ensuresafeoperationofthiscentrifuge,anyoneusingitshouldbeawareofallsafe
practicesandtakeallprecautionsdescribedbelowandthroughoutthismanual.

UseSorvall®rotorsonly.Useofanother manufacturer's rotorcancause rotor failure
whichcouldresultinpersonal injuryand/orcentrifuge damage.
Whenusingradioactive,toxic,orpathogenicmaterials,beawareofallcharacteristicsof
thematerialsandthehazardsassociatedwiththemintheeventleakageorrotorfailure
occurs during centrifugation,in whichcase neitherthe centrifugenorthe rotorcan
protectyoufrom particles dispersedintheair.To protect
yourself,
we recommend
additional precautionsbe takento prevent exposureto these materials,e.g.,useof
controlledventilationorisolationareas.
Alwaysbe awareofthe possibilityofcontaminationwhenusing radioactive,toxic,or
pathogenic materials.Takeall necessary precautionsanduse appropriate
decontamination proceduresifexposure occurs.
Neveruseanymaterial capableofproducing flammable orexplosivevapors.
Neverexceedthemaximumrated speedoftheinstalled rotor;todosocancause rotor
failure.
Alwaysreduce(derate)rotor speed whenever:
•the rotor speed/temperature combination exceedsthe solubilityofthe gradient
materialandwould causeittoprecipitate;
• rotor compartmentload exceedsthe maximumallowable compartmentload
specified(checkthiswheneveraverage fluid densityisgreaterthan1.2g/ml).See
Chapter4, Operation.
Failuretoreducerotorspeedundertheseconditionscancauserotor failure.
CAUTION
Do notrunorprecoola rotoratthecriticalspeed,asthiswillhavea detrimentaleffect

General Description
TheSorvall® RC-28S Supraspeed®Centrifugedefinesa new classof centrifugethat
bringsan unparalleledlevelofperformancetocentrifugation. Createdfromthe latest
designtechnology,itincorporatesusability,dependability,andsafetywithanextremely
versatile speed rangetoseta new standardin value.Whenusedwitha Sorvall®
Supraspeed®rotor,theRC-28Scanreacha topspeedof28000rpmwitha maximum
gforceof100095.At100095x g youcanperform applicationsinthe RC-28Sthat
previouslyrequiredanultracentrifuge.InadditiontotheSupraspeed®rotors designed
forusewiththeRC-28S,theRC-28SacceptsallSorvall®superspeedrotors,increasing
itsusefulnessbymakingitcapableofa widerangeofapplications.
The centrifuge ismicrocomputercontrolledand designedtobeuserfriendly.Itcanbe
operated using basic parametersonlyoryoucan decidetouseits special features.
Becauseofthis versatilityandits user-friendliness,itcan easilybe operatedby
inexperienced persons learning centrifugation methodsorby experienced persons
experimentingwithnewmethods.
Thebrushlessdcdrivewhichofferstheoptimumincentrifuge driveperformanceisone
distinct featureoftheRC-28S. Other featuresofthe centrifuge are: automatic rotor
recognition; programmability;RCFand

control;slowstartandslowstop control
forsamplereorientation; overtemperature control;a control panellocktopreventrun
parametersfrom beingchanged;anda built-in calculatorthatcanbeusedtoperform

Drive System
The RC-28Sdrive systemuses state-of-the-art brushlessdc motor technologythat
offerstheoptimumincentrifugedrive performance.
A brushlessdc motorusesan electronic commutatorin placeofa mechanical
commutator,whicheliminatesbrushesandthemaintenanceproblemsassociatedwith
them,plusiteliminatesthespeedandcurrentlimitationsofa mechanical commutator.
Thehigh torqueofthedcmotor resultsin faster accelerationand braking,whilethe
highefficiency meanslesspowerconsumptionandlessheat.Lessheatinthe motor
meansthatthedriverunscoolerwhicheliminatestheneedforanyauxiliarymeansof
motorcooling,suchasFreon®orwater.
The motorusedis inherently non-cogging which ensuresthe smoothest acceleration
and deceleration possible.Coggingistypicalofinductionandbrushtypemotorsand
cancausesampledisturbance duringaccelerationand deceleration.
The RC-28Sdrive systemis controlledbydual microprocessorsallowing extremely
accuratespeed controlduringaccelerationand decelerationand eliminating overshoot
of setspeed.Theaccuracyofthespeed controlresultsinsmootherslowstartandslow
stop,
pluspositiveactionbrakingfromsetspeedto0 rpm.Themicroprocessorsoperate
independentofeachothertoconstantlymonitorvariouscentrifugefunctionsand,asan
addedsafetyfactor,theymaintainconstantinternalcommunicationwitheachotherto
testand evaluatethe performanceofthe other.Themany teststhatareperformed
routinely throughout operation determineifany preset limitationsareexceeded;any
failuredetectedwillcauseimmediateshutdownbytheprocessordetectingtheproblem.
In addition,thecentrifugewillshutdownifcommunicationfailsbetweentheprocessors
or intheunlikelyeventbothprocessorsfail.
SPIN-RIGHT® RotorManagement System
TheSorvall® RC-28SSPIN-RIGHT®Rotor Management System automatically insures
optimal controlofthe selected speedand temperature parametersand preventsthe
inadvertent settingofa speed beyondthe capabilityofa givenSorvall® rotor.The
Sorvall®rotor installedinthe chamberisrecognized throughan ultrasonic scanning
devicethatis activatedwhenthe chamberdooris closed.The rotor identityisthen
displayedintheSETdisplayofthecontrolpanel.
Theprimaryfunctionoftherotormanagementsystemistoprovideanaddedmarginof
safety duringoperation.Thissystemiseffectiveonlywhenitisoperatedas intended.
Anymisuseofthesystem,aswithanyother centrifuge systemorfeature,can resultin
unsafe operation
Refrigeration System
Therefrigeration systemconsistsof:astainlesssteelevaporatorthatactsastherotor
chamber,a 2-hp hermetically sealed compressor,anair-cooled condenser,andthe
suction-capillarytubeassembly.Ahotgasbypasscircuitallowsforquiet, non-cycling

