IMITED WARRANTY
The Signal Division, Federal Signal Corporation (Federal), warrants each
new product to be free from defects in material and workmanship, under
normal use and service, for a period of two years on parts replacement and
one year on labor from the date of delivery to the first user purchaser.
During this warranty period, the obligation of Federal is limited to repairing
or replacing, as Federal may elect, any part or parts of such product which
after examination by Federal discloses to be defective in material and/or
workmanship.
Federal will provide warranty for any unit which is delivered, transported
prepaid, to the Federal factory or designated authorized warranty service
center for examination and such examination reveals a defect in material
and/or workmanship.
This warranty does not cover travel expenses, the cost of specialized
equipment for gaining access to the product, or labor charges for removal
and re installation of the product. Lamps, flash tubes, or batteries are not
covered under warranty.
This warranty does not extend to any unit which has been subjected to abuse,
misuse, improper installation or which has been inadequately maintained,
nor to units which have problems relating to service or modification at any
facility other than the Federal factory or authorized warranty service
centers.
THERE ARE NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED,
INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES
OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR
PURPOSE. IN NO EVENT SHALL FEDERAL BE LIABLE FOR ANY
LOSS OF PROFITS OR ANY INDIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL
DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF ANY SUCH DEFECT IN MATERIAL OR
WORKMANSHIP.

the SmartSystem-LMS (Model
SS2000C31) is operatio al right out

The SS2000C31 system is a ex-
tremely versatile system. Because
of this versatility, it is very impor-
ta t to k ow how you wa t the sys-
tem to fu ctio before you begi co -
figuratio . Therefore, be sure to read
the directio s before you begi co -
figuratio so that you may u der-
sta d the capabilities of the
SS2000C31 system.
To help i determi i g how your
system will fu ctio , a worksheet
outli i g all the capabilities of the
system is i cluded at the back of this
ma ual. Use this worksheet to de-
termi e exactly how your system
should fu ctio , the begi the
reco figuri g process. You will fi d
that filli g out the worksheet will
help greatly reduce the time eeded
to co figure your system to meet
your requireme ts.
O ce you have determi ed how your
system should operate, use this
ma ual to guide you through the
co figuratio process.
O page 3 is a overview of the dif-
fere t levels of co figuratio . Simi-
lar fu ctio s are grouped together.
Notice that level two is broke dow
i to specific fu ctio al areas sepa-
rated by arrows. These arrows rep-
rese t a cha ge i to a “deeper” layer
of level 2.
These deeper layers are o ly acces-
sible from the previous layer. There
is o ly o e way i to each layer a d
o ly o e way out.
Example: If you wa t to cha ge the
fu ctio ality of Slide Switch positio
3, you must follow the “flow” of the
arrows.
1. Select Level 2 from the MAIN
MENU .
2. Select “Slide Switches” to drop
i to the Slide switch layer.
3. Select Slide Switch positio 3 to
drop i to the “Slide Fu ctio s” layer.
4. Make your cha ges for Slide
Switch 3 i the Slide Fu ctio s
layer.
*We have just completed “o e way
i .” We must ow come out the same
way by use of the SAVE key.
5. Press SAVE. This will bri g you
back up to “Slide Switches.”
6. Press SAVE agai to bri g your-
self back up to Level 2.
7. Press SAVE agai to bri g your-
self back up to the MAIN MENU.
This is the extreme case as you will
otice ot all levels have sub-layers.
Be aware that if we also wa ted to
reco figure Slide Switch 2, we could
have selected Slide Switch 2 i step
6 above without goi g all the way
back to the MAIN MENU. This will
reduce the umber of key hits
eeded to co figure your system.
WARNING
Property damage, serious injury, or death to you or others may
result if the SS2000C31 is improperly configured. Configura-
tion, if required, is to be performed at the time of installation. It
is NOT intended for operators to “customize” the SS2000C31’s
operation for their individual preferences. It is the USER’s
responsibility to determine compatibility, suitability, and
ensure proper configuration of the SS2000C31.
The person responsible for configuration MUST be familiar
with local codes and procedures for safe emergency vehicle
siren and light operation.
Before proceeding, read and understand the Safety Message to
Operators on page 5.

