DYN4073 Li-Po Low-Voltage Warning Module Installation and Operations Guide
NOTICE: All instructions, warranties, and other collateral documents are subject to change at the sole discretion of Horizon Hobby,
Inc. For up to date product literature, visit http://www.horizonhobby.com.
Meaning of Special Language:
The following terms are used throughout the product literature to indicate various levels of potential harm when operating this power
supply:
NOTICE: Procedures, which if not properly followed, create a possibility of physical property damage AND a little or no possibility of
injury.
CAUTION: Procedures, which if not properly followed, create the probability of physical property damage AND a possibility of serious
injury.
WARNING: Procedures, which if not properly followed, create the probability of property damage, collateral damage, and serious injury
OR create a high probability of superficial injury.
WARNING: Read the ENTIRE instruction manual to become familiar with the features of the product before operating. Failure to
operate the product correctly can result in damage to the product, personal property and cause serious injury.
This is a sophisticated hobby product and NOT a toy. It must be operated with caution and common sense and requires some basic
mechanical ability. Failure to operate this Product in a safe and responsible manner could result in injury or damage to the Product or
other property. This Product is not intended for use by children without direct adult supervision. This Product manual contains
instructions for safety, operation and maintenance. It is essential to read and follow all the instructions and warnings in this manual,
prior to assembly, setup or use, in order to operate correctly and avoid damage or injury.
The Li-Po Low-Voltage Warning Module monitors a Li-Po battery pack’s voltage and emits an audible tone when the voltage drops
below a safe level. This makes the unit very useful with electronic speed controls that do not have an internal Li-Po low-voltage cutoff
circuit and also for applications in which a Li-Po battery is used to power a nitro starter box.
CAUTION: This unit is not a cutoff device. It is only a warning device to alert you that the battery’s voltage has dropped below a
safe level.
NOTICE: Always disconnect the battery from the Low-Voltage Warning Module when you have finished operating your vehicle or using
your starter box. Features:
1. Suitable for use with 2–4S Li-Po or Li-Ion receiver packs.
2. Adjustable low-voltage warning circuit.
Installation:
For nitro starter boxes: The Low-Voltage Warning Module is best positioned inside the box at a location that is clear of any moving
parts such as starter wheels, drive belts or gear reduction units. Use double-sided tape in order to mount the module.
Power Lead Connection: It is easiest to connect the Low-Voltage Warning Module to your starter box’s switch harness. The Low-
Voltage Warning Module can also connect to the battery. If using two 2S packs in series, always connect the Low-Voltage Warning
Module to the end of the Y-harness at the starter box’s switch harness connection point.
For RC vehicles: The Low-Voltage Warning Module is best positioned near the ESC, as its main power leads (red and black wires)
connect easiest to the ESC’s battery power wire tabs (if ESC has solder tabs). The Low-Voltage Warning Module can also connect to
battery, battery connector or battery’s power wires. Based on where your Low-Voltage Warning Module will connect, select a position
where the unit can be mounted in the vehicle. Use double-sided tape in order to mount the module.
Power Lead Connection: Measure and cut the Low-Voltage Warning Module’s red and black power leads to the required length for
where it is to be mounted. Strip and tin the ends of the power leads and solder to your ESC’s RED (positive) and BLACK (negative)
solder tabs—RED power lead to RED (positive) tab; BLACK power lead to BLACK (negative) tab.
When soldering leads to the tabs, make sure you do not short any of the tabs to each other
or your electronics will be damaged!
When connecting the Low-Voltage Warning Module’s power leads to a battery, its connector, or battery wires, be sure to insulate solder
joints and exposed wiring to avoid short-circuits.
Setup Instructions:
When the module is powered the LED will flash “green” on for .1 second and off for .9 second. This is the safe operating mode that
verifies the battery pack is sufficiently charged.
To enter the setup mode press and hold the “set” button. The LED will turn off and after another 2 seconds will come back on. Release
the “set” button. You have now successfully entered the “setup mode”.
By pressing the “set” button you can now choose between 6 different “Low-Voltage” alert modes. Following is a description of each and
the LED color that designates them.
1. Solid red LED: Suitable for 2S packs with higher loading (5.5V).
2. Flashing red LED: Suitable for 2S packs with normal loading (6.0V).
3. Red/green LEDs flashing simultaneously: Suitable for 3S packs with higher loading (8.3V).
4. Red/green LEDs flashing alternately: Suitable for 3S packs with normal loading (9.0V).
5. Flashing green LED: Suitable for 4S packs with higher loading (11.0V).
6. Solid green LED: Suitable for 4S packs with normal loading (12.0V).
After 10 seconds without pressing the set button the regulator will leave setup mode and enter “Operation Mode” automatically saving
the last setup mode.
Operation Mode LED functions:
Flashing green LED: Normal safe operating mode that verifies the battery pack is sufficiently charged.
Flashing red LED/Audible alert buzzer: Battery pack has reached the “Low-voltage” setup value. Disconnect and recharge battery.
NOTICE: Always disconnect the battery from the Low Voltage Warning Module when you have finished operating your vehicle or using
your starter box. The Low Voltage Warning Module will continue to draw current from the battery even with the switch in the OFF
position. Over time the battery will completely discharge causing possible damage.
