The wire may be shortened but
must not be lengthened.
The thermostat should be mounted 54" above
the oor in a location where there is good
air circulation. Avoid heat sources such as
lamps, direct sunlight, replace or heat and
air conditioning ducts.
5. Gently remove the cover of the thermostat
from the base. Grasp the sides of the cover
rmly and pull to separate from the base.
6. Feed the electrical wires through the rectangular
slots on each side of the base (see Figure 24).

8. Install the base onto the wall with the provided
screws.

9. Move the temperature adjustment back and forth
to insure the bimetal is free from restrictions.
10. Replace the cover onto the base. (Upon in-
stallation, the thermostat must be allowed to
stabilize at room temperature for a minimum
of 30 minutes for proper operation).
11. Set switch on replace to Auto position.
12. Set the temperature adjustment to the desired
setting. This thermostat has been electroni-
cally calibrated at the factory. No adjustment
or leveling is necessary.

5. Install the wall switch and cover in the wall.
INSTALLING LOG SET AND SCREEN
1. Remove log packaging material and discard
packaging. Gently place log over the burner (see
Figure 26). Do not allow log to contact ame. If
ame contacts log, soot will be created.
2. Reattach screen by placing the notches in the
screen frame over the shoulder screws and
pushing down.

to the oor because some gas is heavier than
air and will settle on the oor.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS
• Do not try to light any appliance.
• Do not touch any electric switch; do not
use any phone in your building.
• Immediately call your gas supplier from
a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas
supplier’s instructions.
• If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call
the re department.
C. Use only your hand to push in or turn the
gas control knob. Never use tools. If the
knob will not push in or turn by hand, don’t
try to repair it, call a qualied service tech-
nician or gas supplier. Force or attempted
repair may result in a re or explosion.

LIGHTING

STOP! Read the safety information, page 18.
2. Make sure equipment shutoff valve is
fully open.
3. Turn control knob clockwise to the
OFF position.
4. Wait ve (5) minutes to clear out any gas.
Then smell for gas, including near the oor.
If you smell gas, STOP! Follow “B” in the
safety information, page 18. If you don’t
smell gas, go to the next step.
5. Turn control knob counterclockwise
to the PILOT position. Press in control knob
for ve (5) seconds (see Figure 27).
Note: You may be running this replace for
the rst time after hooking up to gas sup-
ply. If so, the control knob may need to be
pressed in for 30 seconds or more. This will
allow air to bleed from the gas system.
• If control knob does not pop out when
released, contact a qualied service person
or gas supplier for repairs.
6. With control knob pressed in, press and
release ignitor button (see Figure 27). This
will light pilot. The pilot is attached to
the front burner. If needed, keep pressing
ignitor button until pilot lights.
Note: If pilot does not stay lit, refer to
Troubleshooting, page 31. Also, contact a
qualied service person or gas supplier for
repairs. Until repairs are made, light pilot
with match. To light pilot with match, see
Manual Lighting Procedure on page 20.
7. Keep control knob pressed in for 30 seconds
after lighting pilot. After 30 seconds, release
control knob.
Note: If pilot goes out, repeat steps 3
through 7. This replace has a safety inter-
lock system. Wait one (1) minute for system
to reset before lighting pilot again.
8. Turn control knob counterclockwise
to ON position. The burner should light.
