Wobbler System version 1.1 3

1. Introduction
This document details the design of the Wobbler system. The wobbler system is de-
signed to deflect a proton beam of a 30 MeV cyclotron in circular and random motion.

2. Installation
2.1 Unpacking and inspection
1. After installation of both the signal generator and the amplifier into 19”-rack or
other, connect both mains cables.
2. Connect the output of the signal generator (3p XLR) to the input of the power
amplifier.
3. Connect the output of the power amplifier to the HiP input of the signal generator.
4. Connect te HiP output of the signal generator to the deflecting coils.
5. Set CH1 and CH2 attenuators to 0dB (fully clockwise)
6. Set circuit ground switch to ”GROUNDED”
7. Set HPF (high pass filter) to ”OFF”
8. Set MODE to ¡DUAL¿
2.2 Connections and controls
In the table below the input and output connectors on the front and back panel are sum-
marized:
Front panel:
Mon-Ux Output BNC HiZ Output signal X-axis
Mon-Uy Output BNC HiZ Output signal Y-axis
I-coil X Output BNC 1 kΩ Current monitor 2V/A
I-coil Y Output BNC 1 kΩ Current monitor 2V/A
Back panel:

2.3. Interlocks
2.3 Interlocks
Both input and output interlocks are available on the 9 pole D connector on the rear of the
signal generator. The wobble-system-okay-output is an optically isolated contact between
pin 1 & 6 of the D connector. (Vmax = 300V, Imax = 130mA) the higher potential should
be on pin1. The enable-wobbler-input available between pin 5 and pin 9. Both pins need to
be short-circuited to enable the generator. The power amplifier is equipped with a remote
standby connector. Close a potential free switch on the “power remote” input to enable
standby mode.
2.4 Power requirements
The current source operates on single phase AC mains power from 100 V to 220V with a
frequency between 50 and 60 Hz without any need for range selection. The primary fuses
are 1.6AT for 220V and 3.15AT for 120V

3. Operation
3.1 Circular mode
This mode can be selected using the switch on the front panel. Only the amplitude is user
adjustable. The frequency is set with dip-switches inside the enclosure. The deflection rd
can be calculated using this formula:
re= 1650 1−
f
100B0A
Ep
(3.1)
where:
re= radius of deflection in circular mode [mm]
f= frequency [Hz]
A= distance form magnet to target [m]
Ep= energy protons [MeV]
B0= magnetic field [T]
3.2 Calibration procedure
Calibration is done by DrX Works B.V.
3.3 Setting trip level interlocks
If the output current is lower than a pre-defined level it will trip the wobble-system-okay-
output. This trip level can be set in the following manner:
1. Adjust the current setting on the front panel (using a volt meter on the current
output (BNC) to the required trip level. Note: the reading is RMS.
2. Adjust the PX & PY potmeters inside (Fig.3.1) the signal generator until the match-
ing minimum-LED starts flashing.
3.4 Power on delay
Power on delay is set to 0- 0.75 - 1.05 and 1.49 seconds to reduce the inrush current while
switching on the wobbler rack.

5. Environmental
Operating temperature range 0 to 40◦C ambient, however temperature fluctuations should
be kept as small as possible to prevent drifting. The Wobbler Systemshould be operated in
a clean environment. On no account must the Wobbler Systembe exposed to water ingress.
Wobbler System version 1.1 10

6. Maintenance
No maintenance is required in normal operation and there are no user-serviceable parts
within the Wobbler System. Each product is factory tested and supplied with a set of test
results. If degradation in performance to below the specified levels occurs, or a failure is
suspected, then the complete unit should be returned to the manufacturer together with
details of the fault.
Wobbler System version 1.1 11

7. Safety
Hazardous voltages are present within this line-operated unit. Do not remove any panels.
The Wobbler System must be grounded. Line supply is filtered within the amplifier. A
replaceable fuse is fitted to the line input connector which should be changed only when
the AC power is disconnected from the connector.
