1 Information about the installation and operating
manual
1.1 Purpose of this document
This installation and operating manual is a part of the reverse osmosis device BWT PERMAQ®
Pico and contains important notes and information for the whole service life of the device.
Reading and following the installation and operating manual
üThe installation and operating manual contains important information for using the device
safely and efficiently for its intended purpose.
üThe illustrations in these instructions are provided to aid basic understanding and may de-
viate from the actual design of the device. Claims cannot be made based on this.
üAll legal claims are stated in the general terms and conditions (GTC).
1. Keep the installation and operating manual at hand in the immediate vicinity of the device
at all times as a quick operating reference for personnel.
2. Retain the installation and operating manual for future use.
3. Follow the accident prevention regulations and general safety provisions of this installation
and operating manual to avoid dangers and operate the device in a reliable and econom-
ical way.

1.4 Target group of this document
This installation and operating manual is intended for different target groups. Unless specified
otherwise, the contents apply to all target groups. Where indicated, only the specified target
group is permitted to perform the tasks listed.
Define clear guidelines for staff responsibilities for operation, set-up, maintenance and repair
work.
Commissioning and maintenance must be performed only by authorised and qualified special-
ist personnel.
Only personnel trained by BWT are permitted to operate the device.
The following target groups are mentioned in this document:
•Operator: The operator is responsible for defining responsibilities and duties and for train-
ing personnel. The operator must make the operating instructions available to operating
personnel and ensure that these personnel have read and understood them. The operator
also ensures that the product is used only as intended and ensures compliance with the ap-
plicable regulations.
•Trained staff members/operating personnel: Trained personnel are personnel who have
been briefed and where necessary instructed on the tasks assigned to them and the poten-
tial dangers in the event of improper conduct, and have been trained with regard to the
safety devices, personal protective equipment and safety measures required.
•Specialist personnel: Specialist personnel are personnel who are able to assess the work
assigned to them and identify the potential dangers based on their specialist training,
knowledge and experiences and their knowledge of the applicable regulations. Multiple
years of activity in the field of work in question can also be used for the assessment of their
specialist training.

2 Safety
2.1 General safety information
Reading the safety information
This chapter contains important safety information.
1. As the operator, you must read and understand this safety information before putting the
device into operation. Failure to follow these instructions may lead to dangers and violate
existing legislation.
2. You must retain this safety information for future use.
DANGER
Danger due to electrical voltage
Contact with live wires may result in severe physical injury or death.
üWork on electrical installations must be performed only by qualified electrical specialists.
üThe statutory local safety provisions and the technical specifications must be complied
with.
1. Switch off the device power supply.
2. Secure the device against restarting.
3. Wait for five minutes until the device is fully discharged.
4. Check that no voltage is present.
CAUTION
Risk of injury due to corrosive substances
Contact with corrosive substances can cause permanent damage to the eyes, skin and respir-
atory system.
üOnly authorised and trained personnel is permitted to work with chemicals.
1. Before using chemicals, consult the relevant safety data sheets and take the necessary
safety measures.
2. Wear the recommended protective equipment.
3. Wash your hands thoroughly after working with chemicals.
4. In the case of contact with the eyes, rinse the eyes immediately with plenty of clear water
and consult a doctor.
WARNING
Personal injury and property damage due to improper operation
The improper operation of the device may result in personal injury and property damage.
üThe personnel used to perform installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance and
servicing work must have the appropriate qualification. The operator must clearly stipulate
areas of responsibility and the necessary monitoring.
1. As the operator, you designate the responsible person for the device and enable him or
her to reject any instructions from third parties that are contrary to safety.

2.2 Intended use
The reverse osmosis device BWT PERMAQ® Pico is used to desalinate water in drinking water
quality water up to max. 30°C and a max. raw water pressure of 6.0 bar. The pre-treatment of
the raw water must always be checked by the contractual partner of BWT.
The device is designed and built only for the intended purpose of use described here. Any
other use is considered “improper”.
The intended use also includes the adherence to the operating, maintenance and servicing
conditions stipulated by BWT.
NOTICE
Risk of irreversible damage
Any deviation from the intended use may lead to irreversible damage to the device.
1. Only supply the reverse osmosis device with cold water that fulfils the legal requirements
for drinking water quality and conforms to the technical data in Limiting values for the
feed water [}24].
2. Consult the BWT service team if the drinking water quality does not meet these require-
ments.
2.3 Impermissible operating methods
Modifications to and alterations of the device are not permitted for safety reasons. All parts
and accessories used are specially designed for this device. To protect the reverse osmosis
device, the following impermissible operating methods must be ruled out.
•Feed water is outside of the technical specifications (see the chapter Limiting values for
the feed water [}24])
•Overdosing of approved disinfectants or non-compliant cleaning chemicals (e.g. chlorine)
•High fluctuations in the feed water inlet pressure
•Operation without a grounded mains plug (PE)
•Heavy fluctuations in the electrical mains voltage
•Excessive device switching frequency due to incorrectly set (e.g. too closely positioned)
on/off switching points in the permeate tank
•Operation when the set WCF is too high
•Operation near direct heat sources or open flame (e.g. radiators, exposure to sunlight)
•Operation without a housing cover, when the control cabinet door is covered or the con-
trol cabinet is open
•Operation without tip-over protection (only for BWT PERMAQ® Pico 40-90 and Pico Vario
40–90)
•Operation with kinked hoses or with hoses with mechanical reducers.
The permeate must not be used as drinking water.

