Hornet Encoder / Decoder
General Description
The Discover Video Hornet is a live video encoder and decoder that
provides live streaming and recording from a HDMI video input. It is
an appliance that is suited for IPTV, executive broadcasts, morning
announcements, enterprise and web streaming, and for video
“trunking” from encoder-to-decoder.
The appliance is compact and is used stand-alone on a desktop or
other surface, and may be placed on a rack mount shelf.
Chapter 1:
Introduction

Installation
Connect 10/100 Ethernet, HDMI audio/video source, and Power. Power
is supplied by an external AC power.
If using the decoder, connect a suitable monitor or similar video
destination.
Find IP Address
The Hornet is configured for DHCP and will obtain an IP address
automatically.
There are two ways to find the IP address:
Method 1 -- USB
Insert a USB storage device into the Hornet’s USB port. After a few
moments, a text file “streaming_ip_address.txt” will be created and it
will contain the IP address of the Hornet in this form:
IP address: 172.16.1.235 DHCP assigned IP address Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 172.16.1.1 Domain name servers(DNS): 172.16.1.1
Method 2 -- Finder
Run the Hornet Finder program. After several moments, all Hornet
devices IP addresses will be displayed.
The Hornet Ethernet MAC address is printed on the bottom label. You
may also use this to find the IP in your network.
Chapter 2:
Configuration

Hornet

Configuration
Enter the IP address in a browser. You will be presented with the
following Encoder Control Page:
Encoder Control
Encoder Control page will list all Hornet devices in your network along
with their current status. The Hornet that you logged in to is shown as
the current device.
The example above shows three Hornets, the first one is “this” Hornet
and shows the Device Name as the default Serial Number. It shows
that it is now has a 1080p video input, and that it is streaming.
Note that from “this” device, you can configure other device’s settings.
Configure Encoder Settings
In most cases, the encoder
settings are automatically set
by the Discover Video server
(see Output Settings), and
anything you set here will be
changed by the server. If not
using the server, then you can
make changes here.
Video Scaling allows you to
set the output stream
resolution to be the same
(“Passthrough”) or different
than the input video
resolution.

Limit to 30 fps –if your video input is 60 fps, limiting your
streaming to 30 fps will improve quality in most cases.
Latency Mode –only “Normal” is currently available.
Encoding Mode –Fixed or Variable. Variable allows the encoder to
“burst” data at a higher rate to maintain quality, but may not be
ideal for some networks. Fixed is the preferred mode.
Key Frame Interval –Determines how often a MPEG GOP I frame
and H264 “IDR” is produced. More key frames allow decoders to
start the video sooner, but reduces compression efficiency. Value
of 2 to 10 seconds is recommended depending on bit rate.
Video Encoding and Rate –Only H264 is available. The output bit
rate is set in Kbps (e.g. 1000 Kbps = 1 Mbps).
H.264 Profile –select Baseline, Main, or High profile. Generally,
lower bit rates should use Baseline, medium rates use Main, and
higher rates use High. High profile also puts more burden on the
decoding players.
Audio Encoding –Only Advanced Audio Codec Low Complexity
(AAC-LC) is available. The audio sampling rate is always 48 KHz.
The audio bit rate determines the quality of the audio. 128 Kbps is
a good choice for most uses.
Output Settings
The Output Settings is
where you configure
the Hornet to get
instructions from the
Discover Video DEVOS
or DVExpress system.
Copy the URL from
DEVOS to the RTMP
Output area as shown and select Apply then OK.
This setting will automatically set all other settings except for Decoder
settings.

RTMP –enter the DEVOS or DVExpress Hornet URL
Multicast –Only used if not configured with a Discover Video
server system. Select RTP or UDP output and enter Class D IP
address, port, and TTL.
Unicast -- Only used if not configured with a Discover Video server
system. Hornet can send UDP to up to two destinations.
File Recording -- Only used if not configured with a Discover Video
server system. You can set record file name. NOTE: Hornet
currently only records in .TS format. When uploaded to a Discover
Video server, the video is transcoded into industry-standard .mp4
(A future release of Hornet will support .mp4 recording directly).
FTP Upload -- Only used if not configured with a Discover Video
server system. Allow configuration of upload via FTP after
recording.

Decoder Control
The Decoder Control allows you to select and configure the decoder
for each Hornet.
You can select the desired output resolution from the dropdown list.
Configure –allows you to select the
stream to be decoded. Hornet can
select a stream from another hornet
if that source is configured for local
unicast or multicast streaming, but
generally you will select “Other
Encoder” and use RTMP to receive a
stream from the Discover Video
DEVOS or DVExpress server.

Device Setting
Device settings allow you to give the Hornet a unique name (as
displayed in the Hornet Finder). By default, the name is the Hornet’s
Serial Number.
You can enable / disable the
encoder or decoder.
You can set the IP address to
DHCP (default) or fixed/static
IP.
Device Map
The Device Map shows all Hornets in your network and can show
connections between
them. This is useful for
point-to-point
Encoder/Decoder video
“trunking” configurations.

Advanced Settings
Advanced Settings allows you to enable Authentication and configure
a password that must be entered to access the Hornet User Interface.
Reboot Device –causes the
Hornet to reboot
Reset To Stream Default –
returns all settings except IP
to factory default
Firmware Update –allows
you to select firmware file an
upload it to the device.