WARNING
The lives of people depend on your safe
operation of ederal products. It is
important to read and follow all instruc-
tions shipped with the products. In
addition, listed below are some other
important safety instructions and pre-
cautions you should follow:
Qu lific tions
• To properly use a electro ic sire a d
speaker(s): you must have a good u dersta di g
of ge eral vehicle operatio , a high proficie cy

UNIFORM TRAFFIC CODES.
Sound H z rds
• Your heari g a d the heari g of others, i or
close to your emerge cy vehicle, could be dam-
aged by loud sou ds. This ca occur from short
exposures to very loud sou ds, or from lo ger
exposures to moderately loud sou ds. For
heari g co servatio guida ce, refer to federal,
state, or local recomme datio s.
OSHA Sta dard 1910.95 offers guida ce o
“Permissible Noise Exposure.”
• All effective sire s a d hor s produce loud
sou ds (120 dB) that may cause perma e t
heari g loss. Always mi imize your exposure to
sire sou d, roll up your wi dows a d wear
heari g protectio . Do ot sou d the sire
i doors or i e closed areas where you a d
others will be exposed to the sou d. O ly use
the sire for emerge cy respo se situatio s.
Sound Limit tions
• Before usi g the vehicle, check to see if the
sire speakers are co cealed from view. If the
sire speaker is ot i clear view o the fro t of
the vehicle, use extra cautio whe operati g
the vehicle. A co cealed sire speaker i stalla-
tio is less effective at war i g others.
• Maximum sou d output will be severely re-
duced if a y objects are i fro t of the speaker.
If your i stallatio has obstructio s i fro t
of the speaker, drive eve more cautiously.
• Freque tly i spect the speaker to e sure that
it is clear of a y obstructio , such as mud or
s ow, which will reduce maximum sou d
output.
Sign ling Limit tions
• Be aware that the use of your visual a d au-
dible sig ali g devices does ot give you the
right to force your way through traffic. Your
emerge cy lights, sire , a d actio s are
REQUESTING the right-of-way.
• Although your war i g system is operati g
properly, it may ot alert everyo e. People
may ot hear, see, or heed your war i g sig al.
You must recog ize this fact a d co ti ue
drivi g cautiously.
• Situatio s may occur which obstruct your
war i g sig al whe atural or ma -made
objects are betwee your vehicle a d others.
This ca also occur whe you raise your hood
or tru k lid. If these situatio s occur, be espe-
cially careful.
Driving Limit tions
• At the start of your shift, you should e sure
that the light/sou d system is securely attached
to the vehicle a d operati g properly.
• If the u ique combi atio of emerge cy vehicle
equipme t i stalled i your vehicle has
resulted i the sire co trols bei g i stalled
i a positio that does ot allow you to operate
them by touch o ly, OPERATE CONTROLS
ONLY WHILE YOUR VEHICLE IS STOPPED.
• If drivi g co ditio s require your full atte -
tio , you should avoid operati g the sire
co trols while the vehicle is i motio .

MAIN MENU
Entering
Configuration Mode
To e ter co figuratio mode, simply
execute the followi g steps:
1. Power up the system a d wait
for startup to fi ish.
2. U plug co trol head.
3. Press SAVE a d co ti ue to hold.
4. Plug co trol head back i while
co ti ui g to hold SAVE.
5. Release the SAVE key.
The “MAIN MENU” will come up o
the keyboard as soo as you e ter
co figuratio mode. Keys 10, 11, 12,
13, a d 14 butto s will be solidly il-
lumi ated.
At this poi t you have six choices:

• ENTER LEVEL 1
• ENTER LEVEL 2
• ENTER LEVEL 3

the slide switches be activated be-
fore the sire to e will be produced.

Default Configuration
If key 15 is o , the the keyboard is

o . Remember, this will erase all
previous co figuratio i formatio .
Configuration Mode
Disable
If key 16 is tur ed o , you will ot
be able to re-e ter co figuratio
mode o ce you exit this sessio . To
re-e ter co figuratio mode at a
later date, the “Push To Talk” but-
to o the micropho e for the sire
system must be o while the SAVE
key is pressed to e ter co figuratio
mode as referred to o page 6. The
Push to Talk butto must be held
u til you re-e ter level 1 a d tur
off key 16. O ce this is accomplished
you ca release the Push to Talk
butto o the micropho e a d pro-
ceed with reco figuratio as ormal.