3 Devices and components
3.1 Description of process
Semi-permeable RO modules separate the raw water flow, which is supplied under pressure,
into low-salt purified water (permeate) and waste water (concentrate), which is enriched with
ions. The percentage ratio between the “permeate quantity produced” and the “amount of
raw water required” is expressed as the permeate yield (WCF). The higher the yield, the lower
the waste water. Typical yields for current reverse osmosis devices are approximately 80%.
Alongside the level of efficiency, permeate conductivity is another quality indicator for reverse
osmosis devices. The conductivity provides information about the rate of dissolved salts in the
permeate. This value is mainly determined by the salt retention rate of the RO module used
and the feed water quality.
The operation of the BWT PERMAQ® Pico devices is controlled by a programme and the
devices require raw water that has been softened or conditioned with antiscalant (AS) to
achieve the optimum yield and a longer service life for the RO modules. They can be used any-
where that purified water quality and a production output of 180–2800l/h is required.
Unlike conventional water throughput systems, BWT PERMAQ® Pico devices feature a full-fit
design with a minimal dead volume. This water throughput system more or less rules out any
contamination.

The BWT PERMAQ® Pico devices can be used in both online and offline mode. This means that
the permeate produced is either stored in a permeate tank and conveyed to the consumer
with a booster pump (offline) or conveyed to the consumer via a pressurized tank without a
booster pump (online).
3.2 Description of process for the BWT PERMAQ® Pico Vario
The online variant BWT PERMAQ® Pico Vario focuses on maximum hygiene and variable output
adjustment. The device can be controlled both digitally and through pressure points (for in-
formation about setting, see the chapter Setting pressure points (BWT PERMAQ® Pico Vario
only) [}34]). Thanks to the use of a frequency-controlled high-pressure pump, the permeate
flow can be modulated and the permeate pressure can be maintained at an almost constant
level even when consumption fluctuates. Consumers can be directly connected to the reverse
osmosis device without using a conventional membrane pressure vessel as a permeate buffer.

3.3 Device models
The following BWT PERMAQ® Pico device models are available:
BWT PERMAQ® Pico on/off
Reverse osmosis device for online/offline operation.
BWT PERMAQ® Pico HR
The HR version (high rejection) uses RO modules with increased salt retention and a reduced
permeate output.
BWT PERMAQ® Pico FT / BWT PERMAQ® Pico FT HR
The FT version is equipped with flowmeters for the feed water and permeate as well as a
needle valve for manual concentrate control. The FT version is also available as an HR version.
BWT PERMAQ® Pico Duo
The Duoversion, which consists of two reverse osmosis devices connected in series (BWT
PERMAQ® Pico online; BWT PERMAQ® Pico offline), can be used to achieve particularly high
permeate qualities.
BWT PERMAQ® Pico Vario / BWT PERMAQ® Pico Vario HR
The Vario version is an online reverse osmosis device that can be used to achieve variable pro-
duction quantities without an external pressure tank. The Vario version is also available as an
HR version.

4 Transport and installation
4.1 Transport
DANGER
The device may tip over during transport
If the device tips over, this may result in severe physical injury, death and/or damage to the
device.
1. During transport, fasten and secure the device as prescribed.
2. To transport and load the device, use only suitable and technically flawless hoists and load
bearing equipment with a sufficient load-bearing capacity (forklift, crane).
DANGER
Danger due to moving or falling loads
There is a risk of crushing when working with moving loads.
1. Do not stand below or in front of moving loads.
2. During assembly work above head height, use the designated safety climbing aids or work
platforms.
3. During lifting processes, use only suitable and technically flawless hoists and load bearing
equipment with a sufficient load-bearing capacity (forklift, crane).
4. Take a safety tolerance of at least 5% into account for the dimensions of openings for
transport in installation spaces.
Unpacking the device
1) Remove the packaging and transport locks.
2) Check that the delivery is complete and check for any transport damage.
3) Dispose of the packaging in an environmentally friendly way.
Mounting the anti-tip guard for device models 40–90
1) Mount the anti-tip guard supplied for the device models BWT PERMAQ® Pico 40-90 and
BWT PERMAQ® Pico Vario 40–90.
2) Move the anti-tip guard at ground level at the installation location and fasten it to the floor.

