ESC/POS®Command System
EPSON ESC/POS is a proprietary POS printer command system that includes patented or patent-
pending commands. ESC/POS is compatible with most EPSON POS printers and displays.
ESC/POS is designed to reduce the processing load on the host computer in POS environments. It

Warnings

Part Names and Functions
Power Switch
Turns the printer onor off. The marks onthe switch: ( : OFF/ : ON)
To turn the printer on immediately after turning the printer off, press the Power button after
the LED lights go off.
Before turning the printer off, it is recommended to send a power-off command to the
printer. If you use the power-off sequence, the latest maintenance counter values are
saved. (Maintenance counter values are usually saved every two minutes.)

Power Switch Cover
Install the power switch cover thatcomes with the TM-T82II onto the printer to prevent
inadvertent operationof the power switch and to prevent tampering. To resetthe printer when
the power switch cover is installed, inserta long, thin object(such as the end of a paper clip) into
the hole in the power switch cover and press the power switch.
A waterproof cover for the power switch is also included.
Control Panel
Power LED (green)
•Lights whenthe power supply is on.
•Goesout whenthe power supply is turned off.
Error LED (orange)
Lights or flashes whenthe printer is offline.
•Lights after the power is turned onor after a reset(offline). Automatically goes out after a
while to indicate thatthe printer is ready.
•Lights whenprinting has stopped (offline) due to paper end or paper near end. If this
happens, replace the roll paper.
WARNING
If an accident occurs with the power switch cover attached, unplug the AC cable
immediately.
Continued use of the printer may cause fire or shock.
Use the power switch waterproof cover if the printer is installed in a humid location or
exposed to water. If current leakage occurs, it could result in electric shock.
When installing the printer vertically or hanging the printer on a wall, be sure to attach the
included control panel label for vertical installation on the roll paper cover. The control panel
label for vertical installation is upside down.

Feed button
Pressing this buttononce feeds the roll paper by one line. Holding this buttondownfeeds the
roll paper continuously.
Offline
The printer automatically goes offline under the following conditions:
•During power onuntil the printer is ready
•During the self-test
•While roll paper is fed using the Feed button
•Whenthe printer stops printing due to a paper near end or paper end
•During a macro executionstandby state
•Whe
nanerror has occurred (See "Error Status" onpage 17.)
Whether to let printing stop when the roll paper is nearly out can be selected by a
command. For information about the paper near-end sensor, see "Adjusting the Paper
Near-End Sensor" on page 39.
Whether to let the Paper LED light when the roll paper is nearly out can be selected with
the memory switch. For information about the paper near-end sensor, see "Adjusting the
Paper Near-End Sensor" on page 39.
Enabling/disabling of Feed button can be selected by a command. If the command is set
to disable this button, it does not function. For information about ESC/POS commands,
see the ESC/POS Command Reference.
Whether to let printing stop when the roll paper is nearly out can be selected by a
command. For information about the paper near-end sensor, see "Adjusting the Paper
Near-End Sensor" on page 39.

Connectors
All cables are connected to the connector panel onthe lower rear of the printer.
• Drawer kick connector:
Connects the cash drawer or the optional external buzzer.
•Interface connector:
Connects the printer with the hostcomputer interface.
•USB(TypeB)connector:
This connector is for use whenconnecting with a hostvia USB interface.
The connector is covered with a plate whenshipped with some model. Whenusing this
connector with such model, setInterface Selectionin the printer's Memory Switch Setting
Mode to [Built-in USB]. See "Memory Switch Setting Mode" onpage 84.
•USB(TypeA)connector:
This connector is for use with the optional Wireless LAN cable set(OT-WL02). Do notconnect
other device. Whennotin use, leave the cover attached.
Countries where the OT-WL02 canbe used is limited. For detail, see manual for the OT-WL02.
•Powersupply connector:
Connects the power supply unit.
For a USB interface, do not turn on the printer before installing the printer driver.
Available interface may vary depending on the model.

Error Status
Whenanerror occurs, the printer stops operating, goes offline, and the Error LED flashes. There
are three possible error types: automatically recoverable errors, recoverable errors, and
unrecoverable errors.
Automatically Recoverable Errors
Printing is no longer possible whenautomatically recoverable errors occur. They canbe
recovered easily, as described below.
Recoverable Errors
Printing is no longer possible whenrecoverable errors occur. They canbe recovered easily by
turning the power onagain or sending anerror recovery command from the driver after
eliminating the cause of the error.

Unrecoverable Errors
Printing is no longer possible whenunrecoverable errors occur. The printer mustbe repaired.

Turn off the power immediately when an unrecoverable error occurs.

NV Memory (Non-Volatile Memory)
The printer's NV memory stores data evenafter the printer power is turned off. NV memory
contains the following memory areas for the user:
•NVgraphics memory
• User NV memory
•Memoryswitches
•R/E(ReceiptEnhancement)
•User-defined page
•Maintenance counter
NV Graphics Memory
Graphics, such as shop logos to be printed onreceipts, canbe registered. Evenwith a serial
interface model whose communicationspeed is low, high speed graphic printing is possible.
Use the TM-T82II Utility to register graphics. Youcanalso use the TM-T82II Utility or the NV
graphics informationprint mode to print and confirm the registered graphics.
User NV Memory
Youcanstore and read textdata for multiple purposes, such as for storing a note including
customizing or maintenance informationof the printer.
Use ESC/POS commands to store and read the textdata.
Memory Switches
With the memory switches, which are software switches for the printer, youcanconfigure
various settings of the printer. For informationabout the memory switch, see "Setting the
Memory Switches/ReceiptEnhancement" onpage 51.
As a guide, NV memory rewriting should be used 10 times or less a day when you program
applications.

R/E (Receipt Enhancement)
Graphics, such as shop logos canbe printed ontop or bottom of receipts by setting R/E (Receipt
Enhancement). For informationabout R/E, see "Setting the Memory Switches/Receipt
Enhancement" onpage 51.
User-defined Page
Youcanstore character data in the user-defined page (character code table: page 255) so thatyou
canalso print characters notresident in the printer.
Maintenance Counter
With this function, printer information, such as the number of lines printed, the number of
autocuts, and printer operationtime after the printer starts working, is automatically stored in
NV memory. Youcanread the informationwith the Status API of the APD or OPOS ADK to use
it for periodical checks or partreplacement.

User-defined page is not supported by South Asia font models.
You can also check the head running length and number of times of autocutting with the
self-test (see "Self-test Mode" on page 78.) and the TM-T82II Utility.
