this
end,
Type
72
adoptedtorsion
bar
springs.They
were
of

progressiveratetype
with
a
relatively
soft
initial
rate,
gradually
stiffening
as
roll
angle
increased.
In
an
effort
to
further
promotetireadhésion,
thé
brakediskswere
moved
inboard,
necessitating
half-shafts
to
connect
thé
disks
to
thé
wheel
hubs
at
thé
front.This
construction
was
very
similar
to
thé
one
seen
on
thé
gas
turbine-powered
4-wheel
drive
Type
56
raced
at
Indianapolis
and
thé
4-wheeldriveType
63F1
machine.
Like
in
Type
56,
Type
72hasa
wedge-shapeddesign
in
which upperbody
airflow
is
used
to
increasedownforce.
To
achieve
this
designshape,
thé
frontradiators
were
relocated
in
thé
middle,
on
eitherside
of
thé
tub.Thisbrought
thé
added
advantages
of
concentratingweightcloser
to
thé
center
of
thé
carfor
reducedmoment
of
inertia
and
shorterwaterpipes
for
reducedweight.
Introduced
at
thé
secondrace
of
thé
1970season
in
Spain,
Type
72
showedpoorhandiingcharacteristics.
The
teamthus
decided
to
hâve
team
ace
JochenRindtrace
in
thé
old
Type
49C
while
seconddriverJohnMiles
would
raceType
72.
Type
72B
was
promptly
developedwith
a
rearsuspensiondevoid
of
anti-squat
characteristics.
It
was
followed
by
Type
72C
which
further
deletedanti-divecharacteristics
from
thé
frontsuspension.
At
thé
wheel
of
Type72C,JochenRindtwent
ontowinin
Netherland,
France,England
and
Germany,making
it4
wins
ina
row.
Adding
thé
winin
Monte-Carlo
at
thé
wheel
of
Type49C,JochenRindtcollected
a
seasonbest
of5
wins
and45
points.
Type
72C
and
JochenRindt
also
took
3
pôle
positions,furtherproving
theïr
dominance.
Following
Rindt'
s
untimelydeath
inan
accident
during
practice
for
thé
Italtan
GP,
young
Emerson
Fittipaldi
went
ontowinhis
first
Grand
Prix
in

States