4.2 Transport notice
Note: For returning and transport reasons the RO device must be in an upright position. The
electrical components must be protected from moisture. In the case of an installed AS dosing
station, the to overlength components have to protect with padding. The devices packaging
are marked with self-explanatory pictograms.
4.3 Installation
Installation conditions
When installing the device, select a location where the unit can easily be connected to the
water supply network. In addition, note the following requirements.
•The installation site must be free of frost and must protect the device from chemicals,
paint, solvents and fumes.
•The ambient temperature must not exceed 35°C. Avoid direct heat sources, such as radiat-
ors.
•The installation floor must be even and must withstand the operating weight load (see the
chapter Technical data [}49]).
•The recommended distance from the device to the wall for maintenance and service work
is ≤ 0.6m.
•A duct connection (floor drain and separate mains connection, see chapter Technical data
[}49]) is required in the immediate vicinity.
•The required voltage and feed water pressure must be ensured at all times.
Pre-treatment
In general, a pre-filter should be installed upstream of any reverse osmosis device. If the feed
water is treated with oxidising disinfectants (chlorine, chlorine dioxide, etc.), an activated car-
bon filter must be fitted upstream from the unit. Any other pre-treatment must be determined
by the BWT service team based on the feed water quality.
Installing the device
üAll RO treatment devices (e.g. softener, pre-filter) must be fitted and put into operation in
accordance with their separate operating manual.
üOnly corrosion-resistant materials (e.g. plastic or stainless steel) must be used in the per-
meate area.
1) Install the device in such a way that it cannot rotate or fall.
2) Install a block valve in accordance with DIN EN 1717 upstream from the RO device. This pre-
vents the possible contamination of drinking water caused by backflow.
3) BWT recommends fitting a shut-off valve on the inlet side of the RO device to ensure that
the feed water supply can be stopped for servicing purposes.

4) At minimum, the design of the customer’s installation should be DN25 (Pico models 10–60)
or DN32 (Pico models 70–90). An undersized feed pipe results in a risk of an interruption to
operation due to insufficient water pressure or insufficient flow. NOTICE!Insufficient water
pressure may lead to pump cavitation.
4.4 Sample installations
BWT PERMAQ® Pico Offline
During offline operation, the produced permeate is stored in an atmospheric purified water
tank and pumped to the consumer using a booster pump. The sample installation below
shows a possible process chain consisting of a softener, RO device, permeate tank and pres-
sure booster with a softened water bypass environment.

There is no back pressure on the permeate side in the offline method, which generally results
in a higher permeate outflow compared to the online method.
BWT PERMAQ® Pico Offline with BWT AQUA Flex
Space-saving combination of a hygienic purified water tank with an integrated frequency-con-
trolled booster pump. This enables a modulating water output to the consumer at a constant
pressure. Additional tanks can be added to the BWT AQUA Flex system to increase the stor-
age volume.

BWT PERMAQ® Pico Online
In online operation, the purified water tank is not required for intermediate storage. The pres-
surized permeate is transported directly to the consumer here.
The online method is generally used for smaller installations, where the permeate quantity
produced roughly corresponds to the average permeate consumption. In this case, an expan-
sion vessel is used instead of a purified water tank and booster pump. This pressure reservoir
is used to buffer short peaks of demand. The generated backpressure distributes the perme-
ate directly to the consumer. To control the online variant, the space-saving BWT Multiblock
S4 is installed.

BWT PERMAQ® Pico Vario
The BWT PERMAQ® Pico Vario installation uses an online procedure with permeate recircula-
tion controlled by pump speed. The intelligent features of the Vario system mean that extra
components such as storage tanks, pressure boosters, and so on, are dispensed with, which
also keeps space requirements to a minimum. The BWT PERMAQ® Pico Vario is especially suit-
able for humidification applications. However, it is also becoming popular with end consumers
who need only small permeate quantities of 50l/h.

4.5 Hydraulic connection
The device must be connected to the water supply network by an authorised and qualified
sanitary plumber. The local statutory installation and accident prevention regulations, general
standards and guidelines and the hygiene requirements and technical data must be complied
with.
Hydraulic connection of the device (not BWT PERMAQ® Pico Vario)
To establish the hydraulic connection of the device, proceed as follows.
üThe installation of an upstream stop valve (not included in the delivery) is recommended.
1) Connect the softened water line to the feed water inlet.
2) Guide the permeate line to the outlet and flush thoroughly.
3) Connect the permeate line to the consumer (e.g. permeate tank).
4) Connect the concentrate line to the customer-supplied waste water connection with the
“free run-off” or to a salt water-resistant lifting unit. Prevent the hose from weaving.
A maximum connection height of 1.0m and minimum slope of approx. 1.0% applies for the
correct connection of the concentrate line. NOTICE!The line must not be kinked or have
any other constrictions in its cross section.
