1.0 OVERVIEW
EdgeTech’s magnetometer interface option allows users with a 4125 LT with Mag Option system to
simultaneously tow a magnetometer along with the Towfish. In doing so, users can gather side scan data
while simultaneously recording the Earth’s magnetic field strength throughout the survey.
NOTE: The 4125 E-Net side scan system is not compatible with the Mag
Option.
Currently, EdgeTech offers an interface package for Marine Magnetics SeaSPY II and Mini Explorer
magnetometers. No other brands or models can be interfaced with the 4125 LT now.
The magnetometer interface involves the following connection types to function:
•Mechanical
•Electrical
•Digital telemetry
The client needs to purchase the Universal Link (TAB) when placing the order for a combined Side Scan /
Magnetometer system, and to provide the brand and model number of the magnetometer they would
like their system to interface with, shown in FIGURE 1-1. If a client wants to interface a magnetometer to
an existing side scan system, an interface kit needs to be ordered from both EdgeTech and the
magnetometer supplier.
Figure 1-1: Marine Magnetics Tow Key

1-2
Customers who wish to add a magnetometer to their current 4125 LT systems also need to contact
EdgeTech to have their serial number checked in order to see if the system is eligible for the upgrade. The
customer may have to send in the 4125 LT Towfish to EdgeTech if they have an older model.
If the customer is eligible for the add on option, they need to order an interface kit P/N 0016344 from
EdgeTech as well as the magnetometer manufacturer. The EdgeTech kit consists of:
•4125 LT Magnetometer Option Fork coupler.
•Y-Cable splice to connect the existing tow cable to the side scan and magnetometer.
•All hardware needed to add coupler and interface with Universal Link (TAB)
1.1 Mechanical Interface
Typically, the magnetometer manufacturer will provide a 10m tow cable with a mechanical termination
to connect to the side scan tow arm. In turn, EdgeTech provides a custom tow point key for the
magnetometer. The tow key is attached to the side scan tow arm through a clevis pin, as shown in FIGURE
1-2.
If the side scan Towfish hits something, the tow arm shears from the housing, the magnetometer stays
attached to the key and tow cable, and the fish is retrieved from the tail by the Recovery cable.
The magnetometer connects to the breakaway arm using a clevis pin that allows swivel action but does
not allow the magnetometer to rotate. Since the Magnetometer is lighter than the side scan, it will tow
aft and above the side scan.

3.0 SETUP
The EdgeTech Side Scan Telemetry is used to transfer the magnetometer data to the Topside. The
Magnetometers have a bidirectional RS-232 interface at 9600 bps. The magnetometer data is read by the
Towfish electronics, encoded onto the side scan telemetry, and then decoded on the EdgeTech Portable
Topside Laptop or Rack Mount with Topside and is made available on a PC standard Com port. Control
messages from the PC hosting the magnetometer user interface software, are likewise transferred to the
magnetometer Towfish. A null modem serial cable is required to connect the EdgeTech topside to a laptop
or PC running the magnetometer acquisition software (Sealink, Maglog, etc.).
The EdgeTech telemetry allow for a full bi-directional communication link between the topside and the
magnetometer, where data flow upstream and commands flow downstream.
To properly relay the ‘Mag’ data from the Towfish onto the PC/laptop running the magnetometer
acquisition software, the SONAR program running in the Towfish and the DISCOVER Software on the
Topside need to be properly configured. The following shows the required fields in the initiation files. This
feature must be added to Towfish and is password protected. If the password was previously installed
follow the procedure below. If the password has not been installed contact EdgeTech for support. The
Towfish needs to be properly connected to the topside and powered up to perform this procedure.
1. Connect Towfish Cable Extension to the Y-Splice Towfish Extension Cable Connector
2. Connect Female Tow Cable Connector into the Male Y-Splice Tow Cable Connector
3. Connect Y-Splice Magnetometer Female Connector into the Male connector on the Mini-Explorer
or SeaSpy 2 Magnetometer Tow Cable:
