TheSonarProcessoristhecomputerthatcontrolstheM3SonarPHS.Itisavitalpartof
theM3SonarPHSPortableHydrographicSystem(PHS).
Inthispublication,thecomputerisreferredtoastheSonar
Processor.
TheSonarProcessorrunstheM3softwarethatmanages
communicationwiththeSonarHead,performsall
beamformingandimageprocessingandpresentsthesonar
imagery.TheSonarProcessorcommunicateswiththe
sonarthroughastandardEthernetcable.
M3SonarInterfaceUnit
TheM3SonarInterfaceUnitisatelemetryjunctionboxwhichalsoprovidespowerto
allthesensors.
TheSeapath130sensorunit,MotionReferenceUnit
(MRU),Soundspeedsensor,M3SonarHead,andSonar
ProcessorallconnecttotheM3SonarInterfaceUnit.The
connectionportsarealllocatedonthefrontpanel.
AnexternalpowersupplyconnectstotheM3Sonar
InterfaceUnit,providingpowertoallsystemunits.
Seapath130sensorunit
Thesensorunitrunsthenavigationsoftware.ThissoftwarecombinestheGNSSsignaland
theinertialmeasurementstodetermineaccurateposition,heading,attitudeandheavesignal.
ThissoftwareusesKongsbergSeatexASadvancedtruemulti-referencealgorithmsfor
real-timeparallelprocessingofallavailablecorrectionsignals.
Thesensorunitincludesthe

andantennas
•CablethatconnectstotheM3SonarInterfaceUnit

TheSonarHeadincludestransmitandreceivetransducersandtheelectronicstogeneratethe
transmitpulseanddigitizethereceivedsignal.
TwoSonarHeadmodelsareavailableforusewiththeM3Sonar
PHS:modelnumber922-20220000(EthernetwithSyncand1PPS),
andmodelnumber922-20240000(withanintegratedsoundspeed
sensor).IntheM3SonarPHS,theSonarHeadisattachedtothe
bottomofthePoleMount.TheSonarHeadconnectstotheM3
SonarInterfaceUnitthroughaheadcablewith100MbpsEthernet
and1PPStimesynchronization.

TheM3SonarHead’ sblackpolyurethanetransducerisdelicate.
AlwayskeeptheGuardRingandprotectivecoveroverthe
transducerduringinstallationandstorage.
MotionReferenceUnit
TheMotionReferenceUnit(MRU)isspeciallydesignedforhighprecisionmotion
measurementsinmarineapplications.
TheMRUismountedinalightweightsubseabottle,rated10metres.The
MRUcableconnectstotheM3SonarInterfaceUnittointegratewithSeapath
130GNSSsensor.
TheMotionReferenceUnitisverysensitivetoimpacts.Becarefulnotto
droptheMRU.Theelectronicsinsidewillbedamagedandneedtobereturned
tothemanufacturerforrepair.
Soundspeedsensor
Inordertoensureaccuratemeasurements,adedicatedsoundspeedsensorispositioned
closetotheSonarHead.
ThesoundspeedsensorcableconnectstotheM3SonarInterface
Unittooutputthereal-timesoundspeedtotheM3software.Ifthe
soundspeedsensorisintegratedintotheSonarHead,adedicatedcable
connectedtotheM3SonarInterfaceUnitisnotrequired.

Note
Itisimpossibletocontroltheweather .However,ifthevesselhashighdynamicsduring
start-up(forexample,asaresultofroughseas),theMotionReferenceUnit(MRU)mayrun
intoproblems.Highdynamicsduringstart-upmeansthattheMRUhasmovedupto±10
degreesonalltheorientationaxes.Atworst,thealignmentmustberedonebyrestarting
theMRU.

thefactorypriortodelivery.However,beforeexportingdatafromtheM3software,make
surethatallthesettingsintheM3softwarearecorrect.

TheM3softwarecontrolstheSonarHead,acquiressoundingdata,andexportsthesounding
datatothird-partysoftwareusingthe“.all”format.Third-partysoftwarereceivesthe
soundingdatafromtheM3softwarethroughUDPwiththeKongsbergMesotechM3driver.