compressoroperationaswellasimprovedtemperaturecontrolandfrost-free operation.
Therefrigeration systemisfactory chargedwithFreon®502.
Thedesiredrun temperatureisenteredonthecontrolpanelandismaintainedbythe
systemelectronicswhichcyclesthehotgascircuitasrequired.Ifdesired,a maximum
temperaturecanbeenteredonthecontrolpanel;ifa valueisnotenteredmanually,the
maximumtemperaturewilldefaultto+5°Cabovesettemperature.Anyfailure causing
thetemperaturetoexceedthemaximumsettingwillresultintheterminationoftherun
anda corresponding messagewillbe displayedonthe control panelto alertthe
operator.
Vacuum System
Thevacuumsystemincludesa directdrivevacuumpump,anair-inletsolenoid(bleed)
valve,misteliminator,theevaporatorchamber,andinterconnectingtubesand fittings.
Reducedrotorchamberpressureissensedbya Piraniconvectiongaugelocatedatthe
pump inletmanifoldand monitoredbythe machine control microprocessor.When
activated,thissystemprovidesa vacuumlevelbetween1and15millibars.
Thevacuum systemisautomatically activatedonlywhenthesetspeedishigherthan
thetopairspeedofoneoftheSorvall®Supraspeed®rotorsdesignedspecificallyforuse
withtheRC-28S.
In the eventofa vacuumlossorinsufficient vacuum,a messagewillappearinthe
control panelSETdisplaytonotifythe operator.Inan emergency,suchasa power
failure,whensamplerecoveryisdesirable,thechamberdoorcanbeopened manually
(seeChapter7 forprocedure).

Whenyou receiveyour centrifuge,carefully inspectitforany signsof shipping
damage.Ifyoufind damage, please reportit immediatelytothe transportation
companyandfilea damageclaim,thennotifyDuPont.
Checkthe partsreceivedwiththe centrifuge againstthe shipping list;ifany parts
aremissing,contactDuPont(seebackcover).
Location
Locatethe centrifugeona level floor. Topermitfreeair circulation,the locationmust
allowspaceforthesizeofthecentrifuge(figure2-1),plusanadditional15cm(6inch)
spaceontheleftsideofthe centrifuge.Freeair circulationisveryimportantforthe
centrifugetofunction properly.

Leveling
WARNING
Thefront stabilizersmustbeusedas explainedbelowtoliftthe castersoffthe
floor;thiswillhelp minimizecentrifuge movementinthe eventofa rotor
failure.
Whenthe centrifuge is situatedatits operating location,lowerand securethefront
lockingstabilizers.Lowerthetwolockingstabilizersbyhanduntiltheyarefinger tight
againstthefloor.Thenusethe9/16inch(14mm)wrenchsuppliedwiththecentrifuge
to rotateeach stabilizeran additional2 1/2 turns.Thiswillraisethefront casters
about3 mm(1/8inch)offthefloorandlevelthecentrifuge (basedonlevelfloor).

thevoltagebeforepluggingthecentrifugeintoanypowersource. DuPont
is notresponsibleforimproper installation.
The centrifugeis equippedwitha 3-wirepowercordwitha 3-prongcap, including
ground connection,tofit HubbellreceptacleNo.9330or equivalent.
To connectthecentrifugetoa voltageotherthanwhatisspecifiedonthenameplate,the
centrifugewillhavetoberewiredandthepowercordmayhavetobereplaced.Inthis
case,
contactDuPonttohavea ServiceRepresentativedotherewiring.
The ON/OFFmainpower switchisa 30A circuit breaker, thereforea separateline
disconnect switchisnotneededunlessrequiredbylocalcodes.
