Welcome
Congratulations on your purchase of the EDIROL R-09 WAVE/MP3 Recorder. This
TurboStart contains step-by-step instructions that will quickly introduce you to the R-09’s
major features.
Recording
The R-09 offers high-quality recording capabilities in a compact package. Here’s how to
record in the R-09 using its built-in microphone:
Turn on the power.

Press the2 nbutton—the red nlight flashes, indicating Record-Standby mode.
Press the + or - INPUT level buttons located on the left side panel of the R-09 to

adjust the level so the meter in the display averages between 12 and 6.
Press
4 nto start recording.
Press
5 gwhen you’re finished.
Listening to a Recording
Here’s how to listen to a recording on the R-09:
Connect headphones to the headphones OPTICAL jack on the right side panel.1

to begin playback.
Press the + or - VOLUME buttons on the side panel to adjust the playback volume.

Tip: To move backward or forward through the recording, press and hold the I7or 8I
button, respectively.
When you’re finished, press4 g.
Selecting a File for Playback
There are two different ways to select a file for playback. Here’s how:
To select a file from the main screen:
Press1 I7or 8Ito select different files. As you press the buttons, the files are
selected and shown in the top of the display.
To select files while from the Finder screen:
Press and release the FINDER/MENU button.1

to choose the desired file.
Once you’ve selected the file, press
3 ntwice to load it—the file’s now ready for
playback.
Selecting the Recording Format
The R-09 has several different recording formats to choose from. For example, files
recorded at 48kHz/ WAV-24bit mode would have better sound quality than files recorded
at 44.1k/ MP3 192kpbs; however, they use up more memory. Here’s how to change the
record format to the one that best suits your needs.
Press and hold FINDER/MENU until “SELECT” is flashing in the upper right corner

of the display.

to select Recorder Setup.

4 I7or 8Ito choose the Sample Rate (44.1kHz or 48kHz).

5 gto select Rec Mode.
Press
6 I7or 8Ito change the recording mode.
Note: For more details and descriptions of the different modes, refer to Pages 26-28 in the
R-09 manual.
Press FINDER/MENU twice to return to the main screen.

Recording an External Audio Device (CD’s, cassettes, etc.)
Almost any external audio device can be recorded to the R-09. Here’s how:
Connect the output of the external audio device—CD player, Cassette player, mp31
player, etc.—to the LINE IN jack on the top panel of the R-09.
Adjust the volume on your external device and begin its playback.

Naming a File
To name an R-09 recording you’ve made:
Press and release FINDER/MENU—“Finder” appears at the top of the R-09 display.1

to choose the recording you’d like to rename.

to select Rename.

to choose a character location.

Repeat Steps 6-7 until the new name is entered.

Press9 nto store the recording’s new name.
Press FINDER/MENU to return to the main screen.

Deleting Files
Press and release FINDER/MENU—Finder appears on the R-09 display.1

to select the song you wish to delete.

to select Delete.

5 n—“Delete, Push [REC]” appears in the display.

6 nto delete the song.
Press FINDER/MENU to return to the main screen.

Exporting Files to a Computer
Here’s how to transfer R-09 files to a computer.
Turn on your computer and the R-09.1
Connect one end of the included R-09 USB cable to your computer’s USB port, and2
the other end to the R-09.
Note: The USB port on the R-09 is located under the bottom-panel lid. See the instructions
on Page 10 in the R-09 Owner’s Manual to learn how to access the port.
After making your connections, the R-09 appears as a device in the My Computer

window on the PC, or on the Mac OS X desktop.
Note: The computer can’t recognize the R-09 if the connection is made while the R-09’s
Menu screen is showing or during playback or recording of an R-09 file. Press FINDER/MENU
to return to the R-09’s Finder screen, or press gto halt playback.
For Windows:
Click Start in the taskbar, and then click “My Computer.”

Double-click “Removable Disk.”2
Select the desired R-09 files and drag them to the desktop or some other location.3
When you’re done, right click “Removable Disk” in the My Computer window, and4
then click “Eject.” This safely disconnects the R-09 from your computer.
For Mac OS X:
“No Name” or “Untitled” appears on your desktop once the R-09 is connected via1
USB.
Double-click the “No Name” or “Untitled” icon.

Select the desired R-09 files and drag them to the desktop or some other location.3
When you’re done, click and hold the “No Name” or “Untitled” icon and drag it into4
the trash. This safely disconnects the R-09 from the computer.
Formatting an SD card
A new SD memory card must be formatted before using it in the R-09.
Warning: Formatting the SD card completely erases all files and information on the card.
Make sure to back up any information you wish to preserve before formatting the card.
Confirm that the SD card is inserted completely into the R-09.
